Dexter Producer Promises "Big Change Up" to Formula

IGN talks to Dexter EP Manny Coto about Deb's surprising new feelings, the twist that many saw coming and what's next.

At the Television Critics Association Press Tour last week, IGN TV had a chance to speak with Dexter executive producer Manny Coto (formerly an EP on FOX's 24) about this past season, which saw Dexter chase after a sadistic, apocalypse-obsessed killer and Deb discover, through therapy sessions, that she's actually in love with her adopted brother. A polarizing season for sure, which many TV critics called unsatisfying - yet Dexter still managed to wrangle up its highest ratings ever.

  1. They will have to do a lot to win my trust back and I don't think they can

  2. As much as I had misgivings about the content of last season, I REALLY want next season to get here fast.

  3. Unfortunately for fans like yourself, Dexter keeps breaking its own ratings records so the longtime fans who have serious issues with the direction and storytelling in Dexter the last few seasons don't have a lot of leverage.  There's no incentive to change the course or content of the show.

  4. With the rating going up and up for Dexter I have really concerns about
how handle the twist with Debra. This interview did not help matters!
Either he does not want give anything way or he and the writing staff
have no idea of direction for next season including how to handle twist
    with Debra.

The problem with Dexter as I see it, is that concept could be made into a
very good quality TV show over few seasons, but as it has got more
popularly, the concept has been stretched further and further to the
point which quality has gone down and down. With rating up this season
unless there a major drop in viewer or if Micheal C hall pull out, I see
Dexter getting 9 or 10 season.

  5. The show has survived past season 4 thanks to Micheal C, Hall. If they want to change the formula then return to the  original formula when Clyde Phillips was the show runner or here's a thought start amping up the show.  This s a show based on a serial killer and yet I don't get that sense when I'm watching the show. I promise you if the audience see's Dexter actually hack someone up, If we actually get to see some blood on Dexter's hands and not metaphorically we won't recoil. I want to see the show move a little faster, take a few chances and stop catering to the 12 year old,  The Middle aged "Christians" and Parents council. This is a cable show so, it should start looking like a cable show and the only way to do that is for the writers to take back their BALL'S  and start treating the lead character like he's a freaking serial killer. Oh hell! just make Dexter chase down Debra and Kill her already! get on with the show!
