I liked the season, not the best not the worst. Definitely been waiting for that final scene for a few seasons though. Looking forward to some of the storylines they set up for next season.
Damn, what a great way to end an otherwise really ridiculous season. Deb's story arc was the best thing all season, and it ended with *SPOILER* (just in case this pops up in "recent comments" lol) her about to profess her love for him in a way he'd understand, and she finds him murdering her murder suspect. It's the best thing that could've come out of this season... :D
This season as a good season. I'd say this is my second "least" favorite finale. (Season 3 had the weakest because the big bad was gone before the finale.) But it was Dexter. Dexter at its "worst" is still better then most network shows >:)
Loved the episode, even though I didn't think this season was all that great, a not so great season of Dexter is still a great season of television.
So glad Deb finally found out, even though it kind of seemed predictable, but what else could they do. Hopefully this makes her not love him in that way anymore, I find that just to be creepy, I'd hate for them to end up together next season in a similar relationship to Dexter and Lumen.
Also, I love how they tease us with the hand and Dexter doesn't even get to see it, hopefully setting up another good storyline for next season other then the Dexter/Deb one.
A lot of people think this season was not very good or maybe repetitive, but I am of a different opinion. This season was the MOST NEEDED season of Dexter so far!
Looking at Dexter as one story from Season 1 Episode 1 to Season 8 Episode 12 this season and in particular this finale marks the beginning of the end. The evolution of Dexter from confused to content. Deb from not understand anything to understanding things she tried to hide from herself and then in the finale, understanding things Dexter has been trying to hide from everyone. This was a vital chapter to the story and as the pivotal moment in the series. I loved it.
I am still not a fan of LaGuerta, Batista or Masuka plot lines. Every season it goes in circles and I know they are just background players on a show about Dexter, but it's time they get dynamic interesting stories that are integral to the seasonal arc.... or just lesson their roles completely and make them featured extras already.
This season had been great... Taken by itself it may have been "worse" than say Season 1 or 4, but I think it was more valuable to the series than almost any Season so far outside of Season One.
On a lighter note I LOVE that the season about faith ends with Dexter saying "Oh God!" XD
Since the series has been renewed for two more seasons, I guess its safe to assume that Deb, for at least the short term, keeps his secret. What would be really smart, however, would be to have Dexter either imprison or eliminate Deb, and frame the entire scene as Travis killed Deb, Dexter kills Travis or something to that effect, because its going to be very hard from a credibility standpoint, for Deb to allow Dexter to go on with business as usual for another two seasons. I would hate to see Deb go, but that seems like the only logical choice given the great ending this season and she's the only one that knows as of now. But they could always play it as it was just a daydream and then Dexter wakes up and actually kills Travis.....LOL
Yeah they definitely made it clear that Dexter has come to an end exploring religion for himself. The really religious people who already crucify this show would have a heart attack watching the last three minutes (a.k.a. the kill scene), but I thought that the writers did a brilliant job merging the religious themes all season and Dexter's final conclusion that he's a serial killer and that there's no redemption to be found in God for him.
The writing in particular was very sharp and drew sharp contrast between what religion expects and what Dexter is all about. Being a former Catholic, I couldn't help but grin at the line, "I am a father, I am a son, I am a serial killer."
I'm thinking more along the lines of Deb not being able to handle seeing what she did/her feelings for Dexter/moving forward and it will end up with her killing herself.
