EEEEEEEEEEE can't wait!
ReplyDeleteSounds good! Except for now I have the song stuck in my head!
ReplyDeleteThis seems goofy but potentially very fun. I wonder who the "old friend" is?
ReplyDeleteLOL, glad I'm not the only one. I went and listened to it after I heard the title.
ReplyDeleteI'm pretty sure it's Jody Mills.
ReplyDeleteI was actually thinking about posting a couple lines from the lyrics...But decided against it.
ReplyDeletesounds like SO much fun :) and I absolutely can't wait for Jason Dohring in this episode!!
ReplyDeleteIt better not be. Dean has a scene with Eliot Ness. Sam has a scene with Sheriff Mills?
ReplyDeleteReally? Huh. I guess I wouldn't caracterize her as an "old friend." I'd consider her an old friend of Bobby's but not Sam's.
ReplyDeleteI wonder what Dean did to piss off the god of time? Probably mouthing off as usual!! :)
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed Slash Fiction which was also written by Robbie Thompson, so I have high hopes for this.
Well, I think I remember Kim saying on Twitter she was flying up for this episode, so it might be her.
ReplyDeleteOsiris proved that you don't have to annoy or antagonize a god for them to mess with you. Almost every single god introduced on Supernatural has been a complete tool.
ReplyDeleteLOL true. Capricious, fickle, selfish gods - typical!
ReplyDeletesounds awesome, but january needs to hurry up so we can find out about bobby
ReplyDeletesame here
ReplyDeleteOld friend?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! Can't wait for this!!!
ReplyDeleteI wonder who the old friend is? Jody probably. I wonder what the purpose of all this time travel is. These eps were supposed to be secret, right? It sounds fun, but not particularly plot relevant.
ReplyDeleteReally juiced for this ep
ReplyDeletenever that crazy about the time travel episodes
ReplyDeleteJASON DOHRING!
ReplyDeleteI love me some Jason Dohring!
ReplyDeleteI'm a bit surprised about Eliot Ness. By 1944, he was a bureaucrat. I guess they will be taking more leeway with the history than they do with urban legends and monsters. Still, "the reappearance of an old friend" is even more worrisome. My guess is Castiel and I really do not want to see resurrected angels coming back into play. While the guest stars are top notch, this episode has great potential for being divisive in the fandom.
ReplyDeleteThat surprises me too. What need would they have of Sheriff Mills with Bobby gone or why would she go looking for them?
ReplyDeleteSam had a scene with Samuel Colt. I'd call them even with the meeting of famous historical people. :-)
ReplyDeleteI wonder why all these gods keep trying to mess with the Winchesters. Perhaps gods are bored out of their minds these days, but bad things always seem to happen to them when they tangle with the Winchesters. Maybe it's the god version of a cry for help.
ReplyDeleteI for one am hoping we do not get a replay of the Frontierland ending fiasco. If they are time traveling to get something to take down the Leviathans or finding a way to undo Bobby's death, I want the brothers to be successful. No more mailed in solutions in the last 2 minutes.
ReplyDeleteMaybe something to do with the head Bobby gave her?
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed the first one but for the most part time travel just makes the story line hard to suspend disbelief. I think it's a plot device that is nearing the end of its welcome on Supernatural. Of course, it might also be my favorite episode of the season. Hard to tell by the vague synopsis.
ReplyDeleteMaybe she's coming back to be killed. She has been alive for an aweful long time, how dare she!!
ReplyDeleteNo, but really, please don't kill Jody SPN :/
I hope they're going back in time to actually do something productive. I don't like time travel episodes/movies all that much to begin with. Im suspecting, from the comment on Sam trying to get Dean back that they didn't go looking for Chronos. Or, I guess Chronos agreed to send Dean back, but refused to bring him to present times after he was done? Idk, we'll have to wait and see.
ReplyDeleteand Jason Dohring is a natural - I'm looking forward to the return of Logan Echolls
ReplyDeleteNow that makes sense. Um...well...kind of. Shouldn't she have already thrown the thing off a bridge somewhere? If she kept it as a souvenir then I'm not sure she would make a good ally for the Winchesters.
ReplyDeleteAgreed. I'm of the philosophy that if Becky made it through alive then every single female this season gets an automatic pass.
ReplyDeleteCorrect me if I'm wrong (because I probably am) but didn't Bobby ask her to bury it?
