The decision to end House after eight seasons wasn't easy — and, it turns out, didn't necessarily have to come at all this year.
According to insiders, star Hugh Laurie and his fellow executive producers David Shore and Katie Jacobs were eager to bring the long-running Fox drama back for one more year, despite conventional wisdom that everyone was ready to move on. One exec believes that Laurie, one of the highest-paid actors on TV (he makes $700,000 an episode), was even prepared to take a pay cut in order to return.

It's sad to see it let go.It's been 8 years after all.I think though they should never had let Lisa go...
ReplyDeleteBTW,since FOX is now practically saving 5 million/episode from House,can they just renew Fringe (even for a 13-episode 5th season)???Just saying,you know...
This article shows the art of making something new of old peices. Congratulations.
ReplyDeleteGetting rid of a big spender surely will give Fringe a better chance, but we're not out of the woods yet. Fingers crossed, as always.
ReplyDeleteYep,i was thinking the same thing! Fringe could certainly use just one days worth of what Hugh made per episode.....Just saying is right!
ReplyDeleteThat makes it a bit harder that 2 of the 3 groups wanted to keep going, but I appreciate Shore, Laurie, and Jacobs not wanting to risk going out without a real ending.
ReplyDeleteAs much as I loved House (and still do), I see this as a lifeline of faint hope to keep Fringe, which is the better program.
ReplyDeleteSo if Fringe survives because of House's death, I am ok with it. If it doesnt, then FOX execs should be fired.
Looks like the network spent too much time listening to internet trolls and not enough to the actual fans, who are still quite happy with how the show is and where it would have been going with another season.
ReplyDeleteI am curious, how do you tell a troll from an actual fan? Those who don't share your opinion about the quality of the show are all trolls, right?
ReplyDeleteAnyway, the suits don't listen, they crunch numbers. And the numbers this season have been disastrous, keeping in mind House's sky-high production costs. It has nothing to do with the quality, or lack thereof.
On the other hand, if the quality were there (as you want to believe), the numbers would have been better. Casual viewers don't care about 'ships, arcs or politics, they watch the show as a whole. And as a whole somehow it failed to live up to their standards - whatever those standards might be.
The definition of a troll lies solely in the manner in which an opinion is expressed. For example, "I didn't agree with the writers decision to , because " is never trolling, regardless of the view point. Dissenting opinions actually make discussions better, as long as they're expressed respectfully (as all opinions obviously should be). "This show sucks!! The writers are stupid!!" with no actual discussion of why is trolling by my definition. Take a brief scan of the comments on any House story/post here or on TVline, and see how many of the negative opinions fall into each category. There are a few of the latter, but most of the negativity is from trolls.
ReplyDelete"as you want to believe"? That's a little sanctimonious, don't you think?
And in season 8 I would draw the distinction between standards and attention span for the casual viewer as support for my claim that the quality is still high.
I wonder why they wanted another year - what they had planned. In any case, at least they get the chance to wrap things up.
ReplyDeleteI was wondering how long it would take before we got one of these "real story" articles with their various unnamed "insider" sources telling their own versions of what happened. The media did the same thing right after the Darabont / Walking Dead story broke.
ReplyDeleteI'll say it again: I'm glad that they decided to end it in a dignified manner rather than take the risk and possibly leave the fans hanging.
ReplyDeleteAnd Mr Hugh Laurie? Class Act!!!!!!!!! as always....
I think its a good think its ending this season. I love the show but I thinks its losing steam with all the cast changes and stuff. It will end with dignity at least.
ReplyDeleteI doubt it will make a difference - the money will probably be ploughed into some big spectacular pilots to try and create a big hit next year, though it may go on retaining cast members on other definitely returning shows that are seeing their costs increase.
ReplyDeleteagree w/ blackwell, for the most part, but what do you expect of the fairly large hipster contingent that House attracted in the first place? without Cuddy and with two fairly new characters and Olivia Wilde gone, of course there was going to be trolling from the fanbase. Not many people - well, at least, not the vocal ones - can accept something as it is, and continue to accept it as it morphs into something slightly different.
ReplyDeleteAbout time. Wasn't happy with what they did to Huddy. Stopped watching after Lisa Edelstein left. Very sad....
