House of Lies - Season 1 - Advance Review

6 Jan 2012

‘House of Lies’ (Premiering Sunday January 8th) is Showtime’s latest 30-minute comedy in their line-up. Of course for every comedy on the network, the definition of “comedy” is stretched. From the network that has brought us Nurse Jackie, Weeds, Californication, and Shameless, House of Lies continues to bend the “comedy” genre.

But does it have a solid foundation?

The series stars Don Cheadle, Kristen Bell, Ben Schwartz, and Josh Lawson as management consults who will do anything to get a deal done. And I mean ANYTHING.

What seems to be a good idea as a premise turns out to be a poorly executed mess. The series has several issues, but the biggest one is that it doesn’t know what kind of show it wants to be.

  1. I dont like that site, use sites Hitfix.com if you want good tv-critics. They liked it more, so i would follow him instead of some site that has that silly name.

  2. What exactly don't you like about the site? Also, how about commenting about the show/article .

  3. I didn't like it either. Cheadle, KBell...I wanted to like it. Very disappointing. Now Jean-Ralphio needs to head back to Parks & Rec.

  4. I could have told you that much from the one preview

  5. I felt the exact same way about the pilot...

It was a mess. I still the series has some potential, but in the pilot everything seemed so forced. Even if I'm not a huge fan of crass, in your face series and humor in general, I can still enjoy a series on those lines if it's done well.... House of Lies was not sadly.

  6. The preview was a big red flag to me too. With the cast and pedigree of Showtime comedies I checked out the pilot despite my worries. If episode 1.02 is not a drastic change in tone or execution I' done....

  7. Yeah it was a mixed bag for me as well. I liked some of the stuff (his ex-wife was brilliant, and the final scenes were done well) but it was a bit half-baked, sadly.
