Supernatural - Midseason Polls - Part 5

27 Dec 2011

As we head out of the emoangst fest that is season 5, I heave a sigh of relief only to find that choosing episodes in season 6 isn't always easy either. Besides round 3, there are no easy answers today. I do however toss 2, count 'em, two votes to Dabb & Loflin creations, the only time I've ever liked their writing. Of course Dean and Sam weren't in one of them much so that makes sense. Thanks to everyone who has voted and commented. This is the penultimate round so tomorrow will be the last of the preliminaries until the summer hellatus. Enjoy! Don't forget to add what other polls you would like to see for the remainder of winter hellatus. We've got to have something to keep us busy! :-)

If you haven't voted for rounds 2-5, there is still time. Round 2 ends tomorrow night. You still have a little time for round 3 and round 4.

The plan: We will run the contest to see where episodes will rank over winter hiatus and the early part of summer hiatus. The top 100 episodes will be ranked by how they do in this contest. The bottom 49 episodes will go head to head to see which ones make it into the contest. The reason for this is that the brackets only work with 128 episodes. This will still allow each episode to go head to head to determine the Best Supernatural Episode.

Unlike the actual contest in the summer, preliminaries will be open for at least one week each. Everyone still only gets 1 vote per IP address though. Voting will be in 6 episode batches by order in which they aired and everyone can vote for 3 episodes per batch. Feel free to sound off in the comments about why you chose what you did.

  1. Tomorrow ends our ranking polls for the hiatus.  We will pick it back up in summer hellatus
once all the episodes have aired.  At
that time I will announce which episodes get automatic entry into the Ultimate
Episode Poll and which ones will have to fight their way in through the wild
card polls.  Until that time, we still
have a little over a week until hellatus ends.  What would you like to poll on during that time?

  2. Yikes. Up the point where I stopped following SPN regularly. I've only seen about a third of S6 so far.

  3. The voting starts ho hum for me again.  In round 1, Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid, Point of No Return, and The Devil You Know get my vote by default.  I loved the back story on Bobby in DMDWP, PoNR killed off Zachariah in a thoroughly satisfying way, and The Devil You Know had a cool twist, Crowley, and awesome ending.  Loved how Sam took out Brady.  Still none of these episodes are going to get my vote when we are head-to-head.  I was tempted to vote for Hammer of the Gods if only for Gabriel but the gods were too lame and Lucifer annoyed me.  As for the others, Dark Side of the Moon was too angsty (plus they tossed the amulet) and 99 Problems aptly describes my issues with season 5 but other than that it was forgettable.Round 2 is even worse.  The only one I truly loved was Weekend at Bobby's, which was a Dabb & Loflin script.  I guess it's not too surprising that the only scenes I don't like are the ones with the Winchesters in them.  2 minutes to Midnight also gets my vote because exactly 1/2 of the episode was awesome - that being any scene with Death in it.  Best character introduction of all, even though Castiel's entrance comes very, very close.  Then it's a toss up between Swan Song for the nostalgia vote and Exile on Main St. because I'm one of the few who liked DomesticDean.  In the end I choose neither.  Only 2 votes from me in this round.  I also liked 2.5 Men but not as anything special, while 3rd Man may still be in my top 10 worst episodes of all time - if it's not bumped by 2 in round 4.  (And we're walking, and we're walking, there's a frog, and we're walking.....)Round 3 was crystal clear for me.  Votes to Caged Heat, Family Matters (hey even Dabb & Loflin have to get one exactly right sometime) and You Can't Handle the Truth.  Caged Heat and Family Matters both came with big twists and of course Crowley.  Everything is better with Crowley.  They were well-paced and full of action.  Exactly my kind of Supernatural episode.  YCHtT had an interesting story but mostly I liked it because the RoboSam plot line came to a head in this one.  Definite no goes to All Dogs Go to Heaven, which sucked out loud - one of the worst of season 6 and there were several to choose from.  Live Free or Twihard wasn't funny enough for a Twilight parody but VampireDean rocked.  CYHiYB brought fairies into Supernatural and that can't ever be forgiven.Round 4 includes a definite vote for The French Mistake which is unusual for me since I typically hate meta.  So much so I had a backup plan for the recap in case I hated it.  In the end, it was clever, funny, and a whole lot of fun.  Big kudos for this one!  And Then There Were None also gets my vote for its classic Supernatural feel, the death of the Campbells, and good pacing.  I hated that Rufus died though.  My third vote was a toos up between Appointment in Samarra and Like a Virgin but the nod went to AiS simply because it was more important.  It's hard to vote against the best brother hug though.  As for Unforgiven and Mannequin 3 - blech!  They are pushing my top 10 worst if they're not already in it.

