Round 1 is complete and we head into round 2 of the Best Supernatural Comedy Episode Contest. We are left with 16 contenders and I think people will be happier with the choices today. Except for one, it's definitely easier for me to vote. Round 3 will be another story entirely. Again, voting here will close at 9 PM St. Louis time.
In other news, we are only a couple of hours from completing both the Best Song nominees and round 6 of the ranking polls. If you haven't voted yet, hurry. We also have the run-off for the Best Song-to-Scene nominees. Choose up to 2 songs. Remember this is not your favorite song but the one that fits mostly perfectly with the scene it is played in (lyrics, tempo, etc.).

With the exception of the pre-Ghostfacers (Hell House) vs Ghostfacers round, everything is easy for me here. The big problem becomes the song-to-scene poll. In all honesty, I don't get how Eye of the Tiger, Heat of the Moment, or Smoke on the Water fit. They are all excellent songs. The all have standout places in the series. But as far as them being the perfect song to fit the scene, I don't see it. The Eye of the Tiger is some random song playing in the Impala with Dean air drumming. It could have been any song. The ending clip was funny but it isn't part of the episode, only an add on, so Jensen's hilarious outtake rendition doesn't even count. Heat of the Moment has the same problem. It's a random song playing on the radio over and over again. It could have been any song, Dean hand gestures aside. Even worse the lyrics completely don't match because it's about a man's old lover who has grown old. Smoke on the Water is about a real-life casino fire in Paris so it makes no sense either. I guess this would fit if the Impala was on fire but she's being untarped. It's a great beat but not a song-scene match for me.
ReplyDeleteI'm of two minds about Rooster and Silent Lucidity. Rooster for me is a perfect song characterization of John Winchester, being about Marine gunners in Vietnam. However, they are definitely being pursued by Henrickson in this episode and it's for sure he wants them dead or alive. Silent Lucidity has a beautiful, haunting vibe to it that perfectly matches the scene but the lyrics are about comforting a child who wakes from a nightmare. It's about taking control of your nightmares, which I guess in a way could be what Madison was trying to do. Take control of a situation where she was the nightmare.
As for the rest, Ready for Love is pretty straightforward. "I'm ready for love, oh baby, ready for love" fits with a sex scene. What really works for me though is the opening lines that talk about not knowing where the signer is heading and about bitter ends. While the singer remains hopeful, there is a sense of weariness and past troubles that fits with the series, especially in midseason 4. Simple Man in the Dean/Sam montage works for me from a Sam point of view. Sam is trying to get back to a simpler life and his daily grudge is contrasted with Dean's hunting world. It's poignant and even fits with the title. Of course for me the best fit is What a Wonderful World where Dean is happy in a world where his mother and Jessica are still alive, nothing is trying to kill anyone he loves, and he can just savor the joys of everyday life like having a beer after mowing the lawn. To Dean this is his version of a wonderful life and he just has to celebrate it.
In the end, I decided on What a Wonderful World and Simple Man. Both seem to capture the essence of the scene in lyrics and mood and that to me is what a best song-to-scene song needs to do. As far as episodes go, I voted Changing Channels (still the best), Hell House (because there was at least some non-Ghostfacer time), Bad Day at Black Rock (another of the top 3 comedies), Frontierland (only because it is not Yellow Fever), French Mistake (another awesome comedy), Slash Fiction (LeviaBrothers over fairies any day), Tall Tales (it's funny AND doesn't have Becky or Chuck), and Mystery Spot (the last of the 3 best comedies).
Still thinking Mystery Spot takes the big prize.
ReplyDeleteeverything was easy for me as well, except the song-to-scene stuff. I went with Simple Man (which was utterly brilliant and might be my all-time favorite) and Silent Lucidity.
ReplyDeleteThis was super easy except for Hell House v Ghostfacers. That made me waiver. Ghostfacers got it for the jingle and the bleeped out swearing. I've always wanted to see the uncensored version of that episode! I'd love to hear Dean swearing a blue streak! Song wise, I was totally out of step with the fandom! I picked Silent Lucidity and Simple Man.
