"Fringe has been a point of pride. I share the passion for the show that the fans have. It's vastly improved our Friday night. The hesitation in my voice is that it's an expensive show. We lose a lot of money on Fringe, and FOX is not in the business of losing money. Please don't start the letter-writing campaign, I can't take it. It's a decision we're going to have to make down the road, discussions haven't already started."
Source : Hitfix at the TCA.
Would it help if House (a very old, expensive show) was coming to an end this May (the decision was supposed to be made by now, it is not, and Reilly just said that FOX isn't in such a desperate place that they need to keep the show alive in some form when asked about a possible House spinoff) ? Absolutely.
Would Fringe's renewal be made easier if FOX doesn't renew Terra Nova (although Reilly has hinted today that he was pleased by the ratings, "some" of the episodes and the fact that it's a show for the whole family) ? Certainly.
Would it help if neither Alcatraz nor Touch (the two upcoming sci-fi additions to FOX's lineup) are successful ? Definitely.
But if Fringe comes back for a fifth season, it's obvious it is going to be with some serious budgetary cutbacks : less money for special effects, having a shortened season, or even losing a main cast member (or limiting his or her number of episodes) ? Who knows. Chuck went to season 5 but it experienced all that, maybe Fringe will have to experience it as well (the show has been struggling ratings-wise since Fall 2009 and yet season 2, season 3 and season 4 all had 22-23 episodes and we didn't lose any cast members over the years (they even added one this season with Seth Gabel)).
The main issue being money, I for one would gladly pay, like, $30 via a FOX Paypal account for a fifth and final season of Fringe, and if all the fans across both universes are also willing to do that, it would be swell... it's one of my crazy theories as I try to think of alternatives ways for Fringe to get renewed, but I'm sure that if hundreds of thousands of devoted fans from across the globe can do it, then money wouldn't be such a big issue anymore. If you love the show like I do, paying $30 (much less than a DVD boxset) is acceptable. If that's feasable, I don't know why Kevin Reilly wouldn't bring it up in a near future (it doesn't sound unfeasable to me anyway).
UPDATE :
My plan for us all to pay for season 5 of Fringe is feasable. First, let's recapitulate the facts :
- There's approximately 3.20-3.30 million viewers watching the show live on Friday nights (that's what the few Nielsen boxes say). With DVR recordings, that number goes up to 5.10-5.20 million viewers.
- Fringe is broadcasted in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Brazil, South Africa and in almost all european countries (according to Wikipedia). Even if perhaps many people don't wait for the broadcast of Fringe in their respective country to watch the show, there's still lots of millions of viewers overseas, and a lot of fans in these countries anyhow.
- The fans of Fringe are rabid fans, the best kind (just don't let them bite you).
- A full 22-episode season of Fringe must cost approximately between 60 and 80 million dollars to produce.
Well, if among the 5.20 million american viewers watching the show every week, there's even only 10% of them donating $50 (less than a new DVD boxset) to FOX to keep Fringe alive for another full season, that would mean 26 million dollars in Kevin Reilly's pockets. That's a third of the show's budget for a full season if it costs 78 million dollars to produce ($3.55 million/episode, I actually don't think they spend that much on Fringe).
And I'm talking about only 10% of the US fans watching the show live or DVRing it. If 20% of them are true fans and willing to give, we could double the amount, make it 52 million dollars. Plus, I'm sure there are many americans not watching Fringe live or DVRing it but who watch the show nonetheless and who would also gladly give money. And if we take into account fans from other countries, well, a fifth season would be funded very easily !
If the budget is between 60 and 80 million dollars for 22 episodes (between $2.72 million and 3.64 million/episode), here's an example of how it could go :
500,000 people giving 50$ : 25 million dollars (≏ 31% to 42% of the show's budget for a full season).
1,000,000 people giving 50$ : 50 million dollars (≏ 63% to 84% of the show's budget for a full season).
1,500,000 people giving 50$ : 75 million dollars (≏ 94% to 125% of the show's budget for a full season).
I'm sure there's a million devoted Fringe fans out there who would be willing to donate a certain amount of money via a FOX Paypal account. I would certainly give 50€ myself (for us in Europe giving 50€ would mean giving $63.50, that's even more interesting - even if donating just the equivalent of $50 (39.35€) would still be much appreciated).
LET'S DO THIS ! It actually doesn't seem impossible to pull this off. If FOX executives hear about an idea like that, it could convince them to try it, to set a minimum amount of money to generate on this Paypal account and we would all contribute... Desperate times call for desperate (crazy ?) measures.
