-Ratings Breakdown:
It was an easy Thursday overnight victory for CBS, which bested No. 2 ABC by a hefty 70 percent with a first-place finish in each of the six half-hours. Third overall was Fox, followed by NBC and The CW, which continues to benefit from The Vampire Diaries.
In series-premiere news, sitcom Rob! opened on CBS with a very solid (and dominant) 8.3 rating/13 share in the overnights at 8:30 p.m. Comparably, this outdelivered the debut of short-lived fall occupant How To Be a Gentleman (5.5/ 9 on 9/29/11) by 51 percent, with retention out of The Big Bang Theory (10.3/16 at 8 p.m. – No.1 for the evening) of 81 percent. Consider this a winning start for Rob!
With stronger lead-in support, lead-out Person of Interest rose to a series-high 9.4/14 in the overnights from 9-10 p.m., followed by The Mentalist at a dominant 8.8/15 at 10 p.m.
In the second series-debut of the evening, Bones spin-off The Finder on Fox disappointed at a third-place 3.8/ 6 in the overnights at 9 p.m. Comparably, former time period occupant Bones opened its season with a 6.6/10 in the time period on 11/3/11, which was a loss of 42 percent. Retention out of Bones at 8 p.m. (#3. 5.9/10), meanwhile, was just 64 percent for The Finder. The biggest challenge for The Finder, no doubt, might be finding an audience.
In season-premiere news, sitcom 30 Rock returned to NBC with a fourth-place 3.6/ 6 in the overnights at 8 p.m., which was 29 percent above opening levels for former occupant Community on 9/22/11 (2.8/ 5). Parks and Recreation was next with a 3.2/ 5 at 8:30 p.m. (#4), followed by demo friendly The Office (#3: 4.1/ 6) and relocated Up All Night (#4: 3.0/ 5) from 9-10 p.m. Comparably, Up All Night was 40 percent below the debut of former time period occupant Whitney (5.0/ 8 on 9/23/11), with retention out of The Office of 73 percent.
In time period-premiere news, drama The Firm on NBC finished a distant third at 10 p.m. with a 2.9/ 5. Former failed occupant Prime Suspect debuted in this hour with a 4.6/ 8 on 9/22/11. Needless to say, NBC may want to rethink that 22-episode order.
Elsewhere, ABC had nothing unusual to report with its combination of Wipeout (#3: 4.1/ 6), Grey’s Anatomy (#2: 7.3/11) and Private Practice (#2: 4.9/ 8). And The CW capped off the evening with its top-rated series, The Vampire Diaries (#5: 2.4/ 4) and freshman drama The Secret Circle (#5: 1.6/ 2), which dipped by 33 percent. Year-to-year, aging Grey’s Anatomy slipped by 21 percent.

huh, I guess that Marc Berman is thrilled with the return of 30 Rock in Community's time slot...
ReplyDeleteThanks for the ratings though :)
Wow i can't believe Rob did so well.I had to turn it off,it was so bad. Thanks!
ReplyDeletePoI go high :)
ReplyDeleteWow! Impressive ratings for Person of Interest .. better than Number Crunch did.. yeah baby <3333
ReplyDeleteWelcome to the world of many of the sitcoms CBS produces are crap and yet everyone ever continues to watch.
ReplyDeleteFinder got a 1.7 for premiere its dead now can we get touch early?
ReplyDeleteBut this year it seems to be a bumper crop of bad sitcoms,i think i OD on them while i was growing up. Yeah crap it right!
ReplyDeleteROB scores a 4.1 good news or the next *SHIT*
ReplyDeleteThe Finder's 1.7 , Bones only scored a 2.4 at 8pm, they would have been better airing the new show behind Idol next week.
Season high for POI
Am I evil for not minding the Finder's bad numbers? I am taking anything that can help Fringe.
ReplyDeleteLol, that depends on whether or not it's a good show . If it lacks quality, then by all means, be evil. If it's something like The Chicago Code getting cancelled, then yes, you're a bad person :P.
