Me too. I've always suspected because Regina is just too obvious a villain. She wants to be happy and hurt anyone to get it but we have no idea about why Gold does what he does and that makes him dangerous.
Man I felt bad for rumple I never thought his background would be like this. In other words I have the sympathy for the devil. Also I like how henry says, “Mr. Gold!? He’s already worse then she is!” it’s a little foreshadow maybe? They definitely up the stakes for rumple/gold/caryle and im glad I always thought rumple was worse then the queen. The queen is kind’ve like the lex luthor for once upon a time and I think rumple is like the zod, brainiac, darkseid, etc. he’s more powerful and a bigger threat considering he owns the town basically and owns a lot of people with deals. His rumple half to is as big of a threat. I liked rumple’s backstory, I like how emma won sheriff and the shows doing good. I also want to say Robert caryle u did a extraordinary job with your performance it was totally awesome especially as the background story rumple. I felt so much guilt for no reason because of that performance and its Robert and his characters that are my want to see mostly in this show. Keep it up Robert ur doing great.
also next weeks doesnt look as good to me i was never a big fan of hansel and gretel. Also one last thing that dagger that's rumples, it can control him and kill him and i bet its going to return. I have no idea where it is in storybrooke (probably his pawn shop lol) but i bet thats going to be the key to emma defeating him. Only killing him will turn her or anyone else into the dark one.
Loved Rumples origin story, and wondered what became of his son. Perhaps that is a story for another ep an perhaps that might be a clue to his vulnerability. Loved that Gold was pulling the strings the whole time and can't wait to see what "favor" he will seek from Emma.
I really loved it. Loved the guest casting (with the exception of the kid playing Rumplestiltskin's son...he was so marginal that, during the scene when they were discussing the plan to get into the castle, I was convinced he was setting his father up. Loved loved loved how Rumplestiltskin got his power. Have loved Brad Dourif's work for a really long time. But with every episode it become more and more apparent that the Storybrooke characters are not as fully fleshed out as the fairy tale versions. They seem to change depending on what's going to make the writer's life the easiest. The Emma I met in the pilot, wouldn't take Mr. Gold's word at face value. Really, she just accepted Mr. Gold's word that the Sheriff's job was hers after two weeks? It never occurred to her to go find the town charter after her visit from Regina? I liked the whole Henry wants to walk away from Project Cobra story line and Emma needing to restore Henry's hope. When Emma gave her speech about the fire I kept expecting ('wanting' is actually a better word) for someone to point out that it didn't really matter how the fire *started* her actions were still heroic. Who believes that Mr. Gold knew that Emma was going to tell the truth? She's a pretty easy read, IMHO.After I finished watching the ep though I realized that I had expected something...um...bigger from his son. I wasn't too surprised that Rumplestiltskin was such a low key character when he got his power, but I was expecting his son to be more than a prop in his story.
Have to say, I'm getting pretty sick of the "good guys" constantly declaring themselves as such. It's reaching obnoxious proportions the way they belabor the point over and over - real good folks don't call attention to it, they just are. Why is this show decent at giving complexity to the bad characters, but so terrible at doing the same for the good ones? Pro tip: Self righteousness is never a good look. And Emma can't even begin to pull it off.
The lack of complexity is the major flaw with the series. No character (even the evil ones) are really dynamic or "grey". Everything is so black and white and contrived. I wish the writers understood that contrived and convoluted is not the same as layered and complex.
It's odd, but I really never missed Legend of the Seeker (or even thought it was a great show), but watching this series the fairy tale stories makes me realize how much I miss LotS and how superior that show was to this.
I still don't see Rumpie/ Gold as "Evil" exactly... I think Regina/ EQ is more evil in the purest sense of the word and Gold/ Rumpie is power hungry. My guess is that Mr. Gold (and Rumpelstiltskin) is redeemable but Regina (and the Evil Queen in particular) are not.
