Thanks to Linda for the heads up.
The CW is closing its on site fan forums as of tomorrow Wednesday the 14th. They are moving over to Facebook and Twitter. The CW did not put up forums for any of its new shows this year, but now there will be no on site forums for Supernatural, The Vampire Diaries, Gossip Girl, 90210, America' Next Top Model or Nikita.
This change was only announced this morning giving fans who used these forums little to no opportunity to find other venues other than Facebook.
It's a terrible way to treat their loyal readers and giving them no warning is pretty disgusting IMHO. Years of Community and Friendship destroyed overnight.
Anyone from the CW Messages are more than welcome to join our Forums if they need a new home.
its please :P
ReplyDeleteLOL at the subject line.
ReplyDeleteIt is pretty horrible of them to do.
:))))))))))))
ReplyDeletesorry, OCD :P
ReplyDeleteLOL, I'm a former English major and things like that drive me up the wall too. Don't worry about it!
ReplyDeleteThat's pretty rude.
ReplyDeleteI don't even watch any CW shows but that is a dick move.
ReplyDeleteand English isn't even my native language, you should see me in action when it comes to German :P
ReplyDeleteThat is pretty horrible, are they trying to get the Most Douchebag Network award this year or something?
ReplyDeletePoor decision surely the message boards are one of the best things the CW has? and to do at such short notice talk about cutting of your nose to spite your face.
ReplyDeleteGet ready for more readers over here then. What is bad for them is good for you STV!
ReplyDeleteAs a long time regular poster at CWs Supernatural board I am disgusted and incredibly disappointed at this terrible decision. The CW depends almost entirely on the active part of SPNs fanbase for the promotion of the show. Lord knows they do little enough themselves. And this is how they thank us! Disgusting behaviour.
ReplyDeleteThey are breaking up a community of friends and fans that have been there since the earliest days of the show. Twitter and Facebook are no substitutes. I am so angry!
If you are talking about the first its, perhaps the mods corrected it. The second it's is correct because that one is the contraction for it is. I was taught that if it is the contraction you use the apostrophe.
ReplyDeleteI know it's awful, feel free to tell your friends they are more than welcome to use our forums
ReplyDeleteIf so they are in poll position!
ReplyDeleteClosing those boards may cost the CW the fan support that makes three of their shows--"Gossip Girl," "Vampire Diaries," and "Supernatural"---popular enough to be worth the electricity it takes to keep them on the air.
ReplyDeleteThat is completely disgusting. I guess that the new head is going to do a complete overhaul...
ReplyDeleteThey obviously don't care about their fans.
ReplyDeleteWhy give away all those years of community and just place them on Facebook?
A lot of work/offices block Facebook.
I feel so sorry for all the people who have accounts there
(No Longer) TV to Talk About
ReplyDeleteVery true
ReplyDeleteThe irony
ReplyDeleteI swear I hear you snickering and rubbing your hands together like Monty Burns as you wrote that... or after since it is hard to type WHILE rubbing one's hands together! XD
ReplyDeleteHa lol :)
ReplyDeleteI don't get the drama personally. With so many better forums (like the ones here at SpoilerTV... ahem) fans can stay connected just as easily. Facebook and Twitter are already in use by many of those fans... so just migrate over... or to SpoilerTV of course! XD
ReplyDeleteIf it saves the network money by all means I'm for it! That money could go to better promotions for their existing or new series.
I think the big problem with this is the 3-4 years worth of posts, contents etc. All this will be deleted and they only had 1 days notice. So many people won't even know about it
ReplyDeleteIt was corrected. Perhaps an easy way for some to remember which is which:
ReplyDeletewhat's
that's
it's
his
hers
its
this really sucks
ReplyDeleteI can see that as being a low blow.... They should have them open and stored in archive form for a while to allow access. Not to mention given a longer warning time for the close date.
ReplyDeleteThat said... It's the way of the internet Sites close for various reasons all the time only to migrate to new sites or evolve into often times better sites in new locations.
Obviously CW did not do it to alienate their fans....and probably needed to do it to save money and attempt to keep afloat financially.
I don't use the CW boards, but that is a bunch of BS. 1 day notice? Really, CW? Does that seem nice/fair??
ReplyDeleteAt the very least they should have given some warning. As it is, the community is shattered as some fans go to facebook, others to twitter, others to a variety of forums, and others to write it off altogether. Very poorly handled with no consideration for their fans. With just 1 week of warning, fans could have discussed a few alternative sites where they could continue their discussions. It takes years to build a strong community and seconds to destroy it.
ReplyDeleteThe CW is going to save $27.14 from closing these forums. Forums really don't cost that much to maintain.