ReplyDeleteAgreed. If this is another the Winchesters are screwed at the whim of yet another powerful being, then it's simply filler. I would hope the episode would move the mytharc along since it is the halfway point and the brothers presumably still will not have a clue how to start vanquishing the Leviathans. Perhaps Al Capone was a Leviathan and Eliot Ness has some way in the guise of tax evasion to take them down.
ReplyDeleteI went and rechecked. He tells her to toss it off Underhill Bridge.
ReplyDelete"I wonder why all these gods keep trying to mess with the Winchesters."
ReplyDeleteWell, they are the only humans on the show that have the stones to poke around in the affairs of deities.
That was quick. Thanks for the refresher. I figured I was wrong. :)
ReplyDeleteLOL totally called it that Sam wouldn't do the time travelling...I just hope that he is on screen for more than 5 mins or I'll skip this episode
ReplyDeleteI think we're safe on the angel front - Misha isn't set to come back until the 17th episode, right? anyway, I think that story line has played out - based on the "back to basics vibe" of this season, I don't think they're looking to bring any of the angels back.. they were too deus ex machina for the direction they've been heading, in my opinion
ReplyDeleteHere's hoping for Balance. To me, that would mean that Dean will get to remain in his 21st century clothes and bring a little knowledge of the future "briefly" to Eliot Ness, while Sam will get tons more time to save the day and have a cool show down with the God of Time to save Dean, Bobby, or at least a damsel in distress.
ReplyDeleteOf course, since Dean is the only one going back in time, that is probably where all of the time will be spent... like in In the Beginning and The End.
Do I truly expect Balance? Not so much :-(
Of all the weird and unrelated places for a pissed-off God of Time to send somebody, the world of Elliot Ness has to be among the Top Ten.
ReplyDeleteso why exactly the they tangle with The God of time again? are they purposly trying to back in time or something and why again? either way sounds like a fun episode i always like episodes where they go back in time
ReplyDeleteJason Dohring, time travel and a reappearance in one episode! Can't get any better that that..
ReplyDeleteWe know it's not Cas though. He's supposed to come back in episode 17 and while it's possible that they'll want to surprise us by bringing him back a little sooner,if that's the case, they won't go announcing it left and right..
Who could it be?Real question is whether this friend is alive or comes back from the dead..If it's someone who's still alive..I have nothing.I don't think there's anyone left! : p
What for? why does the God of Time send Dean back? what is the need except to have Dean dress up and come out with snappy one liners.
ReplyDeleteWhich god of time are we dealing with here? The Greek Chronos? The return of Kali? A made-up-for-Supernatural deity?
ReplyDeleteUnless Cas is in a different vessel and Misha is coming back as a leviathan. Misha did say Cas was somewhat changed.
ReplyDeleteHaving a duel with the phoenix in the Old West is not equivalant to having a chat with Jodi Mills - who was on the show just a few weeks ago - in the present. Jodi may be in this episode, but her appearance isn't exciting enough to warrant a vague tease.
ReplyDeleteNic Lea and Jason Dohring in the same episode? Gonna love this one. :)
ReplyDeleteI think I've read the same bit of synopsis regarding Sam 3times already this season-episode 3 he meets an old friend (Amy-dead by the end of the episode-sets up Dean's arc of emo), episode 8 he has a confontation with someone from his past (Becky-completely pointless-Dean gets to work with another hunter and has a confrontation with Crowley) and now episode 12 where Sam is surprised by the reappearance of an old friend while Dean gets to go off and actually do something.
ReplyDeleteIts like the writers have decided they dont have any storyline for Sam so they just pull the same piece of crap from their asses to give him something to do.
will the old friend be male of female? most likely female
will they actually be a friend or are the CW being liberal with that term these days? CW being liberal
will said person survive beyond the episode? I doubt it
will that part of the episode be completley unimportant? most likely
will anyone actually care? unlikely
at least Sam gets to help the little girl find her hunter father in 11 and save his brothers ass? in 12 and most likely 13, get beat up by clowns in 14 if he's lucky he'll be dead by 15.
when did this show become so one sided and so damned boring?