It’s true. I almost feel condescended to watching the show, if that makes sense – like, the writers think they need to hold my hand. You’re right that the themes are incredibly simplistic, but it’s the way they are explicitly outlined and stated by the characters grappling with them in each episode that bothers me the most. Can’t they just let the narrative unfold without the, “Look! See what we’re doing here?” at every beat?
Apart from calling attention to the lack of character development, when the good guys are constantly running around telling everybody that they’re good, it just makes them look like assholes.
I think if I continue with this show, I may need to adjust my expectations. I keep hoping for subverted fairytales with relatable characters that feel like real people, and dilemmas without easy answers - I’m not wrong in thinking it was presented this way, am I? It gives every indication in the premise and marketing that it wants to be an adult show. But it really behaves like a kid’s show, doesn’t it?
I thought the episode was good. i miss snow white and prince charming though. also in the rumplestiltskin backstory when they were conscripting kids i felt like i was back watching legend of the seeker. at any moment richard and kahlan would leap out and save everyone.
I understand what you mean completely when you say you feel condescended to....
I think they do dumb it down and make everything so obvious, repetitive and clearly pointed out so that kids can understand it. Honestly though I don't think they need to do that and they are not giving kids enough credit....
Great episode! It felt weird to see Rumplestiltskin as an actually good person, who cares for his son. And then it got sad, when he started to act like a desperate soul and had to pay such a horrible price.
I'm so happy that Emma won, and chose to expose Mr Gold. But it's VERY disturbing that she owes him a favor.
That´s my opinion as well about the dagger. I started to think that it might come full circle and in the end Emma might have to kill Gold with it, and get his power. But that would make her crazy too, so there would have to be some sort of twist on that.
Loved this episode. Rumple's story was absolutly great and it really made me understand why he is how he is. (I am very curious as to what happened to his son now). And Emma is the Sheriff. I´m glad. Mr. Glass seemed a little reluctant to be Sheriff IMO. He seemed to care more about news.
Well I loved last night's episode--it gave us a lot more to go on in terms of the mythology! The minute I knew there was a magic 'dark' dagger involved, I thought "double edge sword"--->this sword has a soul/entity attatched to it and it will control you, not the other way...and I was right. Stilts is consumed by darkness and gives a compelling attribute to his position. Of course this is perhaps another LOST reference, since there was a magical dagger Dogan gives to Sayid to kill the smoke monster---who in effect projects mostly dead souls/memories/images of people, and consequently, Sayid had become "heartless" (feelingless) himself...What I also found interesting was the name ZOSO on the sword. I know this to be a name of a Led Zepplin album (one that has a lot of cool symbols on it) , but I couldn't remember what it refers to, an alien or something? So it's time to golook up info: from the urban dictionary: Zoso is not a word but rather, a symbol. The original symbol was used by Cardano in 1557, which he used as the magickal sigil for saturn, the planet that rules capricorn, Jimmy Page's Sign. Jimmy took this sybol and changed parts of it. The true meaning is one only known to him. In short it is an adapted occult symbol..It is not a word. Therfore an example is pretty d*** impossible.and from another website: I have been researching this for some time, and thanks to assistance from several other individuals I believe we have a simple and rational explanation for Page's symbol. It is nothing to do with Satan or three-headed dogs guarding the entrance to Hades. I will show below that the symbol is a sigil for the planet Saturn, the ruler of Jimmy Page's astrological sun sign, Capricorn. I will also reference texts where you can find the symbol yourself (it will help if you can speak French).DefinitionsGrimoire - a textbook on magic (or magick) Sigil - a symbol used in magic (or magick). The Zoso symbol is a sigil, which may be found in a book of Grimoires (magick).Symbol - an object, character, or other concrete representation of an idea, concept, or other abstraction.Rune - letters of early Germanic and Scandinavian alphabets.Clavicle - key. The Clavicles of Solomon = the Key of Solomon. Magick - an act designed to cause intentional change. The "k" was added by Aleister Crowley to distinguish the practice from showmen at fairgrounds.Alchemy - early form of scientific investigation into nature, combined with philosophy and mysticism. It might also mean we might want to look at Led Zepp's songs on that album for meaning...(which "going to California" always made me think of Lost) -but Battle of Evermore might also be a theme to consider...It's also known as Led. Zepp. #4 --so once again a LOST reference --John Locke/Smoke monster doppleganger-death-reflection parallels.Additionally it was point blank stated that "Using magic comes with a price.", suggesting that all magic might be be "bad"...which makes one wonder about the reality they were all once living in. --If it was created by magic...or perhaps begs the question, "where does magic come from?"Another thing I really like is how Stilts now mirrors the sheppherd, Charming! --They both have to take the place of others and suggests that Stilts is inflicting and reacting his own painful situation onto others.
