i thought it was good there wasnt really anything big or exciting except for charming waking up (which I figured would happen soon). Its not the same tho without Robert in the episode and next weeks looks fantastic! It was good though I don’t know what else to say lol
The Good: Snow White the thief.... unexpected, but as soon as I saw the shape land on the carriage I know who it was. Just not enough petite women on the show to make me wonder I guess. Still a pretty good twist on Snow post Huntsmean days.
The scenes in Storybrooke were some better. Nice to see Sark again! The Mayor was fun as always and Henry still manages to be one of the best characters if not actors on the show. The make-up on the trolls was pretty bad but it was campy and kind of worked for a fairly tale world. The climbing and falling FX were thankfully much better than last week's VFX!
Looks like Ruby likes attention. I would have expected Little Red Riding Hood's alternate to be more demure. Oh well...
Really nice to see Anastasia Griffith (Abigail or the Prince's consort) who played Katie on Damages the first 2 seasons and Emily (Hank's competitor/girlfriend) on Royal Pains! Always liked her. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Bad: Seriously? More apple close-ups at Mayor Mill's house? Someone needs to put a moratorium on apple close-ups!
Not a big fan of the dialogue or the acting on the Enchanted Forest side tonight. It once again struck that perfect mix of not campy enough to be a fairy tale, but not real enough to be a separate reality - the perfect mix to take me out of the scene. IT all felt very juvenile to me.
Ever tried to throw dust? Never mind the fact that they were on top of a bridge over a chasm and it would be very windy... It's not exactly a long range target weapon! XD It would have been far more believable if the entire vial was tossed so it would shatter and launch the dust into the air around her target/s. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This episode sorely missed Mr. Gold/ Rumpelstiltskin! Without Robert Carlyle to center the series it felt very flat to me.
As I watch I seem to role my eyes more than anything. No intensity, adequate writing and adequate acting with below average VFX..... and now they toss in some love triangles to boot. Thus endeth my attempt to watch this series. It's just anything near my type of series.
I completely agree with you, although the way they met wasn't what I expected but I loved it anyway. And then the way they met in the present I thought was great until as you said the blonde bitch showed up. It was a great episode!!
I am loving this show. Yes, there are moments that are eye rollers because of cheesiness, but every episode, I am getting more involved with the characters. The evil queen/mayor plays a really good bitch and she gets my blood boiling. For now, I wish someone would at least slap her really hard.
I liked this episode but not as much as the others. I found Henry and Emma irritating today and I just don't click with the Snow White and Prince James story. Or more accurately, I don't care about either one in the "real" world. I thought the fairy-tale versions were a lot better today than previously.
I missed Rumpelstiltskin too and I agree that the story feel flat without him. Actually without any really good conflict scenes. The conflict between Emma and Regina feels more campy than fairy tale land and none of the conflict in the Snow and Prince scenes had much weight for me. I also agree on the love triangle thing. I hate triangles. Currently I'm rooting for blonde chick (whom I hated on Royal Pains) because Mary Margaret looked pathetic and creepy staring at John Doe and Blondie. I know they were going for tragic and hurt, but it isn't working for me. We need to get back to the villains because they are the most dynamic people in the story.
Still I am sticking with it. Cinderella vs Rumpelstiltskin sounds like a winner. Although I don't see how this could be carried out in the "real" world. All Cindy would have to do is cry kidnapping and crisis averted.
I'm just disappointed that each week the same weaknesses (to me) continue if not get worse.
I agree on the Emma and Regina bits, but I carry it over to almost any conflict scene (maybe even any genre) without Robert Carlyle. The dialogue on the series is just so trite that it really needs a good actor to deliver it. Without a performance like Carlyle gives as both Mr. Gold and Rumpelstiltskin it just fails to me. Goodwin has yet to nail a scene in either world in my opinion. Emma is good with Henry, but just silly with Mayor Mills, and Regina is kind of one-note all the time in either world. Although I can except it more in the Enchanted Forest side of things.
I may check it out again since next week should be a Carlyle-centric episode... Plus I like Jessie Schram from Veronica Mars.