Yes, it sounds very idealistic (some might say unrealistic or stupid), but I'm confident there's a lot of Fringe fans who really love this show and we would give money to keep it on the air, it can be done, I'm sure of that.

"point of pride bla bla bla..." bullshit, they're gonna cancel it.
ReplyDeleteI'm gonna need medication if they cancel it.
ReplyDeleteIt sounds horrible. I can't stand the thought of Fringe's end.
ReplyDeleteYou can take all my money, Kevin Reilly.
ReplyDeleteI understand completely if they cancel it. It's ratings suck something fierce. I can't imagine what Kevin Reilly must be going through as a fan of a show he most likely will have to cancel. Unfortunately, FOX isn't in the business of losing money.
ReplyDeleteI laughed at his line begging fans not to start a letter-campaign. Because that won't do anything other than annoy him.
Just give this season a good ending and I'll be happy.
If Kevin Reilly was being honest he would have said "I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for a fifth season but, on the bright side, there's probably an alternate universe out there where Fringe is a huge hit and won't be canceled."
ReplyDeleteAww... just when I was starting to watch, just my luck
ReplyDeleteIf we're not getting a season 5, I hope we have lots more episodes to 4. By the way, can anyone figure out that smoke picture? I see what looks like 3 suns, an eye, maybe Batman, but I give up.
ReplyDeleteif he's a fan then just let the showrunners know the deal and let them devise a proper ending. nothing--even cancellation--would be worse than not getting that. that said, I hope for a 13 ep renewal. let them really finish if the way they intended.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad Reilly is being upfront (or relatively as there's still a fair bit of colorful language that precedes the main point) in saying that they are in fact losing money on Fringe. I have faith that the Fringe team could work wonders with a smaller budget or a shortened season. I could deal with a 12-5 episode season 5 because it could play out like a cable show would. I could even deal with handing over 30-50 dollars to Fox saying "Just shut up and take my money, and give me more Fringe" if it could work that way, but I think that if given the right signal (aka: Hey, we're going to give you a season 5, and that's probably it...and smaller budget for a shorter season) then the writers/producers will be able to present us fans an amazing final season. This show has always had a pristine look to it that is unmatched by other tv shows in my opinion, and while a budget cut would be very painful, I'd bet that the incredible resources at the show's disposal could rise up to the challenge...
ReplyDeleteSame universe where Veronica Mars is in season 8... :(
ReplyDeletenooooooo it's can't end now ;_______;
ReplyDeleteTime to assemble, Fringies! Let's try to delay it for as long as we can!
ReplyDeleteI think that the creators, who would have a much better idea about the show's renewal prospects, should discuss it among themselves and if the chances are bleak, they should come up with an ending with the remaining episodes and say this is the last episode, the series finale. I would really hate to see a cliffhanger at the end of this season only to find out I have to read the rest in some online comic or worse, not at all.
ReplyDeleteI know... Even if I expect Fringe to be cancelled (I didn't think it would get a 4th season) having official word will be very upseting. I'm really really going to miss this show. I just hope we get closure.
ReplyDeleteAnd The West Wing in season 13 ( http://i50.tinypic.com/x1m87t.jpg , http://26.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lina1hNjrW1qz4wylo1_r1_500.png ).
ReplyDeleteI'm sure that if they think too long about renewing or cancelling Fringe, someone who's good with computers will set up a Paypal account, start spreading the word about it, people will donate what they want and it will at least show FOX people are ready to pay to keep Fringe alive.
And if there's one thing I've learned from TV, it's that when a shady dude drops off an envelope full of cash on the good guy's table, he owns him (we're the shady dude here).
I'm thrilled by season 4 so far, almost as good as season 3. Sure, we don't know where we're heading yet, the new shapeshifter thing is a little blurry but it's a new chapter, it's normal that it takes time to build new grounds.
Losing Chuck is already tough (the show had a good life and I'm glad it's ending now though), I don't want to lose Fringe, too (and if CBS cancels The Good Wife, let me tell you all hell will break loose and the divorce between me and dramatic series on network TV would be consummated).
At least you won't be painfully disillusioned when they do cancel it... Some people blindly follow any positive spin people put out. Keeping in mind of course that in the past Reilly has actually been a straight-shooter about Fringe's chances.
ReplyDeleteOh God... I expected this sort of news since last season but it's still very upseting to see that even Reilly, who's been very supportive of Fringe, ran out of good news...