ReplyDeleteOh,Finder....Now I don't know, if I wanna watch it,because with these numbers, it will get cancelled pretty soon.....The Firm is a complete fail for NBC, Person of Interest is just WOAHH.But give me back Community, let UAN go!!!!And Rob, another shitcom from CBS,that people gonna watch...And really good shows like Chuck and Fringe is cancelled.People of the USA!Let's watch good TV,and save brilliant shows for the rest of the world.Thanks.
ReplyDeleteSeries High for POI? Nice! :D
ReplyDeleteYep, series High :)
ReplyDeleteToo bad for The Firm, it's actually way better than 90% of the 'programs' aired on network TV now
ReplyDeletegood for POI!
ReplyDeleteGah Rob, why?!??!
ReplyDeleteWohooo! for the Mentalist
ReplyDeleteCan't believe Rob. I mean, I can. CBS and all. But still. Come on. Rob isn't bad when he's a supporting guy, but he can't carry anything. Though, you know, Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo is kinda funny sometimes. I think I spelled that wrong. idk.
ReplyDeleteI actually have no idea about that. Never saw a second of it but I did not hear good things yet either. And if people were not interested even in the pilot that is never a good sign...
ReplyDeleteFringe is not cancelled, okay?
ReplyDeleteI know, but sadly its a very possible option.I wish it not to be true, and i'm a huge fan of fringe, its easily in my top 3.I wish they give us a 13th episode 5th and final season, but thats the best scenario. So prepare for the worst, and it wont hurt that bad.
ReplyDeleteI think it's still too soon to tell. Last year I was not positive at all and looked how it turned out. Now I am thinking I will try to not stress myself with it until I really have to...
ReplyDeleteI feel the same about 2 Broke Girls.. I have no idea how it's still on the air.
ReplyDeleteI hear ya,so far we have 2 Broke Girls,Rob,Work It, feel free to continue if you feel the need! :)
ReplyDeleteI can only assume it's because Rob aired between the 2 best shows on Thursday night, The Big Bang theory and Person of Interest.
ReplyDeleteTimeslot and a premiere can add up to huge pilot ratings.... but will it keep them next week? I'd be surprised, although I missed Rob..... On purpose. XD
Cancel the Finder and Terra Nova (even though I think it will be renewed now against all logic), air Touch and Alcatraz so we can judge them for what they are and then renew Fringe!
ReplyDeleteHuzzah!
I'm one of those that prefers CBS sitcoms to every other networks, but I still did not check out Rob since I have never found him funny.
ReplyDeleteLol hence the *many* as opposed to all. I still enjoy Big Bang and How I Met Your Mother. That was more in reference to everything else. I enjoy 2 Broke Girls, but the kind of drama that went down at the TCAs is indicative of the kind of unfortunate things that can happen when trying to appeal too broadly, or in letting CBS' success go to its head.
ReplyDeleteIn all things, CBS makes the most traditional of shows. That doesn't have to mean bad... Just, generic. Why take risks when risks aren't necessary? I know you hate the NBC comedy block, but I'm sure you can recognise it as the most innovative of the sitcoms on air, although ABC is doing a great job too. Then again, Modern Family S1 was great... Now, after Emmy recognition, it's a little too broad and hokey. And also then again, Whitney exists on NBC :S.
I guess I can understand how you feel since it's similar to how I feel about classical music. I love me some good old Bach, Beethoven, and Brahms but I cannot deal with Debussy, Mahler, or Schonberg. I appreciate their... Artistic message? And sense of progress? But it's mostly just noise to me. Sent on the TELUS Mobility network with BlackBerry
Yeah and its CBS which people seem to love to watch
ReplyDeleteHow could you miss such an amazing show ;)
Ya it's an odd thing for me. I am non-traditional in so many aspects of my life, but I do not find innovation as a positive thing just because it is different.
ReplyDeleteMuch like American Horror Story. I thought its innovation was all overdone style more than worthwhile style. I'm glad there are different types of comedies (or dramas for that matter) for different types of people. I like what I like and let others like what they do I guess.
I think "safe" is used as a derogatory term in TV for many people I think it is neutral. I do not see the need to change something that works just for the point of change. I respect new and improved if it is actually an improvement, but being new on its own is not an improvement for me. Risks can lead to greatness, or to failure. Risks are neither great successes nor failures on their own though so I do not applaud the risks themselves... only success - be it traditional or not.