Such a great episode!! So happy that Emma is now the Sheriff. She's such an interesting character and I can't wait to find out more about her past - why she was in jail, who Henry's father is etc.Loved seeing Rumples history. Only bad thing about the episode was the lack of Snow/Charming but Rumple and Emma's storylines were pretty strong so wasn't too bad :)
This was the first ep where I wasn't really feeling the show at all. It was rather dumbed down. The acting wasn't where I felt it was before the break. And you're right, the A-story was fully contrived.
Oh well. They can't all be winners. Hopefully it will turn itself around soon.
- Loved the fact that Gold was one step ahead of everyone throughout the entire episode, even when Emma thought she had him figured out. - I liked how Emma didn't simply or easily do the right thing. She struggled with it and made the situation more believable. - Gold and Regina facing off was fantastic. I need more of that on this show. The idea of having two rival "big bads" on the show is a really good one. - Showing pre-"Dark One" Rumple's desperation and lack of character explains how his personality evolved after getting his powers quite well. - OUAT is still underutilizing Giancarlo Esposito. Sydney did have a few seconds in the episode that showed a glimmer of an endearing personality but if you blinked you missed it. - How quickly the townsfolk rallied behind Emma seemed a bit silly.
It was amazing to finally get some insight into Rumple's character - I always figured he was dark and twisted from the beginning, but I should have known better after seeing Charming and Jiminy Cricket's back stories - they don't exactly aim for predictable on this show! If I didn't think Robert Carlyle was fantastic before, there's no doubting it now. SO glad to have this show back!
They keep bringing up that Emma owes Mr. Gold a favor. I think he'll end up deciding to use that favor to have Emma kill him with the dagger, without telling her the consequences of such an action.
I really enjoyed this episode. As a hole it had a bit of everything of the most enigmatic characters... We saw Emma incredibly vulnerable and an almost unbelievable background of Rumpelstiltskin. On a side note when the dark lord said "power" I swear I was waiting the following .."of the dark side"..
Great ep!
There are no more breaks in the foreseeable future right?
I disagree. This episode in particular suggest a big theme which is, that all of the characters are grey, because in their back stories they were all SO DESPERATE, or in poor situations that they made horrible choices to rise above it...took on other's identities, promised to give up children, killed others to obtain power, became thieves, ect. In the episode it is said that, "Using Magic Comes With A Cost", it suggests that using magic isn't worth it and is may be in most cases considered "a bad choice".
I think all of the characters are perfectly flawed. Additionally since we haven't seen all of the back stories yet, I can't help to think that even Regina/The Evil Queens story doesn't come from desperation, love, and fear of being alone, black-mailed, ect.
Stilts himself was lied too about the dagger's power and has no clue it would have it's own essence (another's soul) that would completely take him over and destroy whom he was. It also became a bit clearer, especially when you look at Charming's past situation, that Stilts seems to be inflicting the pain he suffers onto to others...
Additionally we see that it is hard for any hero to be a hero in world where 'whom people are' and what there actual motivations are, are not always easy to see. --We don't really know if Mr. Gold is still bad in this new persona, same as most anyone else, because we don't know 'the whole story' of who any of them were before in conjunction to what they choose to do now.