I thought that the writing has been all over the place this season. And the Gellar "twist" I saw coming from MILES away... I really liked the ritual/display of the victims, because they were definitely well-done and insane enough for this show, but in my opinion otherwise Travis was a weak villain...Quinn and Batista spun the tires in dumbass land all season, and LaGuerta did what she always does best: mindf*ck the audience. I remember in seasons 1-3 I was like "One minute she's really good and she's competent and helpful, and the next...the bitch has an ulterior motive!" So for her to be so good to Deb was pretty much what I was expecting/hoping out of her...At least the slightest bit of redemption for her bitchiness so she's not on my "needs to die now" list... Meanwhile, the end of the episode left the Louis/ITK hand thing in the wind...I suppose for next season. Overall my opinion of this season was this: Everyone (even Dexter at times) annoyed the hell out of me, except Deb. Her rise to lieutenant was the saving grace of season 6. She was incredible in every episode, and Jennifer Carpenter NEEDS an emmy for this season. BADLY. Her going through all this change on the sidelines while we're off with Dexter chasing ghosts and mourning Mos Def (who died too early in my opinion) was awesome when compared to the main story of the season. Sure I was still mildly entertained by most of it, because it's still Dexter, but much like another one of my favorite shows, it seems that Dexter has been losing it the last 2 years. The fact that the last scene makes everything completely worth it all is great though. I say this will make for an excellent season 7. :)
I don't think that Dexter would do that to Deb. I don't think he COULD do that. He's known all along that eventually he would be found out. He's had nightmares about her finding out about him (and they end up with HIM being killed, not her)...I just don't think it would go that route.
Agreed on your breakdown of the cast this season. Well, not Dexter himself for me. I thought he was entertaining all season long. I called the "Gellar Twist" in the first episode. So waiting for it to play out was almost annoying. I did debate it a couple of times, but I kept going back to we never saw anyone interact with Gellar other than Travis.
I really wish they would have kept Mos Def alive longer if not brought him in as Dexter's new friend. If for no other reason than to take face time away from one of the other annoying supporting cast members! XD
I wish they would have stayed true to the first Dexter book and killed oof LaGuerta. She has been annoying from beginning to end and not in that fun "I love to hate her" way either!Season Five was my second or third favorite season honestly.I loved it. Only Season One was much better than it in my eyes. It was either equal to or just behind Season Four for me. But unlike many I read on the site, I loved Julia Stiles all season long..
This season would probably rate behind 1, 4 and 6 for me but ahead of 2 and 3. I hate comparing the seasons though honestly. It ends up coming down to which "Big Bad" was better than the others to most people and I think the "Big Bad" each season is the secondary story behind how Dexter evolves in each season.
This ending is at least one season too late. At this point it is just comical. The Dexter version of the Miami Police force is completely full of idiots. That ending didn't make up for a more then pointless season. Dexter was so careless all season, but for some reason Deb decides to go back to the church without back up, why? Come on. Forced and terrible writing. I "can" wait for the next season, hopefully I forget this one and start with a fresh outlook.
In some sense, I am a little disappointed. Not because of non super natural events, but that the main event wasn't enough for me. I was expecting more to happen to all of the characters and not just be a revelation between Deb and Dexter.
I think my problem is that I have stared to read to the books and to me, this revelation is something so already apart of Lindsay's novels, and it isn't novelty to me, but something expected, minus Deb's feelings for Dexter.
On the other hand, I was on the edge of my seat through most the episode. Colin Hanks, especially in the past 3 episodes, has really scared the heck of me and my hairs stood on end when he took Harrison.
One interesting facet is that Harry didn't appear during the episode at all. I don't know what that would mean, except that maybe Dexter didn't have time to conspire and perhaps becoming 'the other persona' requires a need to plan ahead??? --So maybe in some sense Dexter was more genuine/honest which is why he made more mistakes.
But looking at what was left behind...I could see how season 7 could be more eventful.
Clearly we're left with Debra's discovery, in which I got say, what an interesting reaction. There was no screaming, no saying, "No!", just a gasp with possible shock, but know movement. So she will have to decide if she will let this one go or not...or if the hunt begins....
I had been waiting for Quinn to have some excuse to back to the season 5 jerk is really is. At the beginning of the season, Quinn gets mad at Deb for not accepting his proposal, but he immediately goes to Dexter to accuse him of telling Deb not to Marry him, which despite Dexter's clear feelings about that ("Harrison's Uncle, over my dead body."), Dexter didn't tell Deb what to do, but Quinn says, "She picked you over me?" and Dexter replies, "She didn't pick either of us." and Deb announces herself as Lieutenant....Depending on how Deb reacts to Dexter's hobby, it does appear that Deb would have chosen Dexter over Quinn.
