This is without doubt my most disappointing pilot of the 2011-2012 season.
Other pilots were worse for certain, but I did not have expectation for them to be good. There is potential anytime a cast is that talented, but the over-stylized show and the poor writing wasted the cast's talent. This one will not get a 3 episode watch from me so I hope episode 2 is a drastic improvement!
Already been a while that I saw the pilot, but I didn't like it at all. The cast is great, but the writing was surprisingly poor. I think I didn't laugh once which is bad considering this is not a dramedy like other SHO shows. Definitely gets 1 or 2 more episodes to prove me wrong, but I am disappointed.
Don Cheadle and Kirsten Bell: yes. Charecters that had me both repulsed and intrigued: yes (its Showtime, after all) Gripping plot: no. Laugh out loud funny: no.
I really was looking forward to this pilot, not only because of some great actors in the cast but also because I really like the description of the show. But after seeing it, this is by far the worst comedy pilot I've seen this season. I will not watch another episode!
I wasn't impressed. - I didn't buy into Don Cheadle as the charismatic, womanizing, sleazy, snake oil salesman. - Poor use of the supporting cast and the guest cast. - The plot wasn't exactly gripping. - The vulgarity and lewdness doesn't seem organic. It seems like it's there in a shallow attempt to make the material seem more edgy.
As a side note, I want to mention that I've read a handful of reviews of HOL and most mention that they weren't pleased with the freeze frame cutaways or Marty Kaan's home life (his father and son) but I think that those two things are the only two features of the show that really worked.
The bottom line is that this was a very uneven pilot with just as many negatives as positives. This show gets 3 more episodes to prove itself to me. If there's no significant improvement, I'm gone.
Finally got around to watch the pilot, and thought that that it was ok, albeit uneven. Love the actors and the performances that was turned in, but the writing was a problem. There was enough for me to see that there might be a shred of humanity that might somewhat redeem at least Marty. I do want to know more about the rest of his team and will give the show a few more eps before I render final judgement on whether or not to cut or keep.
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.
I really like this show ive seen the pilot 3 times. The cast is bat $hit crazy and i love it! lol

ReplyDeleteI also didn't like it much. It wasn't that funny or dramatic .....and the characters were mostly appalling.
ReplyDeletesaw the pilot and it was a wrap, no thank you!
ReplyDeleteI loved part of it and part of it I thought was just ok. but with Kristen Bell in it I can't keep away so I will be watching every week!!

I'm not sure if I like it or not yet. I think the stripper and Anna Camp's character were the highlight of the episode for me.
ReplyDeleteVery average. What a let down. Will give it a few more.
ReplyDeleteI usually give a show a few eps before I walk away but even KBell, Cheadle and Jean-Ralphio can't get me to tune in to this mess again.

I couldn't believe this show is based on a true story, It's really hard to believe. With that said the show was very funny I liked it.
ReplyDeleteNot impressed actually. Show with such a great cast should be much better.