ReplyDeleteI'm not convinced about the budgetary cutbacks at all. If having a 5th
season means that Fringe becomes half the show it was because of a lack
of means, then I'd rather it ended this season with a proper and epic
ending. I wouldn't mind it (in fact, I'd appreciate it) if Lincoln
weren't around. But this is essentially a 3 people show, so there's no
way Fringe can do without one of its main characters (The X-Files
without Mulder was so very pittyful...). I'd be more than happy with a
13 episode 5th season if that were enough to keep it on the air for a
little longer so that the showrunners could write the ending properly,
but I'm feeling quite sceptical about this...
YOU NEVER SHOULD HAVE COME HERE! YOU KILLED MAH SHOW.
ReplyDeleteJust kidding. This is something we've dealt with for 3 years now. It's a miracle the show is still on in the first place.
It can't be worse than the ending to Carnivale ... or could it?
ReplyDeleteI will cut someone if they don't wrap it up nicely.
God, that would be a nice universe to live in!!!
ReplyDeleteIt's a face in the smoke. And those 3 lights are in a lot of Fringe promo stuff.
ReplyDeleteI think season 4 has a 23 episode order (as of now at least).
It's not fair, how can shows like CSI loose almost all of its original cast members and still go on for year. And a brilliant show like Fringe is threatened to be cancelled. If Fringe is cancelled I'm not going to be watching a whole lot of TV anymore.
ReplyDeleteRight now a 12-13 episode 5th season would be the best, best case scenario. It works for me...
ReplyDeleteThis sounds absolutely awful, though not unexpected. At least he's been quite straightforward, but if the show finally ends up being cancelled this year I really hope they tell the producers with time enough for them to answer as many things as they can.
ReplyDeleteAnd sign me for the money-giving thing. I'd be more than willing to donate 50 bucks if that helps to keep the show on air. (It's a shame that international viewers are not taken into account for anything). Sigh.
ohhh god!!!
ReplyDeleteYeah, when they renewed season 4 with a FULL season pickup, I about passed out from disbelief. "Guys!!! It's not doing so well for a full season! We would've been happy with 13 episodes! THANKS!") But I immediately thought to myself "Well, if we DO get a season 5, it'll be SHORT and to the point...)
ReplyDeleteYeah, if they just cut the season in half, they could build it up to the very end with arguably the same production values and really use every episode to be main arc-related. Maybe solving some case that leads to a bigger issue and so on and so forth with a huge ending that puts the characters where the writers want to be...
ReplyDeleteSo it's a good thing I never finished season 2 of Carnivale?
ReplyDeleteThey retain their winning ratings for several years. The reason people are leaving shows like CSI is because they've been on the show for years, and it's still a ratings success. That's different from Fringe's problems because Fringe's ratings are in the toilet.
ReplyDeleteMY heart still hurts when I think of Carnivale's ending!
ReplyDeleteOk I know it was the ending to the first act of the proposed 6 season plan, but it was just not enough!
I think Fringe is further along in the over all mythology arc as whole series, but a cliffhanger or surprise twist would not suffice for me personally. I think they need to answer a good portion of the mythology in case it ends up being a series finale.
I trust the writers and TPTB to an extant.. so here;s hoping!
They cancel it before s5 and without giving us a proper ending and I am going to stop starting new shows. It's just not worth it. There are a lot of ended or ending shows that I know are a full story. I am going to stick to those.
ReplyDeleteI can't see BOTH Alcatraz and Touch being successful and if 'House' gets cancelled at least Fringe could possible continue, but yeah, if someone proposes the whole $30 idea to FOX then I'm absolutely in 100%. We MUST have a final fifth season!
ReplyDeleteThey DO need to focus on the main arc!!!! They miraculously get a full 4th season and they've basically "wasted" (don't get me wrong, I love this show and will watch to the end no matter what. Fringe is never a waste of time, but...) 7 episodes on standalones! So if they get a short last season they'd better give us a mythology-loaded final arc.
ReplyDeleteHere is what JJ has to add: http://tv.ign.com/articles/121/1216068p1.html
ReplyDeleteHmmm, that makes me push back Carnivale on my to watch list... Or even put it off there all together.
ReplyDeleteI really do hope we get a season 5, but it does seem we won´t. So I guess I have to hope for FOX to come to a decision soon, so there is time for the ending to be written.
ReplyDeleteplease don't cancel it :'(
ReplyDeleteI'm not ready for this :'(
I've never been so in love with a show like I'm with Fringe
If they cancel it it will break my heart
In fairness, I think Fox and Kevin Reilly have been great to Fringe on the whole.