This I REALLY agree with. Dean is the one who always gets to go back in time, whether Sam goes with him or not. Apparently it must be sacrilege to send Sam off alone to the past. He must not be good enough or able to handle himself. Balance? Yeah... these writers wouldn't know "balance" if it straight up bitch slapped them in the face. This is disappointing to say the least.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I agree with this all over. I'm quite upset and disappointed. Here I thought Sam was gonna be the one to go back in time since it was heavily hinted at. This season is turning out to be just one disappointment after another for me.
ReplyDeleteMisha already confirmed he's coming back as Cas though. Just a changed Cas who apparently doesn't wear any underwear.
ReplyDeleteDress up, get to shoot machine guns, get to work with both awesome guest stars including Nicholas Lea, get the snappy one liners and get to be the one who goes back in time. You actually think they'd pay that kind of attention to Sam? That's sacrilege!
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't be surprised if they were just being flexible with history again. I mean they certainly were with Fronteirland. The real Samuel Colt lived in Hartford, CT. I work across the street from his house, and his factory is a little up the road from there. He definitely wasn't a cowboy in 1853 Connecticut.
ReplyDeleteI know :( I only really liked the two first episodes. I had really low expectations for Sam's character so I'm not so surprised but it sucks :(
ReplyDeleteSadly, that has been the trend for the past few seasons :(
ReplyDeleteSimple solution, stop watching.
ReplyDeleteHe's Chronos, the Greek God of Time.In a much younger version!
ReplyDeleteI would but I'm invested now, I need to know how the story ends no matter how crappy. I'm in it on some level to the end even if I dont particularly like what I see anymore, besides there is always the off chance that another great episode like Hello Cruel World will come along.
ReplyDeleteCould be,but I don't think so..
ReplyDeleteWhen they say old friend,I'm thinking someone we haven't seen in a while.I have no idea!
Honestly,my first thought was Gabriel(I don't know why),but even though he helped them I don't know if he falls into the "friend" category.
The only "old friends" I can think of are dead:Ellen,Ash,Pamela(I'm leaving Jo and Rufus out, cause we saw them recently).
Chuck, maybe?Again,I don't know if they considered him a friend.
I'm lost!
he's been demoted to a Cupid I'm telling ya, its like the angel form of humiliation in the work place
ReplyDeleteI agree, not Jodi Mills, would like it to be Jo again, did not say it was a live person.
ReplyDeleteOh yeah, Logan and Josef Kostan in Moonlight.
ReplyDeleteLOL, I would take any of Misha's tweets with a huge grain of salt.
ReplyDeleteI just hope Sam gets to use that pump shotgun, love the way he chambers a round with one hand...TURNS ME ON. LOL
ReplyDeleteI read..somewhere, that is was The Greek Chronos, but then again I don't believe everything I read. ;)
ReplyDeleteJason Dohring? They left one show off his list. He was a regular on Moonlight. This one is going to be good. I wonder who the old friend of Sam's is? Let's hope Dean doesn't have to kill this one.
ReplyDeleteHmmm. Love Nicholas Lea, and Dean looks good in the 1940s suit. But ANOTHER ep where the boys are separated? REALLY not what I want to watch - particularly as ep11 sounds like they are following different agendas / cases too!
ReplyDeleteJim MIchaels (one of the producers) has just tweeted to clarify that the title is actually 'Time After Time'.
ReplyDeleteYou would think all this time traveling Dean has done would affect his sense of time or something. It must be confusing at the very least.
ReplyDeletewell, Veronica Mars & Ringer were on The CW, and yes, I know The CW ran Moonlight re-runs that one summer... but that's probably why
ReplyDeleteYour post is missing a very large 'IN MY OPINION'. I'm loving s7, and I am a huge Sam fan (I love boys equally)
ReplyDeleteLMAO does that mean he got fat like Cupid too? xD ;D
ReplyDeleteHaha I know. I do, but I still felt it necessary to point out one of Misha's hijinks.
ReplyDeleteSo I have noticed... since when did Sam become a supporting character to Dean? I thought Sam was a main character in this show. I've even had Dean fans and bi bro fans point out how much this character is being neglected. That's pretty bad if Dean fans are noticing it too.
ReplyDeleteI suggest you lower your expectations even more, I already have
ReplyDeleteThanks for the info. I really don't know much about Samuel Colt. It did seem a stretch for him to be a cowboy instead of an industrialist.
ReplyDeleteIt's always difficult to comment on something when you only have a couple of sentences to go by.
ReplyDeleteWe know that Dean goes back in time but we don't know the reason.
