a February 2012 sweeps episode, the docs at Seattle Grace will be making their rounds in an alternate reality, as the ABC drama ponders the provocative question, “What if things had been different — very different.”

Specifically, Meredith imagines what life would’ve been like had her late mother Ellis never had Alzheimer’s, a traumatic situation that shaped Mer into the dark-and-twisty wife and MD she is today.

A Grey’s rep declined to comment, but TVLine has confirmed that Kate Walsh will play a big role in the mind-trippy episode. Why? Because in this alt-reality, Derek and Addison — wait for it — never broke up!

And while Walsh is the only former series regular returning, an insider confirms that other Grey’s alums will be back — including a certain victim of the Seattle Grace Massacre of 2010, who shall not be named.

And to be sure, Derek, Mer and Addison aren’t the only characters who get pulled into this new dimension. “Everyone is affected,” says the insider.

    Okay, I hate Derek/Addison together, but I'm so freaking excited for this episode! I love AU episodes.

    I am so excited for this it's ridiculous. 
    Firstly, Kate Walsh, that's enough of a reason.
    Secondly, Seattle Grace Shootings people were my favourite
    Thirdly, OLD CHARACTERS :D we may be getting some Ellis Grey, and am I the only one dying for an Izzier or George appearance? I think not.

    I'm actually looking forward to it, but maybe that's just because I can't stand Meredith.. she's getting better lately, but she's always come across as whiny and annoying to me haha

    Ugh!!! I hate Derek and Addison together!!! Please say they are as unhappy as ever when they're together!!!! I hope that even in AU land Meredith and Derek wind up together hahaha!!! This is so exciting though, Shonda's own little attempt at fanfiction hahaha!!!!

    Grey's has been quite solid the past 2 seasons, The 6th season finale really brought me back into the show. This will be a cool little side trip of an ep, I think.

    Seems I'm in the minority but after all the half-baked MerDer plotlines, Derek/Addison married alernate reality is the last thing I want to see.

    I don't get it, what would Reed or Charles be doing if they weren't dead, it's not like they'd make any difference. I'm hoping for the victim to be Mer's miscarried unborn child that would actually be interesting.

    maybe Mer/Der have had an affair, she is pregnant with his child because of this, but when it come's back to reality she is telling Derek she is pregnant again :-)