ReplyDeleteAt the end of the day, as he says, they lose a lot of money on Fringe!!
They are starting ep 15 now, I believe, so if this were the last season and FOX were kind enough to give them time to tie things up that would mean that they would need to tell them they're cancelled now... The way I see it, either we get a short 5th season or we're left with an open ending (or not the ending we could hope for).
ReplyDeleteThe standalone aspects of this show have always ended up being important in some respect to later episodes or always delve into emotional/philosophical questions the writers want to pose to the audience. And from the beginning we were told that the show will have standalone episodes, or a case of the week happening even when the main arc is brought front and center. Having rewatched a few of the standalone episodes of the season, I feel as though I'm being to hard on what they are doing. I want payoff now... I want mystery and fast-paced story-telling now because I feel the pressure of the impending end of the show. I think we all feel that. But I think the writers have taken that pressure and just ignored it and have done their best to fill the season up with just the right amount of intrigue, and standalone episodes so that they can transition from the "Where is Peter Bishop?" to the next mystery of season 4...whatever it may be. I also think that we need to take into account that episode 8 was supposed to be a big one that we were to get last November...and it still isn't here because of the MLB rain-out and all...so once we get a taste of the next 2-3 episodes (Which are fairly heavy in the myth-arc and are actually "to be continued" sort've situations) we might see that the writers are doing their jobs and trying to have everything fleshed out and properly timed. I have so much faith in these people, it's kind've scary. Also, they said that if they do get the worst possible scenario and the season is the end of the show, they have something up their sleeves. I hope it doesn't come to that however.
ReplyDeleteIt is such a hard thing to handicap because of so many FOX series being up in the air or yet unaired!
ReplyDeleteTerra Nova could be cancelled, House too... Will both Alcatraz and Touch succeed? Odds are FOX will want 2 (or 3) new dramas for next year. I think The Finder will make it to Season 2. So that leaves House, Terra Nova, Alcatraz, Touch and Fringe competing for what is likely 3 schedule spots at most.
I honestly have no idea at this point how they will decide. I had thought Terra Nova was done (and still think it deserves to be cancelled), but my gut tells me FOX may renew it now. I think if Terra Nova gets renewed it is a death nail for Fringe.... unless both Alcatraz and Touch fail miserably.
UGh!
Here's hoping 'Terra Nova' bites the dust and one of 'Alcatraz' or 'Touch' fails miserably too. But FOX still needs something for Friday nights. I remain confident that we may get a 13-episode fifth and final season to wrap everything up. Plus, it would coincidently end on 100 episodes, a shoe-in for a syndication deal and will please the OCD.
ReplyDeleteI do agree about the standalones, they prove to be important to the story and I do enjoy them. It's just that I feel like last season ended in a crutial point regarding the main story, the war between the universes, and they have totally ignored it so far. My concern is not so much about the standalones, which I do appreciate, as the fear that they won't have time to deal with everything they want to. But you are right about the showrunners and I know they want to do the best they can. I was caught in the heat of the moment, this is frustrating!!!!
ReplyDeleteI had the same thought before Season 4 started, but my feeling of Season 5 being greenlit has lessened as Season 4 went on. I think it makes sense on some level to do 13 or more episodes and hit the magical syndication number.
ReplyDeleteRealistically, even if Alcatraz and Touch succeed, a 13-episode season of Fringe could air as a mid-season series, or start it in the fall and run it through Xmas and begin a new series after the holidays.
So many possibilities if they decide they want to give FRINGE another season.... Well, if they think it is worth it to do so.
That's my opinion as well. I think even ending at the season 4 finale FOX has been nothing but supportive for a show that is on par with the ratings of CW shows. If I wasn't caught up in this show like I am and happened to be an analyst for the ratings of FOX, I'd have sent it packing a year ago at least.
ReplyDeleteYes. Take everything. Just give me my fix!
ReplyDeletei hope they make another season but if this is the end hope it ends with a bang
ReplyDeleteYes, I was aware of the West Wing going on too. But it might not be that universe lol
ReplyDeleteIt won't end now. It'll end in May.
ReplyDeleteI really liked Carnivale. However, with that show more than probably any other show I was constantly like "WTF is going on?"
ReplyDeleteI think it is still unique and well done enough to warrant a watch.
ReplyDeleteKnowing you get an ending to Act I, and not real series finale going in might lessen the disappointment for you? OR I guess it may just keep you from watching altogether! XD
Even despite the series finale I think it is one of the better series ever on TV.
