Supernatural - Analyzing the Winter Promo + Theories

Dec 3, 2011

Hey, fellow hunters!

Almost a day passed since Supernatural's fall finale, which was one of the most touching in the series, and of Jim Beaver's best performances, IMO. Although the ending made me a bit upset (Leaving Bobby's fate hanging twice in a row?), the episode was still awesome (You can't go wrong with Rufus). Now we have to wait a whole freakin' month till our boys are back, so I decided to do analyze the promo of things to come.

First of all, though I'm sure you all saw it, the promo:

Now let's see what we got here...

JUST TO BE CLEAR - All of this is my speculation, nothing is official or confirmed. Some things are safe to assume, but that doesn't mean they're 100% true.

00:01 & 00:06 - (Is that the Impala?!) Pretty general, could be from any of the episodes.

00:04-00:05 - Judging by Dean's clothes, it's safe to assume he's the one going back in time in episode 12. Also, notice that yellow sign behind him, since it's shown a couple of times.

00:05 - Sam standing next to a metal gate with some mark on it.

00:07 - The guys kicking the door and Dean shooting is from the time travel ep

00:08 - Some kind of monster is attacking Sam (next to the gate from before)

00:08 - Time travel episode - Someone is grabbing Dean (Eliot Ness?)

00:09 - Dick shooting Bobby from HTWFAIM.

00:09 - Sam shielding from something (Yellow sign from earlier in the background)

00:10 - More Dean from time-traveling episode

00:11 - Someone in a zoot suit grabbing a homeless man, with both their faces glowing red

00:11 - Two females (I think the black-haired one is also a female) standing over an unconscious Sam.

00:12 - Sam thrusting an unknown person

00:12- Dean (I think) jumping (Yellow sign again).

00:13-00:15 - Could be from any episode (But not from the one in the beginning of the promo. The colors of Dean's jacket are different).

00:16 - A female monster (Vampire?) biting Sam.

OK, theory time:

- The scenes with the yellow sign are most likely taking place in the time-travel episode. But when we see Dean standing there at the beginning of the promo he's wearing different clothes than those when he jumps at the end (The black straps are gone). Is that the spot where he's being sent to the past \ back to the present?

- Also, can anyone make any words on that yellow sign? I could only make out 'Pacific' at 00:09 as the first word in the black part.

- Now Sam - That metal gate thing might be the back of a truck, 'cause you can see at 00:11 that he's lying between two trucks. I think that blonde monster chick attacks him at a truck stop or a factory or something, he tries to fight back with a knife, but she knocks him out. (You can see a knife on the floor at 00:11).

- About the black-haired woman standing next to the blonde - Is she the one who bites Sam at the end? maybe, but that's not the same scene as 00:11, 'cause she doesn't have the jeans jacket on.

- The time-travel episode - the scenes seem too random to make anything from them, except maybe that Dean's having a blast. However, it was said that Eliot Ness will turn out to be a hunter. I strongly believe that the guy who's grabbing the homeless man at 00:11 is some kind of life-sucking monster that Dean and Eliot will hunt.

- Last but not least, the Dick footage - I saw some speculations around the web that in the time-travel episode, the boys will go back and try to save Bobby from being shot. Quite possible, but it will kinda ruin the recent post-shooting touching episode's drama, wouldn't it?

Well, that's all I can get from this one. We'll probably be wiser when new ep synopses \ promos show up. What do you think?

Here's to a fast hellatius (Only a month to wait!), and I hope the new year's episodes will be as awesome as they look.

See ya!

  1. Very impressive, all the stuff you noticed and connected. Is the time travel to do with ridding the world of the Leviathans, do you think? I'm not going to miss them--including smarmy Dick--at all.

  2. Thanks. Not sure the time-travel ep will be Leviathan-related. I kinda like them.

  3. This is a great read/article.

Thanks for taking the time to do this. Helps the hiatus go a little quicker :)

  4. Thanks, glad you liked it :) Anything to help a fellow hunter go through the hellatius.

  5. Great article - I always find analyzing promos hard so its nice to have someone do it for me.

The red faced guy is tres creepy. I like the outfits. Thanks again!

  6. I don't know about avoiding Bobby from being shot, I haven't really thought about it, not the first time they showed something from the past in a promo, especially the second-part-of-the-season promo. I think they showed the explosion that killed Ellen and Jo in the promo for second part of S5 and I think another Second-part-promo of S5 also had a clip from the S5 premiere

Anyway we'll see...anything that could save Bobby is good for me :) I don't get why some people are so ''Bobby was dead at the end so there's no absolutely no way he can possibly come back'', it's Spn, maybe he will, maybe he won't, but its not a hospital show, some supernatural events can happen to change that

  7. I don't think they're going back in time to stop Bobby from getting shot, it would be an odd solution. Also why would going back to 1944 (i think thats the year they were saying) stop Bobby from getting shot in 2011?

  8. thanks!  I love the idea of Eliot Ness as a hunter - that would make so much sense haha.. and it's a great time to travel back to!  though Dean might go crazy with Prohibition.. ;)

  9. hope they dont bring bobby back sorry dont like the guy but the promo looks quite good

  10. Maybe they could leave a note in something that ends up in Bobby's house that warns him to DUCK! Maybe it is just wishful thinking.

