It's finally here! The nominations have been tallied. The final episodes have been voted into the contest. Now it's time to determine the best Supernatural comedy episode so far. Typically, beginning rounds are easier so hopefully there's no hair pulling today. In order to get this contest done as close to one week as possible, voting will end at 9:00 PM St. Louis time (about 22 hours of voting). This will allow me to put up the next set of polls by midnight my time each day or hopefully earlier. Happy voting and remember, comments are the fireworks of life. There's no wrong way to vote so please share why you voted the way you did.
Other Supernatural polls and nominations still open: Ranking polls for the ultimate episode contest this summer - round 4 (until midnight), round 5 and round 6. Nominations for best song (ends tonight at midnight) and best song-to-scene (ends tomorrow).

I'm going to vote against the grain for most of this contest because in order for me to consider something the best comedy episode, I actually have to like it too. It won't be about which one made me laugh the most, although it's not about which one I like the most either. Instead, if I hated it, it's automatically out. If I liked both, it's about which one is funniest to me, whether that is for the episode as a whole or one particularly funny scene. which of course will be harder to determine once we get closer to the end. Today it's relatively easy.
ReplyDelete1. Changing Channels - I don't like After School Special at all and I think Changing Channels is the best comedy. So pretty simple.
2. My Heart Will Go On - I don't like Swap Meat at all (and this is the biggest surprise of the contest to me) and I loved the scene where Dean and Sam are trying to tempt fate. Other moments of comic genius include the brothers playing rock, paper, scissors and Dean winning, Ellen and Bobby's first banter, "accidents don't just happen accidentally", the hideous lawyer interview - really Dean?, most things Ellen, everything Balthazar and Celine Dion, "no Kutcher references", "Dayrunner of Death", Dean's reaction to Jerk Lawyer's death, and more.
3. Unknown until I watch both again. I'm not the biggest fan of Hell house but the pranks were fun.
4. Season 7, Time for a Wedding - Never in a million years did i think i'd ever vote for this one but it did make me laugh (yes even Becky) and I loathe Ghostfacers. Easy choice.
5. Bad Day at Black Rock - ah, this one could have been tough. I think Sam, Interrupted is an undervalued comedic gem. But it's against Bad Day at Black Rock which along with Changing Channels makes claim to the best all-around comedy of them all. Tough luck on the draw Sam, Interrupted. Maybe next time.
6. Free to be You and Me - By default. I rarely rewatch this episode but Chuck was a big downfall of the season and he introduced us to Becky. Utter failure on his part.
7. You can't make me vote for either episode. I can't stand Yellow Fever more every time I watch it and my stomach can't handle a rewatch of My Bloody Valentine to see if it is funny.
8. It's a Terrible Life - Another devalued comedy in my opinion and Frontierland will win this one easily.
I voted in all but two since there were some later eps I haven't seen yet. But a lot of these definitely stand out!
ReplyDeleteJust curious. Are you starting Supernatural or did you stop part way through? I won't end up voting in all of them either, especially if it's two episodes I don't like or sometimes if it is two episodes I adore and I just can't make up my mind. :-)
ReplyDeleteI went with Changing Channels, My Heart Will Go On, Folsom Prison Blues, Bad Day at Black Rock, Free to Be You and Me, and Frontierland - all of those were pretty easy choices for me.
ReplyDeleteThe REAL challenge was between Ghostfacers/Season 7, Time for a Wedding and Yellow Fever/My Bloody Valentine. I absolutely loathe the Ghostfacers, but I loathe Becky just as much. In the end, I had to go with Season 7, Time for a Wedding - there were some decent moment that DIDN'T involve Becky, so it got my vote. I went with My Bloody Valentine in the second poll - I kind of cocked my head to the side at that one, since I don't ultimately see it as a comedic episode.. but Castiel was entertaining, and the look on their faces every time someone got hugged by the Cupid was pretty priceless.. Yellow Fever just annoys me, so I didn't consider it for long.
I followed it for years and then stopped watching partway through season six. I mean to return to it but haven't felt like it. It's one of two shows I quit watching but haven't actually given up on. (The other being Burn Notice.)
ReplyDeleteHa! I feel your pain on those. Choosing the lesser of two evils when your choices are the Ghostfacers and Becky is nigh on impossible. If the vote is close, I will probably go ahead and vote for My Bloody Valentine too simply because I can't stand Yellow Fever.
ReplyDeleteMy votes went like this:
ReplyDeleteChanging Channels - beats out After School Special, even though I kind of love it, because it is definitely far more humorous. Seeing the boys have to be "in" various genre of TV...oh man. I especially loved Dean and his man-crush on Dr. Sexy. He knows a little too much about that "show"... ;)
No Vote (Swap Meat and My Heart Will Go On) - Honestly I don't like either of these episodes that much, and certainly not for "best comedy". So I didn't vote this round.
