Beauty & The Beast - SpoilerTV pilot script comparison of both versions - couldn't be more different
27 Feb 2012
Pilot ShowsABC's Beauty & The Beast is an epic political fantasy, it centers on the crown Princess Grace who is essentially ruling the country with her father sick and dying (he was poisoned) and her younger brother long missing on a quest to find her lost mother. She also has a younger sister Elizabeth. There is a rebel uprising against her father, The Beast who in this version is not human is a part of the rebel movement against her father, and kidnaps her during the pilot. Grace is extremely close and loyal to her father and is shocked by information the beast reveals to her about her father's less than honorable actions. The scripts plays everything dead serious and is completely different in tone from "Once Upon a Time". The focus is very much on the politics despite the title this is not a romance whatsoever.
There are alot more similarities to CW's The Selection than to the CW version of Beauty & The Beast which is essentially a procedural with no supernatural elements,In the CW version the beast is a deformed afghan-war veteran who has been experimented on. The CW version does have likable characters, and alot more focus on the beauty/beast romance. There is some ongoing background plot regarding her mother's murder which it appears the beast may be connected to.
On the whole the ABC version is much more ambitious but the CW version's characters are more likable and perhaps has more of a romantic draw but is at its core a procedural.

'beast is a deformed'? Sounds like PHANTOM OF THE OPERA to me.Deformed man? - CheckFalls in love with a young attractive woman? - CheckOnly difference is POTO (Andrew Lloyd Webber) is a musical, 25 years in the making.
ReplyDeleteYep,i have to agree, sound like Phantom.
ReplyDeleteNot sure if I like either of them, tbh.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad there are a lot of differences, though.
so, ABC's B&B will be more GoT-ish in a way (or maybe Camelot, since there's no way to compete with GoT). I'm sold in the "not a romance whatsoever." sounds intriguing. Here hoping the casting doesn't flop (much). Don't care much about the CW one since they announced Kristin Kreuk, but will probably watch the pilot.
ReplyDeleteI try and give all new shows a couple of viewings, but from this article CW sounds more interesting. But then I thought The River sounded good..not so much. If I don't like one of the main characters I get un-interested in a hurry. Can't stand the side kick on lost girl, no one can be that stupid and live.lol
ReplyDeleteThank god somebody knew what I was talking about LOL! The smilarites between the two are just too... similar! The former (POTO) obviously being the better of the two.
ReplyDeleteHa,give me Phantom (the play,on Broadway) any day!....
ReplyDeleteEven if they sedated me i couldn't watch that show,i tried,i just couldn't do it.... L)
The ABC show is not Beauty and the Beast. So why call it that?
ReplyDeleteI hate when shows or movies remake a well-known show and then change it so much that is not recognizable as being based on the original. Just ridiculous.
I have no faith in ABC to have a "no romance" series whatsoever. If it starts without any by mid-season there will be love triangles and forbidden love etc... Not to mention how I dislike how Once Upon a Time deals with fairy tales. I may check it out since it sounds good on paper, but I have very little interest or desire for ABC's version.
The CW's version is an updated version of the original and recognizable as such. Kudos.
That said, I don;t have much interest in watching it either, but if the cast intrigues me I may check it out.
If I had to bet ABC's version will stick around and remind me of how much I miss NBC's Kings... a great series about politics based on a fairy tale. XD
Both sound uninteresting to be quite honest
ReplyDeleteThe CW one already makes me want to vomit.
ReplyDeleteThe ABC sounds alright, if it gets to air I'll probably check it out, but I'm not expecting miracles.
The procedural element of the CW one still throws me off. What? Is the beast a rogue vigilante or something? Where's the "procedural" stuff coming from? Guess I need to learn more. Still, describing something as a procedural is not a good way to get me to watch. Though, clearly, that's what draws millions of other people to CBS.
ReplyDeleteActually yes, the Beast IS a rogue vigilante, and Catherine is a cop, together they form a partnership :p so there you go
ReplyDeleteThere I go, indeed. Thanks. (Still not sold on it though.)
ReplyDeleteHhhhmmm.... I'm not head over heals over either, but I have to say, now that I've read this more coherent storyline for the ABC version, I'll probably give them both a shot.