Afraid to say that the idea of putting $30 into a paypal account is a bit of a ridiculous idea. The small percentage of people who would actually do it on a low rated show wouldn't even be close for them to stop and think.
ReplyDeleteDon't get me wrong, I don't want Fringe to end, but suggesting people give money to FOX is like asking people to give them their money because the world is going to end in december 2012.
I just realized...West Wing kept getting renewed in Red universe, where the White House was destroyed on 9/11 and not replaced until early 2009. Perhaps the Red-world viewers are nostalgic for a (relatively) simpler time?
ReplyDeleteEven though as you said it is idealistic I would really like to see Fox use your idea. I would pay for it.
ReplyDeleteAll I ask for is a proper ending, surely a short S5 could allow this happen, even if its like 6 episodes or 13 JUST ANYTHING PLEASE
ReplyDeletei think people invest on the show when the buy the dvds dont get me wrong. I could deal with a short s5 season to wrap things. but i doubt the whole fans pay will matter to fox. people invest on the shows and the their francise when they buy their dvds OST Official marketing stuff . Fox could follow LOST example and make some stuff through it ... official t-shirts promote more the show worldwide more geek stuff marketing etc etc ....if fox decides they worth to renew they will no matter what we say..
ReplyDeleteI can't even think about Fringe being cancelled. I'm just going to bury my head in the sand until there's a definite answer out there.
ReplyDeleteCount me in with the money idea. I would be happy if we get a short S5 to wrap it up properly. No, I wouldn't, yes I would, no I wouldn't...
ReplyDeleteAh, that's good. That's about 16 or so more episodes. I do see the face, though it's a weird one. The 3 lights, I wonder what those could mean?
ReplyDeleteWhere did you get 23? Wyman tweeted the other day that it's 22, which is the full season :)
ReplyDeleteI hope it can at least get a 13 episode order. That way it will get up to 100 episodes.
ReplyDeleteOk, you lost me with the update. I would totally participate in that, except the part where the viability goes out the window.
ReplyDeleteIt was a guess.
ReplyDeleteI would pay 50 bucks! I know this doesn't sound good, but if this is an answer for a cry for help, then I think we should take it seriously.
ReplyDeleteOh ok :)
ReplyDeleteLOL, I always knew, Fringe would be the financial ruin for me :)
ReplyDeleteAgree, DarthLocke4. Reilly said discussions haven't started yet, but maybe we can make the suggestion to him so he'll have some time to think about it :)
Now this sucks, really fucking bad, but I'm glad Reilly is leveling with us. I'd feel much better knowing this is the last season and that Pinkner and Wyman have a spectacular ending for us, than being blindsided in May with a cancellation and a massive cliffhanger.
ReplyDeleteIn another article, Pinkner and Wyman say that the season finale can function as a series finale. I'm very happy to hear that, considering what Reilly just said. And, even if the ending is a cliffhanger, they can continue as a series of graphic novels.

If you are also a Fringe and Community fan, it might have crossed your mind the if we do the same thing we did for Community for Fringe, they might not get canceled.
ReplyDeleteWe got more people to watch Community, We got NBC to see how much we cared about it and more importantly, we got Community to air the rest of season 3 at least. I'm sure they won't cancel it now though. They know how much we think of it.
It will be a long shot but at least we can say we did all we could to save Fringe.
So we can Tumblr/Facebook/Tweet posters with Fringe's equivalent of "#SixSeasonsAndAMovie." We can do a protest at Fox studios, chanting Fringe-y stuff. (I know I'm not being very specific.)
Please, all Fringe/Community fans, unite and help save Fringe.
Thank you.
Hi, it's me again. Twenty-two, twenty-three, it still means we have a lot to look forward to after an interrupted first part of the season. There's still a chance they could wrap it up well this season, if season 5 is not to be.
ReplyDeleteI see the face, and I think it's a person dematerializing.
No - you should watch - beautifully done - just watch with the understanding that you're gonna be fiercely pissed at the end.
ReplyDeleteI think you'll love it if you watch - it was only the cancellation that sucked a moose. There was so much they could've done with it. If you have trouble letting go, you may struggle with it. I still wonder what may have been ...
ReplyDeleteIve already commented on how this is not realistic but since then there has been an update.