ReplyDeleteYeah I agree with that or they should have at least kept an archive form open for a month or three....
ReplyDeleteI just think this was a last resort for CW and not something they wanted to do..... As usual they just went about it the wrong way.
I will give the CW one thing... they are consistent in their going about things the wrong way.
It's The CW. By now we should just expect punishment.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure its more than that when you add in support techs and server rentals and whatnot, but it may not save them much at all and may not be worth the price they pay in the long run either...
ReplyDeleteI'm sure their is some logic behind closing them (not this abruptly) wen if that logic is flawed. I would be interested in knowing their reasons for doing it...
Ah we don't think it was done to alienate us, no. But it does speak volumes on how they view their fanbase. What ticks us off is that they seem oblivious to the fandom. Not only do we get 1 day notice, but while trying to arrange migrations all day and share twitter/email info, users have had their links deleted within minutes due to "no off site link" rules. That is when it starts to go from thoughtless to simply annoying.
ReplyDeleteNot even the mods knew it was happening, they knew when we knew apparently.
As for the budgetary reasons, a network such as CW don't do a lot of publicity in the first place. The fandom in itself did a good job of viral campiagning, so in that sense I think maintaining the forums were about as cost/benefit effecient as you can get.
This pleases me, as for no other reason that although I've never been to their forums, I didn't hear anything good about the users there. Lots of haters stewing in their own filth, at least on the SPN forum. Though I'm sure they'll find a new "home" soon enough, knowing they won't be happy without their daily bashing or hating.
ReplyDeleteThat no offsite link rule would have annoyed me so much I would not have posted or frequented te forum anyway! XD
ReplyDeleteOnce the fans settle in to a better fan forum they will evenetually find each other.... Sad and annoying it will take much longer than needed due to the CW's time schedule and no linking policy.
My guess is that the fans that promoted their favorite shows on cW still will via other sites. I honestly doubt the CW wil lose much in that regard.
The biggest scar will be with the fans that despite the CW's continued faux pas continue to go to the actual CW forums to connect. I would think many, if they are so close a community, managed to collect emails and various social accounts from their fellow forum fans over the years.... but not all of their forum friends I'm sure.
But when people migrate to facebook, its all way too personal. Some people like maintaining anonymity(sorry if I spelt that wrong) on the internet, which is easy to do on message boards but very difficult on facebook.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure it is more than $27, but still only .0000000001% of the CW's budget. Closing the forums is not going to give them a significant savings. Server rentals and bandwidth are pretty cheap these days. I've never used the CW forums, so have no idea how many people they employed on them, but it shouldn't have been very many (that would be the main cost).
ReplyDeleteI get that! I rarely use Facebook and mostly have one et up to promote this site honestly.....
ReplyDeleteThere are just so many forums for shows these days I would think there are actually better user friendly boards that are just as anonymous....
The very few times I went in to the CW forums (after finding the link in a search hit or something) It seemed like a lot of flaming and and haters. That was why I never went there directly after my first visit or two....
ReplyDeleteMy thought was that the human element would be the main expense too. I have no idea how much it costs to run a forum or keep one going.....
ReplyDeleteI can't think of any other reason than money to do it though.... Unless possibly they were tired of the flame wars and haters?
I don't think the forums would be huge revenue earners, but I doubt they were huge money black holes either....
I do not use the CW message boards. The few times I attempted to, I found the people who were involved there to be incredibly rude. I prefer here, Twitter, and Facebook. I am sorry they are losing their forums, but there had to be a reason for it. I do think they should have been given more time, though.
ReplyDeleteI've never used the message boards, but closing it on such short notice was a really rude thing to do.
ReplyDeleteI can't believe it's money. I pretty sure our server is more powerful than theirs looking at the numbers of members, and ours costs $300 a month
ReplyDeleteImagine if spoilertv announced they were shutting down tomorrow and deleting the site. How many email and social accounts do you have for the people here? I have none, and I expect the same goes for the vast majority of users here.
ReplyDeletePeople would scatter and end up on 100s of different sites. A few clumps of people would migrate to other popular sites, but most would never see each other again. It would certainly not be an orderly migration to a single new meeting place. Even given a month, it is very difficult to pull off a smooth migration.
Oh that reminds me, we're closing in 2 mins :)
ReplyDeleteCertainly possible that they think the flames/haters are too much negative press. As with nearly all network decisions, we will likely never know.
ReplyDeleteI have about 5 to 8 in my address book just from email contact alone.. maybe another half dozen sites people run bookmarked and quite a few twitter accounts I have checked out and bookamrked.if I'm not following them on one account or another.
ReplyDeleteThen add in those that are on Google+ and Facebook (both I rarely if ever check out).