LaGuarte too in the first season made a pass at Dexter, but was rejected. But deep down I think she still regrets what happen go Doakes. Imagine LaGuarte learning of the truth...and both catching wind of a Dexter and Deb relationship...I think it could be disastious.
As for Anderson. I have know clue what his purpose is.
I heard an interesting theory about Lewis Green on Dexter's facebook page yesterday...Some fans speculate that he could be ITK's son. I like the idea and think that could have the writers take a few more elements from the novels.
I wouldn't dismiss Greene. He has been paralleled to Brain too much to not be important. Sadly, except with Jamie, he keeps getting rejected everywhere he goes...I don't how much rejection Mr. Greene can take---but it's clear he is still reaching out to Dexter. (He sent the hand)
Holy freakin crap!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I really wonder how that ending is gonna play out next season. Do we seriously have to wait almost a year to find out??????????????
Well, I liked season 5 a lot more than most people did. And I liked Julia Stiles as well. When I said that Dexter annoyed me, it was because the story was too easy to follow and he was being manipulated by someone or something, etc. while the Dexter I know from pre-season 4 wouldn't have been so easily fooled or victimized at certain points in the season.
I am officially out, I loved you show for 5 years but this season has been rubbish, appalling and predictable and the latest so called shocking twists boring. Bye.
Deb went to the church because she knew Dexter was gonna be there (or at least hoped so since she told him earlier to go check it out for one last time) and she wanted to talk to him alone to tell him that she loves him. I'm pretty sure the last thing Deb would want is back up coming with her when she expresses her love to Dexter lol.
What this season lacked as far as entertainment value, it made up for by pushing the overall narrative of the show forward and setting up the final act for the entire series. It may not have been a thrill ride, but it was necessary, purposeful, and vitally important.
What I liked best about what this season accomplished is that for the remainder of the series it elevates the Debra character to someone who will furthermore be just as (if not more) important to the show as Dexter.
Deb and Dexter won't have their own separate storylines anymore. Not major ones, anyway. These two will be inextricably linked and will share the "A story" for the final two seasons. I really can't see it any other way. This change will be great for the show.
Ha! I had a thought along those lines earlier this season. Actually, it was more of a wish than a thought.
I've been hoping that after Deb finds out about Dex there would be a story about LaGuerta setting Deb up to ruin her career (or worse) that would necessitate Dexter stepping in to fix the situation. I'd just like to see Deb cussing out LaGuerta while she's strapped to Dexter's table.
It's an unfortunate side effect of "the big bad" concept. If you're going after one guy for an entire season, chances are that you're not going to be killing as many people as you would otherwise.
It was a bit surprising to me too, but after some thought it makes some sense... maybe.
I think that even though I always looked at Harry as ingrained in every part of Dexter's subconscious, in fact he was the specific self-doubt and self-hate aspects. Since Dexter learned to accept himself for who he is during the season, in that context it makes sense that Harry did not make an appearance. Dexter was no longer lecturing or berating himself via Harry and his code.
I think you're definitely right on that part, but I just pictured him appearing to Dexter when he was floating just to berate him for getting in that situation, it would have been perfect.
It was a mistake on his part, considering it could easily be explained by Deb calling his house and being told where he is by Jaime. He told her that he had some work to do for Deb. If Deb called and was told his "excuse", she of course would have thought that he's at the church. Which he was.
poor episode, great ending. every line before killing Travis gave mi chills, like "father and son and a serial killer"... and also I like the cliffhanger, because Debra saw the killing and nothing can change that fact. of course, Dexter might explain himself and make up some touching story about Harrison, but no matter what, Debra saw him. He got caught. Unfortunately she didn't hear anything about other killings, but it's a matter of time now. and that would be all. Louis... who the hell is Louis? what about the hand? Masuka's and Batista-Quinn's storyline was interesting through the season, but in fact led to nothing... even the idea with Harrison was predictable. He couldn't die.
