2011-2012 ratings round up, Part II - The CW Diaries

15 Jan 2012

Hello. I continue my ratings round-up of all the ratings of the first part of the 2011-2012 season. I started yesterday with CBS, and today I'll focus on a network it is closely related to, since Time Warner and CBS painfully gave birth to it five and a half years ago by killing off their older children (respectively UPN and WB) : The CW.

If CBS is the authoritarian aged father of the family and Time Warner is the estranged mother (providing alimony every May), The CW certainly is the young, innocent daughter who's actually 26 but acts like a 16 year old (and Showtime is the badass uncle with all the cool stories).

Until the end of the week, I'll be posting the ratings of every single show having been on the air on every major network (plus a few cable channels as well) over the past 4 months.

I started collecting the data roughly two months ago, and I thought I'd compile the figures, try and make them easy to read for you to witness the evolution of your favorite shows week after week (personally I like that and I didn't find such a list compiling everything so I thought I'd make one), and add completely neutral pictures representing in no way the shows that I think are worth watching, wink wink.

These are always the final ratings that I got from TVbythenumbers (they're usually posted them 12 to 30 hours after the preliminary ratings). And I didn't include real TV.

Part I - CBS : Killer at Procedural Land
Part II - The CW Diaries
Part III - Once Upon a Time, ABC had good ratings...
Part IV - The new girl is FOXy
Part V - NBC or the story of the peacock on fire
Part VI - AMC and FX, complex ratings on basic cable
Part VII - Showtime and HBO, or where the ratings don't matter (or do they ?)

  1. I mean, CW numbers are always low, I know. But I can't believe more people watch 90210 than GG. And Nikita does better than both. On a Friday. And yet, Nikita is the one with cancellation fears. IDEK.

    Thanks for the data!

  2. Supernatural CW's third best show, with no promotion and on a Friday. Some could argue that it is the CW's second best show considering it gets around the same 18-49 and only a few hundred thousand less viewers than Secret Circle who has the highest rated show and was created specifically to capitalize on vampire diaries lead-in.

  3. Jenni Lou , total viewers don't matter. Nikita is in danger because it has the lowest 18-49 rating on the CW. It's that simple.

Thanks for this, Bunky Bunk. Always a relief to see how safe SPN is.

  4. hi hart of dixie ep 3 & 4 is missing }:

  5. Ringer sure is struggling to find an audience given how much it was promoted and re-aired constantly.

  6. So bizarre to see so many poorly rating series on one network, but welcome to the CW I guess. XD

Fans may bicker and whine fairly often about the CW, but all I can say is that fans of any CW show should be cheering for the CW daily since on any other network most of the CW series would have been cancelled after 1 or 2 years. Say what you will about the CW, but they give their shows a chance to mature (and perhaps become overly ripe) before canceling them!

  7. I'm praying Nikita doesn't get canceled. It's so great

  8. that's the good thing about CW

  9. More and more, I am suspecting that they are on a different ratings scale, they have to be more on par with basic cable stations like FX, I wonder how much commercials go for during TVD hour? It seems like that one show is keeping them afloat.

  10. I really hope Hart of Dixie receives a second season. It is easily the best new show on The CW this season.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Nikita isnt doing better than either actually.

Based on the CW's track record 3 shows are likely to get the chop at seasons end at the moment those 3 are NIKITA, GOSSIP GIRL and HART OF DIXIE. By seasons end I expect Nikita and Gossip Girl to still be the lowest rated shows on the network but the 3rd show to be a close race.

90210 was the CW's 4th highest rated scripted show of the Fall only just, switching places with SPN at 5th at times. HOD is on the up and closing the gap on both these shows, Ringer on the downward slide and narrowing the gap between 3rd and 4th/5th/6th place.

Even with DVR Nikita averages only a 0.8  still the lowest rated show on the network.

GG isnt doing much better but it makes more money. My guess is both will be cancelled.

The ratings race is going to be very interesting this mid season.

  12. I am no teenager, in my 70s, but I watch more shows on CW than any other network.  Supernatural and TVD are my favorite shows on TV, but also watch Hart of Dixie, Nikita, Secret Circle and even thought the acting is awful, Ringer. I keep hoping will see more of Jason Dohring and with Misha Collins coming on, the acting will pick up.

  13. on any other network I dont think a single CW show would have ever made it past pitching the initial scrip let alone made it to air.

    ReplyDelete
  14. ANTM earns the network the most money in terms of ad revenue, TVD is second and GG third. I believe TVD is somewhere around 40-50 grand per 30 second slot. Dont quote me on those numbers I believe there is an article posted on this site in regards to CW ad revenue.

  15. Thanks so much!  It's always crazy to see how low some of the CW's numbers actually are, and mind-boggling to see them all in one place.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I don't feel so certain of that. I think Hart of Dixie stands a good chance of renewal. But the demo numbers certainly make things murkier and Nikita certainly isn't doing so well with those.

CW is so hard to predict. They garner such low rating across the board; there's really no telling how they decide what stays and what goes. Guess time will tell....