Not to say the Prince is wooden, but the actor who plays Prince Charming makes Thomas Dekker on The Secret Circle look like Bryan Crnaston on Breaking Bad! XD
Apologies to the Cranston family for any insults incurred.
Ha! He did do a remarkable job as a coma patient. I will refrain from assessing the Thomas Dekker issue since people have already accused me of being way to harsh with Secret Circle. (whispers - "but you're right")
I thought I was the only one concerned about Goodwin. Every scene she's in falls flat to me and her characterization moves from whiny to fence post to creepy in a totally unintentional way for me. I don't find her performance at all believable and her "real-side" character is a complete farce. No teacher would ever interfere that much against a parent's wishes especially if there was nothing to go to DFS with. I understand that Storybrooke is a hybrid between reality and fairy tale but it should at least be grounded in some type of rules that make sense. Emma would be run out of town by now for stalking a kid, Henry would be in boarding school, Mary Margaret would be formally reprimanded, and Jiminy Cricket (the psychiatrist version) would be up against a review board. Nothing about any of that makes sense.
You touched on my problem with the series as a whole.... It's not grounded.
The fairy tale side is a mish-mash and not grounded in fairy tales or reality. Storybrooke is not ground enough in reality to be real, but for me personally it is not campy or charming enough to be a hybrid either.
Every series should be- nay, NEEDS to be grounded in reality. If not our personal reality, they need to create their own reality that may be unique to the series, but still makes sense on a basic common sense level. It either needs to be believable or it needs to be obvious in its farce or "non-believability". For me OUaT is neither.
I like the concept of the series, but the execution I have issues with.
On the list of pretty good reasons to end a blind date...in ability to stop staring at someone else's backside is a pretty good one. LOL
I am a closet romantic. Prince Charming laying his hand on Snow White's as she read....this little voice in my head went "yeeeee!"
The evil witch *does* know, doesn't she? Am I nuts? At the very least she knows about the players in a conceptual sense."She's gonna kill me and then you and then me again." :-DThe evil witch is...diabolical. Love her! That closet romantic I mention earlier? She's mighty disappointed that patience will be required before she can see Snow White and Prince Charming together again. (But I am grateful to the person on this board who warned me not to expect a lovers reunion at the of this ep. otherwise I might have been really upset.)the troll design was awesome. Kicked my brain trying to put 1 and 1 together to come up with Sleepy (i.e the 7 Dwarfs)I am still not a fan of the pixie hair cut.
I finally stopped worrying about how the show would work in the long term. I'm liking the way it's shaping up. We've got Henry's attempts to put memories back and next week's promos imply that we'll also be seeing some fairytales play out. Looks great
I thought it was a pretty good episode. The loved the Snow White/Prince Charming scenes in the fairytale world. They have great chemistry together.
Prince Charming was excellent, and sorely missed after being MIA last week. I like his personality and I can completely buy him falling for Snow White.
Snow White admits to ruining the Queen's life. Interesting. It's the real world that annoyed me this week. Mary Margaret was just pathetic this episode. The only nice scenes with her this week were the ones with Emma.Henry is starting to annoy me. We've seen no evidence of him being mistreated by Regina. If I treated my mother the way he treats her, I would have received the spanking of a lifetime. I get that she's the Evil Queen and everything, but seeing her be mean to her kid would do a lot more for me to root for Henry in those scenes. You would think being an evil queen and all, Regina would discipline the kid.Speaking of Henry: When he isn't out disobeying his mom(s), all he does is spout exposition and wander around town accusing people of being fictional characters. I liked him well enough in the pilot, so I'll blame the writing for this. For some reason, Emma and Henry sneaking around behind Regina's back is all kinds of weird to me.
Regina screwing with Mary Margaret and David by introducing a "wife" makes sense to me. The bet way to deny Prince Charming his happy ending is to tear him away from Snow White and put him back in the arranged marriage. Smart move by the Evil Queen.
Awesome ep. Loved the storybook twists on Snow not being exactly what she's supposed to be and that Charming wasn't living an ideal life at the time as well. Kudos to the writers for a fresh take on some very old stories, and to the actors for bring them to life.
This episode was so amazing! I loved the not so pure Snow White and her encounter with James! I am so sad in our world when David awoke because of Snow's kiss that he is supposedly married to the shrew who was his fiance in the other world.