Hell House - The brothers pranking each other makes this episode, and I think this is where I firmly fell in love with Sam and Dean and their dysfunctional relationship.
No Vote (Ghostfacers and Season 7, Time for a Wedding) - again, for comedy, neither of these eps works for me, though otherwise I like them well enough.
Bad Day at Black Rock - This and Changing Channels are my personal comedy fav's...and I love BDaBR for everything that it is. The side characters are hilarious (bummed Gordon eventually killed Kubrick later on, though) and everything that happens around that silly rabbit's foot is pure comedy gold. The ONLY downside to this episode is Bela...I was never a fan of that character.
Monster at the End of This Book - The looks on the guys faces when they are confronted with LARPing in the comics shop, and then when the publisher grills them on Sam and Dean trivia? Epic. Also, I adore Chuck and Rob Benedict has a great way of playing his despair in a way that's funny, yet also endearing. I also LOVE Grover and my favorite book as a kid was...The Monster at the End of This Book. So...
Yellow Fever - frightened Dean. Even though what it signifies is kind of sad, and even though Sam is a bit dickish, I love seeing Jensen get to stretch his acting muscles. Specifically, the rant he gives Sam outside the police station before he "quits" and then gets chased by a miniature dog.
Frontierland - I don't consider this episode really a comedy, but I can see why it's here and because I love it anyway, I voted. Dean's pure joy at the old west is hilarious, and I do love at the beginning when he finds Colt's journal and Sam asks to see it and tries to take it away that Dean holds it to him and tells him to "Get your own". Also...Star Trek 4 reference! And Bobby, "I only watched Deep Space 9"...LOL!!!! Okay, so maybe this episode is funnier than I thought.
Man, now I want to go watch all these!!!
our voting parameters are exactly the same. though our actual votes are quite different, and opposite, save two of the polls!
ReplyDeleteBoy do we think alike. although I went the other way on Ghostfacers vs Season Seven Time for a Wedding. I loathe the Ghostfacers, but I enjoyed Sam and Dean being bleeped and getting the better of the GF's in the end. I refused to vote on My Bloody Valentine/Yellow Fever because I really loathe YF and I'm cold on MBV as well. Someone else can make that decision.
ReplyDeleteHa! I often find myself alone in my opinions of the comedy episodes. It may be because I tend to hate meta (except French Mistake). It may be because I find some characters annoying that others find endearing. It may be that I often find the comedy episodes hugely out of character and that bugs. But it's probably because my funny bone is askew and two sizes too small. I adore the snarky one-liners and dry wit in any given episode usually a whole lot better than the full out comedies. In fact, I'll go on record as saying some of the lines in the dreaded Route 666 were better than some of the comedies in this contest.
ReplyDeleteChanging Channels,
ReplyDeleteSwap Meat - While I loved Bobby and Ellen married and a lot of other elements of My Heart Will go
On...I liked more of the humor in Swap Meat,
Hell House - loved Folsom. but for me it's a serious ep with funny elements than a comedy
ep contender,
Ghostfacers - Tough choice for me.
Bad Day At Black Rock - no competition
Monster - Easy choice. Yellow Fever - Dean running, terrified from a teeny dog....
It's a Terrible LIfe - easy pick Frontierland had a chuckle or two but a comedy contender? Not for me.
The big old magnet was my favorite part of Ghostfacers. Well that and the ending credits. The song wasn't bad either.
ReplyDeleteI'm starting to realize that not everyone thinks all the same Supernatural moments or episodes are as funny as me, and it's crazy (but awesome)! Of course this is also the first time I've really talked about episodes in a substantive way; and it's fun! Thank you for doing these polls!
ReplyDeleteThat's one of the best things about Supernatural. It appeals to so many people but for vastly different reasons. That's also the best thing about SpoilerTV because generally people talk about those differences in a civil and often helpful way. I really get a lot more out of Supernatural by being able to talk to other fans about what they see and how things resonated with them. Sometimes others see things I completely miss. I'm so glad you are participating in the discussion. We had a lot of good chat last summer when people were discussing their favorite episodes. I hope to see that again this year because it makes the time go by faster and it is a whole lot more fun.
ReplyDeleteChanging Channels, Bad Day at Black Rock, and the controversial Mystery Spot are my hands-down favorite comedies. I like French Mistake and Tall Tales too but the 3 above get my vote every single time. In fact if I'm having a really bad day and just need to laugh, I put those three in. My favorite episode is What is and What Should Never Be bar none, but for comedy nothing beats making fun of CSI, "I lost my shoe", or bad tacos.
