Okay, first off the pilot was very interesting. It's nice to see something new and there are not a lot of shows based around autistic or mute kids.
It was actually beautiful the way everything fit together too... but.... Wow that was contrived!
IF this was the entire season and all the pieces fit together in a finale episode I could accept it more, but every week? I'm not sure that can continue and keep my suspension of disbelief active. At some point by episode 3 or 4 I'm going to get really tired of thinks just magically fitting together.
I get that it is about how everything is connected, but guess what.... everything is NOT connected. Only certain random events or people. If every week we see only these isolated and random people that happen to fit together in a neat 42-minute episode it would be just pathetic and too much for my suspension of disbelief!
Again, if this was a serial and all the events fit together at the end of the season... AWESOME! Everything fitting together in a single episode? Not so awesome.
Okay, so other than the entire premise of the series I have an issue with Jack Bauer not acting like Jack Bauer! Did the Chinese brainwash him or why isn't he kicking ass.... especially kicking The Man-in-Black's ass? Don;t let him off Manhattan Island Jack or the world is doomed!
MUST STOP THE BUS!
Supremely awesome guest stars and Losties aside, I quite liked the acting so I voted "Great". My initial feeling is that this would have made an awesome mini-series or 2-hour movie, but as a non-serialized show it will get really old, really fast!
Is there ANY show that Titus Welliver isn't on? I liked how the different storylines all built at a nice pace. I'm still confused about what's happening with the oven. And when Kiefer got punched in the belly at the gas station I was expecting, for a split second, he was going to Bauer his ass. Disappointed that series doesn't start until March but I'll definitely be waiting for it.
I think the show will move along in story arcs. At least that's what I gathered from the next preview. But I'm still confused by the oven thing. And that damn cell phone made it halfway around the world on one battery charge!!
Well I think one of the terrorists said he cleaned the phones and charged them (something like that), but that was still a very long journey around the world to that point! Especially considering they were playing video and draining that video all around the globe!
The oven thing I think I understood though.. The father of the girl that died last year was a restaurant supply salesman. When he got his phone back from the not-wanna-be-bomber he gave the kid's family a new oven. That was the deal the customer service representative promised the boy anyway....
My bigger question was, how long does that kid stay alive after reneging on terrorists? I bet they use the new oven as an IED and the entire family is dead within the week!
I enjoyed it quite a bit. In a way I kept thinking about the pilot of "Heroes" and the similarities between several characters who were thinking that they were meant for greater things than where they were/are. (plus I caught how the Japanese escort had a friend named "Ando" -who was Masi Oka's character's sidekick). I did like the international flavor that they attempted with the native tongues and subtitles. There were holes, sure: like how the Iraqi kid's transition to speaking english was very smooth and unbroken and of course he stopped the timer with 1 second to spare, and he'd have to expect some retribution from the terrorists unless he reported them.... All in all a great start, but I am curious on how all this can be carried over a season and beyond, but I'll be tuning in for now.
My nephew, who is 21 now is autistic so I could really relate to how Martin just wanted to have some kind of communication with his son. The joy on his face when he thought his son was hugging him was so beautiful but the pain when he realized he was reaching for his phone was heartbreaking. Interesting show...kind of like Touched By An Angel without the angels. kinda sappy but still really moving.
Heroes went for the people who searched each other the entire season and finally came together in the finale. (For the record, I found following three seasons to be quite fun, so no issues with Kring and Heroes). As for this concept, you say things are not really connected. But, that is what they say in the show. Only few people can see that. For example, a lot of things had to happen so that the fireman could save the bus (and don't underestimate the message he left). By itself, he wasn't supposed to save the bus, but Martin did something that set off a different chain of events, following up on his son's drawings. In the end, I didn't see too much contrivance for my belief-suspending skills. Now, it seems to me he will do that for some time, first few episodes or so, at least in order for the show to explain how things work, and than they will kick it into some grand-scale thing. If that happens, the show will be put to a test - can it show how things fit together on a large scale, high-impact event (don't mention 'The Event')? On the other hand, perhaps season finale will just have higher stakes than other episode cases. I have had the same dilemma about POI - what direction will it take, and I see that it's not for nothing. There are parallels. The kid is like a machine, he draws some numbers, and Martin, like Reese and Finch combined in one person, tries to make sense of it and prevent something/help something happen. Since Touch will have 12, 13 episodes, my guess is Kring will go for something big, but will see. For now, great job by him, and several very moving scenes tonight (On the tower - predictably, but also, the cemetary, answering machine, when salesman sees his daughter on a big screen in Japan).
