Oscar winning actress Dame Helen Mirren has revealed that she would love to appear as the 12th Doctor in BBC1's sci-fi series Doctor Who.

Mirren, 65, voiced her desire to play the first female Timelord in an interview with the Daily Star, in which she's quoted as saying: : "I would like to play the new female Doctor Who. I don't want to just be his sidekick."
Since the time-travelling Doctor was created in 1963 the Doctor has so far always regenerated into male form, however it's never been inconceivable that the Doctor could regenerate as a female.
The current Doctor, Matt Smith, has previously voiced his interest in Helen Mirren appearing in the series, however he may not have thought of her as a replacement for himself: “Helen Mirren would be great in Doctor Who,” he said. Adding “also Eric Cantona and Vincent Cassel – he would be number one actually.”

That would be interesting! VERY interesting!
ReplyDeleteI think to make the change from the iconic male Doctor who to a woman in the role would require an icon in the role and certainly Helen Mirren is an icon....
I would love Helen to play the Doctor but I can't imagine she would be committed to doing more than one series and that would be a shame
ReplyDeleteOh my word. O_O
ReplyDeleteHelen Mirren is the BEST, and for her to be the first female doctor...that's a pretty big deal. I'm not even a big fan of Doctor Who and this still excites me.
Well it wouldn't be the first time Moff cast a female in the part XD

The source link seems to be broken :(
ReplyDeleteThis would be awesome
ReplyDeleteFor me the best Dr Who and Companion were David Tennant and Billie Piper.
ReplyDeleteThey had great chemistry and were so good together.
I'm not fussy on Matt Smith at all, and perhaps because I am a woman myself, I would not be happy with a female Dr Who.
I am a firm believer that anyone serious about the role should commit to at least 3 years. I have been a Mirren fan since The Long Good Friday and have loved her in just about everything since then. But, unless she is willing to make a serious commitment to the role, I don't think she should do it.
ReplyDeleteI liked Eccleston, but he admittedly only played The Doctor for 1 year just to launch his career. Then he tried to claim that doing 13 45-minute episodes was like doing 52 25-minute episodes so he had done as much as other Doctors... yeah right.
Assuming she was willing to sign on for several years, my concern would be whether she could be quirky enough for the role. When Peter Davison took the role in the early 80s he was very popular at the time (due to All Creatures Great & Small), but he was very bland and didn't make for an interesting Doctor. His acting wasn't bad, just kinda boring, especially following Tom Baker.
She is an exquisite actress, but all her roles have been serious down-to-earth characters. There is usually a peak at a great sense of humor right under the surface, but that is nothing like playing a 1000 year old flamboyant, over the top, larger than life alien. I would love to see her pull it off though.
On a side note, she would be the first female Doctor, not the first female Time Lord (or Time Lady). I believe Mary Tamm as Romana (1978) was the first female Time Lord.
That would be hilarious!!! :)
ReplyDeleteYeah I agree with you, she would need to do 3 seasons 2 at the least otherwise its a waste of another regeneration and damn I loved Eccleston but one season was not enough.
ReplyDeleteI prefer the Helen suggestion over some of the other actresses who always get linked to playing a female Doctor like Joanna Lumley (who I do love but don't think could pull of the role)
I love Helen Mirren, I really do, but I hope this doesn't happen. I don't want a female Doctor. Then who would I crush on?
ReplyDeleteYes. I agree. She would be one of the few who could pull it off.
ReplyDelete*Facepalm*
ReplyDeleteFixed.
Presumably the cute male sidekicks she would get.
ReplyDeleteI liked Tennant the most too... BY FAR. Companion wise I liked them all for different reasons I guess.
ReplyDeleteMatt Smith made me lose interest honestly. I still plan to catch up, but I keep stopping every few episodes since I just do not care for him much.
Maybe she would get a male companion you could crush on? XD
ReplyDeleteHa!
ReplyDeleteJoanna Lumley as the doctor -