ReplyDeleteI think a lot of these episodes are more serious with comedy sprinkled in than all out comedy, but I think that's why I like Supernatural so much. Most episodes defy categories. The best ones can out humor any comedy, out drama any tearjerker nighttime soap, out mystery any crime procedural, out gross the stupidest reality TV shows, out Awww any Lifetime or Hallmark movie, and out scare any "horror" show - all in 42 minutes. Sometimes I find it hard to even nominate episodes in contests like this because most of them are a fabulous combination of everything.
ReplyDeleteWow there are a lot in here that I wouldn't consider Comedy episodes (Folsom Prison Blues for example). Thanks for continuing the polls Dahne!
ReplyDeleteAgreed on the three comedy favorites! I'd add French Mistake in there too.
ReplyDeleteAnd Mystery Spot is controversial? Interesting...I've never heard anything but praise for it. What is and What Should Never Be is in my Top 5 all time fav's...in rotation for the #1 spot all the time (depending on my mood) with the rest of the top 5. :)
I'm happy to have found a place where people can discuss calmly and intelligently the show, it's refreshing! I personally love it when a new perspective is shown me; there are a lot of very smart people watching this show and they have a lot of great things to say.
ReplyDeleteWhile there are a few people at SpoilerTV who did not like Mystery Spot, I meant controversial as a comedy. Sorry for being unclear. A lot of people think of Mystery Spot as one of the top 10 episodes but they won't vote for it here because to them the drama and heartbreak far outweigh the comedy at the beginning. Personally I consider Mystery Spot a dramedy like most episodes. Dean's deaths are hilarious to me and there are a lot of really good lines so I'm good seeing it as a comedy. However, I completely see the other side too because once it gets to Wednesday there's no laughing to be found.
ReplyDeleteha! Comedy is a broad term in Supernatural. However, I think once we get through the next 2 polls, the choices will more reflect what people think of as a true Supernatural comedy. There were certainly more unique episodes nominated than I figured there would be. I thought it would be the same 12-15 titles. I should have known that nothing is that easy with Supernatural. :-)
ReplyDeleteoh gotcha, :)
ReplyDeleteand yeah, I'd call it a comedy, even with the dramatic turn at the end.
Well, it'll get my vote nonetheless.
There were several episodes listed here that I don't really think of as comedy episodes and there were some episodes listed that I don't really like much.
ReplyDeleteSo this is how I voted....
1. Changing Channels - I laughed most of the way through this episode and I didn't care for After School Special.
2. My Heart Will Go On - I don't really think of it as a comedy but it did have some very funny scenes. Sam and Dean trying to tempt Fate to Blondie's One Way or Another comes to mind. I really disliked Swap Meat.
3. Hell House - The brotherly pranks wins this one even though I really enjoyed Folsom Prison Blues.
4. Season 7, Time a Wedding (by default) I hated Ghostfacers. I know I'm in the minority.
5. Bad Day at Black Rock - I really enjoyed Sam Interrupted but BDaBR seems more true comedy to me and again I laughed most of the way through it.
6. No Vote - Even though both episodes had some very funny lines I don't like either episode on a whole.
7. Yellow Fever (by default) - I can't watch My Bloody Valentine, it's just too gross for me.
8. It's a Terrible Life - Dean Smith & Sam Wesson were very entertaining as first time hunters. I also enjoyed Frontierland, except for the ending.
tough choice and most of the episodes aren't what I consider comedy :(
ReplyDeleteI'm the same--most of my votes were for the underdogs in the poll...
ReplyDeleteFirst poll: This was very easy, I like After School Special (Colin Ford!!) okay, but not enough to for it over Changing Channels! I love Gabriel, and all his episodes, especially this one (though MS is my fave.) My favorite moment is definitely that Herpexia commercial, it makes me laugh every time without fail.
ReplyDeleteSecond Poll: Swap Meat is fairly entertaining, but My Heart Will Go on is better. I love the rock paper scissors and the montage of trying to avoid fate.
Third poll: Folsom Prison Blues. I like Hell House, but c'mon...the boys in those orange jumpsuits! Neither of these I rewatch a lot, but I like FPB more. Although the pranks in Hell House are great. (And the towel scene. You know what I'm talking about.)
Fourth Poll: I've actually only seen Ghostfacers once or twice, hm. But I like Season 7, Time for a Wedding more. I didn't hate the ep, like a lot of people. Not one of my ultimate favorites from season 7 (Slash Fiction and Death's Door, looking at you!) but I did laugh a lot. Sam under the effects of the potion was adorable, even if Becky was a creeper, and I liked the waffle iron. And Crowley! So, yup, Season 7 Time for a Wedding it is.
Fifth Poll: Sam, Interuppted is enjoyable. I really like the beginning, where all they have to do to get admitted is tell the truth. And of course high!Sam is win ("They gave me everything." "Spectacu-lacular." "BOOP!") But Bad Day at Black Rock is funnier. I don't particularly like Bela, but this episode is great. Sam's bad luck (losing his shoe!), Dean being Batman, and more. It gets my vote!
