Well I applaud SyFy for making a new Science-Fiction series! This one sounds quite interesting to me even if the gaming aspect will be lost on me....
I’ve learned that Ugly Betty and True Blood alum Grant Bowler has been tapped as the lead in Syfy’s new original series Defiance. The project is a live-action drama, written/executive produced by Farscape creator Rockne S. O’Bannon, which was developed concurrently with an online video game by Trion. “Grant’s charismatic charm and his depth as an actor make him the perfect anchor as we build the ensemble for this sweeping adventure series,” said Syfy’s president of original content Mark Stern.
Set on a future Earth, Defiance introduces players and viewers to a world where humans and aliens live together on a planet ravaged by decades of war and transformed by alien terra-forming machines. It centers on Jeb Nolan (Bowler), the law-keeper in a bustling frontier boomtown that is one of the new world’s few oasis of civility and inclusion. Nolan is a former Marine who fought in the alien conflict and suffered the loss of his wife and child in the war. The trauma transformed him into a lone wanderer in the wilds of this new and dangerous world. Defiance seems to be blending Western and alien themes, something that last year’s feature Cowboys & Aliens attempted to do, but the series is set in the future. New Zealander Bowler is best known for his recurring roles as Vanessa Williams’ squeeze on Ugly Betty, as werewolf Cooter on True Blood and as Capt. Gault on Lost. Scott Stewart (Legion) is directing the series, which is slated to begin production April 2012 in Toronto. Universal Cable Prods is producing.

Sounds interesting, but not sure if I want to watch.
ReplyDeleteI'm just happy for a new true Sci-Fi show to be on the horizon. Period.
ReplyDeleteThat is all.
sounds good to me!
ReplyDeleteA show called 'Defiance' that resembles 'Cowboys and Aliens'. Am I the only one amused by the 2 Daniel Craig references?
ReplyDeleteIt will probably just last like a season though :/
ReplyDeleteHmm...Sounds interesting...
ReplyDeleteSadly, this is doomed to failure. Tying it in with an MMO was an awful idea. The game is going to fail miserably and bring down the tv show with it. Nobody is going to leave World of Warcraft or Star Wars: The Old Republic to play Defiance, not a chance.
ReplyDeleteAs with most licensed games, this will almost certainly be a really cheap game with the licensed characters and setting tacked on.
Early on they said the tv show would be influenced by the players. So the lame things that the 100 players do in the game will somehow be translated into the tv show. If the game is free-to-play, they will get 1000s of players (for a little while anyway), but their in-game decisions will be even more lame
I hope they prove me wrong, but my expectations for this show/game couldn't be much lower. Syfy execs don't know much about tv and sc-fi, they certainly don't know anything about games.
I for one am dying for a good sci-fi series, but i left gaming a long time ago. That being said Farscape was such a great show i'm willing to give this a chance...
ReplyDeleteSounds interesting enough to give a look at
ReplyDeleteNo you're not. From reading the title, then seeing the C&A mention I was like... why doesn't this star Daniel Craig?
ReplyDeleteI'm always wary of future earth stories and also war-ravaged and/or post-apocalyptic stories so my interest in this one will definitely be cast-contingent at least.
ReplyDeleteVery happy to see an Aussie making a name for himself - they seem to do quite well in the market place - JOHN NOBLE & ANNA TORV, Fringe; ALAN DALE, Ugly Betty along with Grant and many many others. Very happy indeed.
ReplyDeleteSounds like my cup of tea. Plus I love the guy so I'll certainly give it a try.
ReplyDeleteWait a minute, SyFy producing an actual SCI-FI SERIES?!