Does the god sent him back by accident, for help, to get rid of him, to separate him from Sam, to retrieve something for him? Muh!
I'm more curious about the old friend that Sam will meet. I mean he doesn't really have all that many.
Could it be someone from his College days, come to think of it most of his college acquaintances were demons!. Poor Sammy!
Could it be Sarah, I'd like to see her again. :-)
However, I am always optimistic and excited by a new episode. :)
"90% +" agree with you and Julia that the "old friend" is "Jody Mills" because Kim Rhodes tweeted that she had scenes with "Sam" in 7.12. The SPN "official description writers" take major liberties with episode description releases. I don't know who else the "old friend" could be unless a ghostie shows up to tell Sam something which is possible.
ReplyDeleteUntil 7.11 airs I'm holding out hope that Bobby survived the flatlining and the surgery and is convalescing at Jody's house and she's there to give the boys (or just Sam if Dean is not present) an update on his condition. That would make a reasonable explanation for why KR is in 7.12 but there was no mention of JB being in 7.12.
ReplyDeletenot entirely sure Sam and Jo can be classed as friends. Why would he be surprised to see her he only saw her a few months ago? Why would they bring back Jo for Sam to interact with? Its more likely to be Becky or the Sheriff who aren't actually Sam's friends. But hey they need something to fob Sam fans off with don't they?!
ReplyDeleteIn fact does Sam actually have any friends?
High Five on That! Yes, both guys went back in time, but Sam's quick little scene with Samuel doesn't compare to all of the individual stuff Dean did in that episode. He went from a western fan!boy to a true gun slinging hero by the end. Sam, got to show Samuel his phone and impress him enough so that they get the ashes in the mail. Not really equal. So, sending Dean back to meet Elliot Ness isn't really making things more equal. Unless maybe the episode has 8 minutes of Dean having cool scenes with Tommy guns and Sam gets 30 minutes of rescuing Dean and dealing with a God.
ReplyDeleteMy guess is we will get 5 minutes of Sam & Dean together. Then, Dean gets zapped back and Sam spends 5 minutes researching (with no help from Bobby *sniff*). Meanwhile, Dean will get 20 minutes of coolness in 1944 where he might learn something really cool, but he won't be able to save himself. Then, Sam will get 5 minutes tracking down and trapping Chronos. Finally, we will get 5-7 minutes of wrap up with Sam & Dean.
I do have a tiny bit of hope that we will get something like Clap Your Hands. That episode teased about Dean getting kidnapped by Fairies and I thought the whole episode would be about Dean. However, it turned out to be much more balanced than I expected. Dean's time with the Fairies wasn't really shown except for the Hotel room and Jail cell. Maybe Dean will end up getting thrown in Jail and his time in 1944, will be just a few conversations and waiting to get "rescued"... It is possible (but I wouldn't bet any money on it).
ReplyDeleteI remember reading an article that we should expect to see Sam in a zoot suit and I was excited... but oh well.
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to see Nick Lea on my 2nd favorite tv show ever (X-Files being the #1)!!! :)
ReplyDeleteI like your "CYHIYBL" balance theory, too, and the ep is written by Robbie Thompson who did a superb, balanced job of writing Slash Fiction. Unfortunately there are so many screen caps and promos out there will Dean working side by side with Eliot Ness, (after being arrested) shooting a Tommy Gun together at something AND dressed in 40's style clothing to boot.
ReplyDeleteThere's no indications from the episode description that says "Dean goes shopping for zoot suits before he goes back in time" so he probably shows up in 1944 in whatever he's wearing in the present and then gets outfitted in "past clothing".
I think your estimate of a TE, OTHOAP -ish time estimate (~ 8 - 10 or so minutes) "Sam/Dark Sam/Samifer Face -Time" is probably close, possibly 12-14 min max in the episode.
As I mentioned one small hope for if not "Balance" but more screen time for Sam is that SF was so balanced in both screen time and story arc.
I agree gals/guys and if I read one more "justification" of why "Dean gets solo time travel trips and Sam doesn't" is *because Sam got () powers and the 'focus'" (but drastically little POV) of the "myth arc" for 5 seasons" I'll throw something. This weak justification is trotted out every time the Dean character "gets more of something important" than Sam gets.