  11. They did it last year when they went back to get the ash and Samuel Colt leaves the package for them.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Or maybe they decide to seek out Chronos to go back just a little into the past in order to save Bobby, but he decides to send them back further? IDK, there are a lot of possibilities.

  13. I'm still just so bummed that Sam doesn't get a solo time-travel ep.  I suppose I should have expected that Dean would get the story line, since Supernatural seems to have become almost entirely about Dean's POV (not a criticism of the character, just the writing).  But still, seeing as Dean's already had two solo time-travel eps on top of the shared time travel eps, one would think that Sam would FINALLY get a turn to bend the laws of physics a little on his own, seven seasons in.

  14. I agree with you on this. But I'm not surprised that it is Dean again. I just hope that Sam gets more than 5 minutes of screentime...

    ReplyDelete
  15. Very good analysis!! I just wonder how far in Supernatural time will 7x11 take place after 7x10

    ReplyDelete
  16. And hopefully his 5 minutes will be more than just plot device for Dean's story arc.  I'm really starting to feel like Sam has been reduced to a mere plot device as opposed to an actual character, which is sad seeing as he's SUPPOSED to be one half of the MAIN character group.  I hate that I'm at the point where I'm starting to resent the focus on Dean, because I LOVE Dean as much as I love Sam, but I'm starting to get annoyed every time we have some emotional or intense scene with him simply because of the total LACK of those types of scenes for Sam.  And I hate that!  Really, would it kill them to give Sam some POV?!  And don't even get me started on the total abandonment of his hell memories storyline...

    ReplyDelete
  17.  For me the boys are a team 50/50 and I hate to pick on one or the other but I too, am seeing a greater part of the scripts dedicated to Dean whereas Sam seems to be in shadow, and this has been going on from the second part of season six.
    It's getting  really noticeable.

I don't know what is going through the writers' heads but having the luck to have two such charismatic leads they should put them both to good use.

Dean has the part of the more "impulsive and dangerous" of the two and Sam the part of the "back-up and scholar/thinker/researcher" but that doesn't mean that Sam shouldn't get strong scenes too, showing off his complimentary talents to his brother's and giving us insights into his thoughts and feelings.

Sam is still a bottomless pit to explore.
He has all of his memories back so there is plenty of material for some Sam POV.

  18. I love time-travel episodes and this one reminds me of the Star Trek TOS episode I saw where Kirk goes back to that era.
It was such a moving episode so I hope this one will be as good as it's "ancestor."
Again, it's too early to make any founded comments but it definitely looks interesting.

You did a great job breaking down the promo, when I watch it, it just all seems a blur to me!

I don't think they go back because of Bobby, I think that will have been resolved either by his death or by being saved by brain-surgery.
Maybe it's to do with the numbers Bobby gave them, Ness might know something about them, a bit like the colt with Samuel Colt.

  19. Sam is a extension of Dean so in the writers mind give us Deans pov is giving us Sams . It isnt but that is how they see it.

    ReplyDelete
  20. You have a much better eye than I do. I thought the homeless man was Sam and never noticed the difference in Dean's and the woman's clothes. In the first, Dean looks like the overcoat of the time travel clothes.

Sam getting attacked may happen in the Babysitter episode since Meghan Ory said she was a working girl at a truck stop, and there's trucks there.

Also the car in :14 looks like the stirring wheel of the Impala. The earlier one looks like the temp. God I hope so. They left it too long.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I understand, but I think his hair would be a real problem writing it for him in that era. Though it would be a great excuse to force Sam to cut his hair off! (And leave the burns?)

    ReplyDelete
  22. Why? Sam has 1 and 2 and 3 and 5 and 6 season. Maybe enouhg? Always Sam, only Sam. I like him but...:/

    ReplyDelete
  23. I could say that in those seasons we got a lot more of Dean development over Sam development because Sam was only used as a plot device to get Dean somewhere in his development but nothing about Sam's inner thoughts/motivations which we "sort" of got from other characters' observations about him--in particular how Dean sees him.

I don't want to get into a fight over who gets more development/screen time but I do think that it is how one chooses how to view and watch the show- ie which brother is in the center (or not) for the viewer. That being said-- I  think all POVs are acceptable and there isn't one that is right over the other. Supernatural is a great show in that it can cultivate all these different opinions.

    ReplyDelete
  24. You're totally preaching to the choir here :)
I've come to the conclusion that this is how Supernatural wants to portray Sam and nothing we can do and say can change this.

Being really pessimistic here but I suppose  that the writers consider Dean to be the human aspect over Sam's supernatural aspect and therefore the audience can relate to him better.

