Supernatural - Misha Collins Interview
6 Dec 2011
SupernaturalReps for the show informed us that they couldn't give specific details about Collins' return or which other episodes the actor would be appearing in, so AOL TV went straight to the source. Though Collins admitted that he couldn't reveal much, he would offer one tantalizing hint about what fans can expect when he makes his much-anticipated return ...
"I can confirm that the character of Castiel is returning to 'Supernatural,'" he told us. "I'm not supposed to talk about any details, but I will tell you this: The character is coming back somewhat changed. I'm not going to tell you everything, but I will tell you that the "new" Castiel no longer wears undergarments."

*mind boggles @ no underwear* :o
ReplyDeleteI'm so excited for this! Cannot wait to see how he returns.
ReplyDelete"no longer wears undergarments"A baby maybe?
ReplyDeleteOne should never believe everything Misha says, he's got a wicked sense of humour.
ReplyDeleteGald to know that Castiel is back in some form or another though. I did wonder if they were just going to have Misha back as Jimmy.
This announcement made me one of the happiest persons on earth :D
ReplyDeleteNoooo! Oh god, they are bringing him back. Ugh. Why can't he stay dead??
ReplyDeleteI have to be honest and say that this news makes me really unhappy.
ReplyDeleteSeason seven was coming along so well, and we had Sam and Dean back together in brotherly harmony.
There was hardly any fan bickering, and now it's going to start all over again just for the sake of having Misha Collins in two or three episodes.
I really think it's all a bad idea.
The writers should just have left well alone
hahaha typical Misha.. thanks so much!!! I absolutely can't wait
ReplyDeleteI think poor Jimmy has to be gone.. is there any way he could have survived the onslaught of all those Leviathan? if it killed Cas, it probably got to Jimmy first
ReplyDeleteSo happy to see Cass back, but I'm actually missing Bobby much more right now.
ReplyDeleteI disagree with just about every single sentence in this post. I don't think season 7 was coming along well at all. I've found this to be the least enjoyable of all seasons for a variety of reasons - it's boring, the Leviathans are NOT scary, too much Bobby (I like Bobby but in smaller does), too little insight into Sam, a revisit of the Dean I like least in the series (the judgmental, self-righteous one), problems with the writing, and lastly, Cas's storyline being cut off before it was properly finished.
ReplyDeleteSam and Dean have not been in brotherly harmony all season. They're not at each other's throats, but they don't really feel like one unit either, the way they did in earlier seasons.
There's been plenty of fan bickering. Not sure where you've been hanging out. ;-)
But I guess we all have different taste and one change isn't going to make everyone happy.
I'm missed Collins as Castiel. I'm not sure how successfully the writers can return him to the series, even for just a few episodes, but it'll be fun to see what they do with it.
ReplyDeleteHappy to hear he`s coming back, but "no undergarments" makes no sense to me yet^^
ReplyDeleteYes, this. :) I'd rather they not bring him back. I like the way we're going right now. (Not that what I think matters, I know I'm very much In The Minority.
ReplyDeleteWe can only agree to differ here, because I prefer Sam and Dean as a team without the third wheel, and if Sam has had less screen-time and story line up till now , when Misha returns he is going to have even less.
ReplyDeleteNumbers can't lie, 40 minutes divided by two make 20 but divided by three make 13.
I would much rather have Bobby as the boys back-up in this case.
A lot of story can be told in 20 minutes, or 13 for that matter. Multiply that by 23 episodes in a season and that's far more than enough time. The problem has been that the ratio hasn't been split 20/20. It's been more like 35/5. I expect with the addition with Cas, it will be more like 30/5/5, with Dean being 30. If they're serious about making an attempt at telling Sam's story in the second half, maybe it will be 25/10/5, with Sam being 10.
ReplyDeletePerhaps the majority of fans who want Castiel back are more vocal, but the ratings for Supernatural are keeping steady so there must be a silent majority who like the show as it is, even without Misha Collins. :-)
ReplyDeleteOr there's been a majority who would prefer Cas come back but aren't in the habit of quitting the show every time they don't get everything they want.
ReplyDeleteThat could be true. Unfortunately TPTB tend to listen to the more vocal fans... and the people who want Castiel are probably some of the loudest in the fandom.
ReplyDeleteWell, from some of the posts that I have been reading here and there that's exactly the impression that I have been given; that If Castiel doesn't come back they are not going to watch the show any more!
ReplyDeleteI will continue to watch the show even if they do bring Castiel back, although I won't be happy with the writers' decision, just as I am sure you have been watching all this time that Castiel has been absent.