Sixth Poll: Oh, ew. This isn't even a choice at all. The Monster at the End of This Book has Chuck, and I love Chuck. Free to Be You and Me has way too much Castiel and the boys separated and those are both things I HATE. So no way. The Monster at the End of This Book for me.
Seventh Poll: Hmm. These are both fairly good, and not episodes I rewatch regularly. But Castiel is in My Bloody Valentine, and Yellow Fever has, among other things, the Cat Scream, the manning the flashlight line, and more stuff. So Yellow Fever.
Eighth poll: This was pretty easy. Frontierland is good, but I like It's a Terrible Life more! I think a lot of people don't like it, but I don't know why. I've rewatched it several times, and it's always just as good. So I choose It's a Terrible Life.
And those are my votes, with long drawn out explanations. ^^
Wow this is tough!
ReplyDeleteChanging Channels. I still find it incredibly funny even after almost wearing out the dvd. I don't think of After School Special as a comedy episode at all. As I said in the nomination process, I found Dean in the tight little shorts slightly amusing the first time I saw it, but then it just grew more and more irritating because I just know Dean would never, ever wear shorts like that.
My Heart Will Go On. I voted even though once again I don't consider it, or Swap Meat as truly comedic episodes. ! did love the whole 'tempting fate' scene with Blondie playing. There were a few amusing parts in Swap Meat, but no real 'laugh out loud' scenes.
Hell House - purely for the pranks. I'm not a Ghostfacers fan. Once again, Folsom Prison Blues had some amusing scenes but I wouldn't class it as comedy.
Season 7 Time for a Wedding over Ghostfacers. Dean's attempt to 'be supportive' was hilarious.I found myself enjoying it so much more than I expected to.
Bad Day at Black Rock over Sam Interrupted, although as I said before, drugged Sam was funny and this is the e[psidoe that gave us "Pudding!" & "Crazy works". But BDaBR has it all over SI.
TMatEoTB narrowly over FtBYaM purely because my OCD says I have to vote for one of them. I don't see either of them as comedy episodes as such
Having just made that comment about OCD making me vote, I then come the a choice between Yellow Fever & My Bloody Valentine and I really don't want to vote at all. However, I'll go with YF - it comes down to the scene where we get "You know who does that? Crazy people" which is a Supernatural gem I find myself quoting often. Dean's whole speech is amusing - more for the delivery - the actual content is kinda sad to me. Poor Dean.
The last one is the hardest for me - I like both episodes and they both have a good amount of comedy in them. I'm going with Frontierland purely for the sheer joy of watching Dean geek out over being in the old west.
Maybe we should at some time have a poll for the funniest individual scene. Maybe during hellatus? It would take literally weeks to sift through all the classic Supernatural funny moments, and give us lots to laugh at as we remind ourselves of them.
Well, these were easy enough (for the most part):
ReplyDelete-- Poll 1: Changing Channels. No contest there, CC is possibly the best comedic episode Supernatural has ever produced (it's probably between CC and The French Mistake). The TV show parodies, from's "Grey's Anatomy" and the Japanese game show to the Herpexia commercial and Supernatural: The Sitcom, it was hilarious from start to approximately 5 minutes before end. In comparison, After School Special wasn't (IMO) a particularly good episode overall, and it only had mildly comedic elements at best.
--Poll 2: My Heart Will Go On. Again, no contest. MHWGO is an interesting look at what one change in history can do to the world, and it's got some fantastically funny moments in there, the best one being Sam and Dean's walk of terror to Blondie's 'One Way or Another'. In comparison, Swap Meat was mediocre at best (both as an episode and in terms of comedy) with most of the humour coming from Jared Padalecki's superb imitation of a 17 year old in his own body.
--Poll 3: Hell House. This one was easy for a completely different reason. While I consider Folsom Prison Blues to be a far superior episode to Hell House, it just isn't comedic (nor was it meant to be IMO), therefore Hell House won by default.
--Poll 4: Ghostfacers. I actually quite enjoyed this episode. I liked the handheld style of shooting, and I found the Ghostfacers themselves to range from mildly irritating to mildly amusing. Also, it pretty much wins by default here, as Season 7, Time for a Wedding is one of my least favourite Supernatural episodes ever, though I can't really put my finger on why. *coughBECKYcough*
--Poll 5: Bad Day at Black Rock. No contest here either. I actually enjoyed Sam, Interrupted, and I found the boys' 'entrance interview' hilarious, but BDaBR is both funnier and a much better episode overall. "I lost my shoe." Tiny orphan puppies have nothing on Sam Winchester when it comes to pathetic eyes.
