Lost Girl - Kris Holden Reid on his issues with season 2 Dyson

“No, it hasn’t been a fun season to be Dyson,” Holden-Ried admitted. “I’m looking forward to season three.

“I’ll be glad to be done with this. Not to be able to feel love sucks.”

“The thing about season two is, it was supposed to be 13 episodes, and then it got extended to 22,” said Holden-Ried, explaining his good news/bad news predicament.

“(The producers) couldn’t figure out a way to (wrap up Dyson’s no-love story arc in the middle of the season) without it being climactic. So something that was supposed to be sort of short-lived became an entire season-long arc of basically Dyson being a self-tortured, miserable jerk.

“They did definitely take a lot of bullets from my gun (as an actor). How do you play the absence of something? How do you play not being able to feel something?”

With Dyson being a main character in Lost Girl, viewers still had to be engaged and interested in his manoeuvres.

“We didn’t want Dyson to become an apathetic character, because an apathetic character is very uninteresting,” Holden-Ried said. “So we made it that he can feel everything else except for love, and he also can feel the absence of love. So Dyson reacts to that with anger, frustration, self-destructive behaviour.

“There were thoughts about making the role even darker, but then everyone got kind of scared about, ‘Well, what kind of show are we doing? Can we afford to have a character who’s that dark?’ So we kind of got caught in the middle with Dyson, with sort of an adolescent version of someone going through a real heartache. Because we still have to find those moments of levity, and how do we do that?

“I don’t know if it’s going to pay off in the end, to be honest. I’m thankful that as of now, people still are watching me and going, ‘Oh, poor Dyson.’ I get a little nastier (in the next couple of episodes), so I might burn some bridges with some audience members.”Via jam.canoe

  1. I wasn't quite happy with what they were doing/not doing with Dyson this season (regardless of Dyson/Bo, just Dyson as a character) and I'm not sure I'm happy with him being nastier. I'm assuming it will work out in the end, but I'm kinda glad Kris is as frustrated as fans are. Here's hoping the damage can be reversed in S3.

  2. Whiny, much? Can't say I disagree with him, though. Dyson needs a storyline outside Bo's orbit. In fact, he is much more likable when he is not being a possessive/borderline abusive boyfriend. He's lost his ability to love (worst. storyline. in the history. of television), not his personality.

  4. I can accept it feelign so dragged out due to the extended season, but I still say the writers mishandled it entirely anyway. Removing love , even all of his love, does not remove his other emotions, revenge, excitement,  etc....

They flatlined him this season and there was no need to do that.

  5. Gossip Girl is getting renewed because they have one season left on the cast's contracts and they wanted one last season to wrap it up. So you all can stop shitting bricks now.

  6. Still on the "poor Dyson" bandwagon, but they totally need to fix it.  I think the writers lost their overall plan with the additional episodes, and these first few back are half filler and half crazy. Several of the characters have been acting really erratic. I'm waiting for them to explain it, so I can go "oh way to pull that one out," but I'm starting to loose faith. I miss nice, protective Dyson. Bo needs someone who has her back and is better in a fight than Kenzi.

  7. Wow.  That was an extremely frank, straightforward answer to an issue that an actor doesn't usually give a frank, straightforward answer to in the media.

  8. I'm waiting to see where his role goes. He could be influenced by the Garuda, have been accidently enthralled or maybe Bo just has that effect on ppl? Either way it's interesting to see the tension build between the fae characters.

First, I think that the Dyson and Bo relationship was cut kind of short.  They should have had Dyson try to go along with being with Bo.  Kind of like "I know I can't feel love but I remember what it was like with Bo" not just totally write it off (break up) and then try to move on.

Secondly, why didn't they coordinate who was going to help Bo.  As a fan that kind of pissed me off.  Both Dyson and Trick slit their wrist when only one of them needed to bleed.

Thirdly, I think Dyson should have had a plan before dealing with the Norn.  No one goes into a car dealership and expresses excessive amounts of joy and happiness to one car.  If they do they'll be paying full price and no bargains could ever be struck.

Fourthly, "what the hell Bo?"  I get the whole unaligned thing but have some standards.  Don't date a guy who believes in almost the exact opposite of what you do and then stay because of his "magic figures."  Aren't you suppose to be pro human?

Fifth and finale, I can't wait to see a better and more emotionally stable Dyson.  He is and no matter what will always be my favorite character.  Plus everyone knows werewolves rule.  From what I hear he will be getting his love back.  This leads to the question will his heart still belong to Bo or will he be able to give it to someone else.  If it's still Bo's than can expect a Dyson vs Ryan (light against Dark) showdown for Bo's heart.

  10.  I doubt Ryan will still be around in season 3 Lauren is and will always be Dyson's main competition for Bo's heart

  11. Just a note on the third point, I think Dyson's plan was to give the Norn his wolf (that's what he told Bo he offered the Norn and what the Norn first asked of him), but she did what ancients will do and tricked him via loose interpretation of his words.

Also, Trick wasn't originally going to use his blood, Kenzi called him out on it later.

But other than that, I totally agree with the Ryan thing.  I'm kind of hoping he'll betray Bo or something so she can give him a good swift kick in the butt.

To clarify my first point. The Norn did not use loose interpretation. She clearly said she will take what Dyson desires most.  He may have thought it was his wolf but he was ready to give that up for Bo.  Which meant he desires her more and therefore lost his ability to love to the Norn (wolves mate for life).  He should of had a plan like loose his wolf to weaken his enemy which he could have said was Bo's mom.
Now to clarify my second point.  If both Dyson and Trick were thinking of ways to help Bo in her battle against her mom, they could have done it together.  Instead they worked separately and instead of there being one consequence there was two with ripple effects.

  13. The last time he visited the Norn she asked for his wolf. Going into it he didn't realize that his priorities had changed, ie, he had a plan and decided that Bo's life was worth loosing his wolf. When the Norn and Dyson talked they discussed the wolf bargain. When Dyson said, "you can take whatever you need" that was her way in. He (based on his shock and attempt to stop her) didn't know that the deal had changed. That's what I take "loose interpretation" to mean. She flipped the deal. She was always only going to take what mattered most, Dyson just didn't know what that was until it was gone. But I don't get the feeling the Norn would have taken a different deal no matter planning or strategy Dyson used--they aren't used car salesmen they are magic with great powers and I kinda assumed that one of them was knowing what was most valuable to you...otherwise they'd have to talk a lot more. Support: when Dyson came the first time, she instantly knew what defined who he was.

I do agree that the dual sacrifice was kinda redundant, especially given the lame-a*#$ fight Bo was actually engaged in. I personally think it needed to be a lot more major to make it all worthwhile.

I also want to see a smiling Dyson. This season has been really hard on our boy. I just worry love-triangle-wise how they are going to keep them apart if(when) Dyson gets his ability to love back. They went all the way with the one love and it's Bo thing in the first season and there's not much middle ground to go back to to prolong the tension.

  14. I'm sorry I will always like Dyson, we Lycans have to stick together. Though he has been a little... how do I put it nicely like a female dog in heat. Poor Dyson I feel your pain. DUDE STOP FIGHTING WITH HALE! You all are like brothers and hate seeing you all fight :) Though I love the cast all around because they have wonderful energies together!
