NCIS - Season 9 - Sean Astin to guest star

6 Feb 2012

EW has learned exclusively that Lord of the Rings star Sean Astin is set to appear alongside already announced guest star Jamie Lee Curtis in an upcoming episode of NCIS, scheduled to air in late March. Astin will, like Curtis, play a psychological operations investigator.

“I’ve been a big fan of Sean’s for years and this is a part we literally tailored for him,” says executive producer Gary Glasberg. “We couldn’t be happier to have Sean join us. Jamie’s character, Doctor Ryan, oversees a team of brilliant PsyOps agents and Sean will prove to be her go-to operative. We can’t wait to throw him into the mix, watch it develop, and have some fun.”

  3. I'm showing my age but when I first saw this I started humming, "Good enough, Goonies are enough.  Good enough for me."  It wasn't until I read the synopsis that I remembered LotR.  When are they going to give us that Goonies musical they've been bantering about for decades now?

As for the show, those are two great guest stars.  I've always been a fan of Jamie Lee Curtis and with the exception of Encino Man, the limited things I've watched with Sean Astin.  I might get my dad to watch this episode with me.

  5. Huge fan of Sean's, this is excellent news. Gotta admit, its not a role I would've thought of him for (PsyOp?), but I'm sure he'll be brilliant if they've tailored it to him!

  6. Meh.  Fine by me as long as he does a good job.  The casting really doesn't do anything for me though.

  7. Great guest !

Like everyone, I associate Astin with LoTR, but also with 24. His part as Lynn McGill on the fifth day was great, and in my opinion he made 24 history with his death (what, it's not a spoiler to say someone dies on 24, everyone dies on that show, even Jack, twice - well, technically it's just his heart that had stopped, or more exactly slowed down a lot the second time).

Lynn's death was such an emotional sequence, beautifully accompanied with Sean Callery's brilliant score — I hope Callery will get to compose such iconic musics on Homeland, his score on that great new show was good but I have to say I didn't really notice major flights of lyricism during the incredible 1st season. Throughout the season we see Lynn as an antagonist, but they manage to make us  root for him in his last moments. Some would say it's a tear-jerking theme, I like to think of it as a proof that 24 is one of the few shows that manages to make me cry : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wF9gPJrrn-0

What does it have to do with NCIS ? Nothing. Actually, I don't watch NCIS, so... alright, off I go.

  8. This sounds really good! I love the show and I can picture Jamie Lee Curtis very well in it, even if it's only for one episode. And now Sean Astin. Great news!
