Obviously! I didn't know people were worried about that.... I never not for one moment though that his "taking time off" would mean missing an episode. I just expected he'd film scenes in advance and would be lightly featured in an episode or two... just as it's clearly going to be
Why wouldn't you think it? He nearly missed two episodes (In the Beginning and Weekend at Bobby's) without needing any time off. Also, the fact that he isn't "missing" an episode doesn't mean that we won't have a couple of episodes where Sam is just on the phone or in a straight jacket. That is what a lot of shows do when characters need time off. They just film a scene or two that can be filled in when needed.
I agree and I was concerned too that there might be several Sam-free episodes as we fans obviously were not privy to JP's arranging with the show for "time off. I was having flashbacks to S4 when you computed that "Sam" was "absent" screen time wise for cumulative total of 3 or 4 episodes.
Now I am relieved and I don't really mind how the show accomplishes it as long as the show doesn't make "Sam" a dirtbag while embellishing Dean's angst. I had been thinking this question would come up at Nashcon and it's apparent that there were similar concerns in the fandom.
This chick is totally lucky she's been on set with Jared these past few days, tweeted that he was breaking stuff. I wonder if it was just Jared being Jared or Sam related?
This has me even more intrigued now. I assumed Sam would go to the nut house so Jared could have some time off and we'd maybe see a little of him in there but now I have no idea where they're going with this. Will we see a lot of Sam in the institution? Will his stay be temporary? How is this going to work? I think I would rather see Sam nuts alongside his brother because I'd like to see Dean's reactions and how it affects him alongside how it affects Sam. Some nice brotherly focus.
Like I said could have been avoided had they just told fans outright from the beginning instead of just a 'Jared will be taking some time off' and letting people think there would be no Sam in however many episodes. Off course people are going to think the worst.
Yes, it would be great to see the brothers together on this and how Dean deals with his brother's "insanity problems." After all, looking after Sam has always been the focus of Dean's life. I agree, the more brotherly interaction, the better.
The best episodes have always been those where the brotherly exchange has been intense and meaningful.eg, A Very Supernatural Christmas, Mystery Spot etc.
While "The End" and "In The Beginning" were great episodes, in my opinion Sam's presence would have made them even better. I'm happy to know that "Sam" will not miss any episodes and hope that we get plenty on him and his internal turmoil.
I am still holding out for a light-hearted episode before the end of the season--completely angst -free and full of fun, served up in a gory Supernatural way, of course! :)
Even if I really like an episode the first time through (like the two above, or scarecrow)... If the brothers are "together" in the episode, it won't be an episode I will re-watch over, and over (and over) again. I watch for the brotherly moments... Not the 1 minute scenes with Sam on the phone while Dean looks in the fridge... or even worse... the ones where Sam is fighting monster A while Dean is fighting monster B with NO communication between them at all!
Even though I really love Free to be You and Me (both parts), I have only watched a few scenes over and over. The episode as a whole is a total miss for me after watching it the first time. I want the guys together. Even when they are mad at each other, it is just so much better when they are together (like the Jack Johnson song)...
True, but he did make an appearance. All these were Sam LIGHT episodes. VERY Light but he was still there. I was expecting in the least something of the same. It's not the best but it is better than nothing.
Also take in account maybe the one episode where he *had* to take time off: No exit. Jared had surgery on his hand scheduled for that week. One of the reasons why it was such a Jo heavy episode. But still he was present. Not promtly featured, bu there.
It's too much of a strecth IMO to think he wouldn't even make like a 5 sec appearance in an episode. It's him and Jensen. They can't afford to not have one at all in it. TPTB know that very well.
SO yeah. I didn't think Sam would disappear off the face of the earth. I just assumed he'd probably be reduced to a scene of two, for a couple of episodes.
I don't understand how someone can care about an actor and their character and still be so upset if they were taking a little time off to be with wife when having a baby. Does not compute for me. I am very happy for them and that Jared wants to be with Gen.
Good news! I'm sad for him that he won't get to spend a bit more time with his family, but selfishly happy that he won't be disappearing from our screens :)
I completely agree with you. It's the dynamic between the brothers that makes the show, whether they be happy, sad or angry with each other. There should be more on-screen togetherness, not less.
