  1. That is so cool. Now if we could get everyone to watch live on Friday that would be even better *getting off my soap box*  :)

  2. I can't understand why Kitchen Nightmares is more interesting to watch LIVE than Fringe. It's beyond me. And I won't even say that everyone from that .8 should watch it live but if some of them won't and soon there is not going to be a show to watch anymore...

  3. Yes!Good news finally!
Tomorrow,I'm gonna start twitting about Fringe the moment I wake up(even if I can't watch it live myself!)

  4. 73% increase is great, but does it count as far as Fox are concerned?  Certianly a 1.9 rating for a Friday is a lot more healthy than a 1.1

  5. I hope FOX takes this into account because a) many people will be out on a Friday night, b) Fringe fans may also be Supernatural fans and c) the commercial breaks are just a nusance, isn't it much nicer to fastforward them (and yes, I know FOX wont want to hear this, especially in light of their epic fail "Remote Free TV", bless).

But yeah, a 1.9 rating is fantastic news! I was expecting to see a 73% total increase but never an 18-49 rating! Brilliant news!

  6. That is a massive increase. What does it take to get these people to sit their tushes down on a Friday night? We wouldn't be in such straits if they did. But this is still nice to see. Better than it having negligible increases.

  7. I think they relize how many viewers they lost from moving Fringe to friday, because obviously this is the reason for the high DVR rates. I really hope they'll understand during this season their mistake, and will RE-move this to thursday.

  8. So what? Nobody cares about DVR. The main reason of why shows get renewal is because of Live ratings i.e. the higher the ratings are - the more income channels get from their commercials. Now tell me what's the point in renewing a show that is being watched only in DVR where all the commercials get  skipped?

  9. This just tells you that Friday at 9:00pm is a terrible time slot.  People are either: a) out enjoying themselves or b) asleep.  Friday is a terrible night for any TV show.  Fox knows this.  They've had no success with any show in that timeslot.  That should tell you that it's not the show it's the schedule that is killing Fringe.  Move it back to Tuesday, Monday, Wednesday.  Just get it the heck off of Friday and you have a winner!

  10. The advertisers that have product placed in during the show surely do...

  11. The advertisers that have products placed in during the show surely do aka Nissan or Sprint etc.

  12. I'm pretty certain the advertisers agreed to consider +3 as part of the ratings.  So yes, this increase is good, although not as good as getting it same day.

    ReplyDelete
  13. So? How is that supposed to preclude FOX from ordering a new show which presumably will have better ratings plus the same product placement?

  14. Ah,.. you see, Fringe ratings are not good enough even for a Friday show. So I guess FOX will take a chance and drop it for the next season, unless Warner Bros. comes up with some lucrative deal.

  15. Crazy. Not too surprising. We already know it has awesome DVR numbers. You just hope to hope that it matters. h.

  16. Well, it seems that Fringe DOES keep it's audience out of KN after all. Hopefully these are beneficial. We need all the positive spin we can get.

  17. Also, who else saw LSD before anything else popped out of that blurb?

  18. The day that Networks realise the importance of DVR and online ratings is the day the world of TV becomes a better place.

  19. Well, if Fringe gets cancelled now we know which 73% to blame.

  20. I know how crappy the live numbers are but it's been a while since Fox had a scripted show on Friday that was even this good in ratings. It's specially true when you count in the DVR numbers. And they were counting them last year so I don't see why they wouldn't now. And it still could grow. Hopefully it will.
Plus I know how naiv to reason with this is but I don't think it would do good for Alcatraz or Terra Nova or even Touch if they'd just kill it without giving it a proper ending. I am aware of the bad examples but I also know that many already refuse to start a Fox show with any sci-fi relation because how all of them seems to end... I am one of those that won't even give a chance to the shows above until they have at least five seasons and seems to be safe still...

  21. Yeah. Though  I wonder if they even know or really think for even a minute that it depends on them...

Don't want to sound too negative here but I still don't think this is enough.  Its very encouraging to see good numbers like this but its the advertising revenue that matters.  Period.  The fact that there is a significant jump in the viewership of Live +3 days isn't as good as it sounds because broadcasters and advertisers know that people fast forward through commercials.  Because of this the ad messages is heavily diluted and the overall "reach" is cut heavily.  The advertisers would need to make adds that when  viewed while fast forwarding still shows its logo and/or overall ad message when a 30 second add is cut to 10 seconds.  That being the case; advertisers don't want to pay full 30 second rates for what most people will see as a 10 second static image.  The result is that Fox would press to cut their ad prices.  I love this show.  Its a fantastic show but I not very optimistic about its chances for renewal.

