Bunheads - ABC Family Picks up Pilot to Series, Passes on Intercept &Village People

I’ve learned that ABC Family is moving ahead with a series order to Bunheads, its dance drama pilot from Gilmore Girls creator Amy Sherman-Palladino. It will join another new ABC Family series that was picked up last week, comedy Baby Daddy. I hear that the cable network’s 2 other pilots from the current batch, drama Intercept and comedy Village People, are not going forward.

Bunheads stars Sutton Foster as Michelle, a Las Vegas showgirl who impulsively marries a man and moves to his sleepy coastal town, and takes an uneasy role at her new mother-in-law’s dance school. “I spent 20 years of my life with my hair in a bun,” Sherman-Palladino, who got her break as a writer on Roseanne, said when the project was picked up to pilot in September. “I was supposed to be a dancer. My mother was a dancer. Her greatest heartbreak was when I got on Roseanne. So, while writing this will never equal playing ‘Rumpelteazer’ in a bus and truck tour of Cats, it does let me to tip my hat to a really special time in my life.” Bunheads was originally picked up as a cast-contingent pilot in fall 2010 with a different writer.

  1. Are they trying to fill the whole week with original programming or is something about to get canceled? This sounds sorta interesting but it has me a little worried about some of the other shows and how there doing now.

  2. I don't trust Amy after she deliberately decided to fuck up Gilmore Girls before she left.

  3. I agree KG, I was actually just saying that on getglue, but I do love her writing style and sense of humor (and I loooved Gilmore Girls (the original GG in my life) so much that I am willing to give her another chance. If I can keep giving JJ Abrams chance after chance to not eff a show up... I can give Amy another chance and you can too.

  4. I really do think that they are trying to do a whole week of original programming (8p-10p).
Make It or Break It is gone after this season.
Secret Life has one more season.
I think they see a hole where The CW is failing and trying to pick up those viewers in my personal opinion.
But they would probably have to start doing traditional season formats if they really wanted to pull that off. I remember loving Secret Life but the hiatus killed it for me and now I am just a casual

  5.  Well, Lauren Graham mentioned there was an alternate ending where Lorelai didn't cheat on Luke with Christopher, and for some reason, Amy decided not to air that one. Plus, she did other things that I can't remember right now.

  6. Being a huge Gilmore Girls fan I have very little confidence in Amy... not about her writing, but her following through... so I don't really know what to make of this.

  7. This project doesn't seem too promising.  The premise is a bit shaky to me.
