Green Arrow Project Nears Pilot Order at the CW

Smallville fans rejoice! The CW is getting back into the DC Comics universe and edging close to a pilot order for a new series starring the Green Arrow.

For the uninitiated, Green Arrow is sort of Batman meets Robin Hood. He’s hooded archer who creates trick arrows with special functions (explosives, grappling, etc), in addition to rocking a tight green suit. Like the Dark Knight, his secret identity is a billionaire — Oliver Queen, the former mayor of the fictional Star City. The comic book debuted in 1941 and was loosely inspired by the film The Green Archer, which was based on a novel by Edgar Wallace.

The character was first introduced to CW viewers on Smallville in 2006, played by Justin Hartley, who appeared in more than 70 episodes of the long-running series as the arrow-shooting hero. The Green Arrow was reportedly first added to Smallville in a guest run as a substitute for Batman, a character whose adaptation rights are exclusive to the film franchise.

Hartley is not involved in the new project, however. Here’s who is on board developing the show: Executive producers/writers are Greg Berlanti (Brothers & Sisters) and Marc Guggenheim (FlashForward), who also both worked on last year’s Green Lantern film, along with Andrew Kreisberg (Vampire Diaries, Fringe — plus he’s worked on the Green Arrow comic book). Berlanti Productions is producing in association with Warner Bros. Television.

If Green Arrow goes to series, who do you think should play the finest archer in all the land?

  1. Interesting....but I think I'd rather see the Deadman pilot by Eric Kripke instead.

  3. IF any hero series gets picked up I think it's a good thing.
So many don't even make it to pilot and so many of those that get a pilot get axed at that stage or in Season 1.

I watched the 'Three Inches' pilot/backdoor movie on SyFy last month and it was fun. Worth a series hot I thought, but maybe it would not have succeeded either if tit got picked up. I just liked the quirkiness of the premise and the concept of the less-than-SUPER-superheroes.

  4. The CW does like to use its actors in other projects so it would not surprise me if he does get the part if it goes to pilot.

Then again I don't know much about him so maybe he is not interested and had his fill of tight bodysuits in his time on Smallville.....

  5. Justin Hartley was one of the better things in Smallville, but if they had him, they would have to have Alison Mack (who I also would love) and I can't see her wanting to do more.

  7. Not necessarily. We never actually saw that Chloe and Oliver ended up together after everything happened so, as much as I liked them together, she doesn't have to be with him. Besides, he belongs with Black Canary anyway outside of Smallville so maybe they could bring back Alaina Huffman.

I am pretty open to a whole new cast though. Means they're less likely to stick with the changes Smallville made (like Tess being on the island with Oliver) and they can make it a proper adaption of the comics. Either way I'm pretty dang excited.

as much as i would like to see him in it to i know they wont. They had justin play green arrow for 3 years and smallville did his story in different ways. If the pilot uses the same actor it will be hard to go through storys like if they want to have oliver fight his darkness (like he did pretty much all seasons 8-10. I would love to see justin guest as someone else but i sincerely doubt they will have him return.

it is true all we see is they had a son (as u can tell by the way the son looks like justin and likes the bow and arrow stuff) but for all we know along the way they could've gotten divorced. but they could've stayed together we dont really know for sure.

  12. I don't want to put a damper on this but I'm always against re-hashing things.

The Green Arrow character had a good run on Smallville and I don't see the sense in re-booting him.
If they are also going to cast a new untried lead, that makes the whole thing even more shaky.

Don't get me wrong, I love super-heroes but it would be better starting from scratch with one that we know less, or nothing about, and  so can peel back his layers week by week like an onion!

Having said that, if they do pick it up, I wish it all the best!

  13. I'd like to see a better actor than Hartley, but as sexy as him... LOL

  14. Only if Justin is involved. I can't stand these constant reboots.

  15. Ummm, hello, Justin IS the Green Arrow for the DC TV universe, I know he tried the Aquaman thing too... honestly, I would just prefer the do a sort of Justice League live action thing and Tom W. can pop in during the season finales (and maybe after this last Nolan Batman film, we can get a live tv version of that too, oh yeah and I think the Wonder Woman legal drama is about wrapped up too, so it's plausible and doable, but I doubt it

  16. I always believed they should have spun him off from Smallville quite a while back. And I was hoping they would have still ater Smallville ended.
Now I think it might be interesting if they do try and approach this show as a spin off of sorts too. New people behind the scenes, but keeping up with the character from Smallville, and yes, cast Justin Hurtley (if he's up for it of course) and Alaina Huffman as Black Canary.

  17. REALLY?!! NOW??!!! Instead of right after Smallville ended and capitalise on (however small) audience it had?