ReplyDelete(I know this ^^^ seems like I'm an anti-Dean, fanatical Sam Fan but I love Dean, too)
In my head, Bobby lives so I love your idea. However, I am psyching myself up to only see further adventures of Bobby Singer in fan fiction.
ReplyDeleteThat's all I look for... balance. I hate when one character is practically invisible in an episode. It wouldn't be so bad if they flopped back and forth like they did in Seasons 1-2 and most of 3... But, since then not so much.
ReplyDeleteMaybe Sam gets to do something really interesting to get Dean back and it will balance out more like Free to be You and Me. That was a split episode where both brothers had something significant happening.
Slash Fiction wasn't bad for the balance, but the guys weren't split up. It is the separating combined with the Time Travel that makes me nervous. Still, I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
Maybe it will be an old college friend. I believe those are the only friends he has left, but I thought he broke off contact.
ReplyDeleteMaybe in a surprise twist the God of Time sends Dean back there to be helpful instead of vengeful. Maybe he hates the Leviathans as much as Crowley does.
ReplyDeleteEgads please do not let it be Missouri. We haven't seen her since season 1 and I'm good with that. I guess it's asking too much for Sarah to come back.
ReplyDeleteI think it's fair to say that many old arguments/complaints/justifications are being recycled over and over again by all sides of the fandom. At least the hiatus isn't too far off. Then we will hopefully have new things to complain about and argue over.
ReplyDeleteWho the hell is the one and only Eliot Ness? I hate it when they go too US centric with all the references, it's harder to enjoy for me as a European. Maybe it's the reason I didn't enjoy the Wild West episode either.
ReplyDeleteI thought I was the only one who felt like this
ReplyDeleteI thought he said he couldnt poop for a week afterwards
ReplyDeleteIf you're talking about the quote in the news articles, this is what he said:
ReplyDelete"I can confirm that the character of Castiel is
returning to 'Supernatural,'" he told us. "I'm not supposed to talk
about any details, but I will tell you this: The character is coming
back somewhat changed. I'm not going to tell you everything, but I will
tell you that the "new" Castiel no longer wears undergarments."He never actually says that he'll be playing Cas. While I'm not really expecting the show would recast Cas, if they really want to change things up, who knows?
LOL, yeah, Cass was going to zap them to a new town and Dean told him that and so they drove. Loved it.
ReplyDeleteIt could be an 'old friend' of Sam's that we've never met. Like from college or something. We didn't know Brady before "The Devil You Know" but he was an old friend of Sam's, too. Just saying you never know about these press releases because sometimes I don't think the person writing them actually watches the show. :)
ReplyDeleteAnd maybe "Alcatraz" was another name for purgatory. :)
ReplyDeleteyes I am getting really sick of not seeing sam do anything cool anymore it really sucks! and its pissing me off so much that I was seeing that xmas movie that jared did and saying he is to good for supernatural he should leave the show and go on to something better. bad of me to say that but I am not liking season 7 he had so much to do on season 6 and now nothing it suck jared is better then that.
ReplyDeleteThe 'old friend' referred to may or may not be Sheriff Mills, but she is definitely in this ep. She tweeted on 8th Dec that the ep she was in was Time After Time. So the balance of probability is that it is her. Sam does know her from DMDWP.
ReplyDeleteI figure I usually get 3 or 4 episodes a season that are really stellar. Then, 4 or more episodes that are still better than any other TV show out there (IMO of course)... Most of the rest of the episodes I like about as much as other TV shows... I seldom see 4 Supernatural episodes that I don't want to re-watch in a seasons, so I figure I'm always ahead. But, a lot of us are feeling your frustration. I am in it until the end also, but it makes me feel better to vent a bit.
ReplyDeleteEliot Ness was a prohibition agent back when the US tried to outlaw alcohol. He led a team of agents nicknamed "The Untouchables".
ReplyDeleteHe co-wrote a book called The Untouchables and then there was a TV Series, and a couple of movies. I'm sure that US History buffs know quite a bit about him, but I can guarantee you that the only reason I recognize the name is from the entertainment industry. He was working to bring down Al Capone (a big time gangster) during a time rife with corruption and that makes for very exciting entertainment.
Bwah! Very clever! There is that new TV show coming out so maybe we will learn all of Alcatraz's secrets. I'm willing to accept door to Purgatory as a working theory.
