I really liked it. Great interactions between the characters all around. The case was good too. I really felt for that couple. The shapeshifter and alt universe stories sometimes lose me because I have trouble remembering the backstory, but this type of stand-alone case worked well.
First, I gotta say I thoroughly enjoyed Stephen Root and Romy Rosemont's performances, such chemistry (no duh!) Secondly, Peter trying to get back to his own timeline is going to be an interesting arc, but I wonder how that would play out with David Robert Jones being the man bad guy(s) in this season. Both can't happen can they? So sad...Go season of Peter!
It was good, but White Tulip covered this ground two seasons ago. I liked Raymond and his wife Kate (played by real-life couple Stephen Root and Romy Rosemont). Peter's dream in the beginning was, I think, a flashback to the interval between the moment Peter stepped into the machine in The Last Sam Weiss and the 2026 future in The Day We Died. While I'm not entirely convinced of what this Peterless universe is yet, this episode was a significant step to answering some questions. My faith in Pinkner and Wyman is returning, slowly but surely, and I look forward to next week's fall finale.
I think the repetitive nature of this episode (as compared to White Tulip) was by design. Both to pay homage to White Tulip like previous episodes were callbacks, and to illustrate humanities nature of repeating past events (or even personal actions) over and over because of basic human desires that cause people to lose their judgement of the greater good.
I agree about the "time bubble".... I can't quite whether or not that bubble is within the machine itself and Peter is still in it - within and without space and time.... or if his past actions of accessing the machine now allow him to reach back through time and space in his attempt to return to the when and where of his choosing.
Did he leave himself a trail of inter-dimensional bread crumbs that he can follow back via the machine? Is he still inside the machine (somewhere and "somewhen") so he can still use it? Or did the Observer's act of attempting to erase him actually give him a sort of back door he is using?
Right now I have have the beginnings of concepts about how aspects fit together, but no real combining theory. Every time I narrow down my theories, FRINGE seems to toss a monkey wrench in and make me rethink it all! XD What I love about the series....
Just watched it and have a question. Does Peters line about being in the wrong place mean the time line or another dimension? I mean is the "world" he is at now is another AU version of the last three years? He never existed here at all this is just where we was spit out from the machine?
Josh Jackson was amazing in this episode, and it hard to shine when you have John Noble and Anna Torv, they are brilliant. So, kudos to Joshua for his stellar acting.
I did love the episode, mythology, emotions, progress in the storyline, great guest stars. Fringe was the whole package tonight
Fringe is not clear about the differences between universe, dimensions, realitys and timeline. Are they the same thing? I don't know, so expect anything
It certainly seems like he "returned" to the wrong universe one where he never existed as an adult.
Now is that accurate or not is the question. Even if he has returned to the correct timeline in the correct universe have his actions while in the machine 'erased' him from everyone else's reality?
This was my favorite of the season thus far. It hurt to watch, from every angle (sort of like Marionette), but FRINGE is great at doing that. I am extremely confused with the timeline/reality, but I think I'm supposed to be, however vexing that is.
I think they treat universes as a space thing and timeline as obviously a time thing. The space can be the same, but if the timeline is different, this makes an alternate reality. So in the past seasons, there was only 1 reality and 2 universes (both within 1 timeline). But in season 4, there are 2 realities (1 present and the other Peter originated from, perhaps still in existence) and 2 universes (both in a separate timeline). The universes are the same in that the characters interact with basically the same objects (like people over there have better technology), but the timeline altered choices and relationships within these 2 universes, encompassed by reality. Dimensions are just more space-time stuff which makes my head explode.
I enjoyed this episode very much. I vote for 'awesome' the first time for this season. I've always thought this is our blue universe with altered timeline. I was like "Uh oh!" when Peter said he has to get home where everyone know him. Oh man, my brain hurts...
Please add epic-just for Fringe! I can't even begin to explain how I feel after watching the episode (which I'm going to rewatch right now!) Strangest thing...after watching this,I'm filled with hope (and I have a huge smile in my face!)
Awesome episode, moreso than usual, and I felt for Stephen Root's character at the end. I'll admit it, I teared up at the wife's message to him. Hoping Peter can get everything back to normal or people here start to remember the lives back in the previous seasons somehow, like Lost minus the post-death aspect of it.
