Fringe - Season 5 - Renewal still too early to call

Thanks to Windsor from http://fringe.com.pl/

Peter Roth, president of Warner Brothers Television, has said its still too early to tell whether or not Fox will renew its quirky cult drama Fringe.

The series, starring John Noble, Anna Trov and Joshua Jackson, is produced by Warner Bros TV for Fox. It is currently airing its fourth season in the notorious grave-yard slot on Friday evenings where it was moved to during its third series amidst much protest from fans who felt it would kill off the series. Despite a notable drop in ratings Fox still renewed Fringe for a fourth season but crucially ratings since its return have been down and already some are beginning to wonder if this will be the drama's final season.

Well Peter Roth has spoken about the future of Fringe declaring 'It's too soon to tell' if this will indeed be the final season. He told TV Line 'This is a show on Friday nights that audiences love to DVR, and as such we shoot up anywhere from 40 to 63 percent, when you calculate the Live+7. Hopefully that will be good enough for us to continue.'

It was a combination of Fringe's DVR figures and other underperforming shows that resulted in Fringe returning for a fourth season - will it be able to survive again on such figures alone? Only time will tell....

  1. I hate to think that its future is unknown but like the article said it was renewed with low numbers last season. I don't know...

  2. I watch live.. I DVR too.. i want my Fringe!  so help me god i'll throw the mother of tantrums if it's canceled.

  3. All I saw when I glance down was word Fringe and renewel.  I was surprised and overjoyed until I read the full thing. I am hoping to get a season 5 but I have to agree that it too early to tell, good to hear for Warner Bros

  4. I am one of the few that thinks there will be a Season Five and it will be announced as the final season before it premieres.

It's not that the ratings are stellar , but that FOX (and the network brass) actually seems to be behind the show still.

I have much higher hopes than most people I guess and I'n a cynic by nature.

  5. Ha!

I did the same thing... XD

I guess the article still gives me some hope... or more hope actually since it seems like if the DVR numbers hold up it could be renewed.

Most people seemed to think it was doomed because of the low ratings this year. If he is even considering renewal that's a positive thing in my book. Unless he's just talking out of the side of his mouth to play well with fans of FRINGE.

  6. I think we should take his comments with a big grain of salt. IMO Fox only renewed Fringe for season 4 because WB offered a much reduced rate so they could get to 88 episodes and reap the financial rewards of syndication. Since they will have reached that at the end of the season, I can't see any financial motivation to renew it. Remember, TV is a business. It sucks but it is true.

  7. To all you nay sayers i told you it was to early in the season to predict the cancellation of Fringe. Then some of you actually were begging (okay that might be to strong a word) to announce its cancellation.See I told you, there"s hope, and and have some  faith, take that giant leap for you never know! :)

  8. Yeah I think there will be a season 5 too, I'd be happy if it got a 12 or 13 episode mid season premiere, although I'd love it to get a full season 5.
Come on Fringies in America you need to get the live ratings up

    ReplyDelete
  9. I think he wants a season 5 and is just giving us the heads up to get the ratings up

  10. I will continue to be optimistic

  11. I've always been optimistic about this subject in past seasons, but for some reason this season my optimism is failing me. I'm trying to keep the good thoughts going, but this season's numbers along with the upside down plot has me biting my nails. But that said I still love Fringe, if I didn't you wouldn't see these types of comments coming from me. I will try to be more optimistic going forward.

  12. They just can't cancel Fringe. Many people would get hurt or die.

  13. I like to think it not doom and this article has up my hope a little. I do think Fringe it will get an another season but I think it be a half-season (13 episode) final run to wrap up everything.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Hey Rick,i know how much you love this show, and yeah even i have been depressed at times seeing those numbers, but i never up,will never give up till that last frame disappears from my screen So glad you are taking that leap (albeit GIANT) leap of faith.!!

  15. Somebody needs to hack into the Nielsen system and send messages to watch Fringe or else.hehe

  16.   I'm a huge Fringe fan, but I don't think it should get another season. This Peterless universe is the absolute dumbest thing in the history of the show. If they had done it the right way, with Walternate and the other other-side Fringies working out their differences with our side, it might have worked. But they did it with some half-assed combo of season one and season three. It sucked, and the ratings reflect this.
Now, there is hope. One of the best, nay, THE best villains is going to make a comeback: David Robert Jones. The promo for the next episode (with Orla Brady, no less) looks far better than the previous seven episodes. There are fifteen more episodes this season. Get Peter back to where he came from, show Walternate and the other-siders, make Jones and the translucent shapeshifters the main villains, and explain more about the Observers. Tie all of this into a truly powerful ending, and it will go down as one of the best shows of all time.
      Rant over.

  17. Dear Peter Roth,
I guess I won't have the Fringe renewal for Christmas, so at least think about my birthday in January please. Thanks!
Actually I can't help but being optimistic about it.
    Let's hope so!