It is really sad because I don't watch Supernatural purely for Dean NOR for Sam but the two of them together and I haven't seen brother SL equality since probably S3 in my opinion and even then it wasn't completely equal but it was less noticeable.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Seriously?  I mean, you're entitled to your opinion, obviously, but I have to wonder if we're watching the same show.  First of all, season three was all about Dean's deal and Dean going to hell - I would call that a Dean story arc. Season six is HARDLY a Sam season, considering that Sam was essentially NOT IN THE SHOW for the first HALF of the season.  I'm sorry, but I don't count his soulless shell as "Sam".  So for anyone who loves Sam, we had half a season WITHOUT him.  Hardly "all about Sam".  And even when it IS Sam's story, we see it ALL from Dean's POV.  How does DEAN feel about Sam's powers?  How does DEAN feel about Sam's addiction?  Etc.  I mean, we never SEE the story from Sam's POV, with the exception of a very few eps.  Sam may get story arcs, but Dean gets ALL the POV in addition to his own story arcs.  And now, Sam's story arc about his memories of hell have been put on the back burner to focus on Deans emo story arc.  Sam is damn near skipping gleefully through meadows of daisies, somehow totally cured of his debilitating memories of over a century in the worst part of hell so that we can talk about how "guilty" Dean feels.  It's not only implausible, it's ridiculous and very frustrating for those of us who have been waiting for a pay-off, story-wise, for having Sam GONE for half a season.  We were promised character development for him, and instead we're re-hashing the same old story line of Dean feeling bad about himself.  And my original point was that Sam has NEVER had a solo time-travel ep.  Dean HAS.  Multiple times.  Sam has also never had a hospital scene.  Dean has.  Multiple times.

It's NOT "always Sam", not by a long shot.  It's it's NEVEr "only Sam".  We get "only Dean" often enough, but never "only Sam."  And I don't WANT "only Sam" or "only Dean", I want BOTH brothers, having equal story and equal POV.  Because all the story arcs in the world are pointless if we NEVER get to see Sam's POV, his inner feelings/thoughts/reactions to what's happening to him.  He just becomes a plot device, not an equal character, and that's NOT fair.

  26. Some of you fans ( Not all, and not naming names. ) seriously need a better grip on reality. rehashing the SAME talking points of this brother VS the other brother. Seriously? Can't you just enjoy the show? It is about 2 brothers, not your favorite. Although as the story has progressed the situations they find themselves in stretch the bounds of fiction ( Somewhat. ) the writers are finding themselves in new territory and rehasing old. The concept of "ret-conning" is a gripe for many fans it seems but adding to the story is a natural progression of writing.

At least be thankful that no matter what the show is still on the air. Although I think it should have ended at season 5 the way it was meant to, as Sam sacrifices himself to save the world and Dean can finally settle down to a normal life without hunting.  I liked what Bobby said about them being heroes. Enjoy the duo because they make the story what it is. 2 Brothers, hunting evil, saving the world. I still love this show!

    ReplyDelete
  27. On a side note I hope that it is Dean that ENDS Dick Roman. I love this show but killing Bobby off the way they did just sucks. Even though the writers have said the show is about the boys, the car and where ever they are and what ever they are hunting.

I do not think Bobby will be back. They really cannot bring him back, where Castiel is a different matter. I believe he will return but I also think they could use that tired Deus Ex Machina again and have Castiel resurrect Bobby. I am curious to know how they will finally kill the Leviathins, if this goes to a season 8 they are going to need to wrap the story up and officially have the boys retire from hunting.

  28. BTW love the article!

    ReplyDelete
  29. wow, I think you're the first person I've come across that doesn't like Bobby haha.. I'm not happy that he's gone (I think he kind of has to be after the way they ended things), especially since Sam and Dean have lost so much already, but I think they sent him off really well.. one last "hunt", one last chance to save the boys

    ReplyDelete
  30. Thanks for the breakdown. It was impossible for me to decipher it all. Glad someone could :)

    ReplyDelete
  31. You know I'm happy season 5 (Swan Song) wasn't the end. I mean if Sam had went to heaven after the sacrifice it would have been OK. Then he would have at least finally found some peace, and Dean would have maybe even be able to live with himself.  Not to mention they could have possibly even seen each other again (as soulmates or with the help of Ash).
However, Sam in the Pit with Luci and Michael forever, and Dean drinking himself to an early grave or doing sth stupid again like another deal, is IMO a lousy ending for the characters.
And I think Kripke even wanted them both to jump in, if the show hadn't been renewed. Well, then they would have been together, but I believe neither of them deserved Hell for eternity.

"Carry on my wayward sonThere'll be peace when you are doneLay your weary head to restDon't you cry no more"

  32. Well I for one am happy to see Dean go back in time.  Can't wait to see this episode.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Very interesting. I have two main hopes for the upcoming episodes. One, of course, is that we GET THE IMPALA BACK. I miss it. It isn't right for it not to be around. They'd better bring it back soon! And also that, for the time travel ep, either Sam goes back in time alone, or the boys go back together. I'm gonna be irritated if they send Dean back alone. He's already been back by himself twice. XP And Sam never has. So either him by himself, or the boys together (which is always the best option, imo!)

    ReplyDelete
  34. So, I commented before, but I have to again to share the really weird idea I had. (Which Im sure is completely wrong, but hey, it's all speculation at this point!) What if Bobby did move on, but got reincarnated or brought back as a little kid? :P