I have to say that I found this to be worst season of Dexter to-date including season 5 which I was not a big fan of A) Poor Writing, I felt the generally story arch was poor and was not sufficient for 13 episodes. I also felt that the writing was lazy this season in general B) Bad Editing....Pretty all over the place/lazy this season C) Big Bad- Was terrible! It was always going to be either great or terrible when they decided to go the religion route but there was nothing really original or even a twist. It was run of the mill stuff! D) Debra beening in the love with Dexter! I just don't see it. I hate the idea and find it really annoying and off putting! Plus why go there when the two leads involved are newly divorced.... This is the one that really push it into the worst season yet.The only reason I might watch it next season is that whole Debra finding out
Definitely the weakest Dexter finale so far. A pity, the season started off interesting and got pretty boring after that. Dexter has been very careless the entire season. First letting a serial killer know who he is and work together with him and then finishing him off at a crime scene. Usually he's doing it at secluded places, but at a crime scene there's always the chance someone might show up even if it's rather small. Disappointing season for me.
We know Dexter has been renewed for 2 more seasons, so it's safe to assume she won't turn him in.
I just hope those 2 lab geeks Masuka had this season are somehow involved in the end-game. They were some of the most interesting characters on the show ever although that might not be too hard considering people like LaGuerta or Batista.
I keep having this strange feeling that Quinn and LaGuerta are going to eventually team up against those two...Both those characters despite being opposites in appearence, both share some deep seeded hate...
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.
wow dexter broke the number 1 rule dont get cought. I still think the whole deb is in lover with dexter kind creepy...
ReplyDeletewhoa! now the wait and let the speculation begin.
ReplyDeleteI liked the season, not the best not the worst. Definitely been waiting for that final scene for a few seasons though. Looking forward to some of the storylines they set up for next season.

I completely agree! I loved though when he had Travis in that back and was like 'Is that my shirt?' I could not stop laughing.

ReplyDeleteI loved that line too.

ReplyDeletesee the intern not coming back in season 7 just like the irish nanny, lol.
ReplyDeletecoz the writers are trolls like that.
Why Deb go back to the church?? I don't understand that part
ReplyDeleteBut the END OM*G!!!!!!
Finally but i wish it happened last season
because she asked him earlier in the ep to go back & go over it again & he told her he would do it after the harrison thing :)
ReplyDeleteI loved this finale, though the season was not the best. I just don't get how Dexter injected himself with animal tranq and didn't really go down ?
ReplyDeleteOh yeah right I forgot !!!
ReplyDeleteThanks :-)
In some sense, I am a little disappointed. Not because of non super natural events, but that the main event wasn't enough for me. I was expecting more to happen to all of the characters and not just be a revelation between Deb and Dexter.

ReplyDeleteI'm with you on season 5. I liked almost every aspect of season five except for the LaGuerta / Batista story.
ReplyDeleteExactly. Well said....
ReplyDeleteMaybe they can start by killing LaGuerta? XD
Agreed. I think Deb is going to be doing a lot of rationalizing between now and the end of next season in order to cope with all of this.
ReplyDeleteI did briefly wonder why he didn't pop up in the finale.
ReplyDeleteNo that's true!.
ReplyDeleteI think we had as many killings and death tableaux as normal, but they were done by Travis....
Ha! I had a thought along those lines earlier this season. Actually, it was more of a wish than a thought.

ReplyDeleteDisappointing season for me.
ReplyDeleteI keep having this strange feeling that Quinn and LaGuerta are going to eventually team up against those two...Both those characters despite being opposites in appearence, both share some deep seeded hate...
ReplyDeleteCause there wasn't really animal tranq in the needle....
ReplyDeleteI think I could get behind a storyline like that.