As for NBC shows. I do not get them whatsoever. Maybe since I have not liked SNL for 25 years or so, but none of the SNL actors are funny to me.
I can respect an artists abilities without enjoying them. In music at least. I can hear a performer and recognize the talent even if I do not enjoy it. In comedy I do not recognize the talent so much honestly. It's harder for me to see outside of my oen personal tastes like I can with dramas, art, music etc. Comedy is much more personal I guess.
Speaking of music though... Have you checked out Zoe Keating or Jorane yet? I know I mentioned them to you months ago (years?) and I am listening to Zoe now so it popped in my mind...
Yeah absolutely, there has to be a distinction between progress that matters and stuff that's over the top. I mean, I guess it's still pretty subjective, but Ryan Murphy is a good example of a bubble pusher who isn't so much pushing things towards their natural progression (or reflecting current popular culture in his art) as he is taking a hammer and smashing all of the bubbles he can find while screaming LOVE ME AND MY ART, LOVVVEEE MEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!11!1!11!one
ReplyDeleteSo yeah, as you put it, I don't celebrate risks themselves because sometimes a risk isn't so much risky as it is stupid. It's interesting, that's actually one major evolutionary theory for why men do more risky/thrill-seeking/stupid things than women do. Mother Nature can't mess with women too much because they need to be able to have babies that don't die. If a man takes risks and isn't successful at procreation, whatever, another man will come along who took more successful risks.
ANYWAY, that being said, I'm definitely someone who thinks that innovation is a positive thing. Humour gets old as the same ground is tread over and over. The setup-punchline tradition that extends throughout all comedies with laugh tracks makes innovating tough. The characters can change and the jokes can reflect current worldviews, but the model is the model. Certainly, the model can be messed with (as is most apparent in How I Met Your Mother with its future narration, sprawling mythology, and cutaway gags), but it largely stands unaltered.
I need new and creative ways to keep me laughing. Family Guy Season 1 made me laugh when it first aired because it was so shocking. Now? It's less funny. Because I have seen so much humour in that vein. There are lots of different reasons to laugh. To relieve tension, to alienate or unite groups, or because something is not as it should be. I'm more inclined to go for the latter (incongruity), but that means I need to be less surprised about things. I can see traditional sitcoms working very hard at relief of tension and succeeding.
Sitcoms aside, CBS is hardly the place to go for the best drama. Besides perhaps The Good Wife, it is THE home of the standard episodic procedural. Something that I enjoy, but am not hooked on. It's good, sometimes great, but rarely exceptional. CBS gets some of the highest ratings, so it does not need to try as hard to find innovative ways to tell stories. It sticks with its model. The other networks have to work harder at breaking the mold in order to try and reach an audience. So they do it more often. FOX brought us S1 of Glee, Fringe, Whedon stuff, Terminator, etc. ABC brought us LOST, Desperate Housewives, Grey's, OUAT, etc. NBC brought us Friends, Seinfeld, and all the stuff you currently don't like :P.
Finally, all those awesome cable dramas we love so much? Bubble pushers.
Also, I have not checked them out. I don't actually remember the mentioning of them. It probably happened years ago :P. I'll go do that now.
Ha! XD LOVE ME!! LOVE MY ART!!! XD
ReplyDeleteThat is so Ryan Murphy in a nutshell!
When it comes to comedy I'm a trained monkey I think. XD I can laugh at the same thing over and over. Arrested Development told the same 10 jokes over and over for 3 years and I laughed harder at the end than when it started! those were not even different jokes... the same ones over and over! XD
I Don't mind CBS' formula, but you're right it does not make for anything groundbreaking. I really like Blue Bloods for instance, but CBS thought the very thin serialized aspect was too serialized and now it's a straight up procedural ala everything else on CBS. I still like it because of the high quality writing and acting, but it does not evoke any passion from me.
I still would rather watch the CBS formula drama than the ABC formula which is way too shipper friendly for me. OR the FOX formula which is way too gimmicky for me. Seemingly NBC's only formula is failure... so l will ignore that. XD
Keating and Jorane are both Avant-cellists from Quebec if I recall. I know you like cello s much as me so thought you may enjoy....
Thanks!!
ReplyDeleteThanks! :)