ReplyDelete10% is completely unrealistic. Yes Fringe has a devoted fan base, but how many of those are people who comment about it on websites etc. Who would even be made aware of a paypal account being in existance. Let's say *that is 10%, then you have to discount the people who decide (and I will freely admit to being in this group) that whilst they love the show, there are a lot bigger issues facing the world and myself, that my money could be put to better use, spending it on something that is more immediately worthwhile whether it be on charity or on something as simple as food, then there are the people who just simply can't afford to send £35 to £40 (Im UK based so I guess the exchange rate works out round that) on a punt. It's like throwing money onto a fire. I'm not even going to go into other reasons like FOX morals, the recent paypal problems etc.
I don't know what its like in the US, but here, even big charity telethons have struggled in recent years and as much as I hate to say it because, behind Lost, Fringe is my favourite show ever, there will be other shows. We don't even know if this one is cancelled.
Also who maintains this paypal account, who then sends the money to FOX and makes sure it goes to Fringe, hell, what are the legal ramifications of sending that much money around or setting up something like this!
I understand some fans desperately wanting this to continue and trying to figure out anyway to get it back but this idea is wrong. I'm sorry, I don't like being utterly negative especially to people's hopes and ideas, especially on a show I love. But this is really not a good thing to be thinking about.
What's more it's totally irresponsible -
What happens if people do donate? Which some will. But you fall well short? Do they get there money back? Do you just give it to FOX and find they cancel Fringe anyway? With no clear paypal account and direction who starts it up, how do you police that there is one main account? How do you stop any scams etc.
Absolutely one of the best ever on TV - so worth a watch but the ending (which would have been the greatest cliffhanger EVAH) just leaves you there with nothing more to go on. I kept hoping for a movie or anything.
ReplyDeleteClancy Brown is the most amazing thing ever.
Tell me about it ... I still don't know wtf happened at the end. Mind still blow years later ...
ReplyDeleteI'm up for the paying idea, if:
ReplyDeleteI have proof the money's going where it should be,
and if I can convince my parents to go with it.
That second part is going to be the hard one.... :)
Watch live, write the sponsors, buy the products you see in the commercials, thank those companies.
ReplyDeleteDon't give up hope.
i would totallly do that!! anything for a season 3!!!!
ReplyDeleteI know this idea is flawed, I just thought that since FOX hasn't even started discussing with the producers about finding ways to renew the show, we should let them know about this idea to help Fox pay less money for a fifth season. If the accountants at FOX monitor this Paypal account and if there's a way they can send back the money to their owners in case not enough was raised (a limit to reach would have to be set in the first place), then it could perhaps work.
ReplyDeleteRaising money, I don't know what else would acually make a difference, petitions are cool but in the end what matters to FOX is purely hard cash.
I said that too, to let them know. And you are right besides finally everyone watching live, the language they speak is money. I've been teasing because I have a one million Reichs Mark bill and I would buy FOX but unfortunately this bill is not even worth the paper it's printed on :)
ReplyDeleteAgain Im sorry for being negative, its nice to see people be passionate about a show. I just don't see how this could work mainly from a legal standpoint (Im not versed in UK law let alone any other countries law, but I could at least see people frowning on FOX accountants monitor the account especially if there isn't enough money in there/the show gets cancelled - I can imagine thats a hassle FOX would want to avoid) and from a logistics point of view.
ReplyDeleteIf you find a way to do it, good luck to you, I want you to succeed, and I want Fringe to return to finish its story. Having signed the Community petition I do believe fan contribution can help, I just worry people leap before they think.
Also I want to apologise to you personally, I was looking back through my past comments on spoilertv, and within the last few weeks I've been resoundingly negative to you before. It's not personal, honest!
ReplyDeleteThe problem with that idea is how long before they realize they can force us to pay for ALL of their programming (ie, pure profit for them). The idea that a show is "too expensive" to produce is ridiculous. Maybe if they considered what people on the internet have done with $0 dollars and look into getting special effects companies who offer more bang for their buck -- or pay these damned actors less, or hell, if the guys whining about not enough profits, pocketed less of the profits (because taking home a million a week instead of 1.5 million is REALLY going to hurt their pocketbooks), we could keep our great shows instead of sitting here contemplating how people suffering from massive unemployment, crappy salaries, and the skyrocketting cost of living should be paying to have the shows they love continue.