Everyone has their favourite character and I suppose it's only normal and that's why the writers should not listen to anyone but just go with their own thing.
ReplyDeleteI mean it would be just impossible to please everyone anyway,
I am for Team Winchester because that's the reason I fell in love with the show, the fascinating relationship between the brothers and their world, and the addition of Castiel has never changed my preference :-)
"Well, from some of the posts that I have been reading here and there
ReplyDeletethat's exactly the impression that I have been given; that If Castiel
doesn't come back they are not going to watch the show any more!"
On this board? I can only recall two or three from around the time of the Character Cup. Most of the "I'm not watching anymore" comments that I saw came from die-hard Dean fans who felt that Dean's storyline was tied into to the myth arc enough for their taste. Personally I've found myself flipping over to Fringe a lot this season because I think it's a higher quality show right now (for all the reasons I posted elsewhere on this thread), but I caught SPN online afterward.
Mixed feelings about this. I'm always happy to see Misha on the show, but I would have preferred him to return as LeviaCas rather than Castiel.
ReplyDeleteHe's joking. He makes comments like that all of the time on twitter.
ReplyDeleteYAY! Cass is coming back! I coldn't be happier *__*
ReplyDeleteMore than likely Castiel will be his Angelic self since he has yet to truly redeem himself in Dean's or Sam's eyes. This will be interesting, if the Leviathans gleaned information about the boys from his mind, what did he learn from the Leviathans?
ReplyDeleteSeason 7 is amazing but i'm ok with Cas coming back, his character needed closure.
ReplyDeleteyeah right.... fringe season 4.... lol
ReplyDeletedemoted to a cupid? his grace had to go somewhere right? and no undergarments required.
ReplyDeletea talking dog? Misha would still be needed to voice AllDogsGoToHeaven!Cas and no undergarments required.
RoboCar instead of RoboAngel? He possesses the Impala and officially and literally becomes the third wheel. and no undergarments required.
hmmm.....the mind boggles
Maybe he's shacked up with Meg.
ReplyDeleteI'm going to be completely honest here and this my opinion so don't shout at me if you disagree.
ReplyDeleteHonestly: I've found it really difficult to watch Season 7 it just hasn't clicked with me at all. I'm not pulled in, and yes I wasn't too happy with 'Death by Lake' but I have always thought they needed a season where it's just Dean & Sam.. but again they seem to be getting along too well, if that makes sense.
When I heard of Misha/Castiel's return I was happy because if they are planning on killing him off at the end it should been done properly and not by him walking into a lake. Something memorable and amazing. But again it's a wait and see thing and if it's done properly I will be happy either way.
Now the Leviathans ... Pretty weak if you ask me again it's that lack of pull. Regardless I will watch to the end because it might be one of those... all questions will be answered and I've reached the mid-way point so gonna carry on watching.
For goodness' sake, Misha... he's perfected the art of tantalising glimpses, hasn't he!
ReplyDeleteHere's hoping for LeviaCas. Castiel deserves a really epic death.
ReplyDeleteCastiel is one of my favorite characters on the show, so I'm thrilled to hear he's coming back, though I wouldn't mind a little more LeviaCas. I hope they bring hims back for a little closure and maybe some redemption. I thought the season started off really strong, but has gotten weaker. I like the way the relationship has been developed between Sam and Dean this season, and it is always great to get a healthy dose of Bobby, but I just don't find the Leviathans compelling villains. The were cool right up until you found out their weakness was scrubbing bubbles--I mean, really?! Oh, and I want the Impala back! Asap!
ReplyDeleteCas coming back just makes my day. He broke Sam's wall and wanted to fix it but was much to weak, so he can come back and fix Sam. He was not my loveable Angel at the end of S6 and start of 7, so he needs to be redeemed in the guys eyes. I will stay with SPN until the bitter end and yes some of the eps I hate..(anything with Ghostfacers), but as a whole my DVDs are very well used. In fact thinking about buying them all on blu-ray as my DVDs are usually loaned out when I want to watch.
ReplyDeleteI couldn't disagree more--Cas needs to live and be redeemed. Like Dean said he's like a brother. Neither Cas or Bobby detract from the boys...instead they both support and amplify them thru interaction.