ReplyDeleteI am always amazed at the number of comments a Supernatural article gets in 24 hours. During hiatus I guess everyone is looking of SPN info. Love Jason Dohring (need to watch Veronica Mars but he was awesome in Moonlight) and will be funny to see him as a god since he doesn't seem menacing, looking forward to how they will present the character. Want to see some pictures!
ReplyDeleteThat was when Cas teleported him.
ReplyDeleteIt is at the Earth's core at the moment so no worried :) but thanks! I totally called Sam not time travelling weeks ago and someone told me that I was insane to think that they would leave him out.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, it really started in S4 when the focus shifted to the angels and Sam basically became the actual plot. It might have "seemed" that he was important but really he could be replaced. It could have very well been a season of 'Dean, you need to stop Lilith from opening the gates by any means necessary' Oh wait! That was the theme that season
ReplyDeleteAre you talking about The Christmas Cottage, I rented that from netflix and loved it, went to amazon and bought it. Jared is so good in that and he had to learn to paint left handed.
ReplyDeleteCan't wait!!!
ReplyDeleteLOL, you liked him in Moonlight he is way better as Logan in Veronica Mars. Moonlight just did not use him enough and nothing I like better than Jason being snarky.
ReplyDeleteyes its been on lifetime alot this dec and on lifetime movie too I have to see it everytime and cry everytime he is so good in it and I love to see him do more. But he is staying on supernatural and thats great with me but they need sam to do more it really does suck why cant he go back in time and now I dean is getting a new girlfriend and that sucks because not one of the guys need one now ok. It just suck because I was thinking they was going to do more with sam thing and not a damn thing is happen or being more pissed off with the amy thing but not damn thing god I am missing souless sam god he was cool. It just making me alitte mad.
ReplyDeleteI actually liked season 4 and thought that was a good Sam year. There were some good episodes that told Sam's story, such as I Know What You Did ... , When the Levee Breaks, Lucifer Rising, and After School Special. In addition, his story was woven in scenes or comments consistently throughout the rest of the season. If you didn't get it, you just weren't paying attention. To me the shift came at the end of Season 5, when Sam's character went through a critical transition - he accepted that putting Lucifer back was going to cost him his life - and his point of view was reduced to a two-minute call to Bobby and a few meaningful looks as he prepared to confront Lucifer.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree. I hate that I'm even paying attention to which-character-gets-what. I've never done this with any other show, but this is much bigger than the time travel scene. I actually really don't care that much about these gimmicky types of episodes (time travel, meta, etc.). They can be fun, but I'm much more interested in the long-term character stories.
ReplyDeleteI've been waiting for the writers to pick up telling Sam's story again since season 5, and it's just not happening anymore. Things are done to his character, but we don't see how it affects him. How did his soullessness change who Sam is now? What is he thinking about his time in Hell and these hallucinations? How are these memories and hallucinations affecting his decision making process and the way he looks at life? What does he feel about the people (or lack of people) in his life? How does he see his future?
I know I should just accept that the show is no longer about two brothers but is now instead about one brother, but as someone else pointed out, it's hard to break old habits. If my history with other shows is an indication, I'll probably wake up one day and realize I just don't care anymore and stop watching the show and thinking about it. That hasn't hit yet, but I'm getting closer. What doesn't help is dismissive comments such as "Sam's the plot and Dean's the POV," or "Both sides are complaining, therefore shut up."
I'm not saying that there wasn't any Sam SL in S4 and some good scenes but his storyline was never told from his pov--always through how Dean viewed him, or Castiel, Ruby. And they didn't even established why/when he started on the demon blood. It was fans who came up with the idea that he probably started with it in the summer and stopped when Dean came back. I found it odd that come 4x16 he was juiced up again. Plus it just made him out to be a monster not just to Dean but also to the viewers because we never got Sam's side (ie emotions).
ReplyDeleteAnd a few comments and patchwork of scenes didn't work for me especially since supposedly Sam is one of the two leads. He felt more like a supporting character. And I would say that yeah WtLB was probably the one episode where we did get a chance to see his actual POV which wasn't filtered through another story or paralleled to the MOW such as ASS.For me it definitely became a lot worse in S5 so I do see your reasoning.
a really good comment and I really agree with you wholeheartedly
ReplyDeleteIt's the trend now in Supernatural and heck I'm just watching to see if they really do finally kill of Sam for good.
