Game of Thrones - George R.R. Martin talks the Evolution of the Fantasy Drama

The Hollywood Reporter: FX credited Game of Thrones for showing that a fantasy drama could work at 10 p.m. Why is the slot important for the genre?
George R.R. Martin: Fantasy is the oldest form of literature -- it goes back to Gilgamesh and Homer. People like that were writing fantasy thousands of years ago. Unfortunately in television, for whatever reason, fantasy became thought of as a kids' genre. They would not make a sophisticated adult fantasy and it was really fighting. Even when they did, Beauty and the Beast, which was a show I was on back in the 1980s, we were trying to do Beauty and the Beast as a sophisticated adult drama but they put it on in the 8 o'clock time slot.

  3. Can't say I agree with GRRM's implication that "artistic" TV shows can't exist on broadcast. Most of the shows that I'd call artistic have been on broadcast... Why does it seem that the "unless it's super edgy and 'realistic' it's not worth anything" perspective tend to be so popular (even amongst some fantasy writers, apparently)?
