Well, well… what do we have here? Thanks to a tip from reader Nick, we have a sneak peek at the Game of Thrones season one DVD/Blu-Ray box set artwork. The box art from France had given us an idea of what the US box art might look like, but this more detailed look at the set is even better. We had previously reported that the DVD/Blu-Rays look to be releasing on March 20th in the US, March 19th in the UK and March 7th in France (and now Sweden). You can pre-order season one via Amazon or the HBO Shop.

  1. Not sure what to make of it just yet..... It is simplistic in design which can be a very good thing. Classic even. I guess seeing the features will make all the difference to me..... A good bonus feature set could make even an ugly DVD box look great to me! XD

The rear cover may be brilliant too, although HBO has a habit of making rather mundane boxes in my opinion. Over time I learn to appreciate them more and with age they continue to grwo on me....

  2. 7 of the episodes have commentary :D! I'm ridiculously excited. I'm also going to FOR SURE get this on blu ray (speaking of, I will get back to you soon, I promise/thanks for the info).

  3. It annoys me how long it takes for HBO shows to come out on DVD but at least the release date is before S2 (unlike Boardwalk Empire) The artwork looks fine to me I'm just hoping the DVD set has all the same features as the Blu Ray been noticing lately especially with movies that DVDs are missing the good bonus features

  4. I think that HBO often fails at marketing things as well as it could. While GoT has generally been a marketing success with numerous offerings, they often do information dumps (like the day we got the casting news for Melisandre AND Stannis AND Davos AND Maester Cressen). The failure to release Boardwalk Empire Season 1 BEFORE Season 2 undoubtedly has something to do with the numbers not growing much. As for the GoT release in March, HBO does seem to be following the networks in their strategy of releasing things a month before the next season. Unfortunately, that works a lot better for shows with 22 episodes that have only been off the air for 3 months.

As for bluray features, there appear to be some blu ray exclusives if you zoom in on the image (it contains a full list of features), but nothing particularly exciting. The making of featurettes and the commentaries are all on the DVDs too. In this case, the Blu Rays WILL undoubtedly be superior due to the epic nature and quality of the HD images.

  5. Yeah if this is the complete list I'm a little disappointed....It appears all of the DVD features were released during the season. Maybe they are extended versions... longer?

The Blu-Ray stuff all looks to be new to me though. Depending  what those "Hidden Daron Eggs" are it could be good or maybe even great. EXCLUSIVE BLU_RAY FEATURES:
    - Complete Guide to Westeros
    - Anatomy of an Episode
    - In Episode Guide
    - Hidden Dragon EggsAlso Includes:- Making of Game of Thrones- Creating the Show Open- From the Books to the Screen- Character Profiles- The Night's Watch- Crating the Dothraki Language- Audio Commentaries

  7.  I'll probably be picking up the blu-ray version anyway but I was hoping for some more significant bonus features with it. It's not exactly cheap.

  8. I'm so getting this. I, unfortunately, was not able to see it live on HBO, so I've been looking forward to it.

  9. I was hoping for a release in time for Christmas (HBO missed a trick there).

  10. I know right?
I have a hard time rationalizing more than $20 or $25 for a 10-13 episode season on disc, but..... Game of Thrones is the exception to that principle I guess.