ReplyDeleteThere's definitely room for criticism with season 4. I guess I didn't have as many problems with it as other people did, but that was an important season to get Sam's story/POV out.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if Jared is happy about that acting -wise, but I would guess that less work for the same pay, and more time off with his wife would be okay with him. :-)
ReplyDeleteConsidering Season 7 is 1000x better than S6, without one character missing for half a season and waiting all season to discover that the 'bad guys' are Cass and Crowley and now that the long angels storyline that was drag for too long is now over, we should be happy IMO
ReplyDeleteI have a lot of respect for Jared and Genevieve and I support their marriage and pregnancy and soon to be parenthood, but I did not sign up to watch a show where one of the main characters is shoved off to the side. I didn't sign up for the Dean Winchester Show. I didn't sign up for the Sam Winchester Show. I signed up for Supernatural. A show about two brothers, their story together, their journey together and their bond and friendship and with the people that surround them and come in and out of their lives. I didn't sign up to watch only Jensen take the screen and Jensen get the good stories and Jensen got the dialogue and cool action scenes while Jared stands off in the background somewhere looking pretty. If the writers are seriously going that, I'm going to be sorely disappointed.
ReplyDeleteWell, it is steady pay and I think that we as viewers/fans tend to forget that a career as an actor is very hard since it usually doesn't involve a steady paycheck so when there is a job then an actor works. So yeah I think that he is okay with it plus he has said that he owes a lot to Supernatural so he is sticking with it. I dunno if that includes S8 and onwards.
ReplyDeleteHey, I was only joking about it. Sometimes it's better to laugh than to cry.
ReplyDeleteEverybody knows, even the stones, that Sam doesn't get enough screen-time and it's a disgrace.
Why this is, I don't know, for even a lot of the filler dialogue that falls to Dean could quite easily be spoken by Sam and I am the first to be angry about it.
I want to see the brothers together with equal time on screen.
There must be a reason for it, known only to the writers and maybe the actors.
I would be curious to know if Jared voices any objections, if he's allowed to, or even what Jensen thinks of it all, for even he must notice the discrepancy between the amount of lines they both have to deliver.
Perhaps some of those who manage to put a question to them at conventions etc. could ask.
I would be hard put to believe that they give him more time off because of his wife's pregnancy, that wouldn't seem very unprofessional!
It's not screen time and filler that's the issue. Being kidnapped by his stalker and being beaten up by clowns is plenty of meaningless filler. It's that no one seems to be putting any thought into developing his character story.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you here, instead of silly Becky stories, they could have investigated his Hell problems, they could have given us insights of what happened in the Cage, what happened to Adam, ....was Sam with him or did Michael protect him.
ReplyDeleteThere are many ways they could have gone.
They are professional writers and they could and should be more creative with both brothers' story-lines.
I will grant them one thing though. Kripke had five years ahead of him to develop the whole theme while the actual writers have to go year to year, not knowing if the show will be renewed.
In any case that doesn't absolve them from sloppy writing.
Jared doesn't seem the type to get hung up on the petty stuff, but 7 years is a long time to spend at any job. With a new baby, I imagine there's going to be somewhere else he'd rather be next year than a cold Vancouver set. He must have a good size nest egg from the past seven years to take some time off if he chooses.
ReplyDeletePersonally I like to see them have fewer scenes ever so often, after all acting on these kinds of shows is very hard. How would you like to do the same scene over and over and over and since I would love the show to stick around many years, don't want them to burn out. So I am fine with the show, and if I hated it as much as some of the "fan" that post here, I would stop watching.
ReplyDeleteYeah, of course and last I heard he and Jensen had only signed an additional two year contract at the end of S5 or was that S6?
ReplyDeleteIn any case, I think even though others might disagree with me that if Jared were to say that he didn't want to continue--then the show would end. It would be the same if Jensen said the same really. They can't do the show without Jared or Jensen as much as some fans would want that (ie Jared leaving and Jensen continuing as Dean hunting solo).
It will be interesting to see what happens at the end of the season in terms of S8
Never a truer word has been said,
ReplyDeleteIf the so called fans don't like the show then they should stop watching it.
That way they would feel better and so would we, as we wouldn't have to read some of the unking things they say about the show and about Sam and Dean.
HELL YES! you said it.
ReplyDeleteI do still love the show. What I don't love is how Sam's character is portrayed. Give Jared time off, whatever, but why neglect Sam's storyline? Why neglect Sam's PoV. It's not a matter of screentime or scenes or whatever, it's a matter of actually story/PoV/emotional focus on the character which we get little to none of. Just sayin'.