  4. Dark Side of the Moon, 99 Problems, Point of no Return....
2 Minutes to Midnight, Swan Song, Weekend at Bobby's...
Family Matters, Caged Heat, Clap your Hands...
Appointment in Sammara, Unforgiven, The french Mistake.

Because they are all awesomer than the other ones. I had the most trouble in the last one and the first one - unforgiven may not be the one I wanted to guess but oh well.

  5. Group 17
    *Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid*
Bobby and Bobby's wife were really great and zombies are always fun.
    *Hammer of the Gods*
A personal favorite and Trickster's finest hour.
    *The Devil You Know*
A high quality Crowley episode.  'Nuff said.

    Group 18
    *2 Minutes to Midnight*
Crowley, lunch with Death, and Bobby and Sam at the warehouse makes for a darn good episode.
    *Swan Song*
Not a big fan but it easily beats the first three episodes of season six.
    *Weekend At Bobby's*
It's one of the best episodes of season six and the first one of the season that wasn't mediocre and forgettable.

    Group 19
    *Live Free or Twihard*
Decent episode that didn't live up to the excellent title.  However, this episode was better than the next three episodes that came after it.
*Clap Your Hands If You Believe*
This is the episode where robo-Sam became interesting.  The writers finally found a way to unleash the entertainment potential of "soulless Sam."
    *Caged Heat*
Cas, Crowley, Meg, plenty of suspense and lots of laughs.  Oh, the demon / angel kiss was fun too.

    Group 20
    *Appointment In Samarra*
Death, Tessa, & a good emotional story.  Easily one of the better season six episodes.
    *The French Mistake*
It's meta but it's decent.  It made the list because, once again, it's preceded by three very lackluster episodes.  I'm going to call it the NBC effect.
    *And Then There Were None*
A Rufus appearance, a tricky monster, and death abound.  A solid episode in a shaky season.

  6. wow, first time I'm leaving a poll completely blank. Just don't have any episodes that are favorites or I consider really good. Most are forgettable

    ReplyDelete
  7. It seems as though each of these polls has 3 episodes I enjoyed and 3 I loathed. So, that makes this much easier. :)

    ReplyDelete
  8. 1.  Dark Side of the Moon is my favorite in this group.  IT showed some of the past of both of the boys.  I cried for Dean in this episode.  The other two are Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid and The Point of No Return.  Both of these episodes were good in my opinion.

    2.  Swan Song  still makes me cry, but it it also a great story of the ultimate sacrifice and the love of two brothers.    I also enjoyed Two and a Half Men and Weekend at Bobby's.  I love what Jensen did with it.

    3.  These probably won't match with many others.  My favorite episodes dealt with Dean.   Live Free or Twihard and Dean's dealing with being a vampire was great.  I loved You Can't Handle the Truth where Dean finally discovers that Sam betrayed him and let him become a vampire while he watched.  Clap Your Hands is a fun episode.

    4.  Like a Virgin because of the comedy of Jensen Ackles.  Unforgiven, and i'll be honest.  I loved the story but I'm honest here....RoboSam, the cougar, and the bathroom.  I know a lot of people don't like  The French Mistake, but it's originality was what I liked,  Dean's I'm a Painter Whore, Sam's I"m something called a Jared Padalecki.  Dean seeing all the cars and going I"m sick.  I going to be sick.  IT goes on and on with someof the best one liners ever.

  9. Round 17: Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid - We got some back story on Bobby and we met Sheriff Mills. Point of No Return - Even though I really dislike the whole Adam storyline, we got to see Dean finally kill Zachariah. The Devil You Know - We find out how long YED had been messing with Sam's life and we get Crowley, which is always good.
Round 18: Two Minutes to Midnight - I really only liked the last half of the episode where we got Death's awesome entrance and more Crowley. Swan Song - Dean refusing to let his brother die alone. Weekend at Bobby's - I loved Bobby & Rufus in this episode and we got Sheriff Mills again.
Round 19: You Can't Handle the Truth - insight into RoboSam; Family Matters - More insight into the differences between Sam and RoboSam and we learn that Grandpa Creepy is working for Crowley.  Caged Heat - lots of action and more Crowley
Round 20: Appointment in Samarra - We got Death, Tessa, and a re-souled Sam.  The French Mistake - I loved the episode except for the last 5 minutes.  And Then There Were None - The end of the Campbells, YAY!  I hated that they killed off Rufus though :(.