Just in time for summer (NZ): the Fringe diet: Watch one episode. Do not move. Do not breathe. Do not blink. After episode: Jump up and down and scream repeatedly. Run around the house several times. Until next episode: Spend the entire time with your stomach in knots with sporadic jumping/running/frustrated expressions of agony. If symptoms subside: Watch the promo for the next ep or preferably a sneak peek.
If they keep this up I'll be wearing a bikini this Christmas >.<
Now that you mention it your right, what a blast from the past! You can even take that one step further, will Peter return to his timeline/reality or will he wind up like Scott Bakula,in Quantium Leap and not return at all?
I am enjoying Fringe but it's frustrating that all the characters' dynamics that the past three seasons have developed are just gone. It's a bit unsettling too. Its like we're being trolled. "LOL none of that shit that happened before actually matters!" I feel like I spent so much time getting invested in these characters and their dynamic with each other... And now it's just all gone. I am struggling with that. It's like they totally rebooted the show and it does not feel anything like what I've been watching for 3 years.
The cable system went down around 7.30 p.m. I was going through a mix of anger with shades of panic. In the past when this has happened,it's been down for hours. Thankfully it began coming back on less than an hour later. I was able to watch Fringe and the show didn't let me down. First time I've ever had feelings like that when in danger of missing a television show. Fringe is the greatest
Finally watched it. Awesome stuff! Loves the 'The Constant' feel around the mid-point with Peter's time jumping! Ironically 'The Constant' was episode 4.05 and this episode 4.06 so both LOST and Fringe introduced this at similar times!
Stephen Root, who I've always loved, was phenomenal. This episode was on par with episode 4.02 as episode of the season so far in my opinion!
Josh's subtle performance always blows me away, he has amazing talent and has a special way of delivering hurt and smart looks at the same time. One thing I love about his acting is that it doesn't give you the impression that he is performing, but he makes you feel as if what's happening on screen is so believable in an unbelievable way. His interactions with Anna and Noble make me anxious and fearful that one day we'll never see more of those breathtaking moments! He's wonderful actor, and I loved that he got the chance to do more in this episode and how he beautifully delivered it! Sometimes I feel so bad because people who are not watching this show are really missing out some great acting quality TV show.
The episode was brilliantly written, and beautifully interpreted. I identified completely with the entire situation and how it came about.
The most funny line of Walter, in my book at least, was "Spider-man fanny-pack". LOL
What was most heart braking for me, was not Raymond finding out that Kate had block out the entries of her notebook; to which I cried like a little girl by the way; but in it self that final scene was so cold between Peter and Olivia that it made me cringe. I don't lose hope though.
The dream was really sweet but what I loved more about it was the fact that they actually put a kid to push Walter-OMG!Did anyone else catch that?
"Is it any wonder that I've got too much time on my hands?": Whoever thought of putting this particular song deserves my respect!
(talking to Walter) I didn't know what a faraday cage is and I'm not a baboon! That did hurt my feelings Walter!
The pararel between our characters and this week's storyline was obvious and unbelievably well written: Raymond talking to his lost wife was like Peter talking to Olivia after having come back from the future and having witnessed her death!(I fell for it!)
On another topic,I'm officially OK with this version of Olivia starting a romance with Linc(at least one poor Lincoln will get one Olivia!) because now we know that they simply don't remember him cause he ACTUALLY never existed here!Besides our Olivia has Peter, why can;t this one find some happpiness? It's kind of a releaf actually because this Olivia being so cold towards Peter(she couldn't even stand him touching her!) was heartbreaking! Her words especially ("you were a stranger so why would I feel anything?"---come on now,he has suffered enough!)
So Peter is in the wrong timeline/universe/whatever
---I 'm starting to think that when future Walter sent future Peter in the past to warn them he accidentally sent him to this other whatever---
"Well I hope that you get back to her" ME TOO!!!And I like to believe that our Olivia (Olivia No#1) somewhere out there was having the same dream with Peter (he asked for a reason!!)
Isn't it weird that every week we're like "best episode so far"??
