Thanks to Bob for the heads up.
Next week will be crucial for ABC’s new drama Pan Am. The network is expected to decide whether to pick up additional episodes from the 1960s airline soap/spy drama (ABC gave the Sony Pictures TV-produced show an order for 5 scripts last week), and Pan Am will have its highest-profile oversees debut on BBC2. So far, the period drama is off to a solid start internationally, performing stronger abroad than it has in the US. Pan Am, which has been sold in 107 countries by Sony Pictures TV International, has launched in 6. Ratings for 5 of them — Canada, Sweden, Ireland, Norway and Spain — have come in, and in all but one, Pan Am was the most watched new U.S. drama premiere this fall.

Pan Am will premier in Denmark on the 30th this November. I'm going to check it out then, see what it's all about. :)
ReplyDeleteCool, hope you enjoy it :)
ReplyDeleteInteresting. If there is strong interest overseas in Pan Am then there might be a chance for it to be renewed. A slight chance but it will give them better odds...
ReplyDeleteI've just started watching in Ireland. I wouldn't say it's great, but so far I've enjoyed it. Hopefully it's given a chance.
ReplyDeleteOkay, this is my overall analysis for Pan Am
ReplyDelete- In the United States, it's somewhere in between a flop and a surviving
- Internationally it's far more successful (this is probably because American's are more familiar with the Pan Am branding, making it seem less glamourous, meaning less people want to watch it, where people in Norway and Sweden, find it less common and therefore more intriguing)
- Being the highest launch in five out of the six countries it's premiered in is nice, but not particular valuable, especially in countries like Spain, where it's not such a big deal
- Canada is an important one here, Canada and the US have pretty much the same marketing strategy, if it's making money in Canada, they will pay a lot more than countries like Norway to keep bringing it back
- It launching on BBC2 is a big deal in England. The BBC went through a budget crisis a few years ago, and, correct me if I'm wrong but I can't remember an American show landing any broadcast network since Heroes, meaning there's a lot of confidence in it to succeed in England - (also, coincidentally, I went to record Pan Am today and it listed it as a 22 episode series, so maybe the BBC know something)
- Having the highest/second launch ever could be good for ABC, at the moment their main overseas export is Desperate Housewives, with this ending this season, ABC won't have much airing over broad (especially not much high profile), admittedly, Modern Family is filling this void, but the network could use some overseas sales, Grey's is far weaker internationally than Desperate Housewives, so ABC could use a big international seller (to be honest, I'm think thats why Ugly Betty received a fourth season)
And this is why Pan Am will receive a back nine, if not six seasons and a movie.
I hope it gets picked up as well.
ReplyDeleteI would love that american broadcasting companies would look more into foreign markets in their selling strategies, It's sad that my viewing habits don't matter.
ReplyDeleteIf American networks can makes shows and sell them for a bucket load of cash to foreign markets then I dont see why they cant base the longevity of said shows on those sales. Fuck the American market.
ReplyDeleteIt came here in Egypt after the U.S, I love it!
ReplyDeleteWhen they start posting "It's a Hit internationally" that's when you know a show is in trouble.
ReplyDeleteGrey's maybe weaker in the UK then Desperate's but i can tell you in Australia it's the opposite Desperate's bombs every week and Greys soars.
ReplyDeleteHaven't heard which network is going to pick Pan Am up in Australia if it hasn't been fast tracked here i'm guessing it's Channel 7 which means it won't start until feb next year.
ReplyDeleteI didn't mean it like that sorry :) what I meant was the Grey's is sold to only about 75 territories with Desperate about 215
ReplyDeleteI watch it in Sweden every sunday. I hope the show doesn't get cancelled because I love it
ReplyDeleteSix seasons of Pan Am? To my mind it's highly unlikely. I watched the first few episodes and even though relatively enjoyable, they didnt get me immersed in the storylines. The show definitely pleases the eye but I think it lacks substance and the storytelling isn't that great. I particularly don't like the spy plotline. Pan Am had the potential for greatness butit's been wasted.

Six seasons and a movie was a reference to Community, they were talking about The Cape on NBC from last year.
ReplyDeleteIn all honesty if it gets a back 9 I'd be surprised
It's already airing in Portugal =D