ReplyDeleteOh me too! The Simple Man montage at the beginning of Free To Be You And Me is my favourite of the series. Beautiful juxtapositioning of the boys separate lives. And Silent Lucidity in Heart is so haunting and the boy's performances so heart wrenching. I just couldn't go past these two.
ReplyDeleteChanging Channels
ReplyDeleteHell House - darn that OCD that says I can't not vote.
Bad Day at Black Rock
Frontierland
The French Mistake
Slash Fiction
Tall Tales
Mystery Spot
The only one of these I found truly difficult was choosing between Hell House and Ghostfacers, as I don't particularly find either of them funny.
As for the song-to-scene poll, the only ones that make sense to me in the context of the poll are Ready For Love, Simple Man and What A Wonderful World. The others are all great, but as for a song to scene match - they just don't.
So I chose Simple Man and What a World. In the end, just because I like them more than Ready for Love
We voted exactly the same way in all things and I agree on Hell House and Ghostfacers. I went with Hell House because it had more of Dean and Sam without Harry and Ed. Also I actually liked the line "What would Buffy do?" and that's about all I liked about Harry and Ed.
ReplyDeleteAs for the song nominees, these baffled me more than the comedy choices. I understand they are great songs and I like them too. I even agree that they are canon in Supernatural and that I will always associate these songs with the series. Still if a song could have been traded with almost anything else on the air and not fit the scene any differently, it's not a strong song-to-scene moment for me.
My Heart Will Go On - Just as funny as Channels without the meta.
ReplyDelete* no vote * - I refuse to vote for any episode with a Ghostfacer in it.
Bad Day At Black Rock - Black Rock is a funny episode. Monster at the End is a standard episode with one or two humorous moments. Big difference.
Frontierland - Honestly, neither Frontierland or Yellow Fever are all that funny but Frontierland is a better episode.
The French Mistake - A Very Supernatural Christmas isn't funny.
Clap Your Hands If You Believe - Lots of chuckle-worthy stuff. Slash Fiction is a serious episode with a few humorous moments.
Tall Tales - I'll take Trickster over Becky any day.
Weekend At Bobby's - This is my one vote that isn't objective. I've seen Mystery Spot too many times and it's just not amusing or entertaining to me any more. Heat of the Moment can bite me. Asia sucks.
Song Picks - Ready For Love & Rooster
It's amazing how often we do end up voting the same. You know what they say about great minds.... :)
ReplyDeleteNow we're getting down to the real nitty-gritty and aside from Slash Fiction, all these episodes are my go-to choices for when I need a laugh. I can't reiterate what I've said about these episodes already, so I won't. But my votes were this:
ReplyDelete1. Changing Channels (I just rewatched this on Monday and it is true comedy gold, may be my favorite episode for laughs)2. Hell House
3. Bad Day at Black Rock (I also rewatched this on Monday, and also hilarious, though the LpM (Laughs per Minute) were less than Changing Channels, it's still so, so funny.)
4. Yellow Fever
5. French Mistake
6. Slash Fiction
7. Tall Tales
8. Mystery Spot
Man, I voted on the song-to-scene before I realized it was SONG-TO-SCENE! I want to change my choices now!! Oh well. They're all great songs, but for going with their respective scene...well, a few don't fit the bill necessarily. So I accidentally voted for Eye of the Tiger and Silent Lucidity (when I thought it was just another fav song...shows you what happens when you skim the leading paragraphs). If I were voting for real, I'd vote for Simple Man and Ready for Love...though I do think Silent Lucidity is a good song for the scene it is in; however it wouldn't beat out the other two. But at least my vote was kind of half-right.
Thanks for the thoughtful rundown of the songs! Seems maybe people, when nominating, forgot to really think about the song in context with the scene. Should be interesting to see the final poll.