    ReplyDelete
  10. :-)  We basically have the same votes for the same reasons.  Except you are way more concise than  I am.  I've got to start working on that.  :-P

    ReplyDelete
  11. Round 1 - nothing jumped out at me in this round, though I ended up with The Devil You Know (I love Crowley), Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid, and Point of No Return

Round 2 - Swan Song, 2 Minutes to Midnight (I LOVE Death), and Weekend at Bobby's - I think Jensen did a pretty decent job in his directorial debut!

Round 3 - this round was a bit easier.  I went with Caged Heat, You Can't Handle the Truth, and Family Matters

Round 4 - I still chuckle when I think of The French Mistake, so that got an easy vote.  The remaining two went to And Then There Were None and Appointment in Samarra.. I think I'm still trying to repress Mannequin 3: The Reckoning.. *shudder*

    ReplyDelete
  12. I had the same experience haha.. if there weren't three that I loved in a poll, there were generally three I absolutely hated.. it made everything so much easier!

    ReplyDelete
  13. i found these polls the easiest we've had so far. just easier to pick three episodes.

poll 17: hammer of the gods. love the trickster so anything with him is a win. although his death as really sad. i still hope they bring him back
point of no return. 100th episode. we killed zachariah, cas was awesome, dean stopped being sulky. the only priblem was adam but at least he didnt last the episode
the devil you know. crowley wins at life and makes any episode great. the way he tricked dean into dealing with brady was hilarious. and seeing the brothers begin to fight back again felt awesome.

poll 18: 2 minues to midnight. a fully jam packed penultimate episode. we saw and killed pestilence (who was uterlly gross) got crowley again. bobby got his legs back. and we met with one of the best characters ever, death. he is played so brilliantly and i just love any episode death is in and the way that he really just puts dean in his place.
swan song. i know many people didn't but i loved this finale. i dont even know how to describe it but i just really enjoyed it
weekend at bobbys. brilliant. bobby is awesome so to see an episode from his side was brilliant (not to mention the brilliant directing). oh, and monster kill by woodchipper may well be one of the best monster deaths ever.

poll 19: this was the region of seasin six that i didnt really care for. generally i love standalone, monster of the week episodes but most of these were crap. in the end i went with famiy matters and caged heat because they moved our story forward and were epically jam packed with action. and then live free or twihard because i needed a third and the twilight jokes made me laugh because inhate twilight.

poll 20: appointment in samarra. brilliant episode, both stories. we saw death again which was awesome because, as i've said, death rules, and watching dean take in his job was great. we also got soulless sam trying to kill bobby which was actually fun to watch because bobby is so awesome.
the french mistake. i don't think this needs much explanation. this entire episode simply wins at life. i love the alpacas. and misha crying. and everything else
and then there were none. this one was close between this and like a virgin. and liked like a virgin for the humour (dean vs the sword in the stone) and dragons and the mother reveal but and then there were none finally killed of grandpa creepy and pointless campbell cousin. we saw what eve could do, we got a new monster, some aweosme rufus and bobby scenes and brilliant bobby acting with that worm. the only bad part was loosing rufus but the rest was great, just the whole tense feeling kf the episode itself was great too, you never knew what was gonna happen, esoecially after dean shot pointless campell cousin, i did not see thT coming

  14. are we still doing best comedy episode?

    ReplyDelete
  15. Yep, and if I have time possibly a best quote poll although chances are this will only be the nominating stage for the hiatus and then a full-fledge poll during summer hellatus.

    ReplyDelete
  16. 17 - Dark side of the Moon, Point of No Return, The Devil You Know
18 - Swan Song, Two and a Half Men, Weekend At Bobby's
19 - You Can't Handle the Truth, Clap Your Hands if You Believe, Caged Heat
20 - Appointment in Samara, The French Mistake, And Then There Were None (this last episode was the only one I picked cause the others were worse)

    ReplyDelete
  17. Dark side of the moon was a horrible episode in its context and another example of everything that is wrong with SPN  and its Dean pov obsession .