--Poll 6: The Monster at the End of this Book. This one for the same reason as Hell House. While Free to Be You and Me is a better episode, it's not comedic (apart from the interlude with Dean and Cas in the brothel, which I assume is the reason it made this list), while TMatEotB is at the very least tongue-in-cheek for the majority of the episode.
--Poll 7: My Bloody Valentine. I knew as I was clicking 'vote' that I was going to be in the minority with this one, and I was right. I just can't get behind Yellow Fever as an episode. I agree that terrified!Dean can be very funny (the incident with the cat and the rant about why you'd be mad to be a hunter stand out as highlights), but the way the ghost was killed (when he was alive) was horrific, and I hated the way people seemed to be making excuses for the killer. Also, I hated the implication that Dean was a bully/dick/etc (I know Kripke says that wasn't the intention, but that's always how it came across to me). In contrast, I loved My Bloody Valentine, and the humour at the start of the episode combined with my dislike of Yellow Fever were enough for me to gladly hand over my vote in this case.
--Poll 8: It's a Terrible Life. I knew I was going to be in the minority for this one as well, but I think IaTL and Frontierland are actually on a par when it comes to comedic elements, and in terms of overall episode quality, I think IaTL is actually better (Frontierland is left down by that anvil of an ending). I'll be honest, even if I wasn't bothered by the end of Frontierland, IaTL would still have edged it, if only because of that amazing opening scene of bizarro!Dean's life set The Kinks' 'Well Respected Man'.
I know I've mentioned this before, but I really am loving these polls! Apart from anything else, they are an excellent procrastination aid (not that I need much help!). :D
1)Changing Channels. It ties with The French Mistake for best comedy so this was incredibly easy.
ReplyDelete2)My Heart Will Go On.It did have a lighter tone than other episodes, but I haven't considered it as comedy until now.Still,it was a great episode even when not compared with Swap Meat.
3)It's been a while since I watched both episodes,so I don't know.I;ll rewatch them and then decide.
4)Season 7,Time for a Wedding. It did make me laugh and generally I don't mind Becky. She was fun the first time we saw her and even though I could have done without seeing her again, she doesn't bother me.I would pick her against the Ghostfacers any day.
5)Bad Day at Black Rock.In the Top 3 of best comedies.Sam,Interrupted was pretty good too,but again, not exactly a comedy. But in this case the nomination makes sense and I can agree with it to some extent, since it had a few scenes that made the episode lighter.
6)The Monster at The End of This Book, because it passes easier as comedy.I liked both episodes, but Free to be You and Me isn't a comedy in my opinion.I agree that the interaction between Dean and Cas was priceless, but personally I need more than a few scenes to think of an episode as comedy.
7)Yellow Fever. If this was a contest about which episode we liked a better the results might have been different. It's not though and I still can't figure out how My Bloody Valentine ended up here.
8)Both episodes are on the verge of comedy for me.Liked them both, but I went with Frontierland.
All in all I think the term "comedy" is pretty vague.I understand some of the nominations, even though I hadn't considered them.Personally,I can't think of an episode as comedy based on a few scenes and even when comedy and drama are balanced in the drama sticks with me more. That's why my definition of comedy is so strict,I think.
Anyway,I'm really enjoying the contest so far.And the new episode is almost here! That was quick! : )
1. Changing Channels
ReplyDelete2. My Heart Will Go On, no thinking about this one, could not stand Swap Meat
3. Hell House, not what I would call a comedy, but loved Sam and his expressions.
4. Time For A Wedding, because I can not stand ANYTHING about the Ghostfacers, they are the biggest turn off in all of SPN for me. And I loved Dean and the many expressions he got at the church on seeing Becky.
5. Bad Day at Black Rock
6. Free To Be You and Me, just for Cas.
7. Yellow Fever, I loved this ep, Dean was so funny afraid of everything, the bad dog, cat in locker and we had the awesome Eye of the Tiger.
8. It's A Terrible Life, Dean eating healthy and all buttoned down, fun.
I am loving these polls, keeps me out of the bars. lol Would it be a lot of extra time to add season number after the ep? Would make it faster to go back to watch or check my note book that I made when I first watched the series. Thanks again for making my withdrawal a more fun time.
Ha, for me Burn Notice went downhill when they added Jesse, he broke up the chemistry between the characters and I have not really enjoyed it since. But I liked S6 of SPN and 7 has been very good.
ReplyDelete1. Changing Channels - obvious choice as I really don't know what was funny about After School Special
ReplyDelete2. My Heart Will Go On - because I didn't like Swap Meat and some scenes in MHWGO were really hilarious. My fav is the "six seconds" scene.