I absolutely loved the back story behind Snow White/Prince Charming.. it was a fun twist on a classic, and I'm looking forward to the next time they meet :) such a fun episode
I think it's going to be really interesting how it plays out - you could tell at the end that he still sensed that connection between them, and I don't think his "wife" is going to like what happens when he eventually seeks Mary Margaret out! :)
lol u guys had a lot to say. I agree robert carlyle not being in the ep was a dissapointment because he's my favorite actor in the show and thats why next week's looks awsome! Anyways, I like ginnifer when she's snow white she has more depth but as mary shes flat to me. Most of the other characters were good but i think they underused regina more in this ep (probably because of last weeks). I was more in to the fairy part of the story lol last night for the first time and i agree with darque that the effects were a little better but not yet at average vfx. I gave this a 8.5/10 (taking .5 away for not having robby in it >=I
Despite the indescribably stupid fairy dust throwing scene, this was pretty good. The dynamic between Henry, Mary-Margaret, and Emma made it work. I was also highly amused that Red Riding Hood is a bit trashy. I was also interested to see that Anastasia Griffith took another "love interest that no one will like" role after the one she finished up last season on Royal Pains.
I loved it! And I'm always wandering, does Regina really know about the curse? Because one could argue that she inflicted the curse upon everyone, including her. She knows that she's in power, and she's just making sure, day in and day out, that she stays that way...
Hmmm, actually Henry manages to annoy me quite a bit. And the comparison to Chandler Riggs on The Walking Dead who is just an amazing child actor doesn't help either.
Not a lot to add to what you said. I'm often pretty annoyed by the stupidity. Snow White walking right into Charming's trap even though there were suddenly 4 ropes coming out of the ground as the worst example for me. Still, the show has its moments and I actually think I'll give it another few episodes. It's nowhere near the quality of other Sunday shows (mainly Homeland and The Walking Dead), but it's entertaining nonetheless.
My comment on Henry being one of the better actors was not so much saying how good he is, but saying how bad most of the others are. XD
I agree Riggs is much better. No contest. He is seems like he is in the moment and in a real life situation where as Henry sometimes does feel like he is doing a scene on TV more than a moment of real life. I still like him more than at least half the other characters though.
IF it were on a different day I may watch more episodes, but Sunday is the best night of TV with Boardwalk Empire, Dexter, The Walking Dead, Homeland and now Hell on Wheels. Then add on Sunday series in different Cable seasons like Game of Thrones and Mad Men... and soon to start series like House of Lies and Luck. (I think I'm forgetting something too)
That's like 10 shows that are far superior to OUaT... Too much quality is on Sunday night to add another series I kinda like at times.
Yeah, I only knew a few of the actors. It was clear to me that Morisson would be no revelation, but Goodwin has been a disappointment and we haven't seen a lot of Carlyle yet. And it was weird seeing Esposito in such an almost goofy role after 2 1/2 seasons of Breakig Bad.
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.
I loved it so much! Prince Charming/James and Snow White are so cute!
ReplyDeleteAnd that blonde bitch that is supposedly his wife needs to GTFO immediately, thank you very much.
God, this show is amazing.
If I'd had a teacher that looked like Ginnifer Goodwin, I might have been a more attentive student. ;)
ReplyDeletei thought it was good there wasnt really anything big or exciting except for charming waking up (which I figured would happen soon). Its not the same tho without Robert in the episode and next weeks looks fantastic! It was good though I don’t know what else to say lol

That woman really is evil. I mean seriously. The way she planned all that.....
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with you, although the way they met wasn't what I expected but I loved it anyway. And then the way they met in the present I thought was great until as you said the blonde bitch showed up. It was a great episode!!
ReplyDeleteLike the episode is good to know more about Snow White and Prince Charming history.
ReplyDeleteWas a great episode till the blonde showed up at the end. But if she wouldn't have showed up, would have made it too easy.
ReplyDeleteI am loving this show. Yes, there are moments that are eye rollers because of cheesiness, but every episode, I am getting more involved with the characters. ReplyDeleteIt was a great episode!!
ReplyDeleteGreat, not awesome.

ReplyDeleteI put it down as "Great"