I would miss quite a few peoples TV series knowledge or snarky comments, but I have little doubt I would run into some of them on other forums eventually.
yeah I don't get it honestly, but their has to be a reason.... Maybe some bullying lawsuit or legal case related to forum posts.. who knows.
ReplyDeleteI just cannot understand why they would cose their forums without reason... I'm thinking they have one or more. Even if we may never find out what they are.XD
That is the perfect opening for me to plug my own page ;P
ReplyDeleteI maintain a list of genre start/return dates, and possible future shows. Most of the info is available here at spoilertv on various pages, but my list is specific to genre shows.
http://netflixcommunity.ning.com/group/wormholextreme/forum/topics/tv-show-start-dates
Great list Baff, nice one.
ReplyDeleteBrilliant :P
ReplyDeleteI would be cheesed off. I'm one of those people who enjoys to keep a little bit of history about things, so to lose years worth of posts, conversations etc etc, I'd be well peeved off!
ReplyDeleteOh I doubt it has much to do with posters. I've never really posted on any other board so I can't comment if there were more or less on the CW boards. But CW hadn't updated their forums to new shows or removed old ones for over a year. So I'm pretty sure they weren't following them. Besides it's a heck of a lot easier to ban a few troublemakers than closing down your entire site.
ReplyDeleteThe better discussions there could be pretty awesome, and it was a real community. I'll miss it.
ReplyDeleteIt makes me wonder if this is the first of the last of the CW.
Nice list and add another commenter to my TV bookmarks! XD
ReplyDeleteI was looking over the list and saw that you had a second season of Bedlam as possible... Any news on that front?
Last I heard months ago was that the producers were writing the second season, but there was no confirmed Season 2 from BBC yet.....
True, but we are talking about a decision made by a network exec. Best not to assume any reasonable logic was used.
ReplyDeleteSupposedly it started filming 2 weeks ago.

I left the CW lounge long time ago... to much negativity. I prefer facebook anyway, I can have closed groups with just me and my friends and not have to read all the negative stuff. I say good riddances, I just hope CW doesn't cancel my favorite show on there SUPERNATURAL, as long as its on I'll stick by it, but after its over I know i'm done with CW
ReplyDeleteWTF IS THIS I DON'T EVEN. SERIOUSLY. WUT. Just, what?! That's so ridiculous! don't know what's worse, the fact that they're only giving people A SINGLE DAY'S notice, or the fact that they're moving to FACEBOOK. I'm sick of Facebook. Every site on the internet, it seems, wants you to link up to Facebook. I have a FB, but I rarely use it, and I don't want everything I do on the net to be broadcast to the people on there. Nice to have some privacy. Why on earth would I want to go to whatever they're setting up on FB? I'm not at all comfortable about chatting with people and having them see my real name. No thanks. And then there's this one day business. What?! If they absolutely MUST shut down (and why are they anyway? I don't think they gave a valid reason) they should give a lot more warning than single day! A week! Two! A month! Gah. Hope they're happy with themselves; they won't be seeing me there. I've found another site to go to. And I'll probably sign up on the forums here, as well. (As long as it's not required to have a FB/Twitter/whatever, that is.)
ReplyDeleteAck, I ranted.
LOL XD
ReplyDeleteDarque, that money will never go towards promotions or anything to actually justify it as a network, honestly I don't know how they've made it this far, I mean, I love Gossip Girl but it is the the LEAST watched show on network TV (it averages about 1.25 million US viewers this season), I have no idea who watches the new 90210, Smallville is wrapped, The Vampire Diaries is basically it's saving grace for the coveted demographic, It's like they don't even want SPN anymore, the only promos I see are Hart of Dixie (I'm thinking it's going to end up like Life Unexpected, get a second season but then poof) and Ringer (and not even so much anymore since the season started). Maybe the top brass are trying to muster up the money for bonuses, I don't know what the hell is going on over there.
ReplyDeleteThe other problem is that the CW doesn't allow you to link to outside sites. We've been trying to suggest other places to go, like the forums here and the thread got deleted because we had provided direct links. The board is dying tomorrow, but they don't want any other site to get traffic or for our community to find a place where we can come together.
ReplyDeleteWow CW, if your shows aren't doing well, Twitter is not going to save you, the fans are. Showing fans you care makes them care about watching your shows. I've never posted on the message boards but I have read them from time to time (when I have time =P). CW is already cutting corners by photoshopping the same pictures into new posters and having trailers that are 11 seconds long, will it really save them any money to shut down an online message board? Why not just have fb and twitter on top of the current message boards. A lot of my favourite shows are on CW but with this move, I don't think its TV to Tweet About.
