Last night a rather low key and toned down Ricky Gervais hosted the Golden Globes and to the surprise of no one, cable networks cleaned house! The only network show to win was Modern Family with its 1 Award.
Maybe network TV will pay attention and stop catering to the lowest common denominator, but I doubt it.

Kudos to all the winners but a special shout out to Peter Dinklage!

The female winners were very predictable for me, but I was pretty wrong in the male section.

ReplyDeleteHE would not have been my choice but in fairness Grammar was great in Boss....That role was award show catnip just like Claire Danes' role in Homeland.
ReplyDeleteGlad Peter Dinklage & Jessica Lange both won, not sure that Kelsey Grammer deserved the win over Damian Lewis and Bryan Cranston but maybe that's jsut becasue I couldn't get into Boss at all. I agree it was a different role for him though.

ReplyDeleteI really am glad that Homeland, Claire Danes, Peter Dinklage, Modern Family and Matt LeBlanc won (for best comedy/best actor in a comedy, there really weren't many other decent nominees, it's nice that the few deserving to be here got something). Laura Dern wins for Enlightened and that's great, although I would have loved if Amy Poehler had taken the prize home, almost securing a fifth season of Parks and Recreation at the same time. Laura Linney won last year but it would have been cool with me if she had kept her title of best actress in a comedy. And Bryan Cranston NEEDED to win, but that's okay, he'll just stick with Emmys (he will win his fourth Emmy for Breaking Bad next September).
Regarding the big screen, I'm really glad Tintin won for best animated film (start making a sequel now !), Midnight in Paris for best screenplay and The Artist for their 3 Golden Globe wins (best comedy/musical, best actor for Jean Dujardin and best score), although Michel Hazanavicius should have won for best director (the best movie makes up for it). I haven't seen The Descendants yet, when it'll get released next week I definitely will go see it, it looks good. Also, I can't wait to see the "hysterical comedy", My Week With Marilyn, winner Michelle Williams looks funny as hell in it.
I would have given the Golden Globe to Jessica Chastain or Bérénice Bejo but Octavia Spencer was good, too. At first I was surprised that Scorsese won for Hugo (the movie is good, but far from being one of his best and except a few sequences the directing is not spectacular) but that sort of assured that The Artist and The Descendants would win the best motion picture prizes in drama and comedy, which they did.

Lots of premiere channels winning. Don't care. I'm still not paying a couple hundred bucks a year for HBO and Showtime just so I can watch a few shows.

ReplyDeleteCall your cable company (if you do pay for regular cable) and complain that prices are too high and you're going to switch to DirecTV or Dish, 99% of the time they will offer you some premium cable package free for 3 or 6 months or even a year.Last time I got all premium channels (except The Movie Channel) free for 12 months!

ReplyDeleteI was not THAT assertive. I was honestly going to switch to DirecTV since I would get the premiums free for 6 months if I recall. I told the Customer Service Rep that ( and that the monthly cost was cheaper)and she said they could give me the premiums free for a year.
I actually like Comcast and don't need to switch. But they have a kiosk inside Best Buy. I was able to sweet talk the rep when I ordered our DVR, so I maybe I just need to find her again and plead. The only shows I would watch, really, are Homeland, Shameless, and Boardwalk Empire (maybe), so it's not a dire necessity yet.

I think home girl from the Hour should have won for best actress in a mini-series. Kate Winslet should not have won for that category especially considering she was nominated last year for the same exact award!
ReplyDeleteKelsey deserved the win for Boss because his performance was on fire! I like breaking bad it was one of my favorite show, but the show is slowing a bit and Bryan Creston can't win every freaking year, his head is already big enough.