    ReplyDelete
  18. You mean because it made Sam seem like an insensitive jerk who didn't think one iota about his brother?  Welcome to a Dabb & Loflin production where it is impossible to accurately portray both brothers in one 42 minutes episode.  Usually it's Dean that comes off as an imbecile or insufferable jerk in their character assassinations.  This time their poison pen was aimed at Sam.  Urgh!

    ReplyDelete
  19. Poll 1
    Dark Side of The Moon.
For the romp through Heaven and the variagated adventures we saw there.
How can you not like wee Sam and Dean's firework moment.
We get to know that their souls have a connection, and for eternity will probably share a heaven.:)

That makes up a little for the heart-breaking moment of the Amulet being thrown away.
( Bad Jensen, could you not have worn a light plastic one in the fight scenes! :-) )

    Point of no Return
One of those full episodes where there is not a free minute, and Dean's white pupils as he kills Zachariah are still a mystery to me. Is he secretly an angel? I thought only angels could kill another angel. Muh.

    The Devil You Know.
    I really loved this episode.
Crowley always peps up a scene.
I won't say any more as I could gush on!
Suffice to say that I really gongled when Sam took out Brady.
He did it so elegantly, too :)

The other three are ok, re-watchable at any time.

    Poll 2
I'll give it to Two Minutes To Midnight for the great scene between Dean and Death and the boys getting sick while searching for Pestilence, who was really so revolting.
However the whole idea of Sam's to throw himself into the Cage just didn't go down well with me.

Now to season six. I love season six. :)

    Exile on Main Street
It was so nice to see the brothers again and the whole episode was interesting.
However you could see from the first encounter that something was wrong with Sam. If he had been normal he would have thrown himself onto Dean in a bear-hug instead of vice-versa.
We get lots of questions thrown at us and introduced to the rather creepy Campbell family.
I just want to say that I have a grudge against Bobby here.
How could  he not tell Dean about Sam being alive. If he knew anything about Dean, he must have known how he was suffering about Sam being in the Cage.

    Two and a half Men.
It's the first time we see the guys hunting together.
We get introduced to the Alphas, and get to see more about the character of the unusual Sam that has returned from Hell. It's all very intriguing and interesting, for me, anyway.
Lisa is very understanding, and so we get that wonderful shot of Dean in the garage admiring his Baby and the satisfaction on his handsome face! :)

I enjoyed all the others too except Swan Song. I was totally against the idea of Sam throwing himself into the cage and I would have preferred the brothers to fight on and have found some other way.
After all, what we were shown in "The End " would not have come to pass, as Dean and Sam weren't estranged as they were there, so the future would have been different anywayI

    Poll 3
Live Free or Twihard------- vampire Dean and the mystery of Sam not helping his brother.
Family Matters---------------great ep, enough said to stop afore- mentioned gushing. :-)
Caged Heat-----------Ditto. perhaps my favourite ep of the season. Just so much happening. Then Crowley is fantastic.
I liked all the other eps. too but having to choose three...........!

    Poll 4
Very undecided here.I like them all.

Appointment in Samarra.  Death is just too good
I loved how Dean chose Sam without any hesitation :)
Then the scenes with  " I don't want my soul back Sam" were thrilling.

Like A Virgin, not so much for the hug, as I much prefer the one in Lazarus Rising, but for the return of soulful Sammy and for Dean's happiness about it. Although I miss Soulless Sam. I liked him too.
It wasn't his fault he didn't have a soul.

    And Then There were None.
I loved trying to spot all the details that were different in this reality.
I got the feeling they had more money to spare, and with the presence of Ellen they seemed happier and less desperate and depressed.

I am not a fan of meta, but I even enjoyed the French Mistake, which isn't as bad as I thought it would be.
I enjoyed the other two as well and I don't understand all the dislike of them

    ReplyDelete
  20. The problem isn't the popularity of Dean. Do you think a Sam version would really have been better, with Dean not having Sam in his heaven at all?