ReplyDeleteI know. I just meant when it's so good .. I don't want it to end ever :)
ReplyDeleteI'm a little frustrated...I haven't seen too many negative complaints on good ol' spoilertv but there are countless people out for Kevin Reilly's blood and it just makes me so angry. I understand that people are upset about the news today that Fringe more likely than not will not get renewed but it is in no way Kevin Reilly or Fox's fault that this is happening. Believe me, I have been SICK to my stomach thinking about no more Fringe but the only ones we should be blaming are the Nielson viewers who insist on watching mindless television instead of tuning in to the most awesome show on TV ever. Even worse are those who claim to love Fringe but gave up this season before the writers even got a chance to finish the storyline and in effect, brought the ratings down even lower. But to blame Fox because "this is what Fox does" is beyond ridiculous. Fox and especially Mr. Reilly fought tirelessly to save Fringe and miraculously through their generosity and our hard work, we got a season 4. And while we haven't gotten official word and miracle of miracles, we could still get a season 5 or at least a partial one, even if we don't, I for one am still EXTREMELY grateful to have gotten a season 4 and hold no animosity towards Fox.
ReplyDeleteI guess I needed to rant a little ;) Better than crying, huh? (that will come later)
ReplyDeleteQUOTE: "Fringe has been a point of pride. I
ReplyDeleteshare the passion for the show that the fans have. It's vastly improved
our Friday night. The hesitation in my voice is that it's an expensive
show. We lose a lot of money on Fringe, and FOX is not in the business
of losing money. Please don't start the letter-writing campaign, I can't
take it. It's a decision we're going to have to make down the road,
discussions haven't already started."....
Yep, figures... It's all about Money Money Money....

This also give me a knot in my stomach that Season 4 actually IS the final Season....

For the year... Nielsen users are watching. And they pick up numbers from Canada as well apparently.
ReplyDeleteNielsen’s list of the ten most time-shifted shows via DVR and PVR, which it measured by calculating the growth between Nielsen's live ratings and Live +7 ratings.
Nine series populating the Top 10 air on cable... Fox’s Fringe was the lone mainstream network show.
Here is the full list:
1. American Horror Story (FX), +95.3%2. Covert Affairs (USA), +95.1%3. Suits (USA), +94.5%4. Franklin & Bash (TNT), +92%5. Psych (USA), +90.3%6. Sons of Anarchy (FX), +85.8%7. White Collar (USA), +85.6%8. Justified (FX), +83.9%9. Fringe (Fox), +80.3%10. The Glades (A&E), +78.8%
Yeah i dont see this going past this season that sucks
ReplyDeleteI'm in to donate. Let's do it!
ReplyDeleteI love Fringe, think it is an amazing show... but I can't argue with the ratings. Clearly the fan base it has is a small one and at the end of the day if it makes no economic sense for the show to be renewed then that is what the network is going to do. I am not going to bash any of the higher rated Friday shows, becasue their fans are likely to be equally passionate and devoted, but for me Firnge is head and shoulders above them in terms of quality and sotry telling. I am just a little sad that not enough people agree with me to make the show viable.
ReplyDeleteAll that said I am not completely giving up on it getting a renewal. At this stage if they only renewed it for 12 of 13 episodes I would still be extatic that we will get more.
Unless the rating pick up than I can't see a season 5. If do give 5th season i say it would be a 13 episode rather than full 22/23 episode
ReplyDelete!!!!
ReplyDeleteWe simply somehow need to get more viewers who have one of those Nielsen Boxes and try to hypnotize them so that they watch FRINGE instead of another show...
Please forgive me for acting a bit desperate....
♥
I haven't actually seen the show since the end of the first season. I stopped watching when there were rumours of cancellation even back then. I really loved the show, but I didn't want to be disappointed by something unfinished. Now, I was actually on amazon looking to buy seasons 1-3, thinking the show will finish its run, and I'm now hearing this!
ReplyDeleteWhen looking at JJ's and Kevin's words about the show, and since season 5 would be it's last, why would FOX cancel it altogether? It's bad enough canceling a show fans love, when it's in its first season. It's worse if you shoot it in the head right before the finish line.
It is an expensive show, but Kevin's words about the fans and how it has created a Friday night for the network were nice. Could he really cancel it altogether? Or do you think they would work out the best plan to suit everyone? Hell, Chuck has lasted longer than anyone dreamed it would because of the fans.
With the promise that the 5th would be the last, it should be worked out in some way for the show to make its final goodbyes. Either as half a season, or less money on this or that, but it should return.
Now what's the exchange rate for $50 to £'s?
Kevin, just cancel it. The showrunners have said that they have an "in case of cancellation" ending all ready to go. The longer you delay it, the more likely the odds are that we're going to lose YET ANOTHER show on a cliffhanger ending that will never get resolved. THAT'S what fans hate...
ReplyDeleteSo when do we start collecting? Who's in charge? When do we tell Reilly we're paying for it?
