Fringe - Season 5 Discussions Underway

22 Jan 2012

When Fox president Kevin Reilly told journalists earlier this month that he’s essentially losing money on Fringe, he wasn’t just putting the show’s rabid fans on notice that a fifth season is far from a slam dunk, he was sending the following message to Warner Bros. Television: The ball’s in your court.

Basically, in order for Fox to justify renewing the low-rated cult fave, Warner Bros. would have to agree to drastically reduce the show’s license fee (i.e. the amount the studio charges the network for each episode).

But what’s that magic number? Sources confirm that both sides are currently trying to hash that out. “We remain hopeful that Fringe will be able to continue,” co-creator J.J. Abrams tells TVLine.

Warner Bros. no doubt remains even more hopeful. A fifth season would put Fringe at or very close to 100 episodes, a milestone that would enhance the show’s syndication prospects. (A studio rep declined to comment.)

The clock is ticking, but not as quickly as one might think. If this does turn out to be Fringe‘s final season, it wouldn’t actually impact producers’ Season 4 end game.

“Worst case scenario, if this were the last aired season of Fringe… we know what the end of this season is going to be,” EP Jeff Pinkner recently told TVLine, ”and it can function as a series finale.”

  1. IMO Jeff Pinkner, worst case scenario is that the season's finale "could" work as a series finale...

  2. Well its good that talks are taking place, seems like its down with WB at the moment, let's hope they do the right thing. Like I've said before I don't need a 22 ep season, just a 13 ep one would be ok if they could finish the story how they need to.

  3. In the end I have to believe in hope...

  4. Fringe WILL have another season and if it's not here, it will be in another universe. Worst case scenario, we'll just need to crossover!

  5. I would take even 13 episodes next season. When you look back at the first or second season, only about 10 episodes in both seasons were about the main storyline. So 13 episodes would work the story. I don`t get it when people say that 13 episodes won't be enough, it would because of what I said in the beginning of this comment

  6. yeah it would be enough all the eps would just been myth/arc based and not case of the week

  7. I really really hope for another season of this brilliant show.

  8. so when are we gonna know for sure?

  9. Last year a new season was announced mid-March time, hopefully we will know then and not have to wait till the last minute

  10. can i say im scared more about the whole season finale can work like series finale .imagine a similar ending to s3 and we are like WHAT? without knowing if its going to be renewed before the finale. i just need them to have a proper ending to be tied to what we saw all these years. if the season finale WORKS as series finale what happens if we get maximum even 15 eps for next year thats what i dont get.

  11. But case of the week episodes is part of what make fringe great, making it soully mythology would be taking something away from the show.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Best case scenario? Shortened S5 (with just enough episodes to make it an even 100) and that will be that.

    I repeat: BEST CASE scenario.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Which show will get cancelled first - House or Fringe?

    ReplyDelete
  14. But if it was the final series which if we get a 5th one it probably would be then really all the mythology aspect would need to be wrapped up.

I mean don't get me wrong I like the case of the week but would prefer to get answers

  15. Peter Roth seemed pretty optimistic about wanting a season 5. My fingers are crossed too!

    ReplyDelete
  16. Anna Torv needs to have a word with her relatives, the Murdochs, who own Fox...

    ReplyDelete
  17. It's good to hear there are talks about it right now, may be then we'll get an answer sooner than last year!
And so the best season finale or series finale possible.
Well anyway there is still hoping here for Fringe to get renewed, so it's great news! :-)

  18. If Fringe gets a goodbye season, I will be so overjoyed that I'll cry.

Who would believe that my two favourite shows, Chuck being the other, which going by ratings should have been cancelled a long time ago get to wrap up nicely and say goodbye to their fans.

    Please happen.

  19. that's all I keep saying,. bring it back for 13 eps, finish it right and be done. I would love that.

    ReplyDelete
  20. For the sake of one show we will destroy two universes XD

  21. I wish I could upvote this comment more times

    ReplyDelete
  22. Well I'm trusting the writers about that. If they get 15 eps for next year I'm positive they'll add some brilliant season whatever is the end of s4!

    ReplyDelete
  23. The sooner the best! If the negotiations are beginning today I'm pretty sure we will not to wait too long, not till March at least.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Yeah, they said the same thing about the ending to season 3, and I can't even begin to imagine the fan-rage that would have ensued if that had been the final episode.

  25. Let's not kid ourselves.  Fringe is awesome but no one should be crossing their fingers for extra revenue coming from syndication.  Serialized shows sell very poorly into syndication.

