Bill Pullman has been cast as the President on 1600 Penn, a new pilot in contention for the 2012-2013 season on NBC.
A few hours ago, the lovely Brittany Snow has been cast as his daughter.
A sitcom set in the White House that could eventually, say, replace Whitney (series... hum, "season" finale on March 28), Are You There Chelsea ? (for now she's there, but after March 28 she won't), Up All Night (finale on April 12), Bent (in and out of NBC in three weeks, from March 21 to April 4) or Best Friends Forever (the show has no chance to succeed after Betty White's hidden camera show, but it's a win in itself to avoid the summer burn-off by airing in Are You There Chelsea's time slot, starting on April 4).
There is no way in hell that 1600 Penn could replace Community or Parks and Recreation since NBC wouldn't dare cancelling any of those two comedy treasures.
Oh, what the hell, I'm tired, here's a copy and paste of Deadline's news :
Bill Pullman will be playing an U.S. President again, this time on the small screen. The Independence Day star has been tapped to play President Dale Gilchrist in the NBC comedy pilot 1600 Penn, co-created by Josh Gad, Jason Winer and Jon Lovett and directed by Winer. Produced by 20th TV, it is a dysfunctional family comedy where the out-of-control oldest son (Gad) returns home and becomes not only it’s biggest liability but also the glue holding everyone together. The twist is that this family resides in the White House. Like his character in blockbuster Independence Day, Pullman’s President Gilchrist has military background — he is a heroic ex-Marine.

Is he going to attack aliens again?
ReplyDeleteIt sounds good. Of course, this show would have to go somewhere other than Thursday nights, because I'm counting on my Community / 30 Rock / The Office / Parks and Rec comedy block next season.
ReplyDeleteInteresting that this show, which would start a few weeks before the US election, will feature a white family in the White House when the current presidential family is black. Maybe NBC is secretly thinking that Rick Santorum will get elected and preparing the grounds for that, with a sitcom. President Santorum, that's got a nice ring to it... Mwahahaha.
By the way, if you haven't seen it, check out That's My Bush. It's a 2001 short-lived Comedy Central live-action sitcom from the creators of South Park featuring George Bush and his entourage. I was not convinced at first, but this show quickly grows on you (it's good that it's quick because it lasted only 8 episodes). That's My Bush is not just a mockery of the presidency, it's also a parody of the multi-camera sitcom genre, whether it's catchphrases repeated over and over ("Hey George, it's your favourite neighbor", "Oh Laura, one of these days, I'm gonna punch you in the face"), all the clapping & cheering overly done on purpose, or cheap plot twists ridiculed (the secretary's boobs getting bigger and bigger as time goes by during an episode with the audience whistling, etc).
Anyway, I hope Bill Pullman will deliver moving, patriotic speeches and then go kick some ass in 1600 Penn, except this time it will be cheesy and funny on purpose. Well, on some level, Independance Day is entertaining, but this kind of movie makes Michael Bay look like a master of subtlety and moderation.
Love Bill Pullman!
ReplyDeleteI met him on broadway when he did the play with Julia Stiles
ReplyDeleteI love Bill Pullman. I'll check this show out simply because he's in it.
ReplyDeleteCould be fun!
ReplyDeleteBeen a Pullman fan for over 20 years. Might have to give this a shot.
ReplyDeleteWasn't That's My Bush only cancelled because 9/11 happened and Comedy Central didn't want to be making fun of him during a time of war?
ReplyDeleteActually, the show was cancelled in August 2001 as a cost-cutting move (despite the critical acclaim, the show was very expensive for a sitcom and Comedy Central is a small cable network). But the ending of the season works just fine as a series finale, it looks like it's meant to be one. However, Parker and Stone did say that if the show had been renewed, season 2 would not have played well after 9/11.
ReplyDeleteI like Bill Pullman and he has already been a great President - hopefully this will be a better role for him than Torchwood was.