I thoroughly enjoyed this episode. Even though the anvil-dropping between the case of the week and the characters' plight detoured well before subtle, the two actors were amazing and I found myself as engrossed in their story as I was in Peter, Walter, and Olivia's. I like that they had to depend on Peter's brains and qualifications to solve the case because it made him feel like a part of the team again. Walter is thawing despite his hesitance and I can't wait until they have a real conversation again.
I voted great. I enjoyed the episode but I must admit that Peter's revelation in the end left me with mixed feelings (which weren't there before!) about the current season 4.
If Peter is right that means that those characters we're seeing are completely independent from those we knew from the past three years. Well in that case, some things doesn't make sense to me. For instance, how can we explain the season 3 finale? When Peter disappeared, our Walter and Olivia seemed to have switched between their usual self to these season 4 versions instantly. Weird, no? Then we also had the Observers' conversation. We know that they are not affected by timelines, universes, realities etc. so why would December even considered the possibility of them remembering Peter?! o.O If they were now in another reality (the Peterless reality) completely different and independent from the one we knew shouldn't the fact that they don't remember Peter be like obvious to an Observer? Instead we had December making that remark to September like it could have been otherwise, like it wasn't a known fact. Also how can we explain these season 4 Olivia and Walter having dreams and hallucinations of Peter? If they are yet another version, having nothing to do with our blue Olivia and Walter, why would they see a man they never knew in the first place? How is that possible?
I guess this revelation doesn't sit well with me because it now makes me confused as to how should I consider these characters we're seeing. How could I invest myself in their story? If Peter is right that means that apart from him all characters we have been introduced to in season 4 (Olivia, Walter, Fauxlivia, Alt-Lee, nerdy Lincoln, Astrid, Walternate, etc) have nothing to do with the past three seasons. As someone who've watched all previous seasons of Fringe, that thought is disconcerting. I mean that obviously I would want for the past 3 seasons to not go to waste, I would want those characters and stories I invested myself in to be back which in turn could only happen if we bid adieu to those season 4 versions. Therefore they are temporary. Then how can I bring myself to care for them? Why would I want Peter to even connect with them? Why should I want to discover their story? To what end? So that resumes to say how can I even care/invest myself in season 4 as it is now??? :(
Adored this episode, I think this season has had the strongest guest character of the week which helps elevates the non myth episodes into a league of their own. To be able to really feel for the characters in the space of 43 minutes and completely and utterly understand their pain is a testament to the writing and the class actors they are getting in. Favourite ep of the season along with 04x02.
I'm late commenting but I missed it on Friday, watched it last night (Sat.). Awesome episode. When Walter turned away from Peter and got emotional, it made me feel for every parent who's lost a child and wonders what they'd be like. I wish Walter would just go along with it.
I liked Olivia finally understanding that Peter and the Olivia from another dimension had something going on.
Some are comparing this episode to White Tulip. I will have to rewatch that. I also want to see Firefly again, because that might relate.
Who says this reality will stick? The episode pretty more indicated that Peter is trying to get back to the Universe he truly belongs to. Perhaps this will happen soon.
To me Peter's statement is what he thinks - its not necessarily 'The Truth' as far as our viewpoint goes: during the break STV posted interviews that strongly indicated that these are our guys, but that the rug was proverbially pulled out from under them. I'm like you in that we've invested in so many variants now I'm so hesitant to connect - but I guess that's to help us parallel what Peter's going through: can you imagine!!
Just brilliant. Case-wise - it was great, there was a good balance of everyone working together. But the real high-point was seeing the interactions between Peter and the other characters. It's heartbreaking to see Olivia consider Peter a stranger and Walter reject him but it's compelling viewing. Great performances from the main 3 as usual. I hope we see some acceptance coming soon though. I loved the first and last scenes with the dream and Olivia acknowledging that a version of her was important to Peter. Can't wait to see what's ahead.
I didn't see these interviews. If you have a link that would be great, I'd like to watch them :)
A part of me thought it was a character assumption too and I'm gonna continue to watch the show with that in mind. But now that Peter thinks that he is in the wrong place, we're in for interesting viewing relationship wise if it turns out that indeed we were right and this IS his world...