ReplyDeleteWas easy except for the same as most people Hell House vs Ghostfacers. Hell House i think was just funner. I still think it will come down to Mystery Spot and The French Mistake
ReplyDeleteThe funny thing is that every one of these songs, with the exception of What a Wonderful World, has made it into the best song competition. I think that is the place for most of them to be because then the only qualification is that you like it and it's been on Supernatural. There it doesn't matter if its part of a scene, outtake, or previously and it certainly doesn't matter how well the song fits.
ReplyDeleteHere are the songs that have made it into this summer's Best Song Competition in the order they ranked in nominations. Hope your favorites are in here. No surprise that #1 is.....
ReplyDelete1. Carry on Wayward Son
2. Renegade
3. Back in Black
4. Eye of the Tiger
5. Wanted Dead or
Alive
6. O Death
7. Don't Fear the

8. Rock of Ages
9. Knockin' On

Mystery Spot and the French Mistake will likely go against each other in the semi-finals. However since they are on the same side of the bracket, only one of them will advance to the finals. Whichever one wins the round will most likely go up against Changing Channels, Bad Day at Black Rock, or maybe Yellow Fever.
ReplyDeleteall comedy polls were easy today
ReplyDeletechanging channels - one of the series best comedy episodes
hell house - i love both of these but i think this one is funnier.
bad day at black rock - probably the best comedy episode of the series
yellow fever - dean in this episode is hilarious
the french mistake - another one of the best comedy episodes
slash fiction - i don't remember much of clap your hands but slash was funnier
tall tales - everything trickster is an amazing comedy and this is no exception
mystery spot - see tall tales
going through these stages of the polls i have realised, supernatural does comedy so well, some of these episodes are so much funnier than episodes of most comedies that are out there.
song wise, i love eye of the tiger in yellow fever and heat of the moment in mystery spot but i don't think that those songs specifically fit the scenes that well. i went with what a wonderful world because it matches the scene in what is and what should never be perfectly
i also went with smoke on the water because it was nice to hear some good old rock music when we saw the impala again after that time without her
i reckon it'll end up being french mistake vs. bad day at black rock
ReplyDeletealthough changing channels against bad day at black rock is hard to call
Much easier than 1.5 for me.
ReplyDeleteChanging Channels, Ghostfacers,Bad Day @ Black Rock (kind of surprised myself w/ this choice), Yellow Fever, French Mistake (had to think on this one but...I like my decision), Clap Your Hands (as a comedy ep it beats Slash Fiction), (Gonna have to come back to the Tall Tales Real ghostbusters pair)
ReplyDeleteWeekend @ Bobby's, Gotta pick Real Ghostbusters...I liked the guest Sam and Dean enough to push this ep out in front)
The song run off is really difficult without the scene or ep info being included. Need to research.
Music pics: Ready for Love, Silent Lucidity
ReplyDeleteAnd here we are again! ;)
ReplyDeleteFirst poll: My Heart will Go On is plenty funny, but it can't beat out Changing Channels for me. CC has Gabriel, for one thing, and just...tons of fun stuff. (The Herpexia ad, for one thing, Sampala for another, and just lots more.) I had to go with Changing Channels. This was pretty easy.
Second poll: This was a little more difficult. I don't rewatch either of these episodes a lot. They're both okay, but not in my top ten, or even my top twenty, really. But I like Hell House a little more, so in the end it's the one I went with.
Third poll: Pretty difficult. I like both of these episodes, and I think they're both funny. But the Monster at the End of This Book can't compete with BDABR. Even if Bela was in it (EW!!!) Bad Day at Black Rock is just awesome. Sam losing his shoe, his bad luck in the motel room especially, Dean being Batman, that fork death!!! Gross! I love it, so Bad Day at Black Rock it is for me!
Fourth Poll: Huh. I like Yellow Fever, but I went with Frontierland for this one. I just remember Dean and his enthusiasm for the old west, and Sam and the horse and the magic brick... I had to. XD Frontierland it is.
