FX Developing Four New Drama Projects

29 Nov 2011

As its tagline suggests, FX is looking to remain outside the box for its next wave of projects from writer Dennis Lehane, singer Anthony Kiedis and Justified producer Graham Yost.

Amomg the projects in the News Corp.-owned cable network's development pipeline is Bunker. The project, which hails from Chernin Entertainment and Fox Television Studios, revolves around a female cop psychologist from Boston.

Novelist Lehane (Shutter Island, Mystic River, Gone Baby Gone) will write and executive produce the project alongside Chernin Entertainment’s Peter Chernin and Katherine Pope.

The cabler is also developing Laredo, an hourlong crime drama set at the Texas/Mexico border with Flags of Our Fathers scribe William Broyles attached to executive produce. Newcomer Eric Lodal will write and EP the FX Productions and FTVS project.

In addition, FX is in development on Scar Tissue, a drama loosely based on the autobiography of the same name by Red Hot Chili Peppers’ frontman Anthony Kiedis. The drama, previously in development at HBO, comes from Catapult 360 and FX Productions.

Entourage co-executive producers Mike Benson and Marc Abrams will executive produce through their Catapult 360 shingle, alongside Kiedis, Laura Rister from Untitled Entertainment and Jason Weinberg (Enlightened). John Sayles, who penned a previous version of the drama before FX picked it up, will not continue with the project.

Finally, the network is developing The Americans, a Russian espionage drama set in the 1980s during the collapse of the Soviet Union. The project, from DreamWorks Television, centers on Russian sleepers operating in the United States.

Justified showrunner Graham Yost is on board to produce, and should Americans be picked up to series, it would mark his third drama currently on the air (others include Justified and TNT’s Falling Skies). DreamWorks TV’s Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey are on board to executive produce alongside Joe Weisberg (Falling Skies, Damages), who will pen the project.

  1. The Americans definitely sounds the most interesting to me , this could turn out to be quite good.

Laredo sounds a little bit like Outlaw Country. And I think one of the reasons Outlaw Country was dropped, was because it sounded like there could have been too many similarities to Justified.

Bunker & Scar Tissue don't sound very appealing to me.

  2. I like the third one, but not sure if I'd watch.

  3. None of the four sound that interesting to me at the moment.  Of course there could be more to them than is hinted so not ruling out any of them except Scar Tissue, defintiely have no interest in that.

  4. This is one of those situations where each one of these could turn out to be great or trash in my eyes.

There's a lot of potential in a border drama and the spy series.... and then the other two projects have strong creative teams who seem to write movie hits, but can that translate to the small screen?

Anthony Keides life is actually pretty damn interesting and could make for a great drama! From the early substance abuse and drug dealer dad, to being a pioneer in the surf punk/funk music genre. IF it's done right it could make for a great series.... or just bomb. XD

  5. I actually think there's a reason why that Kiedis project has been in development at HBO for 3 or 4 years and never been picked up to pilot. But maybe this new creative team can achieve something with the material.

  6. Ah it has? Yeah.

Maybe it's like I suspected then - interesting enough subject matter but the series  pilot has never quite come together just right. Then again, maybe the subject matter is bad and big names keep trying to keep it alive! XD

  7. Wow, Dennis Lehane writing for FX? :D
Also, The Americans sounds like a great show that I would love to watch. Overall, all of these sound like good ideas, you know, unlike everything at NBC.

  8. These shows could turn out to be really something,we'll just have to wait and see what happens with them....The Americans sounds good,i think if they start in the 1960's it would be an excellent show. That was an amazing, and extremely frighting time for the people living ,and growing up during that time.Tv was still in its infancy, the only way to know what was going on was by the news on tv,and the newspapers, and that's what made it so frighting at times, relying on the printed word. What a different world that was...........

  9. I think "The Americans" should be renamed "Project Christmas" and Bad Robot should take it off their hands :p

  10. I'm thinking perhaps its a darker version of "Entourage", so they needed to wait until that show was over so as not to overload you with buddy dramas.

  11. Probably the most interested in 'The Americans', but I'd likely check out any of the shows, it is FX after all.
