USA Today has named George R.R. Martin it’s ‘Author of the Year’ for 2011. The article gives much of the credit for his sucess to the hit HBO show Game of Thrones saying: “Thanks to HBO’s hit adaptation, Martin ascended from best-selling cult writer (especially popular with young men) to king of the book world.”
Whether you started reading the novels because of the HBO series or you started watching the series because of the novels HBO and Mr. Martin must be blown away by the number of people wanting to explore Westeros these days.
This honor comes on the heels of Entertainment Weekly’s dubbing the author ‘Entertainer of the Year.’
With Game of Thrones set to return to HBO for a second season in April, we say… long may he reign.

After getting 2 big awards this week I am beginning to think this is the start of a long list of Awards for GRRM this year! Not to mention Game of Thrones and Awards season around the corner!
ReplyDeleteAwards are coming....
Great!! :D
ReplyDeleteYay! Have yet to start with A Dance With Dragons (waiting for it to arrive from Amazon), but I'm pretty sure it's a title well deserved! :D
ReplyDeleteI'm still in the process of reading Game of Thrones. I find that reading the book after watching the first season is very satisfying as the book gives more background information. I think I'll do the same for the second book - wait until Season 2 has finished airing.
ReplyDeleteLove his face! :D
ReplyDeleteSounds like a good plan!
ReplyDeleteAlthough some of book 2 will be pushed back to Season 3. For the most part though your plan should work this year. After that all bets are off!
Book 3 is so large it will be split into 2 seasons (Season 3 and 4) and some of it will even slip in to Season 2 possibly.
Then Book 4 and Book 5 each happen at about the same time and each has only half of the cast and regions of the realms. So combined together those two books will make for Season 5 and 6.
So after Season 2 and reading Book 2 you could watch Season 3 and 4, but would have to wait 2 years to read Book 3 and avoid spoilery. Then read book 3, watch Season 5 and 6 before reading Books 4 and 5.
GRRM did not make it easy! XD
That's too complicated! lol
ReplyDeleteI think I'll just keep the plan until I read Book 2 and then just started reading the rest of the books. I should be finished with Book 1 before April. Not a slow reader, on the contrary a very fast reader, but I've been juggling three book (well two now) - 11/22/63 (my vote for Book of the Year), Eragon (re-reading the series before I start the final book), and Game of Thrones. Then I'll start Book 2 in June when Season 2 ends. :)
Ha!
ReplyDeleteI had to re-write that 2 or 3 times since I was confusing myself as I wrote it! XD
The great thing about GRRM is that there is so much detail that unless you have read the book(s) right before watching the season there is a good chance a number of details will be forgotten until you watch scenes unfold on TV. Plus the series adds so much to the books in the way of new scenes, or bringing subtle book elements to the forefront of the TV series.
I keep meaning to read the Eragon series and forgetting to get to it. It's on my list along with The Name of the Wind and its series.... after I finish The First Law series by Abercrombie. I just started The Blade Itself before Christmas and I'm enjoying it so far.
Damn you for giving me more recommendations. I've never heard of those 2 series, but they both have excellent reviews on Amazon.
ReplyDeleteSorry....Ha! XD
ReplyDeleteAbercrombie is somewhat similar to GRRM in that it's more dark and adult than a lot of fantasy series, but it has a more traditional format than GRRM's POV style.
Cadence recommended Name of the Wind series to me and I had never heard of it either. I have since seen it on many reader's "best fantasy series" lists.....
Ever read They Fey series by Kristine Kathryn Rusch? Another series I have read and has a more adult tone to it. Bonus points since it is a complete series already completed so there is no waiting for the next book to release! Technically I guess it is 2 completely series, the first 4 books and then 2 more as a sequel series.
Nope, haven't heard of The Fey series either, but it's always good to have a complete series before you start reading. I guess I'm not as familiar with fantasy fiction as I thought! :p
ReplyDeleteThere is just so much of it out there these days. It's hard to know it all. I don't pretend to be an expert or even well-versed in it... just a fan of the genre I guess.
ReplyDeleteHopefully this will motivate him to crank out book 6 in shorter order than ADWD :)
ReplyDeleteGRRM is a terrific writer, his characters are so vivid, fascinating, intriguing and whatnot. The character splitting in books 4 and 5 annoys me a little, though. It's the main reason I'm taking a break from the books now that I've finished book 3 (and gotta say, A Storm of Swords is definitely my fav so far). Maybe I should just take both book 4 and 5 and read them simultaneously? ;P
ReplyDeleteDear GRRM everyone officially loves you now please let us have the 6th book sooner rather than 5 years later. Love the Internet.
ReplyDeletegood for him!!!
ReplyDeletethat's awsome