That's for sure it sucks being Peter Bishop at the moment...
Well in the Comics that recently came out, apparently the A story is cannon (Josh Jackson had a hand in writing them) DarthLocke knows way more about this than me, but they mention Peter taking the machine back into different time periods to hide the machine. If that is true to the show's cannon, then it is possible that coming back through a wormhole resulted in him being brought out of phase and into a different set of universes wherein he died as a boy in both, as we now know. And being here (there) he is surrounded by a time bubble just waiting to zap him back to the future, after having done whatever he is there to do.
Erg, I feel bad now - its *somewhere* in the show list, but I can't remember more than it was from the producers and it was during the break (there were a lot of them...)
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.
I think Peter is his own time-bubble
ReplyDeleteAwesome, as usual!
ReplyDeleteMy comment disappeared? I said that I think Peter is his own time-bubble
ReplyDeleteAwesome but it's Fringe so
ReplyDeletegreat, i loved the dream, i feel so bad for peter poor guy. I hope he gets back to her too... YOU think he will??
ReplyDeleteLove this episode, cant wait to see what the week comes up with it.
9.5 reluctant feauxolivia flashbacks
b/c i wanted more dreams. That was great
implied awesomeness right.
ReplyDeleteLove this show and love that Peter is back. I feel so bad for him but I'm riveted to the screen.
ReplyDeleteI really liked it. Great interactions between the characters all around. The case was good too. I really felt for that couple. The shapeshifter and alt universe stories sometimes lose me because I have trouble remembering the backstory, but this type of stand-alone case worked well.

ReplyDeleteLoved the episode! One of the better of the season for me.
ReplyDeleteI like the parallels with White Tulip, another brilliant episode!
Seeing Liv and Peter fall back into (forward into?) their old routine and play off one another was just comfortable for me... and comforting!
Walter is taking baby-steps in his own obstinate way. Gotta love him!
ReplyDeleteYes, of course it is. I didn't mean to denigrate this episode in comparison to White Tulip, I was just noting the similarities.
ReplyDeleteCooments still there. XD For me at least....

When are you going to add epic to your poll?
ReplyDeleteActually make that beyond epic.
Fringe Rocks! Already can't wait for next week.
I see shades of SLIDERS. It may not be as easy to pinpoint the right universe.
ReplyDeleteJust watched it and have a question. Does Peters line about being in the wrong place mean the time line or another dimension? ReplyDeleteOne of my favorite S4 epi thus far and yep it was really very FRINGE indeed!

ReplyDeleteYes! Oh, they so need some nod to Sliders - old love affair of mine! Thanks for the memories!
ReplyDeleteJust in time for summer (NZ): the Fringe diet:
ReplyDeleteWatch one episode.
I think I voted "awesome" one other time... maybe.
ReplyDeleteThis was my favorite episode of the season though.
Thanks for the review of the concepts... I was thinking the same thing
ReplyDeleteNow that you mention it your right, what a blast from the past! You can even take that one step further, will Peter return to his timeline/reality or will he wind up like Scott Bakula,in Quantium Leap and not return at all?
ReplyDeleteSometimes you make my brain hurt, lol! :)
ReplyDeleteThis is my favorite episode of the season. It's so good to have Peter back. I missed his interactions with the rest of the team.
ReplyDeleteNow you said that, I don't know how to vote if there were more awesome episodes in the future. LOL

Thanks for the comment! She got right in my face one morning when I was in bed and I had a camera nearby so I snapped her photo.
ReplyDeleteShe is a cutie! I have 9 myself so i guess you could say i'm a little partial to them. :)

I'm like you in that we've invested in so many variants now I'm so hesitant to connect - but I guess that's to help us parallel what Peter's going through: can you imagine!!
ReplyDeleteJust brilliant.
ReplyDeleteI didn't see these interviews. If you have a link that would be great, I'd like to watch them :)
ReplyDeleteA part of me thought it was a character assumption too and I'm gonna continue to watch the show with that in mind.
ReplyDeleteErg, I feel bad now - its *somewhere* in the show list, but I can't remember more than it was from the producers and it was during the break (there were a lot of them...)
ReplyDeleteLol :)