    ReplyDelete
  26. There are truly a handful of shows that i really like, but the possibility of not having Fringe is unbearable. There is so much more to this story that they haven't tapped into....does anyone have prozac handy?

    ReplyDelete
  27. I hope they just give us a short season of mythology and tie up the show that would be great!

    ReplyDelete
  28. i would just like them to give it a proper ending. i love this show and would love for it to continue, but not at the expense of a complete story.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Pretty please...with a cherry on the top!

  30. You're overstating the serialization... It's no more or less serialized than Supernatural: A mytharc that ties into some COTW episodes, and building up the storyline as the season goes. It's also got comparable ratings, and a comparably rabid fanbase as well.

And what show is currently syndicated on TNT? Supernatural. Not saying Fringe has the same odds for sure, but don't understate them either.

    ReplyDelete
  31. It's odd, but so many think of Fringe as a serial show when only about half of any season is serialized really. I was thinking the same thing about Supernatural and how well it does on syndication....

    ReplyDelete
  32. You are actually helping to make my point.  Selling a show to one network for rock-bottom prices is a prime example of selling poorly into syndication.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Yeah, I don't understand how I "helped" make that point.

    ReplyDelete
  34. We'll just pull a David Robert Jones...hopefully without all the icky cellular disintegration.

    ReplyDelete
  35. No need to get snippy.  The point I made was that Fringe shouldn't expect big profits from syndication because of the nature of the show.  You cited Supernatural as an example to argue against the point I made. Supernatural, being similarly structured to Fringe as you pointed out, has one sale in syndication at a rather low price point.  That lack of success into the syndicated market mirrors the point I was making.  Therefore, the example you cited favors my point rather than yours.  That's what I'm saying.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Fringe, sadly. If HL wants, there'll be a last ninth season for House. FOX is struggling too much to let go a show that consistently brings at least 7 million viewers (+DVR) each week,

    ReplyDelete
  37. Sorry,I wasn't trying to be snippy...I think that I'm not getting your point at all, though.
I don't know what you mean by "That lack of success into the syndicated market mirrors the point I was making."... Does that mean that Supernatural is struggling as a syndicated show?

I barely pay attention to syndicated ratings, but from what I've read in the past, Supernatural has repeated on TNT fairly well, and in season 5 I think it boosted the ratings for a little while on the CW. I know that since it's been on TNT, it went from me being the only person I know who likes the show to almost every member of my family, and several friends and co-workers. (Of course I realize that's anecdotal info versus nielsen info...but I was just reminded of that..."Hey Wil, have you seen this show yet? It's on TNT, and it's so good!" ..."I've been watching that show for 4-5 years now.")

  38. “Worst case scenario, if this were the last aired season of Fringe…
we know what the end of this season is going to be,” EP Jeff Pinkner
recently told TVLine, ”and it can function as a series finale.”

Let's hope that this will happen at the end OF SEASON 5!!!
    *send some positive vibes*

  39. You're looking at this from the wrong perspective.  TNT is the consumer, not the seller.  Syndication is about sales for the production company that owns the show.  In this case, Warner Brothers television is the producer.  Supernatural has been available for syndication since completion of season 4.  It is now in its seventh season.  In that time, Warner Brothers has made one sale at a relatively low cost per episode to one network.  That's not a big splash in the syndication market.  The profit goes up a little when you add in the CW's deal's with Netflix and Hulu but those are package deals, not an individual sale.

  40. Got the fingers crossed, now trying to do the toes....

  41. How in the hell did I miss this post?

I must have been in another universe for a while.

  42. Fingers (or Fringes) crossed,
    Toes crossed,
    Legs crossed,
    and especially; lines crossed...

  43. I'm working on a solution right this minute. I just need some Amphilicite...

    ReplyDelete
  44. Agreed!

Worst part about the Season 4 "possible series finale" is that if  "it can serve as a possible series finale" that means that there is still story to be told after. We need that post script and the full story!

Season 5 with less episodes or less budget is a good compromise FOX and WB.
    Make it so!

  45. I really hope that they can work something out to give Fringge a 5th season, but I am not really expecting it.  Viewing figures are awful, so I can see it won't make much economic sense to continue for Fox unless it's pretty much given to them.

    ReplyDelete
  46. that is EXACTLY

    ReplyDelete
  47. This sitting and waiting is doing a great number on the nerves.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Must say that I don't like the Worst case scenario line, as it sounds like not the really ending they want for the show!

    ReplyDelete
  49. I just need some Astrid by my side :)

  50. I think I get what you mean. I don't like it :P but I get it.
