James Hibberd posted an incredibly accurate list of items that need fixing if Terra Nova is renewed...
Terra Nova might still get saved from extinction. No decision has been made on picking up the ambitious dino drama, but Fox met with the show’s studio chiefs last week to talk about potentially giving the series a second round. Below, we have our six ideas for how the show can best earn a pickup.
Terra Nova has been a self starter in the ratings on Mondays and its family friendly nature makes it an easy pitch to advertisers. Yet the show’s overall adult demo ratings have disappointed, and sources say the network has been creatively unsatisfied with the show, as well. But in an odd way, some of Terra Nova‘s problems have worked in its favor — everybody involved with the project agrees there’s room for improvement and, therefore, possible ratings growth.
The network’s verdict on whether to renew the show is expected by mid January since Terra Nova‘s extensive use of special effects require the production to get back in the writers room soon if they’re going to stay on schedule to map out stories in time for fall. If renewed, expect Fox’s order will be along the lines of the first season’s 13 episodes, not a full 22 like most other shows.
So far, the discussion has focused on ways to make the show better, and the compelling two-hour finale was a great step in the right direction. Here’s our six suggestions for making Terra Nova a must-watch show for season two:
1. Age Up
2. Make Sense
3. Fear and Wonder
4. Deepen the Characters
5. Less CGI, Better CGI
6. Focus on Your Strength: Jason O'Mara

Great article and I could not agree more.
ReplyDeleteAll season long I felt like it was written for preteens or by preteens. At times it is just nonsensical and completely not grounded in reality.
If the could have done half of these this year it could have been an enjoyable season instead of lackluster and downright ridiculous at times.
1-yes
ReplyDelete2-yes

6-yes
I whole heartily agree!
Yes i agree with everything you said and what the article said! It could be done and become the exciting show we were waiting for!
ReplyDeleteI was thinking more 'why would you', than 'how to', save the series. :P
ReplyDeleteI say ditch Terra Nova, then focus the money saved on it back into Fringe, and move Fringe back to a better night.
ReplyDeleteI know this is unrealistic, but honestly Terra Nova is sophomoric at best, while Fringe deserves its final season to finish its awesome mythology.
PLEASE FOX!!!!!!!!!
It's one of my favourite series at the moment. Not because of the dinos, or the CGI, or the vastness of the place - but because of the characters. Point #6 is HUGE. I love Jim Shannon/Jason O'Mara. He is a great actor and makes you want to be there with him in the story (no matter how average the plotlines are).
ReplyDeleteI agree on both counts!
ReplyDeleteIn all honestly I did not find one element of Terra Nova exceptional over the course of Season 1, and rarely did it hit the 'great' or even just 'very' good' marks.
I'm an O;Mara fan since I first saw him on Berkley Square and even more so he crossed the pond for Band of Brothers and to replaced Gil Bellows on The Agency, but he is wasted on Terra Nova. The writing is just so predictable and flat.
Ha!
ReplyDeleteI was too, but I liked the points he made. If they do renew I hope they take his advise at least.
Great article, and could not agree more on this.
ReplyDeleteJust do it like a Jurassic Park-esque series, with a great sense of danger and risk, and make the dinosaurs play a bigger and more menacing role in the series. Don't attempt to make it like a Stargate series.
ReplyDeleteGreat points but I don't think that it is going to be renewed.
ReplyDeleteThat's very much in line with my thoughts about Terra Nova. Age up is a very good advice!