  18. This goes along with what I have been saying all along. Mid-Feb is when they will know what they are gonna do. If anything, worst case scenario I see WB doing 13 more episodes as a final season - a la Chuck. And since first-run shows are not where WB makes back $$$$ - all platforms of syndication do - it benefits them to get to the magic 100. There are a lot of things still going for this show and that includes but not limited to: This show has more buzz/critic talk/social media measured metrics around it than ANYTHING on in the 9pm slot for FOX, - PR that money can't buy,  the DVD sales, The iTunes sales, the Live +3 numbers (not to mention the Live +7 but networks LOOK more at the Live + 3 more.) More platforms for audience engagtment like the comics and etc. It's not just ONE thing they look at to make a decision to keep a show. I'm curious to see how the network execs will answer the question about renewal for the show come TCA Winter Press Tour time. (Mid Jan.)

  19. I think that final half-fifth season would be great.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Well I'm a huge Fringe fan too and I don't get your point of view. In my opinion this Peterless universe is a shocking but awesome turn of events in the show history. Actually I love this season, and I think the show got more and more better during all the seasons.

  21. No matter what I know Fringe is going to be one of those shows that heaps of people will buy (or hire) to watch and re-watch - especially for the hiatus etc.

How amazing would a Fringe Movie be???

  22. To the people saying that Fringe shouldn't get another season because of the storyline this season I just have to say:  How many times has this show been accused of "jumping the shark" and how many times has that assumption been proven wrong?  That's what I love about Fringe.  They're not afraid to take risks.  In my opinion that's what makes this show so great.  They never play it safe.  I never know what's going to happen; what crazy thing they're going to do next.  I've given up trying to figure it out.  Now I'm just enjoying the ride and trusting that the writers know what they're doing.  There are multiple storylines that they've done that at the time had me very worried but in the end they all worked out.  They all strengthened the show in some way.  Another thing to consider is that the show is only 7 episodes into the season.  Fringe almost always has it's best episodes in the second half of the season and as we saw episode 8 looks nothing short of epic.  Before you go judging the season, wait until the season is actually over, or at least half way through before you do.  I for one am excited for this alternate timeline because we get David Robert Jones back.

I'm going to remain optimistic that Fringe will get another season or at least another half season.  As far as I know the people of FOX are still fans of the show (which is why it got a 3rd and 4th season).  And it is getting major ratings boosts with DVR numbers (even though I realize that doesn't help with advertisements) so I'm going to stay optimistic).  I can't do anything to help with the Nielsen ratings because I don't have a box but I do watch it live and DVR it to watch it again.  I still would like to meet someone or know someone who knows someone who knows someone, etc who actually owns a Nielsen box.  All I ask though is that if they aren't going to renew it let the show runners know early enough so that they can give us a satisfying and proper series finale.  PLEASE don't end the show with any kind of cliffhanger.

  24. Lichen I'm totally with you :-)
This show is so good, because you never know what kind of crazy event is going to happen.
So unusual in TV shows today.

  25. "quirky cult drama".... Not quite what I'd call Fringe but okay.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Made that comment having only read the opening line. Having read the whole thing now it's evident that whoever read it has probably never watched a single episode of the show.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Please, please, please let them have a fifth season to give it a satisfactory ending.

    ReplyDelete
  28. The absolute peak was everything between season two's Jacksonville and season 3's Entrada. There have been good episodes since (Subject 13, The Firefly, The Day We Died, etc), but we have already passed the creative apex.
As I said, the Peterless plotline COULD have been handled well. The two Fringe teams, using the bridge room, working out their differences; the two Olivias, the two Walters. It could've been great. But the absence of Walternate, the return of standalone procedural mysteries, and the poorly done season one vibe, killed it. The base of Fringe fans are jumping ship.

  31. I don't think your one of the few,i also believe in a 5th season i've been saying that in all my threads concerning Fringe. :D

  35. although ive only recently become obessed with this show It NEEDS TO BE RENEWED!!!!! i actually look foward to it SOOSOSO MUCH! so pleasee renew it!!

  36. I agree that this Peter-less storyline is tiring. Every season of a show usually has a theme and keeps it within that season while the characters continue their serialized arcs. But this 2 world thing has gone on looooong enough. This should have been resolved in last year's final. Now, this Peter-less thing has to go away. I got invested in the characters and mysteries that were built up..(ex; the mystery man who is supposed to kill Olivia, the love triangle between Peter and both Olivias, Peter's relationship with his real father, and the whole baby issue)....Are we supposed to just forget about all of this and feel cheated???

  37. *Keeps Fingers Crossed*
    &
Well I do hope for a 5th season, no doubt but it seems that other factors might/can ruin it.....

    ReplyDelete
  38. I hate to even say this because I myself LOVE it but, if Chuck can get a 5th and Final Season, why can't Fringe? I know they are completely different shows, and NBC is surely NOT FOX but still. Let a "cult hit" that's critically praised and obviously LOVED by the fans go out strong with an announced 5th and Final Season. That would keep the fans at least pleased.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I want a 5th season, as I love the show, but I am not too optomistic that it is going to happen.  At the moment I am enjoying the 4th season as if it will be the last.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I think if they do a season 5 they need to do a few introductory episodes at the start to get new viewers as one of the problems with it currently is that you really need to have watched all of it to get into it.