    ReplyDelete
  21. 17)Point of no Return.Haven't thought about it much but I think it ranks third in my favorite list.Zachariah's death was the third death on the show(after Azazel and Ruby) that made me cheer out loud. But most importantly Dean got out of the I'm-ready-to-say-yes phase and we got the wink!
Dark Side of The Moon, depressing I know but I liked how they showed Heaven. There was Ash,Pamela,Zachariah and I liked Joshua. And if there was any doubt that God deserves to get his ass kicked this episode erased it.Downside was the whole amulet thing, but I hope we see it again soon.
The remaining episodes are on the same level, good just missing a little something to make them great. In the end I went Hammer of the Gods because I seriously love Richard and it had the Gabriel vs Lucifer confrontation.

18)Swan Song and Weekend at Bobby's are the ones I'm certain about.Swan Song for the final scenes in the cemetery and Weekend at Bobby's because it was plain awesome to see things from Bobby's point of view. For my third vote I was between 2 Minutes to Midnight, which introduced Death and The Third Man,which introduced Balthazar.I went with The Third Man only because I miss Balthazar and because I don't think 2 Minutes to Midnight will need my vote.

19)Very easy,You Can't Handle the Truth,Family Matters and Caged Heat. The last two especially were amazing with good twists, which is what makes an episode for me.And of course there was Crowley.
Live Free or Twihard had the potential to be much better,Clap Your Hands if you Believe had its moments but was missing something and I'm still mourning over the fact that Supernatural created an episode like All Dogs Go to Heaven, which was the second episode after Swap Meat that I passed entire scenes without bothering to watch..

20)The French Mistake was simply perfect and gets my first vote,Unforgiven and Mannequin 3 are episodes I'd rather not think about so they're out of the question.
Of the remaining three my second vote goes to Appointment in Samarra. We saw Death,Tessa,Balthazar,we saw Dean as Death and Sam got his soul back.Awesomeness all over!
And Then There Were None and Like a Virgin were both very good but I voted for the first one because of Rufus and because after a long time the deaths were truly shocking and unexpected.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Tough ones again... can we please go to season seven already so I can vote for episodes I truly love?
    anyways in these polls:

    Poll 1:
99 Problems - because I loved drunk Castiel
Point of No Return - one of the best episodes of season 5, with lots of action and killing off Zachariah
Hammer of the Gods - because a big part of it was actually fun to watch, which didn't happen much at the end of season 5

    Poll 2:
seriously, I wouldn't choose any of these if they weren't up against each other. Rather weak episodes, all of them, but eventually I went with:
Swan Song, Two and a Half Men, The Third Man

    Poll 3:
You Can't Handle the Truth - because it revolved around the "what's wrong with Sam" mystery and it was back when parts of season 6 actually felt exciting to me
Clap Your Hands if You Believe - I really wanted to vote for Family Matters, but I thought Clap Your Hands should get some recognition, as it was so completely NOT Supernatural-style and yet somehow I managed to enjoy it almost entirely :P
Caged Heat - no comment, it was just a good episode

    Poll 4:
Appointment in Samarra - Balthazar and Tessa are enough for an episode to get my vote
The French Mistake - one of the best, if not the best episode of the season. Brilliant meta and brilliant humour
And Then There Were None - not that I'm crazy about it, but it's still better than the remaining three

    ReplyDelete
  23. I agree, the episode was really bad, I'd start my criticism with the fact the actual portrayal of heaven was the dumbest idea they could've come up with. They never actually showed hell, they just gave us glimpses of it and it felt right. Why did they have to go that far into heaven? I'd rather not know how depressing the afterlife was according to them. Terrible and pointless, IMO.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Poll 17: Dark Side of the Moon, loved the different times Sam & Dean remembered fondly, Sam when he was away from family and Dean with.  Point of No Return, even thought I never liked Adam, the rest of ep was very good, the beating Cas gives Dean and Dean telling Sam, Don't piss off a nerd Angel. The Devil You Know, I loved Pestilence, he was just so gross. A fun ep.

Poll 18: Swan Song is fighting with Death's Door as my favorite ep, did a lot of sobbing at the beating Lucifer/Sam gave Dean, loved the part Baby played in the whole thing.
Weekend at Bobby's was an excellent first directing job for Jensen and I enjoy eps about Bobby.
Two Minutes to Midnight for Cas in hospital and Death, SPN could not have found a better actor to play Death, Julian Richings is awesome.