I enjoyed it, confusing at times, but I kept the faith that it would come together in the end and was not disappointed. Jake (David Mazouz) was very good, but when Martin was punched in the belly, my only thought was where is Jack when we need him. I'm just glad to see something that requires a few brain cells to keep up with the story.
I saw a lot of similarities to Heroes as well, mostly the whole strangers from all around the world being connected thing and then I read it was written by Tim Kring and went "Oh well that explains it."
As for the holes, yeah it did seem a bit weird that he could talk English all of a sudden. I think, while it wasn't shown, the terrorists wouldn't have come looking for him or if they did they would have realised he saved the life of one of their daughters (the girl with the apple he looks at is the one from the bakery.)
Touch is 24 meets the movie "Crash" meets and they throw a party that involves suspense, six degrees of separation, intelligence and compassion. I literally am counting down the days till this comes back! Touch legitimately is one of those shows that justifies television. haha....way too excited!
I believe the premise, people are connected on this level, obviously without the drama and the autistic boy who can see the consistency in the patterns of the universe and translate them into numbers. Very promising pilot
as for the comments about heroes I caught a couple of references :)
I liked it for the same reasons you mention. My sister has worked with Autistic and other special needs kids and young adults (some not so young I guess) for a decade or two now and as you get to know the families, you so often can see and feel those same things Martin Bohm felt and wanted for his son.It was a little overdone or sappy, but beautiful and powerful nonetheless! I'm not sure how it will play over a season or more just yet however.....The producers have said a couple of times that Jake is not autistic so I will be interested to see how they play out whatever his condition is. At times I saw a lot of autism-like traits in Jake, but if the producers say it is something else... Well, I guess it must be. *shrug*
Titus Welliver needs to be in the guest star hall of fame, he has been everywhere lately, can we please get that man something else besides The Good Wife? I loved him in SOA. But he will always be War from SPN to me.
I actually liked 3 of the 4 Heroes seasons too (at least on some level), but I think it could have been so much better if the show had a been handled differently.
Oh I think all the people in the pilot were connected to each other in seemingly random ways... I just do not think EVERYONE is connected to EVERYONE else on any meaningful way. I would like the show more if Kring does in did have some larger overarching plot! I think the show needs it, at least for me to keep watching. I have read in multiple articles though that will not be any real serial aspect... Maybe there is a bigger story that will come, but they say the show is not a serial to get the most viewers possibel at the start of the season? Maybe the inter-connectivity concept does nto play well with me? MAybe I just find it too odd that the social worker seemed to have only one case in an occupation that is notoriously overstretched.... If they tone down the sentimentality in the seubsequent episodes I will probably like it more. I just felt force fed the emotions. Even in the scenes that were truly touching or beautiful something felt overdone to me I guess. For a movie I would have accepted it easily, but on a week-to-week basis I'm not sureI will be able to.I do p;an to keep watching for at least 3 or 4 episodes and see how the series shapes up.
I do the same thing and am seeing Lucifer, MARK PELLEGRINO, everywhere recently. Also have caught Alastair, Christopher Heyerdahl on Hell On Wheels. I love finding my SPN gang on other shows.
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.
Still waiting on this one for my time zone but I'm really hoping this one is good!
ReplyDeleteDangit...Just got home...apparently I forgot to record this. :(
ReplyDeleteI thought it was interesting and had a good time watching it, I'm not sure what to make of it yet, I'll just have to wait and see.
ReplyDeleteThis pilot leaves me quite conflicted!

It was something different and really liked it. I tried to look past Kiefer as Jack Bower until he said, "DAMNIT!!".

ReplyDeleteKringe failed with telling a season story arc on Heroes so maybe if he can't do this then it's good.

ReplyDeleteI think I'll go rewatch some Heroes before 3.19
download it

ReplyDeleteHey Wilson! They are showing the pilot again online, just head on over to Fox!

100% agree!
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed the pilot! I was actually quite surprised. Titus Welliver is always awesome! Hopefully they can keep it interesting.

ReplyDeleteReally enjoyed it, unfortunately the worst aspect was Keiffer Sutherland.