    ReplyDelete
  17. Can't understand why anyone says Nikita is doing the worst have they even looked at the numbers. ITS A FRIDAY SHOW

Because looking at this Nikita looks way better then Gossip Girl. And shows getting 0.6 on mondays and tuesday is worse then shows getting that demo on a friday

Nikita is the best show on CW and it is finally a show that gets praised by critics and the CW can be proud off. In fact it is the only show that has recieved an EMMY nomination for ANY CW show. It would be the right thing to keep it. Because anyone can see if they started a new show on fridays or moved any other show there it would do worse or the same as Nikita yet Nikita is closer to a syndication deal then the new shows.

And i think anyone knows they will never get a new TVD,SPN or Smallville ever again just look at The Secret Circle it is doing worse then Nikita did after TVD

Nikita is the closed show to one of those 3 shows

  18. "Supernatural" neither gains nor loses viewers as time goes on. Seems it's within a tenth every week, and it's certainly no worse off than anything else on the CW. If both Padalecki and Ackles are willing, there's no reason the show shouldn't continue for a couple more seasons.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Wow TVD has been in first place every episode.

    ReplyDelete
  20. if gossip girl ends, i end.

    ReplyDelete
  21. except Gossip girl can do syndacation and does enough in W18-34 to be renewed and thats what we should be looking for Gossip Girl it does almost the same as Hart of Dixie in W18-34 and if One Tree Hill got a final season with low ratings last year i think Gossip Girl will too and TvLine has it as a safe bet for renewal on there 2012 renwal prospects and has 90210 as cancelled plus One Tree Hill is ending so thats 1 less show they will have to cancel here's my predictions for the renewals

    Renewed:

    Gossip Girl (Final Season Announcement)
    Hart of Dixie
    90210
    America's next Top Model
    Vampire Diaries
    Secret Circle
    Supernatural

    Cancelled:

    Nikita
    One Tree Hill
    Ringer
    Remodeled
    Framed

    ReplyDelete
  22. Hart of Dixie is a guarantee for renewal at this point a 0.8 A18-49 last episode is on targer with the Average of The CW and is also 0.5 W18-34 above CW average it achieved a 1.7 W18-34 on 1.09

    ReplyDelete
  23. 4th best actually it gets beat by Secret Circle

here's the top shows of The CW in A18-49

    1. Vampire Diaries
    2. Secret Circle
    3. Hart of Dixie
    4. Supernatural/90210
    5. Ringer
    6. Gossip Girl
    7. Nikita

however in W18-34 it ranks like this

    1. Vampire Diaries
    2. Hart of Dixie
    3. 90210
    4. Gossip Girl
    5. Secret Circle
    6. Ringer
    7. Supernatural
    8. Nikita

    ReplyDelete
  24. Supernatural has received 3 Emmy nominations so Nikita is not the only one.

    ReplyDelete
  25. A18-49 is the biggest rating as

Hart of Dixie- (Good amount of promotion and on a Monday)
.81 average 18-491.74 million viewer average.75  average 18-49 (No promotion and on a Friday at 9pm)1.80 million viewer average

Also want to point how Supernatural's 18-49 rating last episode had a 38 percent increase in 3 Day DVR viewing.

So the reason why I consider Supernatural at-least the 3rd best show (arguably the 2nd best) is because if it was on any other night, It would be. I like many others to subscribe to the Friday Factor and the DVR numbers have proved the Friday Factor. Here are the Live+7 DVR for the first ten episodes of the season.

First number is what it ranked in terms of other shows in 18-49 percentage gain.

    1st 63% Sept 19th-25th2nd 57% Sept 26th-Oct 2nd5th 57% Oct 3rd-Oct 9th25th 37% Oct 10th-Oct 16th2nd 50% Oct 17th-Oct 23rd1st 71% Oct 24tht-Oct 30th20th 37% Oct 31st-Nov 6th5th 50% Nov 7th-13th 4th 57% Nov 14th-20th
    Nov 21st-Nov 27th no episode4th 57% Nov 28th-Dec 5th

As you can see only two times has it been below 50 percent and only two times has it been out of the Top 5. This episode that aired last week will probably hit the 50+ percent mark as the Live+3 DVR was 38 percent.

  26. Can I ask if compared to last year, Supernatural ratings are up or down? Thank you.

  27. The CW is dying a slow and painful death. Fact is, that they want especially the group between 18 and 49 to watch, but don't give them what they'd like to see anymore.
GossipGirl was such a great show once upon a time. But instead of character developement and continuing, sense-making storylines they allowed the producers to change the writers each season and so it ended in this big fat mess that it is right now. That's a pity.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Supernatural doesn't do that much better than Nikita.I defently don't think It should be considered safe.
It's hard to predict what the new regime will bring back besides The Vampire Diaries but based on all the advertisments I keep seeing for Gossip Girl I will make bet It comes backeven If only a final 13 episode
season.Out of 4 shows I watch on the CW(Vampire Diaires,Nikita,Ringer,Heart of Dixie) only Vampire Diaries Is sure bet to come back.If I had to place a bet on the others I would say Heart of Dixie If new episodes hold up like before.I have strong feeling Ringer will get axed at end of season. The fact they pushed the return till end of the month Is bad sign. The CW Is crazy If they think new shows will do
better than Nikita and Supernatural on Friday nights. The CW was stupid not to try to devolp show that could fill Smallville's place.People also need to realize Supernatural could also get the axe with Nikita.
The CW has several pilot scripts In the works so If they get picked up you could have a lot of axing.