The scene at the end of "Good God, Y'All" where Sam leaves Dean sitting at the picnic table and goes off on his own was one of the most depressing moments in the whole show. You could see that poor Sam didn't want to leave but he went along with what Dean thought was for the best, and it was totally sad.
Free to be You And Me was a good episode but one that I just wouldn't choose to watch unless I was going to watch the whole season in order. The scenes where Sam learns that he is Lucifer's vessel and that he has no way out just made me feel so bad for him.
Having another Weekend at Bobby's kind of episode wouldn't bother me so much if there was even one Mystery Spot type of episode for Sam. But, there hasn't been. We had Death's Door for Bobby and Time After Time for Dean (which came right after the very Dean heavy Adventures in Babysitting and precedes the presumed to be Dean heavy Slice Girls). The closest to a real Sam Centric episode that we have had this season was Girl Next Door and Jared had much less screen time than Jensen (who also directed). Without Colin Ford's scenes, it would have easily been a Dean centric episode. Current Sam was practically mute during the episode except while he was talking to Dean about Amy.... It's not really feeling terribly balanced this season.
That scene in Good God, Y'all messed me up too. Sam suggested the split, but you could tell that he was expecting an argument... Then the whole wiping each other out of their lives stuff just killed me... Dean's comment about not having laughed that hard in years... and he's happier without his brother... lies or not, they hurt. Then, blowing Sam off in the beginning of The End. Those have got to be the 3 most painful consecutive episodes ever! Oh, and we might as well add Sympathy for the Devil in there... What with Bobby getting possessed and stabbed, and Dean saying things will never be the same, he just doesn't trust Sam any more... Argh!
This is good news. When one of the two stars is gone, it's always tougher on the other. One thing that will easier for Jared is Genevieve and Jared believe in family. She has said her career is on the back burner until the show is finally over. She and the their son will be with him. Jensen doesn't have that. Danneel says no children is his fault because he works long hours and is in Vancouver.
id like to see proof that danneel said that cause otherwise its just bullcrap coming from your mouth now where did she exactly did she say that cause i doubt out loud that its jensnens fault
I agree with your statement "of, course we were going to expect the worst." I'm not apologizing for being "concerned about Sam" when JP is taking "some, not much time off."
The issue for me and many others was never about JP taking as much "Paternity leave" as he (and Gen) could get for both parents to be with (and JP to bond with) their to-be-born/newborn son, it was that what the show was going to do with "Sam" w/r/t to vagueness of the original statement. When your fav brother is Sam but you love Dean, too, you want them to share at least some moments in every, *every* episode , even if Dean is just at Sam's bedside. If the show announced in advance that JP (Sam) was not going to be on set at all for the finale episode (s), just Dean, Garth, Frank, Jodi and whoever MC's character is going to be -and there was going to be a showdown with the Levis, I would be a little upset but as I've said before, whether I watched Samless episodes"live" or delayed would depend on how the show explained "Sam's absence".
I don't know where you read about Genevieve saying that she is going to put her career on the back burner. The last I heard was she took a year off acting to be married and that was at Paleyfest, but I haven't read interviews with her since, so I don't know anything about that.
But you took the Danneel Ackles quote out of context. Earlier this season, there were rumors on twitter that she was pregnant. She addressed those rumors I think through the "Awful Truth." Over on E! (That really obnoxious mean guy's blog.) Like back in late August. She say something to the effect of "it's not me." (We now know who it was.) She when on to say that her and Jensen both had decided to wait until Supernatural was over. (Which is something Jared had said at conventions too, but nature had other plans.) She joked that Jensen worked too much as has both Jared and Jensen joked about having kids who wouldn't know them because they worked too much. But it's not like she was saying anything mean about him or that it's his fault. But that guy's blog is usually really mean and the comments get really nasty and trash everyone and everything. So, you have to be careful reading stuff like that. That might be were you're getting the impression that she said something like that, but it's a really biased nasty blog. So, be careful because it is easy to read something hurtful about the actors and their relationship. Anyway, all of them stay really private about their personal life. So, you don't hear much about them. But family is really important to all of them as far as I know and have seen.