Fifth Poll: I love both of these episodes! This was hard! But The French Mistake is hilarious, and I love A Very Supernatural Christmas so much, but it's just not as funny. Plus it has bits that make me sad (those flashbacks, cute as they were, were really sad to me. John not being there, and Dean stealing presents to have something to give to Sam. And Sam finding out the truth. And then there's the ending scene with grown Sam and Dean in the motel room. Makes me teary every time.) While with The French Mistake I can't stop laughing. So I'm going with The French Mistake.
Sixth Poll: I like Clap Your Hands...but I love Slash Fiction! (My second favorite s7 ep after Death's Door!) Leviachesters or faeries? Leviachesters it is! Slash Fiction is my choice.
Seventh Poll: This was pretty easy. I like Real Ghostbusters, but Tall Tales is pretty hilarious. And it has Gabriel! And prissy!Sam! And Dean being a pig, and bickering boys, and Bobby being sensible. WIN. Tall Tales for me!
Eighth poll: Aaah, not even a choice. As I've said time and time again, Mystery Spot is my ultimate favorite episode of ALL TIME. And anyway, I find (the first half) it funnier than WAB though I do like that episode. So Mystery Spot is the one I picked.
Best Song to Scene: In the end I only voted for one, What a Wonderful World. The other ones I either don't know/remember or didn't really match the scene. But I think What a Wonderful World really fits the scene (and that scene always makes me smile!)
I wish. :) I love that ep so much!
ReplyDeleteOf course Carry On My Wayward Son is #1! Glad to see Don't Fear the Reaper and Renegade are in there as well. Just because of SPN, I ended up with all three on my playlist. XD
ReplyDelete1. Changing Channels
ReplyDelete2. Hell House - brother pranks
3. Bad Day at Black Rock
4. Frontierland
5. The French Mistake
6. Slash Fiction
7. Tall Tales
8. Mystery Spot
Song to Scene
1. What a Wonderful World
2. Was between Ready for Love & Simple Man. I love both songs and they both seems to fit their scene scnenes fairly well. I went with Simple Man over Ready for Love. I think Dean was more Ready for Sex than Ready for Love while I think Simple Man went well with the life Sam wanted to have.
Eye of the tiger all the way!
ReplyDelete1. Changing Channels
ReplyDelete2. Hell House, because there is LESS Ghost Facers, have never seen anything funny about them, just stupid.
3. Bad Day at Black Rock, just watched this yesterday and still LOL at Sam and I love Bela, Lauren was excellent as Rose on TVD also.
4. Yellow Fever, I always laugh with the "big" dog chasing Dean and the cat in the locker.
5. The French Mistake is my favorite comedy ep, this show does not have a problem making fun of its self.
6. Clap Your Hands if You Believe, Sam is so much fun trying to figure out how he is supposed to act with a soul, and my favorite quote comes from this ep. Empathy Sam, empathy.
7. The Real Ghostbusters, what can I say I think Chuck is funny.
8. Mystery Spot, first half is just good fun.
I'm going off the reservation on this one as they put Eye of the Tiger in the ep on TV, not just as bonus on the DVD, so I call it in the ep. lol So sue me. Also What a Wonderful World.
The Gabriel episodes rule the comedy cathegory. No question there.
ReplyDeleteThis was hard!
ReplyDeleteI love "Simple Man" and I think it's perfect. So was Silent Lucidity.
The voting was easy on this one. I knew pretty what episodes i preferred. I am having problems with Eye of the Tiger. What made that song the hit was Jensen video at the end and it really had nothing to do with the story. It was an outtake on a practical joke by Jared on Jensen. I Love the songs on the list, but I chose Simple Man and What a Wonderful World. There were several I liked enough to vote for. I loved Silent Lucidity, but in the end iw as these two.
ReplyDeleteI just finished watching A Very Supernatural Christmas and was wondering if Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas was even in the running, that song was perfect in that scene.
ReplyDeleteExactly my feeling! "Eye of the Tiger" was a stand-alone, "out take" performance and while funny it had no true episode "scenes" attached. For me as with you and klutzy_girl my top pick was "Simple Man" and like "k_girl" my second pick was Silent Lucidity. With this criteria, in third place for me would be "Rooster".