3. Folsom Prison Blues - because I hate Ghostfacers
4. Season 7, Time for a Wedding - same reason
5. Bad Day at Black Rock - my favourite comedy episode, so easy choice.
6. Now this one was the hardest for me. I enjoyed the comedy in both episodes. Loved the meta jokes in TMatEotB and loved Cas in FtBYaM. But I went with the former, because the laundry scene is just unbeatable xD
7. Yellow Fever - simply because it's much more of a comedy episode than My Bloody Valentine.
8. It's a Terrible Life - I just can't get into Frontierland. The episode was a disappointment for me.
I'm still bitter Swap Meat wasn't about Sam and Dean switching bodies. I chose mostly the earliest comedy episodes.
ReplyDeleteI was okay with Jesse (although he is much better this season) and thought the season finale last year was one of the best Burn Notice episodes ever. However, the CIA theme this year was boring, I don't care for Anson as the big bad, and the team spent too much time apart. I'm hoping next year Burn Notice will get back to the show I love. During Supernatural season 5, Burn Notice was almost my favorite show so I know it can be amazing.
ReplyDeleteAdded the seasons and will put them on all future polls. Thanks for the suggestion.
ReplyDelete!. Changing Channels. I skip After School Special when I do my marathons. Dean was portrayed like Sylvester Stallone as Rocky. That was the worst portrayal on the show I have ever seen. It wasn't as much Brocks's fault as the people on the show. I believe he was given two episodes to watch. To be honest, the episode was not a comedy.
ReplyDelete2. Swap Meat. I really don't like the episode, but even though there was some great comedy in My Heart Will Go On, I cried through parts of it.
3. Hell House. I am not a big fan of Ghost Facers but the look on Dean's face, and the look on Sam's and Sam's laugh when he said I did was perfection.
4. Season 7, Time for a Wedding. It really its moments. I just don't like the Ghost Facers, and there were no great moments of comedy to me.
5. Bad Day at Black Rock is one of my favorite comedic episodes. Jared was great in th is one I loved I lost my shoe. Dean's I'm Batman. Everything part of it had great comedy.
6. Monster at the End of This Book had some wonderful moments of comedy. I especially loved the scene in the laundromat and when they reading the books and discovering the fandom. I also enjoyed all of the prophecies coming true no matter how hard Dean tried to prevent them.
7. Yellow Fever is the funniest episode ever done on the show. Every part of it was hysterical. Jensen can do comedy.
8. It's a Terrible Life. I hated to even vote on this one. I loved both episodes.
I am still watching BN, but just has not been the same and I hate that I am not enjoying it any longer, although the last 2 eps were the best in a couple of years, for me at least. So I will hold out hope.
ReplyDeleteTHANK YOU so much. Has anyone told you how AWESOME you are, lately. How do you have time for all this?
ReplyDeleteits so hard to pick when most of these are my faves and all have me dying of laughter every time I watch. I went with:
ReplyDeleteChanging Channels (the best episode of the 5th season)
My Heart Will Go On (so awesome!)
Folsom Prison Blues (making orange jumpsuits look sexy)
Ghostfacers (they need to bring them back!)
Bad Day at Black Rock (I LOST MY SHOE!)
The Monster At the End of this Book (Chuck!)
Yellow Fever (I will forever have the image of Jensen rocking out to Eye of the Tiger in my head <3)
Frontierland (sexy guys dressed as cowboys <3)
I'm actually pretty amazed that "I lost my shoe" appears to be most fans' favourite moment from BDaBR. I agree Sam looked beyond adorable in it, but I very much prefer other moments, like "I'm batman", the immortal "son of a bitch", Dean's face when the boys win free food, his voiceless "awesome" when Sam picks up than golden watch, Sam knocking himself out at the motel... I could go on. "I lost my shoe" is only one of many, many great comedy moments and yet it's the first thing to point out for many fans. Not saying it's bad, just interesting for me ;)
ReplyDeleteIt all depends on Fiona's fate for me because she's my favorite character of all. If we go into the premiere Fi-less I will not be pleased even if it's all about Michael trying to get her out.
ReplyDeleteI can see My Heart Will Go On as comedy more than many of them because it has more than one funny scene. But the thing that makes it such a great episode are the Ellen and Bobby moments and for the most part those were heartbreaking not funny. I', not sure you are in the minority about Ghostfacers here. There seems to be a lot of people who can't stand them. Should be interesting to see what happens when they go up against themselves in Hell House. I'm predicting a Hell House win but in all honesty, it may end up the least voted on poll.
ReplyDeleteHA! We like drawn out explanations. When I first saw Changing Channels I was still using my DVD recorder and trying to cut out the commercials as I went. I almost cut out the Herpexia ad because I was really thinking it was a commercial until I saw Sam. Then I forgot to cut out the commercials that did come after it because I was laughing so hard. It was sheer genius!
