Grey's Anatomy - Season 8 - Sarah Drew interview about the AU episode

Dec 8, 2011

But in a world where the genius Ellis Grey is still alive, is Izzie Stevens (Katherine Heigl) still kicking around Seattle Grace? “No,” says Sarah Drew (April Kepner) who just finished shooting the episode. “She’s referred to, but, no, she’s not in it.”

In an exclusive interview with Wetpaint Entertainment, Sarah tells us that her own character, April Kepner, is very much part of this world. “She does something very surprising, which will be fun for the viewers,” she teases.

And life as we have come to know it is upside down.

“It’s the time that we’re in now, but as if everything was different,” she says. “Some people are alive that have died, some people are not there that would have been there. All the relationships are completely different – totally and completely different.”

Apparently it’s an alternate fashion universe as well.

“Everybody’s hair is different, everybody’s look is different. The whole hospital looks different, the scrubs are all different, everything has changed,” Sarah tells us.

But the actress, who in real life is due to give birth in seven weeks, won’t be popping out a baby on Grey’s Anatomy anytime soon – in fact, Sarah tells us there are still no plans for Dr. April Kepner to lose her virginity.

“I keep asking,” she says. “But she’s not getting any action yet!”

  1. I'm getting more and more excited for this episode!

Also, now I'm wondering if April's going to be pregnant in the AU because of Sarah's actual pregnancy.

  2. Love Sarah Drew. I think she's great on the show. I'm glad she's one of the ones that decided to keep around.

  3. I would love to know why they're doing an episode like this.  If there's not a good reason, it's basically a waste of time.

  4. A lot of shows have AU episodes. It's fun!

  5. Not for me.  Except for Fringe, it's usually an annoying diversion from the ongoing storyline.

Shows like Smallville and Supernatural have done this on occasion and I almost always wish they hadn't.  They're never plot-driven, useful episodes that propel the main story forward.  They're one-off, throwaway diversions from what's really going on in the program.

  6. So? Why does every episodes have to be plot driven or useful?

  7. They don't but if it's a self-contained episode that has nothing to do with the story you've tuned in to see or the characters the show has carefully constructed over multiple seasons, it should be an exceptional story worthy of the audience's time and it almost never is.  It might as well be an April Fools joke most of the time.

  8. thanks!  I'm really looking forward to this episode  :)

  9. Grey's goes Fringe. I can't wait for this. In fact I wouldn't mind staying AU for a while. It's the Fringe effect. ;)

  10. I agree they're often pointless (but always kinda fun) + one of the best supernatural episodes were an AU (What is and wath should never be and The end ;) )

  11. I think Grey's has proved that it can do episodes like these which are still good, and make you think.
The episode with Meredith in the hospital purgatory after drowning was a great example, she couldn't remember it when she came out of it, but I think we learned a lot about her.

  12. I'll take your Meredith limbo and raise you Izzie's Denny hallucinations.

  13. " one of the best supernatural episodes were an AU (What is and wath should never be and The end ;)"

    I respectfully (and strongly) disagree.

  14. You really can't top that aha

  15. but wait there was a point to Izzys hallucinations, she had the tumor. Had she not been seeing Denny she wouldnt have fig it out. Granted GRANTED i think they could have done something completely different to tell that story, it was affective.

  16. Yes, because Fringe was the first television show EVER to do an AU episode...

  17. Okay so Grey's going Fringe,wheres George??

  18. I'm not sure. That musical episode was terrible. Don't know why so many shows decide they have to do a musical ep. It's become a thing. But I'll give you the Denny's ghost. Doesn't get much worse than that!

  19. They wouldn't have to hide it, and it'd be fun to see April like that.

    ReplyDelete
  20. For sure. It seems like an obvious direction for the ep to take.

  21. Not really and I know that very well. It's just the first show, for me at least, that is spending quality time in AU and it makes me wish more shows would do that. I always loved AU episodes and that story line was one of my favorite things in S10 SMALLVILLE. Specially that they gave us two episodes not just the usual one...

  22. I can not wait to see how this episode pans out.  Its going to be interesting to see what relationships stayed the same if any.

  23. given that they make no mention of him but do mention Izzy and say other characters will be alive who died it's not too far fetched to think he will be there

  24. I sure hope so i loved George's character and he played it perfectly. At least the first 3 years.

  25. I don't what to expect from this episode!! But I wanna see it soonner, ca't wait for GA to be back!!

  26. This AU episode looks really interesting!!

    ReplyDelete
  27. This could be really interesting - if nothing else just to see how everything is different - what do they change/what stays the same.

  28. Cause it pleases a lot of people and the show is already popular enough so that they dont care if a LOT more hates it. :P which is why this usualy happens after season 5

  29. It's a terrible life and What is and...... Be are like in my top 5. LOVE IT! And its deferent, breath of fresh air.
But hey so what they please some, and the other can just skip it

  30. but can we really consider Fringe like a show that does AU? I mean the AU IS the show... like its the plotline to have many words right? or kinda. (btw i missed some episodes so maybe I missed what you are talking about)

but anyway. for me its not the same.
    But I love it.

  31. I understand what you mean. It's such an important part of the show it's really not just an episode they are season or almost season long plotlines. Like season 4 is now like new AU inside the AUs since Peter died here in both universes  and now their histories and even characters are different. Hence the Amberverse instead of the Blue and Red ones.

I actually am waiting for to show go AU on us for only one episode but I don't think that will happen. If they do it they do it thoroughly and that's what I love about it.

  32. aw gosh and now I wanna buy the dvds to catch up on everything ... I CANT! exams. Why is this show so good but my brain to stupid to remember anything that goes on in it

    ReplyDelete
  33. I hope I didn't I spoil anything for you though your entusiasm makes me not sorry it at all... ;) Rewatch is the key to Fringe. Seriously. It gets better every freaking time.

  34. dont worry I knew about what you said. I'm only late on this season and like 2-3 random episode in s2.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I agree with you.  Marvel Comics started a series called "What if?" and wrote one-shot stories dealing with big events in some main characters storylines. I can see it working for one character but not more. +

  36. Will it be pre or post bus George?

    ReplyDelete
  37. Okay,so i fed the cats, made myself a cup of coffee,go thru my mail in which i didn't finish, far to depressing,go to spoilers,Yay! i have 3 messages and guess which one i pick first? Yup,yours and the first thing i get to think about is post George..aka the meat puzzle, oops i mean 007...Ha!  I course i would go with pre Tour De Bus

Have you been lurking,or just busy? How are you feeling?

  38. More surgeons, trying to get an appointment in Chicago as my area doesn't have the facilities to handle what needs to be done.  Lovely.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Yeah i have the same problem,i live almost 100 miles outside of Manhattan that when i have to see my cardiologist,or orthopedic surgeon it literally costs me a full day of traveling, that by the time i get home i'm in bad shape. I cannot find a good M.D. and the hospitals are very small. I sure this journey will come to a close for you, maybe not today, but it will come,in the meantime don't get crazy your back will feel worse....

    ReplyDelete
  40. I was ALREADY crazy!  Have you looked at the Cleveland Clinic?  Supposed to have some of the best spine people there.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Nope can't say that i have,we have the hospital for special surgery, also 3 others that are excellent right in N.Y.C.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I can't wait for the show to come back in January....especially with this episode!

    ReplyDelete
  43.  I think this may have to do with the fact that Teddy doesn't know Henry is dead...idk just a thought
