Game of Thrones - HBO to Order 2 More Seasons and Film Them Back to Back

"We are now hearing from multiple sources that HBO plans to order both seasons three and four and film them back-to-back (à la Lord of the Rings). It has already been confirmed that A Storm of Swords would be covered in more than one season. From what we have heard, much of the film crew in Northern Ireland has been told of this plan and has been advised to expect nine months of filming next year."

I don't think there will be any official word until Season Two premieres or at least much nearer the premiere, but this is good news! Not only that HBO has enough faith in the series to order 2 seasons at a time, but also that ASoIaF Book Three: A Storm of Swords will get the time it needs to properly show respect to the voluminous book! On top of that the younger actors are going to begin aging quickly and it will become harder and harder to picture them as 10 or 12 or 13 etc...

I personally have enough faith in D&D that I can not be too concerned over whether or not the story or quality will be affected. I think it may actually be enhanced since the cast and crew will be in the swing of things and therefore more efficient.

More to come if any official word or news is released!

  1. I won't dream of a shorter hiatus between seasons, but it would be amazing if it worked out that way!

I'm downright giddy in anticipation of 20 episodes for ASoS being filmed in one shot!!

  3. Gotta love HBO these days. They give their show runners all the creative freedom they need and don't really care about the ratings.

  4. It is amazing news as I am a big ASoS fan! Never hear about ASoS not been one season, so my fear have been lad to rest regarding ASoS. As this is great news for Norther Ireland as the film bring in so much money to the local economy.

  6. I watched a movie set in Connemara last week, The Guard.  Pretty good movie, but I like most anything Brendan Gleeson and Don Cheadle do!

I was thinking that was where GoT was filmed too if I recall... or part of it. I'm sure it is a huge boon for the local economy!  I wonder if running 9 months straight is better than 4 or 5 months over two years though..... Well regardless, a guarantee of 2 more years is great!

  7. The Guard is brilliant, one the best movie I seen this year. I think it mostly film in Galway in the west of Ireland whereas GoT is filming in Belfast and County Antrim, Armagh and Derry which are all in Northern Ireland.

  11. This is low-risk and makes sense both logistically and financially.  Smart move, HBO.

  14. Makes sence. There is no way aSoS could be condenced into one season.

I have a feeling a simila thing will happen with aFfC and aDwD. They'll probably combine those two together and follow the chronological timeline of the whole story, and that will make them have to split those two books into 2 or even 3 more seasons.

  15. I guess I always thought books 4 and 5 would be combined too since chronologically they take place at the same time...

I had not considered filming the 2 seasons (or even possibly three like you said) at the same time. I guess if they do it for book three/ Season 4 and 5 and it works out well maybe they will film Seasons 5 and 6 at the same time too.

It definitely saves on production costs - setting up and tearing down elaborate sets only once instead of doing it all twice. Maybe that saved cash could go to more money and time spent on VFX for the more elaborate needs like growing dragons and direwolves. Not to mention all the beyond the wall things that go bump in the night... or bump into the Night's Watch! XD

  16. I think you're right about the budget.. or at least frantically hoping... I don't want no falling skies or terra nova s---.

  17. This almost makes up for them getting rid of Carnivale and Deadwood!

  18. Whoa! hey! Let's not go too far! XD XD

  19. WOW, that is putting a lot of faith in the show! Assuming they are going to film them back to back due to the child actors aging!  The characters are very important to the story and so they probably need them to still look young enough to be believable for the character ages they are trying to portray.