ReplyDeletewhy no tag for the secret circle? this site hate our show!
ReplyDeleteThis site doesn't hate your show. That's a weird accusation to make.
ReplyDeleteyikes.. great move, CW..
ReplyDeleteAh, the CW doing its best to tick off viewers one impassioned fan at a time. It's an annual occurrence. Networks try to promote buzz for their network through their shows. Poor little netlet CW can only manage to do it through their bad decisions.
ReplyDeleteWell at least you got the opportunity to have your say in the first place. In Australia we don't have the opportunity to offer any such comments and this has meant that we no longer get Vampire Diaries on free to air. All CW shows are now featured on pay per view and right now they are showing season one of Vampire Diaries and won't be showing Season 3 until they have finished running 44 episodes (season 1 & 2) so I don't think we'll get it until March of next year. There is no avenue to complain or compliment any of the shows on our free to air tv and are basically at the mercy of money hungry, ratings driven beaurecrats. Where's the justice???
ReplyDeletewhat the hell is up with the CW? THIS JUST REALLY SUCKS!
ReplyDeleteIt's left me wondering why. I'm not savy about how TV works. Is this an early sign they're going belly up?
ReplyDeleteSame here. Once you let a site become so negative it's very hard to turn it around :( I guess they want people to use Facebook/twitter so that some of the anonymity is lost too. The way some people speak to others on a forum is just disgusting :(
ReplyDeleteHey, it's the CW. Nothing they do surprises me.
ReplyDeleteThat is disgusting. I don't chat much elsewhere except here, facebook and ubuntu forums (that's a new one for me xD).
ReplyDeleteHopefully these disgruntled fans will find a new home here, I mean it is awesome :O
(Andy, you can make your cheque payable to Luke Farmer ;))
He he :)
ReplyDeleteWow, what a surprise. No, for real, when did the CW ever anything really to please their fans, huh?
ReplyDeleteI signed up for their forums, but could never get signed in. Tried every thing even getting new password. Anyway I have found a home here and am VERY happy..thanks
ReplyDelete:)
ReplyDeleteI don't know, but every company is all about social media now. Someone who doesn't understand a forum community probably thought it was very forward thinking to try to convert those fans over to Facebook or Twitter followers.
ReplyDeleteYep, I think that's exactly what's happened and the backlash on their forums shows how wrong they got it.
ReplyDeleteParticularly on a page where the accusation isn't even slightly relevant to the ongoing discussion.
ReplyDeleteI'll admit, the one time I did venture onto the CW forums I beat a hasty retreat before I drowned in negativity, so this move actually doesn't affect me personally. However, it does seem like a particularly bone-headed move on the part of the CW (and that's in a long and varied history of bone-headed moves): the passionate fanbase is the only thing they have going for them, why on earth would they actively try to piss them off?
ReplyDeleteI was always afraid to use the CW message boards because I always heard how rude and nasty those boards got. I'm guessing this has less to do with money and more to do with content. The one day thing is crap, though. What if you were busy the day they announced it, and went to sign on only to find everything was gone?
ReplyDeleteI can't say I'm very surprise, it remind me of last year when they push the mid-season premiere of SPN and Smallville and kept on closing the board and deleting post, even the posts that were polite and not angry, just demanding a reason....they never cared about the fans and never will
ReplyDeleteLike many of you, I never spent much time on the CW boards unless there was an answer to a question I was looking up, but it is completely ridiculous that they continue to do this stuff without thinking about the fans. I feel like the CW is operating under this strange belief that they're on par with the bigger networks. The problem is that they aren't. The bigger networks have more fans than they do, but for the most part, their fans are quieter and not nearly as passionate so making a move like that wouldn't really do much for making waves. Those networks have more than enough money to make up any lost revenue from a couple of fans jumping ship. The CW can't afford to do hasty things like that. Some fans are going out of their way to support every single company that advertises during SPN. Our intense, borderline crazy voting gives them free advertisement (Cover of TVGuide, anyone???). They need to get off their high horse and admit that they need us just as much, if not more, than we need them.
ReplyDeleteIt doesn't suprise me. It's no worst then when they pulled SPN's epiode to replay VD, the very day it was suppose to air, they gave SPN fans no warring! The CW should really apperciate the fans that they do have.
ReplyDeleteWell ... we can always talk here! :)
ReplyDeleteAlthough, is this that the CW isnt doing well at all!? oh no!!
You think the CW was negative? lol You need to go read TWoP if you want to read a negative forum. xD
ReplyDeleteOne can only hope all employers block access to Facebook. Employees need to be working while at work.
ReplyDeleteCW is most likely stinging from most of their lineup being lousy. Maybe they should sell the rights to their best shows and go away.