Poll 19: This one was hard for me, would have liked to vote for 5. Live Free or Twihard started out so corny, but I still laughed, but wow ended with a bang with a vamp Dean.  Clap Your Hands If You Believe, this was very funny with Robo Sam and Dean telling him, Empathy, Sam, empathy.  Caged Heat if for no other reason than Castiel's Pizza Man, but there was a lot going on we see what a "good" granddad Samuel is.

Poll 20: The only one I really like in this group was The French Mistake, one of the funniest eps to date. Will go with Appointment in Samarra because Death is in it and soulless Sam is awesome trying to kill Bobby.  Like A Virgin only for the scenes of Dean trying to pull the sword from the stone and I wanted to pick 3.

    ReplyDelete
  25. sweet! that sounds awesome. there are so many good quotes though, voting will be so hard!
i keep trying to think of things we coukd do but we did them all in the last break or this time last year.
have we done best monster? or goriest episode? or worst character?

    ReplyDelete
  26. Great picks, best monster, goriest ep or worst character, that would be fun.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I love the idea of worst character.  My guess is that at this juncture, Becky would be crowned the winner although there are plenty I could add.  Would be interesting to see where Ruby and Bela fall on it.  This may have to be our next poll.

I'm pretty sure we did monster/villain last year but we only did goriest death, not goriest episode.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Agreed that the fireworks scene was awesome but the fireworks scene and the scene with Mary are the only scenes in Dark Side of the Moon I liked.  Otherwise it was just depressing for me.  I always thought Dean's eyes were white because they were reflecting the grace pouring out of Zachariah.  White eyes were the demon Lilith's trademark too.  Totally agree with Crowley, Death, and Exile on Main St. as a whole.  I thought RoboSam was awesome too.  He was lighter and yet more intense at the same time.  Mostly though he brought the fun and the snark.  That had been missing in previous seasons and it was good to have it back.  I think you are mixing up And Then There Were None and My Heart Will Go On though.  ATTWN had the herpes worm infecting people.  It included the death of Grandpa Creepy, Last-to-Die Cousin, and dear, dear Rufus.  As for French Mistake, I am typically the biggest anti-meta episode person around but I liked it too.  It was just that well done.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I cheered for Zachariah's death too.  Another YES! moment in the series.  I also agree that twists make an episode for me.  I watch a lot of TV (although not near as much as some on this site) so when an episode of a series I've watched for 7 years can take me by surprise, it's always a high point.  Since Supernatural does it fairly regularly, it always keeps my attention.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Season 7 episodes on the way.  In fact early because I have an anniversary party to go to.  I agree about Hammer of the Gods.  It might not have been the best episode and the writing was iffy (and that's generous), but it didn't make me want to jump off a bridge in my despair.  Well, except for the Gabriel dying part.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Ah, Julian Ritchings.  Definitely one of the biggest supporting actor gifts to the Supernatural community.  I honestly think when Supernatural is done they should do a spin-off with a resurrected Bobby and Rufus teaming up occasionally with Crowley and Death.  I have no idea why they would all work together but I would love having all of them on my screen again.  Heck, let's throw Ellen in too if everyone's getting resurrected.  Or maybe no one gets resurrected and they take the fight to another plain of existence.  Yep, we definitely need a spin-off!

"Empathy, Sam.  Empathy" is one of my favorite lines in season 6.

    ReplyDelete
  32.  You're quite right, I have mixed them up, idiot that I am!
That's what happens when you're trying to do things in a hurry and then gush on and on!

In any case I vote for it just the same as it was an awsome episode too. One of my favourites.
The only thing i wasn't too happy with was the death of Gwen as I quite liked her and I think she could have still been useful in the future.
I was happy to see the end of Samuel and I liked the Khan worm , shades of one of my favourite TOS films.
Sad about Rufus too. he was really "simpatico!"

    ReplyDelete
  33. The only one of all these episodes I think is an absolute gimme--a requirement for any fan--is "The French Mistake."

    ReplyDelete
  34. 17. Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid, Dark Side of the Moon, The Devil You Know
    18. 2 Minutes to Midnight, Swan Song, Weekend at Bobby's
    19. Family Matters, Clap Your Hands if you Believe, Caged Heat
    20. Appointment in Samarra, The French Mistake, And Then There Were None

  36. So I pretty much disliked most of season 6, and have not given it many rewatches, compared to seasons1-5 which I have probably rewatched, in their entirety, 10-15 times now.

