King - Season 2 - SpoilerTV advance review

King starts its second season next Wednesday @ 9 PM on Showcase

I recently had the opportunity to watch the first two episodes of the season, here is a quick rundown of what to expect from season 2:

Jessica King is back, attitude, heels and all.

King is pregnant and struggling with it, trying to maintain her toughness but at the same time her hormones are kicking it and she is finding herself strangely emotional about stuff she didn't care about before, she is desperately trying to stop her pregnancy from affecting her work but sometimes she is even forced to run cases from the hospital bed. The identity of the baby daddy seems like it is going to be a mystery for a while. Jess is still trying to make things work with her husband which is complicated by her sister moving in with them, and her husband's continued gambling problems which he lies to her about.

There are three new characters added to the cast replacing MK, Jason and Elena from season 1. These are Pen Martin (Rossif Sutherland), an expert in human behavior with a lot of attitude, he was recently handpicked by King and is the kind of guy that shows up to the crime scene in shorts, his character is rather similar to Patrick Jane in "The Mentalist", Ingrid Evens (Karen Robinson) a woman with a strong moral compass who had retired from field work to a desk job until she is introduced to King in the premiere and after working with her on a case is convinced by King to join her team and return to a more active role, and finally Alessandra Taylor (Romina D'Ugo) Danny's new partner, Danny is now a field officer and his cases tend to cross paths with King and he appears more integrated into the case of the week plots this season. Alessandra doesn't develop much of a personality in the first two episodes and has very limited screen time but things seem like they are going to be tense between her and King, on their first meeting before even knowing who she was King refused to shake her hand.

The case in the premiere is very interesting, it puts King head to head with her former chief who fired her before Season 1, it deals with issues of police corruption. The second case involves a shooting at an illegal gambling club that is connected to her husband.

Despite some casting changes, King is still very much the same show it was in Season 1 and Amy Prince Francis is delightful to watch in the lead role and her performance is very much the highlight of the show. The new characters should provide interesting new dyamics and there is a still a lot of humor despite the dark cases. On the whole, it looks to be an interesting season.

  1. I'm glad to see that the sister is back.  I liked her.  I'm still not thrilled about the baby or the marital situation but at least, as you said, King seems to largely be the same show it was in season one.  That's good news.

  4. Unless there is an actor I really like on the show, I do not care for police dramas.  There must be one on almost every hour in prime time.  You can only tell so many stories without someone repeating somewhere.   I do enjoy Criminal Minds and NCIS but they are not actually regular police dramas.

  5. Lasted less than 30 minutes, less commercials. Not sure who thinks this is slick. In fact, it is clunky and disjointed. The plots are derivative, the characters paper thin, and the performances, especially that of the lead, is on a par with the goings on in high school drama classes across the country.
