Kate Burton, who played Meredith’s mom Ellis in earlier seasons, will reprise her role for a special dreamscape episode that imagines all the ways her daughter’s life would have been different had she not died from the effects of Alzheimer’s. And if acclaimed surgeon mother still in the game, what does that mean for her relationship with Chief Webber? Hmm…

Burton will join Private Practice’s Kate Walsh, who revealed via Twitter last week that she will return to Grey’s as well. In the dream, Meredith wonders what would have happened had the red-headed beauty stayed with Derek.

The episode will air in February and is titled “If/Then.”

    I wonder if the AU world is going to be like, Addison never cheated on Derek or if Addie and Mark did it and Derek came to Seattle and was with Meredith and then left her for Addison and they just never broke up again!!!! Hmm!!!! On another note, I know Kate Burton coming back was sort of a given considering the AU storyline but.... I'm so excited anyway!!!! :D !!!!

    Sounds interesting but I've never been a fan of the more Meredith-heavy eps. I just never liked her character all that much. Though she has gotten better over the past couple seasons.

    Looks really interesting.. And all the scenes with Kate & Kate is always interesting in the previous seasons! I sort of wished that Addison didn't leave for California and that Ellis hasn't died..

    I've missed Kate Burton for so long, her scenes with pompeo were always so powerful!Glad we will see more Ellis even if it is in AU. Yay for Shonda Rhimes
    Just hope my expectations aren't too high for this episode cause I am really anxious to see it...

    I'm looking forward to this ep - curious at how it'll all play out. Glad we'll be seeing Ellis again - Kate Burton was great and Ellis/Meredith scenes were always good.

    Mer becomes extra ordinary in her mother's eyes when she has a breakthru on ellis's diabetes trial. Yes that's right my prediction is they are working together on this trial which ties in today's SL.