  23. Those numbers have to grab their attention. Hope they stay up in the coming weeks. Then they can't deny it's popular show and that they've put it in the wrong night. Don't know how much it'll help the chance of another season, but it sure can't hurt.

  24. YAY! this made me so happy :D:D

  25. Those are nice numbers but the network only cares about Live + SD, and they barely even care about that.

  26. Fringe was not doing well on Thursday night, rating wise at all. Also I can't see Fox moving a show with struggling rating to another day of the week. Fox will either keep it there on Friday night or cancel it.

    ReplyDelete
  27. While these number are great to see. The way I see it it, Fringe is a expensive scripted show, and while I doubt that Fox has any other scripted show could replay Fringe on Friday night and do better. That still leave the non-scripted shows, which would most likely bring the same number for a lot less money.

  28. While I agree with you for the most part, I have to say, that you have to put your priorities in place. By that I mean; If you are concerned about Fringe being cancelled, then watch it live and DVR Supernatural (since it's been on the air a lot longer, and since it is on the CW, it can take the hit better), if you can't do that then you honestly can't complain about Fringe's numbers. Not that I'm saying you are complaining, in case you think that's what I'm saying here.

  29. Doesn't matter which one you watch live unless you are a Nielsen family.  It actually doesn't matter when you watch on DVR unless you are a Nielsen family (and not skipping the commercials) either.

    ReplyDelete
  30. The problem is that their unscripted stuff is doing better on Fridays and it is a lot cheaper to buy.  Kitchen Nightmares is Fringe's real competition.  In the end, Chris is right.  It all comes down to how low the WB can go in their offer to FOX and still make a profit on the show themselves.  What Fringe fans really want to hear is high DVD sales (instead of high DVR numbers) and most importantly, talks about syndication.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Nah - The day that Networks figure out how to make a substantial profit out of online ratings is the day the world of TV becomes a better place.

  32. Friday is terrible day to have Fringe on. If they only left it Tuesday!!
I would love if Fox would move Fringe to Mondays! Fox have launched 4
mid-season show this season, Touch, Alcatraz, Terra Nova, The Finder. I
only way I can see it happing is if Terra Nova and the Finder get
cancel, and house get cancel has it very expensive and down rating wise.

  33. I know...We've been through this before, and I concede defeat. But that doesn't discount my point. Watching live kinda does matter even if you are not a Neilson family because you are more likely to watch commercial, and thus more likely to buy something from the sponsors. Plus setting the example for those elusive Neilson families doesn't hurt either. But all that is moot. My point is, if you love both shows (regardless of your neilson status) then you should support the one that is hurting the worst, the most. The other one can stand on its own. But it boils down to where your allegiance lies.

So basically; If he's saying that some of those 73% are Both Supernatural and Fringe fans that are DVRing Fringe and watching Supernatural live, then I say that they should swap their routine until Fringe gets back on its feet. Do you see what I mean here?

  34. You are coming from a symbolic view.  I'm coming from a practical view. Both Supernatural and Fringe are in my top 5 current TV shows.  I'm not a Nielsen family so I'm comfortable in watching Supernatural first and then Fringe later.  Occasionally I flip them but I tweet about Supernatural when I watch it and I enjoy the community I've built through that.  It enhances the episode for me.  I doubt any Nielsen family knows what I watch when or cares and the sponsors only attribute my buying their product to Fringe if I specifically e-mail them to say that I bought it because of their Fringe advertising.  (which I am happy to do by the way.)  If I became a Nielsen viewer I would absolutely watch Fringe live.  I've actually been sent a paper sweeps ballot twice early in my life.  However until Nielsen grants me membership in their club, I'm resigned to the fact that the best I can do for Fringe is to talk it up in real life, buy the DVDs, and buy episodes on iTunes.  Practically, my money going to the WB is going to do far more for the show than standing invisibly in solidarity.

  35. It's a small piece of good news...I'll take that for now.