I would have to respectfully disagree with that - it was more balanced than some eps, yes, but that's a pretty low bar and it still felt very Dean-centric to me. A few decent scenes of Sam with Sheriff Mills didn't really match up to time travel, getting to play off of Nicholas Lea, dressing up in period costume, getting to play with pop culture references out of context in the 40s, hunting the bad guy in his own time, etc. I actually think that Sheriff Mills had more focus in that ep than Sam, personally.
I guess I just don't see "most balanced" as necessarily meaning "not Dean-centric", considering the low bar on what constitutes "most balanced".
Agreed. Sam has been totally neglected all season, and we've been told over and over again by the show and other fans to just wait, Sam will get his turn, Sam's got story arcs coming up, it'll balance out. But we're still focusing on Dean until at least ep after next, Cas is returning for three eps (which will probably mean lots of Dean focus due to their "epic man-angel bond" and Dean's feelings of betrayal/grief), we still need to wrap up the Levi story line (or at least bring it to a head), and even though Jared is not missing eps that's no guarantee that he won't be relegated to a minor role AGAIN (hello, AIB). We're quickly running out of episodes for this promised Sam arc, and honestly I can't help but worry that it will just never come. It seems like they're always postponing Sam's POV, and it always gets cut short. Season 6 Sam was GONE half the eps and that sucked - but I thought at the end of the season "well, they're going to make up for it with this whole wall story line because all that soulless Sam time was building up to a big, intense arc for him. Okay, I can deal with that." And then the wall story line didn't come to a head until the end of the season. So I thought "well, next season at least we're going to start right in on some good Sam POV and a big story for him, since the wall is down and Sera says it's going to be a problem." We got two decent eps, then BOOM. No more Sam POV. "Wait until the second half of the season," they said. And now here we are coming into the second half of the season and we've got Cas coming back, Levis to deal with, and Jared potentially being reduced in some eps because of the baby. I can't help but worry, based on track record, that when it comes down to the wire suddenly Sam's story will get pushed back AGAIN. I hope not, I really do. But I can't help preparing for the worst while I hope for the best.
I mean, even with Jared 100% available they relegated him to plot wallpaper. It's hard to have confidence that he'll have much focus when his availability is potentially reduced, considering the fact that he's treated like a side character even without extenuating circumstances.
I tend to agree with you. Sam is full of problems, from his Hell memories to the Soulless Sam ones but he never seems to get to address them personally.
It's always twisted around to someone else's point-of-view and, now with Bobby dead, everything ends up inevitably in Dean's hands. I love Dean too, and it's not his fault if the writers act this way but it's just all uneven. We are due for the clown episode soon. I'm curious to see how that goes.
If one looks back to the first three seasons, this thing about who had more or less plot is never brought up because the brothers were always on screen together and even in those moments when apart, each had their little story to play out.
This all began, in my opinion, with Season 4, when they started to separate the brothers and pair them off with other characters, no longer writing for Sam and Dean as a team but giving them individual arcs to play out.
They said that this season it would be back to Sam and Dean against the world. They still have some episodes left. Let's hope they make that statement come true.
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.
Okay, that makes me feel a little better!
ReplyDeleteCan't wait until Padababy is here. I want to hear his name!
Gr8 :) thanks for that
ReplyDeleteThanks! I'm glad he gets the time off and we don't have to miss Sam for any episodes! Both sound great!!
ReplyDeleteTHANK GOD!!!!!!!!!! Major relief. Best news I've heard in a while.

I'm eagerly awaiting the Padababy, too.
ReplyDeleteSo all that panicking a few weeks back was all for nothing.
ReplyDeletePaternity leave rocks, and his child's birth is more important than a TV show, but I'm glad Padalecki won't miss any episodes.
ReplyDeleteI didnt think he would but it is nice to hear it lol
ReplyDeleteGood to hear.

Time After Time wasn't Dean-centric at all to me,. In fact, that was probably the most balanced episode between the brothers of them all.