I so forgot she did that ha
ReplyDeleteIf anyone could do it, it's the Dame herself!
ReplyDeleteFor a 65 year old woman Helen Mirren has got it goin on! I suspect Christina Aguillera is her from the past brought forward in a time machine.
ReplyDeletethis woman stay workin, get that paper girl!!!
ReplyDeleteThat's an awesome idea. Helen Mirren is amazing and she could bring a lot to the Doctor Who franchise. Who better to play the first female Doctor?
ReplyDeleteI love adore this! I can only hope it happens
ReplyDeleteDon't shoot the messenger but whenever I considered a female doctor, I thought Keira Knightley would fit the bill quite nicely. Although, if it was a one-season situation, I could definitely see Helen Mirren as The Doctor.
ReplyDeleteShe would be awesome!
ReplyDeleteHelen Mirren is like the energizer bunny, she keeps going and going! :)
ReplyDeleteDamn - I hope I'm that smokin' at 65!
ReplyDeleteYa interesting is the best way to put it. First female Doctor and going back to a older Doctor. I agree with what people said before me, I don't think she would do it for more then 1 series if she really did do it and I don't want another short term Doctor. The woman that played the TARDIS would have made a great Doctor I think. Though it may be sacrilege to say I'm still holding out hope that Chris Hardwick would be #12, I know its not likely as it would piss off too many hardcore fans to have a Doctor not from the UK
ReplyDeleteWow, I'm a little taken aback here, We agree 100%. I'm so happy. :-) Only teasing!
ReplyDeleteTennant was great. He was born to play that role and they should have tried harded to keep him.
I never warmed to Matt Smith at all, he just doesn't have the charisma of Tennant.
In fact I, too, haven't kept up since Tennant left.
As far as a woman Dr Who is concerned, while it's possible for him to be a female, I think it would have to be very well thought out, and the right person found otherwise it could turn out a flop.
While Helen Mirran is a great actress, I just don't see her in such a quirky role.
I don't think Eccleston needed Who to launch his career, I think they however needed someone as famous as him in 2004 to relaunch the show thou, lol. I find Davison a great Doctor, not bland at all, he is certainly the bitchiest one there has ever been XD
ReplyDeleteI don't know much harder Moffat could have tried, but I'm glad that he failed. 10 had become too unlike an alien by the end of RTD's reign, and was becoming ever more unpopular with the fans due to the plots.
ReplyDeleteWith hindsight it was the best move for all involved imo as we have had an excellent long arc with 11/Amy/Rory/River that just wouldn't have been possible if Tennant had stayed on in the role. Plus we have a Doctor who is quirky and alien in design and portrayal, all is how it should be :)
I hope Moff will go for a male companion, but I fear that it will yet again be present day teen/early 20 something. The lass who died at Demons Run would be an interesting choice. She knew him, but he didn't know her, so it would be interesting to see that from another prospective now.
ReplyDeleteThe doctor has been hob-nobbing with "earthlings" for a while now so it's only natural that some of our emotions and sensibilities woud rub off on him. ( a bit like Spock)
ReplyDeleteThen how much do we really know about the true nature and characteristics of a Time Lord anyway?
It just depends on one's individual preferences. I liked Tennant better and although Smith does his duty to the role, he just doesn't connect with me.:-)
Oh for sure, that's always been the way of the show thou, and the beauty of it is that there will always be another Doc along soon to change the direction yet again :D
ReplyDeleteHa! :)
ReplyDeleteI think Mirren would be a different Doctor... maybe not as quirky. Although I do think she can pretty much pull off anything including quirky.
It would be interesting to see her in the role, not sure I would like it....
So I'm going to be one of the few on here and just put this out there. HELL. NO. I dont mean to discriminate in terms of age, but she is too old. I feel that she wouldnt committ to any more than two series, at best and that's not something which the show needs. We've had three doctor's since 2005, and if we are to assume the show will continue relatively uninterupted (the "one off" shows were pretty good with Tennant, more of those please?), then I dont feel that burning up a regeneration like that will be too good for the show.
ReplyDeleteI think the signs are that we will be heading towards a female doctor next time round. Amongst the first few sentences Smith uttered were "Oh no, I'm a girl", as well as the reference to the Time Lord who swtiched genders during this series (I've forgotten their name, too tired...!). I'd welcome this, but I feel the need to be in the 30-45 age range, someone who is experienced, but not overly well known, like the current and previous to Doctors for example.
Anyhow, that's just me
NO NO NO! The DOCTOR is a MALE he has been from the beginning! and how would river and his marriage work? PLEASE PLEASE! DONT KILL ME!
