Just finished my conference call with Colin Morgan, it was mainly to promote the starting of Season 4 on Syfy, so much of it was already known to those that follow the BBC broadcast. He did however have a few things to say about the finale on Saturday.
Asked about the finale shaping up to be pretty epic and if there could be any heart ache ahead, he replied that there could well be a few” tears of joy” shed by the viewers at “iconic scenes”. There are some “huge, epic moments visually” he teased, alluding to when Arthur will draw Excalibur from the stone. But this joy could well be cut short as we will be left with a huge cliffhanger. “I think it is the most intriguing ending we have probably ever had, that will leave a lot of questions of where we’re gonna go in Season 5”.
For those hoping that Arthur finds out about Merlin’s magic, I’m afraid it seems that Colin hinted that might not be the case this year. “At this stage, if Merlin was to tell him had magic, he would no doubt be executed or exiled for his betrayal” he said. He went on to explain that being a servant is the best thing for Arthur to think of him, it means that he is no threat and can help secretly for now. As soon as he knows that he won’t grow to become Uther then it will be OK to tell him.
As soon as I get the transcript through I will post that too, there are some great personal reflections on the season. Such as working with Ben Daniels (Tristan) and Miranda Raison (Isolde) being a favourite moment, how his ideal (yet unrealistic) guest star would be Paul Newman and how much he would love to do a flashback episode that showed Uther banning magic.

Great! Looking forward to the transcript.
ReplyDeleteI've always wanted a flashback episode of the Great Purge, but I don't see that happening.
That's very interesting. Colin Morgan gives the most interesting interviews. I only hope season 4's finale will give Merlin the chance to show to the king how important Merlin is, even if there is no reveal at the moment. And I totally agree with Colin about the right time to reveal it. It's just that with or without reveal, Merlin should get more recognition for his huge "saving the day" moments. Thank you.
ReplyDeletethanks! looking forward to more
ReplyDeleteI'd love something as important being covered with a film, rushing a story like that could very easily destroy it imo.
ReplyDeleteFrom what I've heard Arthur will be at his lowest having lost the kingdom, so Merlin sets up the sword in the stone as a way of boosting his confidence. I have a feeling that it will be Emrys that actually does this thou, that's why I think we see old Merlin in the promo.
ReplyDeleteI can't believe Merlin's ending on a huge cliffhanger this season. It never does. But it sounds exciting! And probably waiting's gonna be even worse than usually!
ReplyDeleteI know, and this is the first I've heard of a cliffhanger being mentioned at all, very different behaviour for the show. I can't help feeling it has to do with Merlin's magic, either Morgana finds out that he is Emrys or one of the others (Gwen or Gwaine most likely) must find out.
ReplyDeleteColin Morgan = nerdgasm <3
ReplyDeleteIF the spoilers floating around are accurate, Arthur finds out. Maybe Colin was up to some misdirection in the interview? Saying Merlin won't expose his powers to throw us off the track... Hmmmm....
ReplyDeleteYeah, I did wonder if it was a bluff. I mean, we've had the episode where Arthur accepts that the Druids were treated wrongly this year, and surely the pulling of Excalibur out of the stone must be telling....
ReplyDeleteI think watching the trailer to the last Episode Agravaine Finds out. And plus i have a feeling that Maybe Merlin saves Gwen when Morgana almost kills Gwen (In the fight when shes pointing the sword towards Gwen)
ReplyDeleteI also think that it wont be Merlin guiding Arthur towards the stone but "Emrys"
Sadly i dont think that Arthur will find out for a while as it will ruin the tension of "Keeping the magic secret." Its way too early. (:
It's assuredly because they know for a fact that there will be a fifth series; hence, they can afford to have a between-season cliffhanger. :-)
ReplyDeleteThey have always known that the next season is in the bag thou and have never done one before :)
ReplyDeleteoooo, yes, Merlin saving Gwen with magic would be fantastic :)
ReplyDeleteThe idea for a flashback showing magic being outlawed (and a younger gaius having to adapt) would be great. They could even show maybe a dragon/dragonlord or two etc, there is so much material they can use.
ReplyDeleteI think if they are going to have their first real cliffhanger they have a reason for doing it.
ReplyDeleteIn that sense I can see Merlin's magical ability coming out. It would be the biggest dynamic shift in the series and it is one of the few things I can think of that would truly be cliffhanger worthy now that Uther is Dead.Go big or go home I say!
I've just seen this - http://www.scifinow.co.uk/blog/merlin-season-5-secrets/
ReplyDelete"There’s a surprising twist at the end of this series that becomes a big part of series five. It’s fair to say that a character we've met before returns, an evil character, and I think people can probably guess who that is."
:O
I know, I've gotten quite excited by the idea, which isn't necessarily a good thing :\ lol
ReplyDeleteAlso looking forward to the script! I really would like some kind of reveal but doubt that it will be Arthur, particularly after what Colin said (okay he might try to put people off the trail, but I don't think Arthur is ready for another blow to his confidence after Morgana, Agravaine and Gwen!).
ReplyDeleteI really hate cliff hangers, and I am dreading the thought of having to wait for a good 9 months before the story is continued! I am also a bit worried that one of the writers said that the show will go in a direction nobody is expecting......
