Game of Thrones season 2 is still at least five months away so how could one possibly guess at the ratings numbers for a show that’s only been on the air for one season? Aside from the shows already confirmed successes, the series will have several things going for it this time around that almost no other show on television has. Sure the ratings are impressive and everyone involved with Game of Thrones, even on the periphery, is going to be as wealthy as a Lannister but let’s take a look at the factors that are driving these incredible numbers that I contend will only become more incredible in season 2.
1) It is Known, (it is Known)
2) Once You're Hooked, You're Hooked
3) HBO has an Easy Sell in 2012
4) Comics, Games and Figurines
5) Quality Content is King

I'm expecting big things and larger numbers! Cannot wait!
ReplyDeleteAs a special bonus I thought I'd share some very fun Game of Thrones Lagos I saw online. Not official merchandise but custom created by the talented Dufresne07. http://www.flickr.com/photos/dufresne07/sets/"
ReplyDeleteGood cable dramas have a tendency to top their ratings every season. People find out about those shows between seasons, catch up and watch the DVDs. Just look at Breaking Bad. Even Dexter grows even though it's not as good a show as it used to be.
ReplyDeleteYep. That falls under the It is Known, (It is Known) category. XD
ReplyDeleteAlthough many genre shows tend to reach a limit in year 2 or 3 and then go down... I think Game of Thrones will avoid that pattern regardless.
i dont see the ratings increasing in season 2 i see it pulling a boardwalk empire and going down a little bit or around the same as season 1
ReplyDeleteI think a lot of it will depend on the names they get for next season. They'll take a huge hit from losing the Sean Bean & Jason Momoa fans.
ReplyDeleteSeason 1 ratings grew as the show went on so I would expect ratings to be pretty good. People who liked and watched the first season will return.
ReplyDeleteThis is the best show on TV and I couldn´t agree more. I think a lot of people have watched season one after it aired and will follow season 2. I think a lot of people (like me) have had time to read the books in between seasons and are even more excited for season 2, than they ever were for season 1.
ReplyDeleteI agree that the casting is importend. It doesn´t have to be big names though, but just people who fit the part. In a series like GoT in could ruin a lot with the wrong casting. BUT I have to say that I don´t worry about it. In season one they did a fantastic job and I´m sure season 2 will be the same.
Can´t wait!!!!!!!!!!
I think it could lose a few because of the deaths of Eddard Stark and Robert Brartheon (Sean Bean and Mark Addy) ... maybe even a few Jason Momoa fans, but most of those fans already would have left last year upon the characters deaths and the ratings continued to rise even after those deaths.
ReplyDeleteThere could be a few that watched all of last year, but decided it was too real or gritty for them; or maybe they watched despite holding a grudge for the deaths and will not tune in for another season. However, anyone that has read the books expected the deaths, and most of the people that tuned in fell in love with the series despite (or because of) the deaths.I think any loss to to deaths will be made up by new viewers that have now read the books, or that watched Season One after the finale aired. I really do not expect a drop off at all I guess.
I'm excited to see how it goes and just to watch Season Two!
I'm actually not completely sure, but as far as I can remember they didn't cast any "big" names for season 2, right? I don't care at all as long as the people they cast keep the level of quality the show created in season 1 and I'm confident they will.
ReplyDeleteCorrect. No big names like a Sean Bean, but they did get a lot of similar experienced actors. Most have stage experience and rave reviews for past projects.
ReplyDeleteTypical HBO type actors I guess. So they have more industry respect than masses of fanboys or fangirls.
Like they say... Most shows hire stars, HBO makes stars.
Agree...
ReplyDeleteI will wait until the numbers for the Home Video come in, but I'm guessing for a series high in the premiere.
ReplyDeleteSweet, cheers for the update, that's good news!
ReplyDeleteThe amount of people I see reading the books every day on the train I would not be surprised if everyone is watching come S2 ;)
ReplyDeleteSo excited just to watch Season Two! Cannot wait!
ReplyDeleteA more accurate list, aside from network spin:
ReplyDelete1.) Current fans of the series proved loyal and grew the viewership throughout season 1
2.) Positive word of mouth
3.) Positive (and abundant) press coverage
4.) A down economy is a boon to escapist television
5.) HBO is extremely proficient at promoting their programs
I expect the rating to fall. Many people are excited about the new season way too much. And because it`s based on a book, people will buy A Clash of Kings to know what happends next and then, they will buy the next etc. So I think ratings will drop next season, but I don`t know how much.
ReplyDeleteI know I will :-D
ReplyDeleteI agree with you.
ReplyDeleteI've said it and I'll say it again, I love these books and I soooo happy they are staying faithful to the source material, the world is already so rich and epic, that I just want good actors to breathe life into the characters, not overshadow them
ReplyDeleteEXACTLY!
ReplyDeleteThat is why I often prefer journeymen character actors to "big names" or stars.... So many stars personality or image overshadows every role they portray.
I adore when an actor gets lost within the role and becomes the role itself. That way you can compare 3 or 4 of the actors roles to one another and they are all completely different and unique.