ReplyDeleteSome thoughts about the return of Cas … First of all, I’m assuming it is actually Cas
ReplyDeletereturning, and that Misha of all people knows the difference between the character
of Cas, a leviathan that looks like Cas, and Jimmy. I don’t want Cas to return just to die, and I
certainly don’t want him to be brought back to die to save the Winchesters. One thing that I liked about Supernatural is
that the world is much bigger than Sam and Dean. There are other more powerful forces with
rules that sometimes clash with Sam and Dean’s objectives. And one of the things that I valued about Cas
was that he wasn’t another hunter with a similar point of view. He had a broader point of view, and while he
would die for the Winchesters, his main objectives were usually about the
bigger picture. Being an angel, his
interest was often getting the angels on the right track, after they were
abandoned by God and started acting out.
At first this meant figuring out if the apocalypse really was god’s will,
and fighting to stop it when he decided it wasn’t. Then he believed free will was the answer and
introduced that concept to Heaven.
Finally, he decided God needed to be replaced and the angels needed a
firm hand. I think Cas’s storyline has
to end with saving the angels and getting them back on the right track, now
that God’s not there to lead them.
Whether that means they need souls, or something else, I don’t know.
Second thing is Cas needs to face what he’s done – killing
his friends and fellow angels, crashing Sam’s wall (not just what that means to
Dean, but what it means to Sam), and letting loose the Leviathan. Cas needs to try to make amends for
these. I’m not advocating that Sam get
an instant fix, but Sam’s character needs to move forward, and the way the
story’s been written, it’s unbelievable that Sam will ever get past this
without some kind of supernatural intervention.
Yes, he seems to be coping, but he’s still fragile, and we can’t have
Sam stay in this state for much longer.
I don’t think Cas should have an easy solution for fixing Sam because he’s
not God anymore, and when he was an angel without purgatory soul power, he said
he couldn’t fix Sam. But I’d like to see
Cas really care about what he did to Sam and work with Sam on improving his
situation.
I have loved this show from the start, but it just got better with Castiel.
ReplyDeletePerfect comment.
ReplyDeleteIm suprised at the number of people who arent happy cas is coming back. No one complained when he had a huge part before he died and it seemed as if everyone has been begging for Misha to come back. I love Cas and he needs to come back, I cried when he left and we need his humor. Plus if bobby is leaving then the brothers have no one else to help them. Everyone else is dead.
ReplyDeleteHardly any fan bickering? I'm sorry to be rude, but in what bubble were you living this past months? It was the time that had MORE fan bickering exactly because Cas was gone, so almost every fan was absolutely full of rage. I want to live in your non-fan bickering buble with you.
ReplyDeleteFor me, all the people complaining are the same rabid "Team Only Dean and Sam" fans that adores the show when it focuses ONLY on the two brothers even if it becames pathetic and extremely uncreative
ReplyDeleteThere's a strong anti-angel sentiment on this board. These people for the most part want Bobby, and other human friends, to live. I like the angels, and Cas, myself, but I often feel like a minority here.
ReplyDeleteI dont have anything against Cas or Misha and I understand that the show cant go back to just Sam and Dean all the time but that doesn't mean the writers have to bring back past characters for the boys to interact with. Whats wrong with them bringing in new blood instead of Cas/Misha?
ReplyDeleteThe angel story is tired and old we had 3 seasons of it and 3 seasons of just Sam and Dean before that-except it wasn't just Sam and Dean there were brilliant supporting characters well written and appropriately used. If the writers can move away from same old same old for a minute then maybe we could get some decent NEW support characters to add to the show and enhance the Winchester's story.
I dont want ti to be all Sam and Dean all the time but that doesn't mean I want it to be Cas/Misha to be the one to help fill the void.
I'm thrilled Misha/Cas is coming back. I will never understand why people feel that having side characters on SPN is a bad thing. Why it detracts from the show. Side characters are an important element of television; you can't have main characters exist in a vaccuum. I've never been in another fandom that wanted all their side characters to be gone, or where you were considered a bad fan for liking them. In fact, often times the side characters are the most beloved. I mean, I love Sam and Dean. I love Sam and Dean's relationship. But I don't think having characters like Cas and Bobby and Crowley and even characters like Lisa (as poorly handled as she was) detracts from the show. And I certainly don't think that it detracts from Sam and Dean's relationship.
ReplyDeleteLots of people complained when Cas was part of the show - mainly because there was a feeling (not IMO totally unjustified) that he detracted from the focus of the show being Dean and Sam, and disrupted their relationship. I think the latter was particularly true in s4 when Cas and Ruby were clearly introduced to pull the boys away from each other.
ReplyDeleteI don't mind Cas, but am pretty indifferent to his presence / absence in the show. However there are many who feel much stronger, and certainly plenty of people who didn't like Cas and resented what they saw as his negative impact on Dean and Sam's relationship.
off course they don't detract but some of them don't enhance either.
