How I Met Your Mother - Why HIMYM caused Robin's heartache

6 Dec 2011

That's some pretty heavy territory for the often-outrageous sitcom. Why did the show put Robin through such a wide range of emotions? It's all part of a master plan, says executive producer Carter Bays, explaining the decision was made this past summer to make Robin infertile.

"This was an important moment we wanted to hit for the series arc," Carter tells me. "We've always said that Robin doesn't have kids, but thought it would be interesting to see how a door being closed to her would effect her. Even if she always thought she never wanted kids, it's still tough to hear. And frankly, it's something we're nervous about. It's one thing dealing with Marshall's father dying, but in many ways this is a much more sensitive issue. And we hope we do it justice."

Carter believes this turn of events is the beginning of a change for the character. "We're setting off an arc to explore more of Robin's professional life," he says. "We're also looking to get into some of her issues — like the inability to open up and share with people. This will drive the second half of the season and come to effect her relationship with Kevin and other members of the group."

  1. I'm just so freaking pissed they pulled the rug out from underneath us with the fake kids. That was the cruelest fucking thing this show ever did.

And I'm interested to see where this goes. I'm still convinced Barney/Robin are endgame. She's so The Bride. They'll just remain child free with dogs or adopt. I'm taking Ted's comments literally because he's the idiot who couldn't figure out that Barney and Robin had slept together even after Barney freaked out.

And still extremely depressed from last night. Here's hoping the show returns to its comedic roots next year.

  2. They wanted to destroy my heart, that's why.

  3. "We've always said that Robin doesn't have kids"I think that rules out adoption. And they've made it pretty clear that Barney does want kids, so I can't see how they would end up together.

  4. Okay, that is true. LOL, I was choosing to ignore that part. But they never once brought up adoption, which is irritating in itself.

  5. Can I sleep 'til this show is over and then find out the ending cos this is torture! Last nights episode was horrible and mean for people who ship Barney and Robin. The last 4 episodes have been emotional torture! I don't care who the mother is - I just want Barney and Robin to be happy together.

  6. LOL, yes. I remember when they said that November sweeps was going to be explosive, but then they emotionally destroyed us more and more every week.

Good times. Still depressed from last night.

  7. Seriously, if you want the show to return to its comedic roots, then step obsessing over Barney and Robin so much.  If you can go back and watch seasons 1-3 and tell me that the show isn't better without Barney have those things called "feelings."  Sort of kidding, but NPH was definitely at his best as single Barney.

  8. But they DO mention adoption, in the Marshall segment of, "How would everyone react to knowing Robin's infertile?" Whether that's something she would consider IRL...well, probably not, since her career and freedom are everything to her. And I don't see her and Barney ending up together now, though until last night I thought they were endgame. Push comes to shove, he wants kids and she doesn't/can't--and you know she would feel bound to tell him about her infertility. I think that's a deal breaker.

  9. Thanks for the spoiler for those who can only see the episode the next day. You know, international viewers and all that people.

  10. www.SPOILERtv.com

I still don't understand people who come here before they've seen the latest episode and then complain that they were spoiled.

  11. This site is called Spoilertv - what do you expect?

    ReplyDelete
  12. wow, it's like going on a site called recipes and finding....recipes! mind blowing.

    ReplyDelete
  13. also the title doesn't even spoil anything if you haven't seen the episode

  14. The fake kids thing was cruel, but I thought that was a pretty interesting twist. I cried when Robin got the news and was totally sobbing at the end of the episode. I really hope that Robin and Barney still end up together, even though now there's no child in the picture

  15. If Barney loves Robin, he'll love her enough that he won't mind that she can't have kids. I honestly don't believe her infertility is going to be a deal breaker when she's his soul mate.

  16. It's character development. I would get so sick of Barney being an annoying womanizer for years on end. It's annoying. I like that he's growing.

And I've loved Barney and Robin since season one, so definitely not happening.

