Wow that was a finale definitly worth watching and the show to me definitly deserves a season 2! I will just summarize what ever i liked and comes to me first! A great ending with the mysterious ship piece my guess is that with Shannons escape, the fire and the portal being destroyed somehow it may have created a rift. But its possible they found this ealier before it went down and in that case im not sure. But the writers better have a good idea for this if there going with maybe adding things from the ealier centurys. I actually liked josh in this lol i usually dont like him. Man I just love skye and im so happy that she didn’t die! Shes better then the Shannon kids put together lol! I was surprised kind’ve by wash’s death but I thought it was no offense going to be someone more important like the producers stated. Lucas is alive! That kid just wont die and go to hell! The mom is awesome as was Malcolm and im glad they were involved in this. The scene where Shannon can barely hear everyone was very instense and I applaud the writers on finding a way to skip 3 days of the conquering! It definitely saved time and did better. Jim and taylor were at there best and my favorite part with jim was the battle in the future and against the dino and with taylor against his sun with help from skye. The phoenix group (or the 100 people that’s left over at least) are probably led my mira now and she I bet will want some revenge since she may have lost her daughter forever and I bet she’ll take it out on Shannon more then taylor. They are going to the badlands and I figure that’s very bad for terra nova. This show is very good on its center idea. Time. The characters, the story, the struggles all circle around time which makes the show very smooth. I truly love this show and I hope it comes back.
It was ok, not as bad as some episodes and not as good as a 2-hour finale should be.
The finale had far less action than I think it should have. It really felt like they ran out of money and cut corners to keep going. Like the opening battle as one example.
It all just felt like one cliche after another all night. The bomb comes through the portal and the battle is over so cut to the future. The Phoenix Group wants to detonate a bomb so of course they disarm it with no time to spare. So that the Shannons can escape Washington sacrifices herself. Then the same self-sacrifice on a larger scale as the Terra Nova rebels blew up the portal stranding themselves in the past. There had to be a father-son show down so it was inevitable that Lucas escaped from Skye. The mandatory scene of our hero running mere feet in front of an explosion without getting a mark on him was there too. Excuse me, he was running from not just an explosion but a Carno too! XD
It felt like a junior high school student wrote the finale. No offense meant to student writers anywhere! Plus the Washington sacrifice was meaningless since I did not care about her at all. The entire series they spent too much time on the Shannon family to really get to know or care about anyone other than Taylor, Malcolm, Skye and the Shannons. On top of that the new Phoenix Group not using the Sixers to their advantage was just ridiculous! They knew the Terra Nova group best, they knew this new (old) world best and they are not the people you would want to alienate be simply forgetting about them.
There were some fun parts like Dr. Shannon tricking the new guy into freeing Shannon, a few good one-liners here and there, the 2149 VFX were decent and the mystery of what lies in the "Badlands" was mildly intriguing.
All in all the finale felt flat just like the entire season. Bad writing with mediocre (at its best moments) VFX made a good premise almost forgettable. I stand by my initial thoughts on the series. FOX knew it had a bomb on its hands, but spent so much money creating said bomb they needed to recoup whatever they could by airing every of the season anyway.
Just think on this, If they do greenlight a second season there is no way that FOX will spend as much as they did this time around aftert Season One had such low ratings. So they VFX will be even worse the next time around! XD
Looks like Terra Nova is going to "go Pern" for the near future ... good move! It was a very satisfying season finale that left enough new mysteries for S2 if TN is renewed with enough closure if it's not.
This show may not be the best new show on TV, but I have to say that was one exciting two hour finale. So many things about that episode were great, it was just a fun action packed two hours. Yes this show has some flaws and needs a little work, but I really hope they renew this for a second season.
It had some really great scenes, I wasn't expecting it to jump a few days to see the aftermath of the Phoenix group invasion, but I liked the way they did it a lot. It was kind of sad that Cara (Kara?) didn't make it, especially after Josh went through so much to get her there. Loved seeing the townspeople uniting together to take them down, but poor Washington, great last words however.
I liked the fact that they cut themselves off from Hope Plaza, it adds a little more fear of survival and doesn't make it seem like they're living there as easy as they were. Not sure how I liked that cliffhanger with the ship though, but I hope we get to see how it plays out. Oh, and poor Mira, I have a feeling she'll have quite a vendetta on Jim now.
I get what you mean about the whole cutting corners by getting rid of that first battle, but I thought they did it nicely, I felt it had a more dramatic effect by surprising us with Jim waking up and the battle already being lost then by getting to the same point by showing us a losing battle.
