As fans of The Walking Dead comic series know, Shane (Job Bernthal) has out-survived his comic counterpart by far. His survival has altered the direction of the Dead mythos from the comics and shaped the AMC series into something comic creator Robert Kirkman calls creatively fun for him.
"From the comic book standpoint, he's living on borrowed time, but the beauty of the show is that we can change things up," Kirkman tells us.
In the comics, Shane met his maker in Issue #6, before the survivors made it to the Greene farm. His presence on the farm in the television series lead to the early demise of farmhand Otis (Pruitt Taylor Vince), who survived much longer in the graphic novels. "The storyline with Otis and all of the different things that are happening on the farm because of Shane's presence are a pretty clear indication that this guy is a pretty good catalyst for story," Kirkman says. "Watching him change how the stories were told in the comic book is a lot of fun for me."

ReplyDeleteI can't compare to the comics having not read them, but I am enjoying what Shane brings to he series.... Merle and Daryl too!
ReplyDeleteI may be miffed if I had read the comics, but seeing as the creator is 100% behind the new material and the new spin on things caused by the made for TV characters... well, I am 100% behind it too.
I am glad I haven't read the comic books. Except for Vampire Diaries, I am usually a stickler if they don't follow the book. Why? That's a good question.
ReplyDeleteI am glad that Shane is still on the show. His character adds a lot to the show. Of course, now I am going to worry that his days are numbered.
Okay, I haven't seen episodes 4 and 5 yet, but I must say I really like Shane, probably even more than I do Rick cause those pure flawless heroes usually go on my nerves by how unhuman they are. I much prefer darker and more twisted characters, who are also good and loving deep inside but make tons of mistakes on the way. Much more interesting to watch.
ReplyDeleteRick isn't actually the perfect hero. He maybe starts out looking a bit like that, but he also has to make some tough calls and goes down a dark road. At least in the comics he does and I think at least to some point they'll adapt that in the show.