  17. I just said Robin's heartache. That doesn't give away all that much, and this is a spoiler site.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Really? Why do people want a manchild womanizer back? It's character development, which is a good thing. He's growing as a person, which is nice. He can't remain that womanizer forever or it'd be annoying.

  19. I don't see how this dismisses her ending
up wit Barney. Seems to me that it's going to happen that way anyway.
And I don't think Barney is dead set on having kids. The reason he
started having those feelings was because Robin rejected him. When he
found she was pregnant I think he was happier that it was something that
brought him closer to Robin than it was because he wanted a child. Just
    my two cents. :)

  20. I like this movement for Robin. I felt so devastated for her. The way she explained it with the pole-vaulting to Lily,
    ugh...rip my heart out.

  21. Also, oops! I replied to your post an accident! :P

  22. Yes, it's a spoiler site, I know that, thanks for the obvious. But the site has a rss feed for ALL of the shows, so it's not up to me to not read that if I haven't see the episode yet.
I use to save this kind of news until I have seen the episode, and that's not a problem if you don't put spoilers in the title. Sorry, I don't care what you think, it's a spoiler for me, and that's all that I care. So thanks for being so understanding.
And you know what? I don't see spoilers for the other shows. You use to say "spoilers for last night episode" or "major spoilers", things like that. So, if this is a spoiler site, the next time why don't you just put them right in the title?
It was so easy to say: "sorry, my mistake". You guys don't know what humility means.

  23. Just subscribe to the RSS feeds of the shows you want

  24. I didn't even say what happened, though. It doesn't give away much other than something bad happened to Robin. That's all. Sorry you were spoiled, though.

  25. I am pretty sure that he meant something different. I understood his words like he said that most of people doesn't see the bigger story than we see in current episode. It's like this: people watch this episode and people don't realize that producers has bigger idea and plot to serve.

I dont know, though. I'm pretty stoned.

  26. I'm sad for Robin, and a little disappointed, but I'm interested to see where it takes her character

    ReplyDelete
  27. is the misuse of "effect" a shoutout to marshall?

    ReplyDelete
  28. LOL. That's bothering me so much, and it did remind me of him.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Agreed. These two need to be together!

    ReplyDelete
  30. Absolutely agree, it was actually a lot of fun seeing Barney wanting to be a dad in this episode....and then they went on and did that!! :(

    ReplyDelete
  31. hahahah! seriously.....i have so many shows to catch up with ... what do i do? stay away from those sections of spoilertv....and if i've read something...then too bad, that's my problem!

    ReplyDelete
  32. I want to know what Ted meant by saying she was 'never alone'

    ReplyDelete
  33. hear hear! very sad! even if someone has made a decision to not do something...its always nice to have your options open....

    ReplyDelete
  34. The avoided saying "she was never....a mother". I was almost certain that's what Ted was going to say. Anyone else think that?

    ReplyDelete
  35. I assumed he meant her friends were always at her side--and especially that because HE was there, she always had someone who loved her.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I don't agree. They spent the entire episode using "pole vaulter" as some sort of euphemism for "mother," and he says at the end that Robin never became a pole vaulter.

    ReplyDelete
  37. It might be wise for you to not read this site if you don't want the episodes revealed. That IS the name of the site, you know: SpoilerTV.

  38. So sad for Robin... such a heartbreaking episode!

  39. HIMYM creators are going way too soap opera-y.  It's a damn sitcom, people.

    ReplyDelete
  40. well i think the brdie in the finale is Becki Newton's character i think robin will end up with barney in the end though i do agree that there endgame i felt this episode foreshadowed that but i was a bit dissapointed they pulled the fake kids card i do agree with you on that

    ReplyDelete
  41. That doesn't mean they can't have dramatic plotlines. As much as it's depressing me, I like it.

    ReplyDelete
  42. No way is Barney going to marry Becki Newton. He's supposed to actually being married, and that's definitely to Robin.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Amen to this, I need more comedy. hopefully after the break we will get it.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Dramatic plotlines are perfectly acceptable.  The lack of balance between drama and comedy that HIMYM has displayed lately is not.  It's too much.