ReplyDeleteWhen was the last time a character was introduced to add to Sam's character develpment, to enhance him, to expand his world to beyond just his brother? Though the writers dont mind adding characters to help assassinate Sam's character when they need to. Ruby? Amy?
I stand by my previous comments that the show doesnt need to keep bringing back dead or past characters to help it stay fresh and interesting, what it needs is new exciting ones that help push the story forward. Bringing Cas back is just flogging an old dying horse.
I disagree that Castiel detracts from the show. But I will agree that Sam needs some characters all his own. The reason I will never think Castiel detracts is because I love the fact that it gives Dean a friend, and in their line of work that's rare. I would love for Sam to have something similar. Part of the problem with Sam is that he gets all the female characters to interact with and they are almost always evil. Even Becky, who isn't really a villain, is still not a great person, what with the love potion thing.
ReplyDeleteI just read that Jim Beaver has just booked a new arc of episodes on Justified.
ReplyDeleteRead what you will into that, but it's probable that all the Castiel fans will be happy to have him in the place of Bobby should that mean that he dies.:-(
I LOVED Castiel and the Angel arc, in fact the only time I don't care for an ep is when Ghostfacers are in it..can not stand them. I am Team Supernatural, love both Sam & Dean, will miss Bobby greatly if he leaves. I can watch the same ep several times and come away with a different meaning/thought about it..love this series. So chris you are NOT alone in the Angel love.
ReplyDeleteI thought the angels were fun. They tried to take over the show for a while, but I think we're past that now. And most are not more powerful than other side characters like Crowley, the witch couple from earlier this season, the gods who keep popping up, and Death.
ReplyDeleteyeah he's booked himself at least 2 episode with an option to be brought back for more, I think there might have been mention of the possibility of a 7 episode arc. While that doesnt mean that Bobby wont be back at all it does decrease the number of episodes he'll be in during the second half of this season.
ReplyDeleteYou are unfairly representing things here Leticia. You talk about 'Team only D&S' as if they were some odd, tiny subset of the fandom. The vast majority of SPN fans love the show for what it is; a show about 2 brothers who would do anything for each other. That doesn't mean there can only be those 2 characters, but they and their relationship are the focus.
ReplyDeleteThe writers, producers, and (most importantly) Jared and Jensen emphasise this at every opportunity. So fans that look for and enjoy the brotherly dynamic in the show are not a minority. What you describe would account for most SPN fans. Of course within that there are people who do and don't like Cas, prefer one brother to the other etc. But loving Sam and Dean's relationship is at the heart of the appeal of the show, so enjoying that is hardly unusual.
I don't agree that the show becomes 'pathetic and uncreative' when it just focusses on the brothers. I suspect this is one of those occasions when 'not what I want to see' gets labelled as 'poor quality'.
You have forgotten something very important Julia, but then so do many others so you are not alone. Cas was Sam's friend too.
ReplyDeleteI personally felt that the way Cas was portrayed in the show most of the time (I'm excluding early s5 and some bits of s4) did not detract from the show, or take away from the key relationship between the brothers, and I thought he was a welcome addition to the show. However - and no doubt I will get some stick for saying this - I feel that some of Cas's fans DID detract from the show and certainly from the online fandom experience.
They IMO saw more in the relationship between Cas and Dean than was EVER shown on screen, and wanted the show to focus on and emphasise this relationship far more than was ever going to happen because that wasn't what the writers were going for. Their very partial take on things, their negativity about Sam (as the - in their view - undeserving recipient of Dean's affections when it should have been poor, unappreciated, loyal Cas), and their dissatisfaction with the direction things took (ie that pesky insistence by the writers that Sam was the most important person to Dean) affected how the show was seen by others and the level of negativity on the boards.
I should emphasise that I am not tarring ALL Cas fans with this brush, but there are some, and they have been very vocal, so have made a lot more noise than their numbers would justify.
I am loving season 7. It has been my favourite start to the season since s3. Great stuff!
ReplyDeleteI like the Leviathan's. Their more modern way of operating; taking over the IDs of powerful people, tracing credit cards and aliases rather than using location spells, using science to make the population compliant, are all great ideas and a fresh take on the usual style of SPN bad guys.
We had been told that this year they wanted Sam & Dean to be without help, so I was thinking maybe Bobby wakes up but does not know he is a hunter, so no help to the guys, or will stay in a coma till the end of season. Really don't want him gone from SPN.