ReplyDeleteFringe is more than a TV show, at least to me. And yes, I'm firmly grounded in the real world. But I've learned a lot by watching it, interest in science, reading more books, learning new words and so forth. Fringe stands for Honor, Honesty, Courage, Fate and Faith, and Loyalty.
It is sad that viewers choose more mindless shows over something that is so awesome.
Remember to watch live this Friday!!!
"In the end I have to believe in Hope"!
Since it moved to Friday, I almost always watch live. But I'm pretty sure I don't count because I live in Canada.
ReplyDeleteThank you for watching live. Thank you for your support :)
ReplyDeleteDesperate times call for desperate measures, and this is one of those times.
ReplyDeleteNobody counts unless they have a neislon box connected to their tv. Cortexifan just loves to tow the party line, and I love him/her for it. I've mentioned this fact to him/her a few times in the past, but he/she keeps the ole line going. "Watch Live!"
ReplyDeleteGotta love the guy/gal for trying!
Now for what we ACTUALLY CAN do to help the show:
DVR it and watch the commercials, instead of fast-forwarding them. Watch on Demand also without fast-forwarding. Those two things get counted and added to the ratings totals. Buy advertiser's products if you can afford it. Thank the advertisers for their support of Fringe via twitter, with the hashtag #Fringe do this even if you cannot afford the products. It is free to use twitter, and blowing up Nissan's twitter account with "Thanks for supporting my favorite show #FRINGE !" is not a lot to ask for. Do this many times, and get your friends to do this too, even if they rfeally don't care for Fringe, tell them it is a favor for you, and that you'd do it for them too if they were to ask.
TWITTER PEOPLE!!!! TWITTER CAMPAIGN!!!
THANK YOUR FRINGE ADVERTISERS, TELL THEM YOU WILL BE BUYING THEIR PRODUCT THANKS TO FRINGE! USE TWITTER TO SAVE FRINGE!!
Ricky :) I'll take it as a compliment :)
ReplyDeleteLet me re-phrase my statement then: NIELSON BOX OWNERS: Watch Fringe and watch it live!!!!!
Yes you would....I'm in,lets throw this idea out there and see what happens..can't hurt.
ReplyDeleteI said this to you before and i will say it again,..MY FRIEND YOU ROCK! I love your passion and you have a heart of gold. What ever the out come, when ever it ends you have become a better person because of Fringe. In my book you are one of the lucky ones,it will always be a part of you. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks laura3341,
ReplyDeleteyou are right. Fringe will always be a part of me.
Just recruited one new co-worker to watching. The other one new co-worker already watches and her name is "Rachel" :)
Just keep spreading the word.
As young Peter says to young Olivia in Subject 13: "You (We) got to try something, right?"
Yep,i have been plugging away,my fingers have been getting a good workout spreading the word. I went food shopping the other day and i left a 8x10 printed paper with all the info about us and what we are trying to do.I was pretty surprised,at first the manager said no until i showed it to her.The only reason she let me is because she is a fan of Fringe. She new Fringe was in trouble ratings wise but she didn't know hat to do till now.Hopefully this will generate better info for Fringe Fans in my immediate area.....I am thinking of putting an ad in the PennySaver (local newspaper, very local),and later this morning i am going to find out how much an ad would be on our local cable station,it reaches about 250,000 people,i think! I have no idea what it will cost for a 30 second commercial.....we will see what happens!
ReplyDeleteYes we gotta try something! :)
What did you put on your flyer?
ReplyDeleteGeneral stuff, watch live, neilson familys watch,record..Pass on that we may lose Fringe, write, tweet;for more info come to spoilertv, see what we are trying to do.If i knew the manager was into it i would have made the sign a little larger i didn't want to cram to much stuff on it,people would not read it,it would have been to busy. The header started "where is Fringe,Fans Unite.".I gave it as much info while keeping it clean looking......
ReplyDeleteSame question: Are we going to do something with this money idea? Because I got money left over this month and would gladly give it to Fringe!
ReplyDeleteI think that with all the buzz around crowdsourcing, this might be a very good idea! They could put the 5o season as a goal on kickstarter, offering something in return for big contributions (like a download code for all episodes in HD, or name in the credits, a exclusive t-shirt, etc). I would definitively pay for this.
ReplyDeleteyour pessimistic attitude is nothing short of stupidity. Hopefully you are not a CEO of a major company
ReplyDeleteMoney is what drives the machine! What will happen? Wouldn't be so bad if they give a "plausable ender" though in season 4. I can't stand the just sudden cut!