Dark Side of the Moon, 99 Problems, and Point of No Return are a very strong series of three episodes that clearly mark Dean's slow breakdown of will to keep saying no to Michael. I think Dark Side is tied with In My Time of Dying as my favorite episode of all, even though it's quite tragic. It's just so beautifully shot, and acted, and there's so many layers. Then there's a return of strength and hope at the end of Point of No Return when Dean kills Zach (too bad, I loved to hate him!) but then they lose Adam. I just really like the way the story flows over these three episodes.

Two Minutes to Midnight - Sam really showed a great deal of character growth over the back half of season 5. His decision to sacrifice himself here, and the despair Dean feels at "allowing" him to do it when all he wants is to protect him is really great drama.
Swan Song - if I didn't want to see this show and these boys continue to fight monsters and bicker with each other forever, I honestly would have been happy had the show ended with this episode. As horribly tragic and emotional as it was, it really works as a series finale. Things are not quite tied up neatly with a bow, and no one really gets a happy ending, except the world and they don't even know it. I loved the backstory of the Impala, and the narration by Chuck. I do not subscribe to the theory that Chuck is God, however. It just doesn't make sense in retrospect. I believe that the "Gospel" of Sam and Dean as God had seen it was complete, thus Chuck's work on earth was done and he was rewarded with heaven, that's why he disappeared. But that's just my theory. I sobbed when I watched this the first time, and still I cry at each subsequent viewing. Sam taking control over Lucifer is a powerful moment, and a testament to the bond the boys have with each other and the car.
Two and Half Men - yeah, this one is quite horrible. But we get to see Dean be all fatherly (which is so adorable) and protective. But this is when Dean finally joins up with Sam permanently, and we get that scene at the end with Baby. I gotta mention here that while I really like Exile on Main St., I just really hated how season 6 started. I had a certain expectation with the episode and was so disappointed because to me, having watched seasons 1-5 on DVD back to back, it was so glaringly obvious something was wrong with Sam and I didn't like it. It made me uncomfortable that he wasn't acting the same. Thus, I can completely see and understand why Jensen had a hard time filming the first half of season 6. Ugh. Just all of season 6. Bleh.
Weekend at Bobby's was so close...but ultimately I couldn't pick it.

Do I have to vote? Ugh.
-Live Free or Twi-hard as here we finally do see that something really is very, very wrong with Sam. Also, Dean has some great lines as a vamp in this one. Can't say I liked seeing Dean as a vamp...but the other stuff outweighs that awfulness.
-Caged Heat because here we see that though Dean values family, being related by blood doesn't mean you are "family". Samuel is awful here, and Soulless Sam is clueless. I love Dean's promise to kill Samuel next time they meet...

Like a Virgin - SAM IS BACK FINALLY!!!! This is the only reason I like this episode. Because otherwise...dragons? Really? Though Bobby has a great line about calling Hogwarts. lol. But Sam and Dean are back in business! I love that about this episode and watch it only for this reason.
French Mistake - Meta at it's finest. Great jabs at Hollywood and fame. Hilarious.
Then There Were None; But why did they kill Rufus!!!! :( Aside from the lame Kahn worm (I still don't understand the point of it...) and the fact that EVERYONE was killed, this was a good episode. I enjoy it upon rewatching at least.

  37. Poll 17:
Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid, Point of No Return (Yay Zach bites it!!) & The Devil You Know (Yay Crowley).
    Poll 18:
2 Minutes to Midnight (Love Death - and that's one of the weirdest things I've ever said) Swan Song (They were all heroes - Sam, Dean, Bobby, Cas & Baby)
    Weekend at Bobby's
I would have voted for Exile On Main Street (my only complaint here is that they tried to pack too much into one episode) if I'd been allowed another vote
    Poll19:
You Can't Handle The Truth, Family Matters & Caged Heat. (RoboSam, plus Crowley in the last 2)
I loathed All Dogs Go to Heaven. Even RoboSam ("Lucky, roll over") couldn't rescue it. LFoT didn't live up to my expectations but would have been my 4th vote. CYHiYB had some great one liners & of course RoboSam.
    Poll 20:
Appointment in Samarra, The French MIstake, And Then there Were None. (Poor Rufus) I also liked Like A Virgin