I love reading your work, you make me think..Why don't you consider writing a weekly review,if your not to busy? Can't wait to read you opinion after Fringe on Friday,or Sat. :)
Grey may not have been the correct word to use... Maybe "subtle" was more apt.
One could argue that because the Storybrooke residents are not truly themselves they are more caricatures of themselves... or one trait of themselves. Maybethat alone causes them to be less dynamic and nuanced.
Regardless, the "perfectly flawed" argument though nice, does not make them any more interesting to me on screen either. I just find the writing so in your face that it bores me. The characters too.
While there are many similarities to LOST, the writing on Once just seems magnitudes less organic than Lost did... For me at least.
Was I the only one who found the scene where Rumple was stealing the dagger incredibly dumb? I admit I wasn't watching that closely, but he just out a haystack outside on fire, then walks into the castle which is now also on fire, takes and dagger and that's it. Seriously?
I think because it has a magical premise, their isn't as in intense incentive for viewers to feel the weight of the mystery, I think the Storybrook characters are, so as you say caricatures, or a more limited aspect to themselves that perhaps they seem less defined.
--But it might be that this contrast is the point. --The deal with the daggor gives way into this idea that souls can be transferred and mixed with others, and maybe then also they can be "split apart" into more than one person/object...and that in a sense that is what Storybrooke did to them.
Even Henry begs the question is he really Emma's son, or is he reincarnated Evil Queen's father? -Can he be BOTH?
Thank for reading! I was thinking about writing for Alcatraz, but my computer might be on it's last legs! It's been doing some strange stuff and I have had it fixed twice and can't see spending the money on trying again, when most likely just getting a new computer in a couple of months is probably a better investment.
But I always write a bunch of craziness like this on the spoilerTV forum and I don't mind re posting some of it here, now that I have Disqus working right. :/
I am REALLY looking forward to FRINGE Friday! Can't imagine that there won't be some interesting things to talk about :D
Alcatraz would be great too! It seems like we like the same shows,i always look for you stuff on Fringe so i'm sure we will be seeing quite of bit of each other...Till Friday, and i will be checking out the forum soon,i just haven't had the time, its funny my laptops screen cracked so for now my husband and i are sharing one laptop. He uses for work,he is in the computer field and works with Australia,so he gets the laptop at 10 at night and i get it,early in the am and early night.... :)
I must admit that I found it a bit strange that he managed to accomplish that so easily. But since the old "dark one" was actually planning everything all along, maybe he was behind everything being empty and nothing being on Rumple's way? Still, I do agree that it felt a bit too easy...
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.
I loved it! Such a great episode. Awww at Rumple only wanting to save Bae, and becoming the new Dark One in the process. No wonder he went insane.
ReplyDeleteYay for Emma! I'm so happy she's Sheriff now. Mary and David were cute, as usual.
Also, "kiss my boot" needs to become a thing now.
awesome
ReplyDeleteReally Good.
ReplyDeleteNot enough D/MM though (I'm obsessed)
Great quote: "Kiss my boot!"
The next episode looks delicious (no pun intended)
Loved the ending. We haven't seen too much of Gold in Storybrooke and now I only want to see more of him.
ReplyDeleteThis episode makes me feel like Mr. Gold really is the true big bad of this show.
ReplyDeleteOMG .... BRAD DOURIF!!!
ReplyDeleteLoved this ep and Rumples backstory. Missed the sheriff though.
Me too. I've always suspected because Regina is just too obvious a villain. She wants to be happy and hurt anyone to get it but we have no idea about why Gold does what he does and that makes him dangerous.
ReplyDeleteThat bit at the end was so freakin' creepy.
ReplyDeleteYeah I agree, she still is really evil but Mr. Gold is like a master manipulator and a crazy creepy character.