Best ep of the season, and I liked it a lot, but I felt that there was somethings lacking, mainly in the writing as I felt that Lucas, although a good villain played it a bit over the top and cartoonish at times. I also didn't buy that the reason that Lucas hates his father so much is that Taylor choice him to live instead of his mother. I thought that it would be more devastating. I also didn't understand that the Phoenix group didn't utilize the SIxer's knowledge of the land on where the rebels could be, as I'm sure that they probably knew just about all the habitable areas that were close. I did like the new mystery of the "badlands" (I'm thinking that there are other fractures there - like the other end of the Bermuda Triangle, etc), but I'm curious as to how the Weaver guy knew about the place, as even Mira/Lucas didn't seem to know what was out there... I was bummed that Wash was sacrificed, and just reinforced that Lucas needs to become carno chow, but that hopefully will happen in S2.
I gotta agree with pretty much everything you said. I groaned every time there was another obvious cliche. I was groaning so much, my wife thought I was sick. The overly dramatic music for even minor scenes didn't help either.
For me, the only high point was the 30 seconds about the badlands at the end.
All season long they have done that overdone music thing! I keep wanting to tell movie and TV producers that if a scene is not dramatic because it is not well executed (due to writing, direction or acting), then adding overdone music on top of it will not help the scene! It just makes it MORE obvious!
For some reason they think the emotional music will make a person feel emotional even if the scene is flat! XD
I like the Bermuda Triangle theory too, It was my second thought. My first was a Planet of the Apes feeling that they were not in the past but in the future. XD
I think if they bring in the Triangle elements it is going to feel a lot more campy and like something Sir Arthur Conan Doyle might write. Less Terra Nova and more Lost World.
I happened to like The Lost World, but I liked it for what it was - a cheaply made campy adventure series.
Terra Nova had the potential to be so much more than that, but after this lackluster season I cannot see them renewing it only to go more campy.... I hope not!
I agree,we had to wait two hours to see a spark of creativity,a glimpse of what could possibly be an exciting storyline.I wish they brought that up sooner, they might of captured as audience willing to put up with the campy crap! :)
I rated it poor, and boy it sure was!..They could have condensed it to a one hour finale, they really didn't need two hours.Yes there was a few glimpses of good writing, but it mostly fell flat..
The one part that really struck me was unfortunately the ending,FINALLY there was something that caught my interest. The Badlands! So okay,i will even forgive the crappy one hour and forty five minutes worth,no,how about the crappy season as a whole if we can find out about the Badlands. Why doesn't the Sixers know about it? Did i miss something?I admit i was out of the room for awhile, what say i say?
I feel cheated,it could have been a good show,it was just to slow a sloth is faster than the way this story moved....I would love to know more about the Badlands, why did they abandon everything, they just up and left, heading north. Why didn't the sixers ever explore the land? Why didn't the writers bring this in during the season? Bad planning, bad writing..well it really is to bad,it could have been something! .....
When they were opening the box, my wife said "That better not be a piece of the statue of liberty." I was thinking Bermuda.
I too hope they don't go with Bermuda Triangle. My fear is that the second season would be largely filler as they battle the sixers and twelvers just to have that be the "surprise twist" in the season finale. It would be quite a disappointment. This season started with mysterious writings on cliff faces. The explanation turned out quite boring.
They have potential to do something interesting here, so I hope they don't spoil it by shoe-horning some existing tired mythology into it.
I loved the finale. I've been luke warm about the series all season, but this pulled me in. A lot of seasons don't really get good until the second season. I think networks are too quick to cancel shows. They should give them a little bit longer to work out the problems.
I completely agree about networks NOT giving series enough time to find themselves.
However, this may be the one case where I think if they cancel after one season they are in the right. The cost on this series is so overwhelming that it cannot be looked at like most series. I'm not sure the ratings justify a new series, but I guess FOX will make that call.
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.
now more than ever i want a season 2!!!

Silly producers....
"Carno chow" made me LOLz.
ReplyDeleteIt was my first thought when I saw the ship, but then the Bermuda Triangle has been tied into so many SciFi/Fantasy books and shows it is a cliché as well. Sir A.C. Clarke could teach them a trick or two: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Time's_Eye_(novel)
ReplyDeleteI gotta admit, I like the story, but its been so poorly executed in most ways, I can't see it being renewed.
I like the Bermuda Triangle theory too, It was my second thought. My first was a Planet of the Apes feeling that they were not in the past but in the future. XD

Yep, on first watch I got the feeling of Planet of the Apes as well and think it will be more interesting.
ReplyDeleteHowever the Bermuda Triangle story would in theory keep hope alive that there is a way to travel between timelines etc

The two last episodes of season 1 proved there's room for a season 2. The pending plots are intriguing enough.