ReplyDeleteDon't you think your point has been made? Do you think all the whining is going to help? What did Dean tell Cass, Babies whine. I don't understand how you can say you "love the show" and find all these things wrong with it. Yes there have been some eps that are not my favorites, but still the show is awesome, the brothers are family and have each others back even in the worse of time.
ReplyDeleteAnd here we segway into the inevitable "if you don't like the show, don't watch" comments. People go to TV web sites not just to praise their shows but to vent when they're frustrated with something. If we banned all of the people who "whine" about Sam's POV not getting enough exposure, people who "whine" about Dean not having a mytharc, people who "whined" about Cas being killed off, people who "whined" last season about the angels still being on the show, people who "whined" about Becky being back, we would have about five people left on this board. ;)
ReplyDeleteThe Sam issue is a sore point for me too, and I'm sure I've annoyed people, as I've been annoyed by other people who went on and on with opinions I disagreed with. In defense of the Sam comments, I haven't seen one that tore down Dean to build up Sam. I can't say the reverse is true. Accusing people of "whining" is stepping into the area of criticizing other posters and other opinions, rather than criticizing the show. If it's bothering you that much, I would suggest stepping away from the boards for a while until you're more receptive to other people's opinions.
I agree; FTBYAM - like balance with the boys separated, but having important "experiences" of their own besides the task of getting back together again in combo with being very pleasantly surprised with the balance in story arc of "Clap..."with the boys together (a very funny "SF-like" episode)
ReplyDeleteyays!!!!! sooooo excited!!!! i do feel like every synopsis now is sam meeting an "old friend" or something like that.... but i love that!!! ;)
ReplyDeleteNot saying to ban anyone, but dang the point has been made many times, what good does it do to keep on the same thing? Everyone has a right to their point of view, but the same people with the same thing over and over, where does that get you.
ReplyDeleteThe issue of inequality keeps coming up because the show keeps treating the brothers differently. People here are responding to new news - that Dean will once again be the one time traveling even though he's already had two solo time-travel eps (In The Beginning and The End) whereas Sam has had none. There have been a couple of eps where Sam and Dean have time travelled together, but we've never seen Sam have an episode mostly to himself in an unusual in an displaced environment the way we have with Dean. Dean has also had the alt episode What Is and What Should Never Be mostly to himself as well. It's not time travel, but again, it's one character figuring out an alt environment on his own.
ReplyDeleteThe last ep of S6 was mostly Sam trying to put his memory back together and it was very good, loved the 3 Sams and Jared was awesome. I always liked him as Robo Sam, he really sold that character. I also would like them to move his story faster, but have enjoyed what they are giving me.
ReplyDeleteI'd make the argument that the episode was just as much, if not more, about Cas's transformation into God, but whatever. I'm glad you're happy with the Sam coverage but some of us haven't been. I'm someone who, when uphappy about something, I say it.
ReplyDeleteWow. You do not have to be so rude to me. I avoided pointing out that I was offended by you guys saying things like "Well if people are so unhappy and hate the show, they should just stop watching it." No, that's not the point. I don't hate the show. I'm disappointed with what's going on and I am MORE than entitled to feel that way if I damn well please. I never said the show sucked. It IS a good show. I can find things wrong with something, critique and still enjoy it and I shouldn't have YOU or anybody ELSE tell me that I can't still love the show and enjoy it if I find things to critique about it or find things in it that disappoint me. Now, if I were going around saying how much I hated it, that'd be different and that's not at all what I said. And for the record, yes, your post offended me. If you don't like my posts, then do me a favor, don't read them in the future. I'm MORE than entitled to express my opinion just like you and everyone else here without being condemned for it.
ReplyDeleteYeah I agree...I think that it is the degree to which you enjoy a season. Like Some hate the first seasons with a passion while others don't like the later ones.
ReplyDeleteYou do have a point. I guess that we'll find out come April or May when we get the notice about S8
ReplyDeleteI cannot wait for this one! Don't forget, Jason was on "Moonlight" as well. I wonder, who is the friend of Sam's since this episode deals with the past? I guess it could be one of a few childhood friends. Maybe Amy? The episodes that involve gods of any kind are always so awesome and the god of time should be great, too!