ReplyDeleteLoved this episode! My fav episode so far
ReplyDeleteIt was awesome seeing Rumple as a "normal" person in fairytale world instead of the evil (and sort of gross) character we normally see
ReplyDeletegood episode
ReplyDeleteIt was so great!!! I loved it!! Can't wait for next week!
ReplyDeleteGood show. Now that we know why Rump/Gold is so evil, I wonder how he'll make Emma grant the favor she owes him.
ReplyDeleteWonder if the dagger is kept in the vault, near where Regina kept Graham's heart.
ReplyDeleteLoved Rumples origin story, and wondered what became of his son. Perhaps that is a story for another ep an perhaps that might be a clue to his vulnerability. Loved that Gold was pulling the strings the whole time and can't wait to see what "favor" he will seek from Emma.

It was okay. I really, really enjoy the Rump flashbacks. But the Emma-heavy A-story didn't do it for me. I guess I'm not a big Emma fan...

Good episode, not terribly plausible Storybrooke plot, but enjoyable nonetheless
ReplyDeleteI hope he is. I liked him as a normal person.
ReplyDeleteIm sorry but Once Upon a Time is so much better than Legend of the Seeker.
ReplyDeleteThat show was awful.
That´s my opinion as well about the dagger. I started to think that it might come full circle and
ReplyDeletein the end Emma might have to kill Gold with it, and get his power. But
that would make her crazy too, so there would have to be some sort of

If I didn't think Robert Carlyle was fantastic before, there's no doubting it now. SO glad to have this show back!
ReplyDeleteHope so...yeah, so far his material wasn't as multifaceted as on Breaking Bad.
ReplyDeleteJane Espenson did a great job, as expected.
ReplyDeleteThey keep bringing up that Emma owes Mr. Gold a favor. I think he'll end up deciding to use that favor to have Emma kill him with the dagger, without telling her the consequences of such an action.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed this episode. As a hole it had a bit of everything of the most enigmatic characters... We saw Emma incredibly vulnerable and an almost unbelievable background of Rumpelstiltskin. On a side note when the dark lord said "power" I swear I was waiting the following .."of the dark side"..
ReplyDeleteGreat ep!
There are no more breaks in the foreseeable future right?
Great episode! I loved it! Can't wait until Sunday! :)
ReplyDeleteI disagree.
ReplyDeleteI think all of the characters are perfectly flawed.
Well at least we know what happened to Rumple i can't believe i felt bad for him...Great episode!
ReplyDeleteI love reading your work, you make me think..Why don't you consider writing a weekly review,if your not to busy? Can't wait to read you opinion after Fringe on Friday,or Sat. :)
ReplyDeleteGrey may not have been the correct word to use... Maybe "subtle" was more apt.
ReplyDeleteOne could argue that because the Storybrooke residents are not truly themselves they are more caricatures of themselves... or one trait of themselves.
Absolutely, very disappointing so far. No idea why he signed on for such a dumb role.
ReplyDeleteWas I the only one who found the scene where Rumple was stealing the dagger incredibly dumb? I admit I wasn't watching that closely, but he just out a haystack outside on fire, then walks into the castle which is now also on fire, takes and dagger and that's it. Seriously?
ReplyDeleteGood points!
ReplyDeleteI think because it has a magical premise, their isn't as in intense incentive for viewers to feel the weight of the mystery, I think the Storybrook characters are, so as you say caricatures, or a more limited aspect to themselves that perhaps they seem less defined.
ReplyDeleteBut I always write a bunch of craziness like this on the spoilerTV forum and I don't mind re posting some of it here, now that I have Disqus working right.
ReplyDeleteI must admit that I found it a bit strange that he managed to accomplish that so easily. But since the old "dark one" was actually planning everything all along, maybe he was behind everything being empty and nothing being on Rumple's way? Still, I do agree that it felt a bit too easy...
ReplyDeleteI felt the same way. I think it suffered from the long anticipation.