ReplyDeleteGreat idea for a future poll. We may have to nominate in season shifts though. I don't think I would be able to to take almost 150 episodes and pick just 5 favorite comedy episodes. I'm having the same trouble trying to figure out how to do the favorite line nominations because seriously there are great lines in every episode. Even going by season, I can't nominate just 5.
ReplyDeleteHa! I'm not getting much done on the to-do list myself. I completely agree with your analysis of both Changing Channels (the best season 5 episode for me) and Yellow Fever (a terrible excuse fro a comedy). And boy was Frontierland smashed by its own ending. Ugh! I think I'm going to watch It's a Terrible Life today, mostly because these contests are making me nostalgic for it.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely the positives to a short hiatus. It seems like Death's Door just ended. Of course I also saw it a couple of days after everyone else and have had company off and on for a month so that might be it too. As for comedy, I think at this point it is definitely broad, but after the next round or two I would expect only those MOST agree as comedies will last. Next round we will have lots of "how is this a comedy" comments but most of those episodes will lose in the first poll.
ReplyDeleteThanks! I am on vacation right now and have thus been avoiding every single thing on my to-do list thanks to this site. :-) Kids are coming back to school soon though so it's probably a good thing the hiatus is coming to a close. I'll have far less time to play after tomorrow.
ReplyDeleteMy friend, you are going to have a terrible time when Hell House goes up against Ghostfacers next time around. I guess the good news is that one of them will definitely be knocked out of the contest.
ReplyDeleteI find After School Special to be complete character assassination too. Of course I also blame the writers (Dabb and Loflin again). The reason I will end up voting for Hell House (and not just because I hate Ghostfacers) is because it is one of the few times in the entire show that the brothers laugh together, and not in a bitter way. It was good to see them have some fun in the midst of all the heroics. I wish we could have that back.
ReplyDeleteI think it is because the "I lost my shoe" moment is only funny because of both brothers. Sam's "pitiful me" voice combined with Dean's exasperated look make it a truly brotherific comedy moment. "I'm Batman" is funny even without Sam's reaction although that does heighten it. I agree that Sam knocking himself out is hilarious but Dean isn't in the scene. The only other real funny brother moment you mention is the golden watch scene but in all the other greatness, I never even remember that part. So for me, "I lost my shoe" encapsulates the humor but also how much I loved the brothers being brothers in this episode. So that's the moment I cherish most.
ReplyDeleteWe almost voted the same. Almost.
ReplyDeleteChanging Channels - Not a great episode but it's funnier than the competition by far.
ReplyDeleteMy Heart Will Go On - Swap Meat was terrible. This episode was not.
Folsom Prison Blues - I will never vote for anything with a Ghostfacer in it.
Season 7, Time For A Wedding - See FPB comment above.
Bad Day At Black Rock - Decent match-up this time. Bad Day was better though.
Free To Be You And Me - Cas is the worst hunting partner ever and it's funny to watch.
Yellow Fever - I dislike both YF & MBV. However, I hate Yellow Fever less.
Frontierland - There's nothing funny about It's a Terrible Life.
I haven't seen S4+. So while I know Jesse joins the team, I haven't yet seen his introduction and assimilation into the show.
ReplyDeleteI was so hoping that Jesse would be killed off, I want Sam, Fi & Michael back.
ReplyDeleteI for one am going to miss all this fun and games.
ReplyDeleteI would be interested in what you think of it. I have a friend that hates Jesse even more than I do. She said it is like they are just reading from a script without emotion and she used to LOVE BN. To me Chemistry is just GONE.
ReplyDeleteWow! That's new. I guess there aren't many time-altering, universe-altering episodes for us to disagree on.
ReplyDeleteAgreed that the Bad Day at Black Rock and Sam, Interrupted match is the best of them all. I can at least see how both could be considered a comedy although Bad Day definitely matches the parameters of a tradition comedy more. I am sorry that Sam, Interrupted ranked here because I would far rather vote for it than most of the episodes today.
ReplyDeleteBy the way, we are both going to be screwed if Hell House beats FPB. That makes it pre-Ghostfacers vs Ghostfacers in the second stage of voting.
I'm a little surprised. I haven't heard/read a lot of backlash about the addition. Mostly indifference.
ReplyDeleteUnless you count "It's A Terrible Life." Except for Supernatural's excellent use of The Kinks' "A Well Respected Man," I could do without the episode.
ReplyDeleteI found that someone took the song and expanded it into a full montage:

Agreed. If that scenario comes to pass, I'm going to have to grit my teeth in order to vote in that poll at all.