    ReplyDelete
  41. FRINGE is a special show. This is a show I call it with a "soul". Such kind of show happens not every day. A show has a soul when it has an amazing storyline and wonderful brilliant cast and totally invested fanbase all over the world. I´m a sci-fi fan in general and I can say I was only 3 times invested in a show on this level: by Stargate SG-1, Stargate Atlantis and now FRINGE - so as I said such kind of show happens not EVERY DAY when you really love and care about the characters, when you want to talk about the show about what is happening in it, when the stories they introduce seem so real, beautifully acted by talented actors - it´s crazy but every time I see A.Torv, J. Noble and J.Jackson in an interview or at Comic Con etc. I can´t help but see Olivia, Walter and Peter in them and at this point a show starts to be a CULT! So I hope that Fox and WB bosses know what thay have with Fringe.! This show simply deserves 5th season because it is SPECIAL, it is not an average scifi show about awful cruel aliens, walking deads or vampires, it is about alternate universes, different timelines, time travel, time paradox combined with beautiful human emotions like love, loss, forgiveness, hate...it´s an intelligent show which makes you every time think about things what´s really important in your life, how far would you go for someone you love..... That´s why I don´t want Fringe to end and I don´t want the characters to go! I´m from Germany so I can´t watch Fringe live and I ´m convinced in Amerika milions of people watch Fringe live with commercials but they simply don´t own a Nielsen box. That being said CULT Shows such as Fringe  don´t simply end  and I have a feeling that we will still see the adventures of Walter, Peter and Olivia for a long time!:)

  42. Another big question is whether Fox has anything in the pipeline that they'd be willing to put on Friday.  New shows usually get a better timeslot.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I really, really hope we do get a Season 5. It would be great to wrap up all the story lines & explain mythology, ect. If it were to get cancelled at the end of S4 it would feel very rushed and sad. The ratings are a real worry. The 'new' timeline is not sitting well with a lot of fans, but the show has delivered so far, even when we had the horrid Bolivia/Peter/Olivia triangle. Only fans in the U.S. can do anything about it tho. Why not ask their friends and relatives who don't watch the show either dvr it or watch it live in the background, or something. Just to boost the ratings so that we can get S5...

    ReplyDelete
  44. I think some kind of organized campaign should be done to get Season 5... There are number of F/Book pages I've seen and Twiitter accounts dedicated to Fringe, maybe fans in U.S can write letters to Fox/Warner Brothers or something similar. It's sad that great shows get cancelled when lots of trashy shows seem to get umpteen seasons...

  45. If they're not going to renew it I will really be freaking out!! They have canceled too many of my favorite shows already

    ReplyDelete
  46. Well said.  It's extremely rare when a show like Fringe comes along. Let's hope for another full season. And after that who knows?

    ReplyDelete
  47. "This is a show on Friday nights that audiences love to DVR, and as such we shoot up anywhere from 40 to 63 percent, when you canlculate the Live +7"

Too bad the Live+7 numbers don't really matter much when it comes to the question wether or not Fringe will be cancelled...

    ReplyDelete
  48. Well that's better news than just telling us that is over right now. I just hope they give the writers enought time to come to an alright conclusion if this would be the last season. (Here's hoping for a season 5)

    ReplyDelete
  49. My exact sentiments. I REALLY hope Fox doesn't leave us hanging! I think they know better than that...They aren't NBC so maybe they will realize what damage was done by the way NBC did "The Event" and "Persons Unknown". Also by the way that ABC treated "FlashForward" but we shall see...

    ReplyDelete
  50. I'm not a betting person, but I'm betting on "don't count on it". Most shows end under the assumption that there WILL be a next season, and plan accordingly. Like with Terminator, Heroes, Flashforward and The Event. Now, the Fringe writers have said that they have an "in case of emergency" ending in the event of cancellation, but really, are they going to know whether or not they get cancelled any sooner than we will know?

    ReplyDelete
  51. I couldn't of said it any better! :) and :(

    ReplyDelete
  52. Let's just wait and see. I can't see how they are going to do a proper ending in Season 4. There's just TOO much that's yet to be uncovered. If the show get's cancelled/renewed, we better get another 13 episodes season 5. They owe us that.

    ReplyDelete
  53. This whole not knowing thing is starting to cause me pain.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Finally, after all this time, I'm catching up with Fringe, still on season 1 ... its unbelievable how I missed out for so long! Its a show right up my alley!
I really hope they renew it!

  55. hope fringe gets another season 5 season would be a good season to end it

    ReplyDelete
  56. i hope they'll renew it but... at least improve the storyline.,,...

  57. i hope so ! i love fringe it's the best show ever !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  58. Fringe has to be renewed!! its awesome!

  59. So if we were to do one of those "Fans send crap to Network" deals, what would we send?  White tulips? Licorice sticks?

    ReplyDelete
  60. This is my favorite show on television right now. I would be sooooo pissed if it was canceled. It has so much potential and it can go so many directions. Love the show, again if it's canceled sh** will hit the fan.