ReplyDeleteWhen I am trying to get someone interested in SPN I tell them it is about FAMILY. Family that just happens to be hunters of the supernatural, but always family first. That is what I love about the show....just no Ghostfacers PLEASE. LOL
ReplyDeleteWell said and I remember back the look of awe on Sam's face when he first met Castiel, great acting by Jared. I want Cas to come back to help heal the damage he did to Sam, he told Dean he would fix him but was to weak, this will be his chance. I just want my good, clueless(think Pizza Man) Castiel back. I know Misha has said he will be different, am hoping that means not the deceitful Cas at the end of S6.
ReplyDeleteI really loved the angels too, Gabriel and Zach alone were synonymous of awesome episodes, so funny original and plot-wise interesting !
ReplyDeleteThe characters of Anna and Michael were great too at the beginning, it's a pity they scr** them up at their last appearance. Etc etc...
I'm not even going to try to develop about Castiel, just saying that his MANY sides/faces are something that a fictional character lacks too often usually, and here we have it, and so well played by Misha, it's criminal not to take advantage of it....
Basically, you're not alone (I feel like Boeface now), and I'm a bit annoyed when I see some people complaining at the deus-ex the angels were, when we still have like you pointed all those gods, and levis, and ultra-powerful witches... too much of them really.
OH MY GOD.
ReplyDeleteI don't get why you people are actually COUNTING how many time the characters are getting o_O
Especially because I just rather see them all together, as the family they are. It shouldn't be a competition about who gets screentime !
It' should be them/the family (and I don't wanna hear that "Cas and Bobby are not blood related to the Winchesters so, it should be just the brothers"... thank you) against the supernatural, and not each of them having their own self-rightgeous failure/issues etc...
A bit of internal angst and clash between the characters because of their personalities okay, but this is just too much and the plot is neither coherent nor original if it's stay in this road.
I'd love to see more focus on Sam and Cas's relationship. Given their similar arcs and the conflict with Cas having broken Sam's wall, there's a lot of potential for a complex, conflicted friendship that could do a lot for character development. But when Cas says he wants to redeem himself to Dean (doesn't acknowledge that he hurt Sam more) and Sam doesn't even acknowledge Cas's death (all conversations about Cas since ep 1 have been between Dean and Bobby), then I have little faith that this relationship will ever be explored in any meaningful way.
ReplyDeleteI was being a little facetious in my response about the time breakdowns for each character, and was talking more about the balance of focus on telling the character's story, rather than counting minutes. With such a small cast and a long season, screen time isn't the issue. It's the quality in how that time is used.
ReplyDeletewe'll have to see, maybe he'll just slip in a coma for a lot of episodes 'til the boys found a solution to help him. In season 4 Jim shot about 10 episodes of Harper's Island, he was in less SPN, but still came once in a while
ReplyDeleteWhat I like about the Leviathans is how they don't act ''I know I,m gonna win its my destiny so there's no chances anything can happen'' and all. Its about time some monsters are hunting down the boys, tracking their credits cards, putting the polices after them was a good move to pin them down :) Sure they,re confident, it wouldn't be fun to see a monsters all shy and scare^^;...but they're organise and now the boys can be creative from time to time
ReplyDeleteI agree, instead of just a spell or magic gun or knife, they will have to use their brains and I for one am looking forward to it.
ReplyDeleteHere I agree ;)
ReplyDeleteReally? I have thoroughly enjoyed the season so far. The boys are not where they need to be but they are getting better. Sera said it would be most of the season doing so before the season started. The characters were changed so much during the apocalypse and season 6, it will take time to bring back what they had. You can't rush it and make it right. The Cas isn't really over in my opinion. There's been less Bobby then before, but there were things between Bobby and the boys that had to be clarified, like why Dean is feeling more pain over the loss of Bobby then he did John. A lot reasons were given in the last episode. Give it time. Good story telling takes time
ReplyDeleteGlad to know that our 'Cas' is finally coming back in the second half of season 7...I knew he will have to come back because he has to finish what he started -- I mean the 'leviathans' ..it was him who release them and I guess that he will be the one to finish those ugly black goos levias at the end of season 7 ...!! I miss Cas so much .. i'm so happy that he will be back to help our boys to make amends ..and also he needs to heal Sam after what he did to him ...we just have to wait and see what's in store for Cas...
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to see what happen to Bobby ..he can't die .. they better not kill our ' uncle Bobby' too !!! Please Sera don't kill Bobby cause our boys need him as their ' father figure'.....