ReplyDeleteIt was nominated in both Best Song and Best Song-to-Scene but didn't get enough nominations to make it into either.
ReplyDeleteThat's to bad, it fit better than a lot that are being voted on, I know like Eye of the Tiger, but I STILL say that was in the ep. LOL
ReplyDeleteIt's getting late here, so my comments are going to be a lot shorter than usual. Plus, at this stage in the polls, I've already described why I like each episode, and I don't want to bore people by repeating it. Anyway, these were almost universally easy:
ReplyDelete--Poll 1: Changing Channels. No explanation needed.
--Poll 2: Hell House. I enjoyed both the Ghostfacer episodes, but I think the first one was marginally better.
--Poll 3: Bad Day at Black Rock. "I lost my shoe."
--Poll 4: Frontierland. As much as the ending irritated me, it was infinitely better and more humourous than Yellow Fever.
--Poll 5: The French Mistake. A Very Supernatural Christmas is an excellent episode which I would have voted for had it been in a lot of the other polls today, it just had the misfortune to go up against the titan of comedy that is The French Mistake.
--Poll 6: Slash Fiction. Toughest one for me today, as I actually liked Clap Your Hands if You Believe. It can't hold a candle to Slash Fiction though.
--Poll 7: Tall Tales. Way funnier than a parody of Supernatural conventions littered with Wincestuous references.
--Poll 8: Mystery Spot. Sorry, Weekend at Bobby's, Mystery Spot is both funnier and one of my favourite episodes ever.
--Music Poll: Heat of the Moment, What a Wonderful World. As a song, I would actually prefer Eye of the Tiger to What a Wonderful World, but when it comes to appropriate music, WaWW is way ahead on brownie points.
1)Changing Channels.Very easy even though I liked My Heart Will Go On a lot.
ReplyDelete2)After much thought, neither.Sorry,I just can't stand the Ghostfacers...
3)Bad Day at Black Rock. One of the best episodes as far as comedy goes against an episode that I liked but I don't consider comedy.
4)Yellow Fever. If only for Dean's monologue and the dog chase!
5)The French Mistake.I think I praised it enough in the previous polls..
6)Clap Your Hands if You Believe.By default,as I don't consider Slash Fiction a comedy.
7)Tall Tales. The Real Ghostbusters was fun at times but it can't really compare.
8)Mystery Spot.Again,Weekend at Bobby's,not a comedy for me.
And Ready For Love and Simple Man are my song-to-scene choices. What A Wonderful World is ruled out simply because I nominated it in the best song competition and I've decided to nominate a song only in one poll..
Eye of the Tiger is certainly a memorable song, but mostly because of the end clip which isn't a part of the episode. Can't really vote for it when there are so many great songs.

You've mentioned Eye of the Tiger twice now so I'm guessing you want a debate on it. Yes, The Eye of the Tiger was part of a scene in Yellow Fever. It came about 14 minutes into the episode when Dean is in the Impala air drumming. It ends when Sam bangs of the roof. However, the outtake shown at the end of the episode with Jensen rocking out on top of the car is NOT a scene from that episode. It is a hilarious outtake. It was not scripted nor is it meant to be considered Winchester canon at all. In all Supernatural major websites and in every interview I've read about the episode it is called an outtake, which traditionally is not considered part of the episode itself. However the most telling part of it not being a part of the episode is that the screen goes black and the ending credits begin to roll. Once it says Executive Producers Eric Kripke and Robert Singer, the official episode is over. Any Easter eggs after that are just bonus material. It would be like saying that the previews for the next episode are part of the current episode simply because they air right afterwards. Or in movie terms, it would be like saying the gag reels that are shown during the movie ending credits are an actual part of the movie's story.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you 100%, but that clip is mostly what I think of when the name Yellow Fever comes up, well that and the dog and cat scenes.
ReplyDelete
