Loved Durant wanting to show all the carnage of the battle scene, even if it meant adding some of his own! XD The idea of a ruthless businessman doing what he knows needs to be done and willing to accept the negative image it gives him is awesome.
So many series this year have the most inept villains that are not deserving of any fear or respect. He is easily the best villain of the new season of TV!
The Swede is awesome. Nice to see a big shot that actually controls their environment. Too bad I fear he is not long for this world. Men that cross Cullen don't seem to have long life expectancies! XD
Love Cullen and his initiative ans "street smarts"! He seems to have the right mix of common sense and thinking outside the box (for his time) that makes a successful man... be he an assassin, a foreman a man on a mission or all of the above!
Best part of the series is that it shows the horrors of the Civil War in a more realistic way than many series. Anderson was just notorious in its cruelty on all levels. Life in that era was disgusting and filthy even in most "cities". On the edge of territories it was absolutely feral.
So far I am LOVING this series. Sure it lacks in some needed story honing maybe, but I love the grittiness and the reality of it. Not to mention there are no cookie cutter cardboard cut-outs for characters - no pure white heroes and no raven black villains. No gimmicks to distract from a poor story because the story is what the series is about....
This was a much better episode than the pilot for me. Tighter overall story with better transitions.
I seldom vote anything AWESOME because it just seems like such a teenybopper kind of word, but "Hell on Wheels" deserves the praise. This show is fantastic, and last night's episode was wonderful.
I actually enjoyed this episode quite a lot. It was a big improvement over the pilot and one of the main reasons might be Durant. On the one hand he is the character that connects all those different story lines together. In the pilot we had Cullen's story with a bit of Elam to it, then there was Durant's story and Lily's story, but it all felt disconnected. This time all of them came together even though Lily still is out there, nevertheless she'll definitely get to Hell on Wheels next week. On the other hand Durant is a great character. Ruthlessly re-building and exaggerating the carnage done by the Sioux (I think it were Sioux...) at the camp, telling the reporter what to write and making Cullen his new foreman. Great stuff.
The Swede was a great addition and mase the loss of Ted Levine more acceptable for me. I hope he'll be around for a while, because his story line with the McGinnes brothers was also interesting.
Please give Tom Noonan more to do. He was awesome as Reverend, great actor!
Surprisingly they managed to really make me care about Lily's survival. They built her up as a likeable character in the pilot and even though she didn't say a word this episode I enjoyed her plot.
And I still don't get why some reviews said this show doesn't have a sense of humour. For example Cullen reaching for his hat while he was on the run made me smile.
It's not a perfect show, but I've got to say it was a big improvement over the mediocre pilot and I'm looking forward to more.
I enjoyed this episode much more than the first. Now that the characters have been introduced we're starting to flesh them out which is always the best part of a character driven drama for me.
Colm Meaney is flat out fabulous.
I loved the Swede - that guy (can't remember his name) is so darn creepy - especially with those uber red lips. I always thought he was creepy in Sanctuary as Jack the Ripper ... go figure. One of his henchmen also has guest spots in Sanctuary - I was waiting for Amanda Tapping to sashay out of the whore house ... or whore tent rather.
I really enjoyed the Lily story this week - last week she was a bore - this week she was smart and resourceful.
I don't get the 2 Irish brothers story - move it along or cut it.
Everytime I see Ted Levine's character (even though is was just in the "previously on ...") - I keep waiting for him to pull out the little phonograph bell to put in his ear - it must be the uniform and the accent.
Loved this episode,it was so much better then the pilot, the storyline finally taking off....I really like Cullen but i'm not sure if he has/will give up killing for a living? I had to laugh when he was escaping from the boxcar and going through the floorboard with The Swede about to unlock the door,Cullen reaches for his hat,That was crazy funny.I hope they give The Swede lots of air time this season,we know hes going to keep his eyes on Cullen, waiting and watching....When Durant screamed because there weren't enough bodies on the field,he wanted more carnage and got it. I just read everyone's comment and are basically saying the same thing...i am so excited for the next episode,it is turning out to be exactly what i wanted. :)
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.
I'm done with the show. I gave it another chance and I didn't like it. Sad because I was really looking forward to it, too.
