Thunderstruck - AMC Buys Sci-Fi Drama From Paul Boardman, Scott Derrickson & David Eick

After hitting gold with horror series The Walking Dead, AMC is looking to expand its genre portfolio with a sci-fi drama. The cable network has bought Thunderstruck, an hourlong UFO project from feature writing/directing duo Paul Boardman and Scott Derrickson and former Battlestar Galactica executive producer David Eick. Boardman and Derrickson will write the drama, about powerful and enigmatic entities that begin appearing all over the world. After one shows up in the town of Great Falls, Montana, the local citizens must grapple with the dramatic effects and growing mystery of repeated visitations. Boardman and Derrickson will executive produce Thunderstruck with Eick. Derrickson is set to direct. This marks the first major foray into television for Boardman & Derrickson, who wrote The Exorcism Of Emily Rose, with Derrickson directing. The duo are writing Zwart Water for Derrickson to direct, with Charlize Theron attached to star and produce. Eick is co-writing two high-profile series projects with Guillermo Del Toro – Hulk at ABC, based on the Marvel character, and Inhuman at HBO.

  1. Sounds interesting. Also sounds like fierce competition for Shiban's The Voyage. I don't think AMC will do 2 sci-fi dramas.
And has anyone heard anything about this Inhuman project at HBO they also mentioned in this article? Couldn't find any info on it.

  2. AMC's development as of late appears to have shifted into a very specific direction. Personally, I'm not a big fan, but at least I still have 16 more episodes of the masterpiece that is "Breaking Bad".

  3. Yeah I couldn't find anything on inHuman either. Well, other than that the series is on Ken Wolt's resume! XD

  4. Yeah, same for me. After the end of Breaking Bad and Mad Men, I probably won't care much anymore about AMC.

  5. AMC's show development always had a very specific direction. They just look for shows that fit together with certain movie genres or movie fests they host. Like The Walking Dead for their Fear Fest (there have been shows like 99 Stories in development for that purpose) or Breaking Bad for an anti-hero night they once did (or still do, I have no clue).
Nevertheless while they have still good other dramas (I liked The Killing for instance), they don't have anything as brilliant as Breaking Bad or Mad Men in the pipeline. On the other hand, neither HBO or FX have a show like that on the air currently (although they both have great/good shows like Game of Thrones or Justified), SHO might have one with Homeland, but that show needs to prove it can run for multiple seasons first.
Excellent shows like that just don't grow on trees.

  6. Spot on.
Frankly, I love the newer AMC series. I thought Rubicon deserved a second season and was one of the better new seriesw last year.

I think The Killing was VERY well done too. The finale lost me some ONLY because of how they said we would know the killer at the end of each season.

I think Hell on Wheels is brilliant in concept.. I'm not sure its execution will live up to the high AMC standards just yet, but I think it deserve its chance....

  7. The title, HBO and the involvement of Eick and especially Del Toro made me curious.

  10. There definitely are a few people here who mourned the cancellation of Rubicon.

  12. Thanks, yep, the developers are aware. I don't think the points are "lost" just not displaying properly.

  14. I think it's ok to keep going. You should still be awarded the points etc. They just arn't displaying correctly in the leaderboards.

  15. If it's horror, Sci Fi, Fantasy, I will always check it out.  Truthfully it doesn't sound one bit interesting.  However, AMC has never disappointed me.  I am looking forward to the other shows too.