ReplyDeletegod, you made me want to rewatch the episode so much right now. i'm batman is also my fave part although i loved every moment
ReplyDeletechanging channels - one, its amazing and hilarious. two, i don't see how after wchool special is a comedy
ReplyDeletemy heart will go on - i didnt really think either were comedies but i dont like swap meat
hell house - i always found this one funny with all the pranks the brothers pulled on each other.
ghostfacers - i loved this one too. and i didnt really find season 7, time for a wedding funny
monster at the end of this book - them discovering the books and all that came along was brilliant. and i didnt remeber anything that was funny in free to be you and me until i read comments after i vted. cas trying to be fbi was hilarious
yellow fever - again, one of my favourite cmedy episodes. dean does it all so well. and i dont know whats funny in my bloody valentine. except maybe when cas keeps eati ng meat
frontierland - i wasnt sure about either of these actually but deans childish giddyness about the wild west was what gave frontierland my vote. i find no funny in its a terrible life
also, why does everyone hate the ghostfacers so much? i find them funny. i really wanna know what it is
i will too, they have kept me sane these past few weeks
ReplyDeleteomg, fave line. i have no idea now on earth i could choose five. but sounds like fun :-)
ReplyDeleteThanks for the video. I shouldn't be surprised that a Supernatural fan extended it. Love that about this fandom.
ReplyDeletehaha yeah, all this talk makes me wanna rewatch it again too :) I adore Bad Day at Black Rock, I believe it's among my top 5 of the series (although never really tried to ultimately define those) and among my 3 most watched episodes. I really hope it wins the comedy competition.
ReplyDeleteyeah, you might have a point here. Although I do believe Sam's reaction to "I'm Batman" is half of the fun, especially with his bloody nose and all.
ReplyDeleteyeah, always look at the bright side of things ;) gonna have to think what will be better: to vote for Hell House, which is the lesser of two evils or to simply skip the poll (being unable to vote for any).
ReplyDeleteI'm confused about what's considered comedy I guess. Free to be You and Me? Because of Cas in a brothel? Whatever. All of them had one clear answer to me.
ReplyDeleteIt will have a hard time taking Changing Channels but it's a hands-on favorite so my bet is it gets to the final 4 with no problem. My bet is that the final 4 is Changing Channels, Bad Day at Black Rock, French Mistake, and Mystery Spot. There may be some surprises but I think Mystery Spot can take Tall Tales and I'm betting Bad Day at Black Rock schools Yellow Fever unmercifully.
ReplyDeleteChanging Channels - easy choice
ReplyDeleteMy Heart Will Go On - nothing against Swap Meat but I prefer MHWGO
Hell House - Folsom Prison Blues is great but love the pranking in Hell House
Season 7, Time for a Wedding - I don't mind Ghostfacers but voted for Garth
Bad Day at Black Rock - Sam, Interrupted is funny especially the opening scene but Bad Day is just hilarious
The Monster at the End of this Book - Free to be You and Me had some funny moments but I found Monster to be more of a comedic ep
Yellow Fever - another easy choice
It's a Terrible Life - these two were pretty much even so I just picked one
In the first round, comedy is a broad term. Mostly we needed either 16 or 32 episodes to make a bracket and since there were too many nominated episodes to stop at 16, some of these episodes are more filler to make the numbers than real contenders for the crown. When we get to round 3 especially, I think you will find the nominees match more closely to a traditional comedy episode. Except for apparently the Hell House vs Folsom Prison Blues poll, most of these are no-brainers for people. I find it interesting though that My Heart Will Go On is dominating Swap Meat. SM definitely got more nominations than MHWGO did.
ReplyDeleteI find the Ghostfacers really really annoying. In fact, I was one of the few who thoroughly disliked them in Hell House so when I heard they were coming back in season 3 I was irked. As for Ghostfacers itself, I hate the handheld camera and fauz interview phenomenon in TV. It's the reason why the Office makes me cringe. I'm also not a fan of ghost hunting shows at all. And although I know a lot of people loved it, I hated that they had Dean and Sam cursing even if it was bleeped out. For me that makes them cursing canon and in the atmosphere of the series, it makes absolutely no sense. If they would curse on a TV show, why wouldn't they in normal life? I mean if we are supposed to think of this as two real brothers on adventures, they would have no need to self-censor themselves and so the cursing actually takes me out of the context of the show. A small thing but it really, really bugs me.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the explanation. That makes sense. My two cents on My Heart Will Go On--the scene with Sam and Dean walking through all of the death traps was fall on the floor funny to me, plus all of Balthazar's quips. The only funny scenes to me in Swap Meat were the opening scene and when Sam/Gary is analyzing himself in the mirror. To each his own with what's considered funny!
ReplyDeleteThanks for posting the link, fun video.
ReplyDeleteI guess I find it confusing to because they do have so many pure comedic eps that I just can't call a dramatic ep with funny scenes a comedy. Course with a pure yes or no vote I can force myself to pick...but...I think this is one of my purest things. :-D
ReplyDeleteI just love that part, it's so funny. The best part of the episode, if you ask me, though it was all hilarious. I love Gabriel.
